Hi Christi! I have listened to Tuomas'
interviews about this single. At the beginning Floor is singing as outsider or like observing from a distance the situation. At the end she joines the choir and there tha magic happens. So all this arrangement has a reason in how Tuomas has ment it to be sang for example. Tuomas said that message in this song is stil at the end hopeful. Sincerely yours Kaisa from Finland 🎉

This song has grown into me. The message is very cautionary and relevant these days. The open-mouthed statue-like faces are so eerie, hits hard when they relate to most people who just take in whatever is fed by media and other outlets, including people in government.
Thanks to Tuomas for the reminder, if not to wake us up.

You're probably thinking of the "rehabilitation" of Alex in Clockwork Orange, in the scene where his eyes are clamped open.
I think the "negative comments" are mostly from the fans who think a song is no good unless Floor is belting out high Fs. (In the two released singles, Tuomas elected to have her relatively low in the mix in the choral sections.) In a live performance, the children's choir would be on a backing track, as in "Ghost River", and Floor's vocals would probably be much more prominent.

Yes, noticed the same movie reference the other day. Eye drops were also used in Clockwork :) My favorite line in this song must be "Mind virus, fear of the well-known..." - cleverly put!

Artisticly Nightwish always was/is on a high level,it's, not for everybody, the intricate and poetic nature of A lot of the Nightwish songs makes it music where you have to invest some of your time .Their history is in many ways, a facinating one gave me for shure some "shock and awe". Nightwish is a bit a strange phenomenon, we always first get the studio version but ,a lot of the time ,they really shine with their live shows,so, maby some songs from studio versions didn't stand out but live,it can be a total different story. That's the magic they possess.🤘

  • @pdutchie4924

Tuomas said about this song: “Floor at first is acting to be the preacher of fear, then the kids saying how things really should be and in the last chorus they join and that is where the magic happens”.
I think the children’s choir gives a great twist and balance in the song.
Like stated before in Weak Fantasy:
Fear is a choice you embrace!
Universe: not to spoil anything, but you can stop worrying ❣️

Another great reaction. Sorry I missed the livestream. I have watched this video numerous times and every time I discover something new. Loved you reference to Clockwork Orange which had not occurred to me previously. The storytelling in the lyrics and the video is profound and it has taken me several listens and doing a deep dive into the lyrics to understand what Tuomas was going for. Originally I thought this was Tuomas's warning to us of humanities proclivity to freakout over the next disaster that people are pushing (so many references to apocalyptic predictionsin the lyrics) but recently I picked up on the fact that in the chorus the children are saying that their is hope for the feature, no need to let fear and misery control us. In the video there is one part where you see adult Mayans on their knee's reacting to their perceived end of the world as a solar eclipse is occurring, reacting to the end of world prediction in the Mayan calendar (which was supposed to happen in 2012). On la later view I noticed amongst the adults is a child leaning over a seedling that is recently planted, representing hope for the future. One of my favorite lines is "A new strain sent you back into your cave. Obey, stay away, cover up" (reference to Covid?). But my favorite is "A need to feel dread, gloom, awe. A lust for never-ending doom porn". Never ending doom porn has to be one of the best turn of phrases I have ever heard. It is such a poetic way to describe how people are fascinated with the bad and evil and give short shrift to the positive and uplifting. As they say in the news business, if it bleed it leads.

-There are a lot of Singers/Musicians who are important for the Music Industry (SALES) and there are Singers/Musicians, NOT A LOT, who are important for The Music History, as an ART ... That's where you find FLOOR & Nightwish !!! Shine on Christi and my friends ... 🤘

their first single, Perfume of the Timeless, is a true work of art, both musically and visually. Tuomas is a great composer, but can only play this with musicians who can play at the same level, and of course with Floor who can sing everything she wants.🤟🏻🤟🏻

