Moving To CINE LENSES! Reasons to Switch & Behind The Scenes | Sigma Cine Primes - Wex MasterClass

  • I was lucky enough to try out a set of Sigma Cine Primes for a month to discover the benefits of these incredible lenses compared to traditional photography lenses.
    As I move forward with my filmmaking journey I’m looking to expand into more narrative filmmaking, and being confident with manual focus is something that’s a really important skill to master. A lot of people are shocked when they hear I shoot manual focus, as they rely on the autofocus features of their cameras and let their autofocus systems do all the work. That’s absolutely fine as a solo operator - but lets just say that I get called to a shoot on a bigger commercial job that I’m used to - there’s not going to be any autofocus used there at all, so I want to be confident that I’ll have the experience to be able to take on those kinds of jobs in future. So I’d say that if you’re used to relying on autofocus for most of your projects then you’ll want to have a play with manual focus before you commit to cine lenses.
    Here’s my top 5 reasons why you might consider switching to cine lenses:
    1. Consistency & control across the range, from follow focus gears to filter threads, so you won’t need multiple ND filter sizes
    2. Improved image quality built on Sigma ART range for a high end look which I’m always striving for
    3. Great build quality and splash resistance, dust resistance
    4. The smooth focus and aperture controls mean that for my setup in particular, focusing is always consistent and works well with my DJI 3D Focus. The lens has hard stops at each end of the focus range so I know exactly where the start and finish of the range is, allowing me to calibrate my follow focus easily
    5. Mounting options - with the various mounting types I know that there will always be an adapter to fit my camera so despite being expensive, they’re pretty much future proof. Oh, and the lens markings glow in the dark. Awesome!
    Sigma Cine Primes are available in 10 full frame focal lengths all the way from 14mm to 135mm. You can find out more here: www.wexphotovi...

    This was an absolutely great watch. I've always dreaded manual focus, especially on stills lenses. But I do believe it's a great skill to pick up. Thanks for this Russell.

      Probably the secret benefit of choosing Lumix cameras, you’re forced to learn how to manual focus well. That and studying film means I was trained in manual only. It’s a great skill to learn and will mean you can be a more effective filmmaker or photographer in any situation.
      That being said, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about the autofocus on the new s5 cameras 😅

    Russell, I have been interested in the Panasonic s1 but I have been hearing things about corrupted files, have you been getting those

    • @RussellKentNicholls
      @RussellKentNicholls  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I had just one file problem in 2 years of this camera and that was when I pressed record twice in quick succession without the camera fully writing the file to the card, if that makes sense. I knew it was my fault. Aside from that, these cameras are as good as the day I bought them with zero problems. And they exceeded my expectations with a whole bundle of new features like 5.9K, for free… it’s incredible value for such a powerful camera.

    I only use push auto (autofocus once and then switching to manual focus) at the begging of my shoot because I find when I use autofocus it always misses focus in the middle of a shoot. I eventually want to learn how to focus without needing push auto.

    Have you ever used the 35mm sigma cine indoors ? Did the 35mm cover most work indoors or did you have to go wider at 20mm ? Also the sigma cine 28mm has more glass in it than the 20,24,and 35, ...did you notice a different type of image quality with the sigma cine 28mm ?

    What is the difference in image quality from still to cine?
    I have been looking to buy a lens.

    • @RussellKentNicholls
      @RussellKentNicholls  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the image depending on which brand you go for can be similar to stills lenses. Some cine have unique bokeh & colour rendering, but mostly the differences are physical (focus & aperture gears, sealing, heavy duty, consistent sizes & threads) which make them easier for repeatable, consistent shots.