A bit of a new way to go for Nightwish, with the children choir being this much present,, Floor is doing some fast phrasing here to, something like she does in the song Shoemaker, kind off i think.
This song is about leaders, who spread fear in people, religious, political all kind of leaders, they tell that if you dont do it like this, the end is near, and it all bad, but its a lie, the due date have passed many times in history already for these doomsday predictions, so life your life, dont let yourself fill up with fear..
Notice that Floor joins the kids choir at end and connect that to her charecter she is in video, she realize something during video, Toumas said so in a interview i watched..
I didnt read the book 1984 written by George Orwell, but the song got reference to that book i belive. At first listen i needed another listen, at 3th listen the song got me, and i started like the children choir, i actually think its a pretty good song, and something not heard like this from NW before, now i listened to the song many times!
This is not a Empuu shine song, there is heavy guitar rhytm in the middle section and end, but not the big Empuu solo, but i also think this song dosent need it, because the Children choir takes spotlight instead,..
The title the day off.. is missing telling what its the day off, so i think this is where you can put in the optimistic view of the song, as a listener, if you like to, and hear the song that way, the listener decide what its the day off.
The original idea was this one to be 1st single, because it was a diffrent sound from NW people told Tuomas, this have to be a single, but then Tuomas decided it should be Perfume of the timelees, and this 2nd.
I belive a 3th single will be out before album release, being last track on upcoming album, called Lanternlight.

    THE DAYOF
    LYRICS:
    Take shelter, skies are humming
    Harmageddon, 2nd coming
War of the worlds, the end of history
    Take shelter, floods are rising
    The Wrath of thunderous drumming
    End of days
For mankind, and for your kin
Fill those empty moments, fear more
In this grave new world of `84
    Fast death, last breath,
    A.I. to kill us all
    Horse waste covering London
    Martians among us, Y2K
Hoard, all aboard, the end is near
We are the ill-starred kids of your junkyard
    The innocent islands unscarred
    The moment of our nadir
So many times passed the due date
    Too late, gather up
    It`s the day of
    Purgatory, same old story
    Cower before a caliphate glory
The Big Read of today will gallow you,
    Keep you small
Here’s a million ropes for the hangman
    Nightmare cavalcade for the sandman
Mind virus, fear of the well-known
    Keep us safe
We are too many for our Mother
Crops will burn so why bother
A new strain sent you back into your cave
    Obey, stay away, cover up
    Fear the words, feeding humanity
    Hide the unshot guns
    And the crippled dancing
    It`s a long road to a dreamworld
All the pain and suffering to feel for
It`s there, but yours is an empty sermon
    Made up the sun rising
    Made sense of equus flying
Time for another fear made real
A need to feel dread, gloom, awe
A lust for never-ending doom porn
A man-shaped evil walks among us
    Obey, stay away, cover up
Fear the words, the feed, feed the human beast
    Hide the unshot guns
    The end is fear

It’s about the fear mongers of all times trying to manipulate the people to do what they want. In the thirty years I teach there are always pupils asking me if there’s going to be a war or if the world will end. I’ve always assured them it will get by, but it hit me every time to see their fear. So this song is wonderful to enlighten them they are being manipulated.

After personally living through the evolution of Rush and hearing all the negative comments from supposed fans with each of their new albums, I just ignore those who are critical of new NW music. There's ALWAYS a critic.

There will always be people who are stuck in time and can’t evolve at the same rate and level as Tuomas, as a reaction on the negative reactions. Nobody can expect of Tuomas that he keeps repeating himself for almost 30 years and keeps writing the same songs.

Tuomas is not in any Social media or Internet and he does not read the comments and he sure as h*** does not change anything in the songs or the mix because Joe Nobody has a negative comment. NW themselves noticed that the first version had a "bug" an error, which they corrected and returned the intended correct version into the circulation. The mix is intended to be not in the front, but as one of the instrument. This is Tuomas'es artistic choice and if someone does not like it, well listen to 99,99 % other songs were song is in the front and the loudest.. Also they should understand that Nightwish is not Floor Jansens background band, but Floor is one of the instruments Tuomas uses in his composing of the songs, mostly in front in the mix, but not necessary. Tuomas uses all sound producing sources to serve the song and story, even the lead vocals! And I love Floors voice and her as a singer, but there are plenty of songs to enjoy her vocals in the front, you have 2 songs now not making even 1% of the NW songs that the lead voice is not in front and people start wining.. People will build their understanding how songs should be structured and once the song does not follow their opinion, they start wining about it.. Well NW is also said to be Progressive Metal band and the word Progressive means, that a lot of new and unheard things are TRIED OUT in the music and songs, so??!!

"Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hate, leads to suffering" . Yoda's been saying it for 800 years.
Even in 1999 (and way before that) writers are artists were warning us about the perils of doom mongering.
