      The Rover has aged like a fine wine and only gets better with age. The Jag hasn’t aged quite as well (especially the interior) but it’s still a lovely looking car.

      The 75 interior was better styled than the S Type, the latter only got to the mark with the 2004 refresh with a new interior.
      I’m not bused, I worked on the materials purchase for the Jag interiors at the time.
      75 was very underrated

      I think the S-type nose could be alright if they flipped the grille horizontally. Have to agree it looked more modern than the 75. Clear headlights and nice rims could do 75 good for the appearance. :)

    In 2019 both cars can be had for under £1000 & I've opted for a Rover 75 Connoisseur. The S-Type is attractively styled on the exterior but a little plain inside, I felt more luxurious & comfort was afford on the 75 interior. Both are nice cars & I see significant numbers still on the road. They were both used as official government cars during the New Labour era but Jaguar X-Type & Vauxhall Omegas were more common.

    Im 19 and have always had a soft spot for the 75, don't let anyone say its just an old people's car 😂. My household has both Daimlers, a jag and rovers and I do think rover and jaguar are not in the same category. But then again, my rover 800 has been all over Europe with us and has incredibly high milage compared to the the jag of a similar age, and I am still using it daily.

      Yeah I was in my late teens or early twenties when I started loving the 75's styling. I think it's more for people with taste than with age, and it makes me wonder what critics would rather drive instead in the same price bracket. The only other 21st century car I've seen that looks as good or better is the Crystler 300C. And the only cars that rival in style are in fact Jaguars (and arguably Mazeratis). Probably the critics prefer a fecking Toyota Avensis!

  • @pelell1898
    @pelell1898 9 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I love Jags too but I also love the Rover. Time has actually not been as kind to the Jaguar as it has to the Rover with many criticisms of its styling and engineering. As for not comparing the two? Don't believe a word of it. The Jag has a lot of Ford based parts in it too including the motor as stated. The Rover is a classy car and looks it which was the intention in its design. It still looks good today some 15 years after its release in my opinion. I own both marques so don't prefer one over the other. Most Rovers now have actually worn the years at least as well as the equivalent Jaguars (if not better) and this may be because they attracted an older clientele which looked after them better, or shock horror, they were actually reasonably well built! As for comparisons of the Jag with BMW and Mercedes, well they didn't manage to be better when new so are not likely to be now. The Rover also has many BMW components in it too, but I wouldn't probably compare it to one of those, but it does have a much nicer interior than any Benz of the period. It's horses for courses and what you like, but the Rover is better than many of its detractors would have you believe.

    I think its a bit unfair I love my Rover diesel It is a brilliant and is quit quick and pulls away rather well too, But because the Rover has a Stigma and the Jaguar, well its the name isn't it Jaguar and the way people pronounce it . Think people underestimate the Rover . The Rover 75's are being scraped and soon there will only be a few and they will become rare . I have own a Daimler and a XJ6 and I think my Daimler was better than my Jag I also owned a v12 xjs but to me my xjs was nothing at all like my xj6 . Anyway I still own my Rover SD1 and my Rover 75's

    In all honesty the Jaguar S -type was aimed at the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E-class and was bigger and more expensive than the Rover 75. The biggest petrol engined 75 at that time was the 2.5 V6 and the smallest engine in the S-type was a 3.0 V6. The X -type Jaguar was more a direct rival the the 75, where it would be a much more even comparison.

    • @GRAHAM5020
      @GRAHAM5020 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But there was a 2.5V6 for the S-type at least in Europe and it was despite being more powerful not any faster than the 75s 2.5V6. Funny that part of power to weight!

  • @tonycypriot9401

    I do think this was a slight unfair comparison for the price and size of the Rover 75 is more in line with a Jaguar X type than the S. Given the Rover 75 came as an estate car of which no doubt comparisons would've been made with the Jaguar X type estate, this was I have to say a flawed argument.
    Perhaps comparing the S type with the Rover 75 limousine would've been a fairer comparison, nonetheless I'd of opted for the Rover providing it was the diesel BMW engine.

    Ironic really because the Rover 75 turned out to be a far better car than the early Jag S types, even the motoring press at the time favoured the Rover, however I can see where the Taxi drivers are coming from, the Rover looks like you should be smoking a pipe whilst driving it where as the Jag has more youthful appeal. Note English Taxi drivers, now days they’re mainly from an immigrant background in London.

    I have always loved Jaguar over Rover, even though I have had 4 Rovers and 4 Jags, but in comparison to the S Type and the X Type, the Rover 2.5 SE or Connoisseur V6 is the better car.
    The Jags have far more "Fordy" cheap and tacky Mondeo parts as well as suffering "Rust" on ther sills as I have witnessed many X and S types literally falling to bits.
    Good on Rover for setting the bar here and this review is very lisleading as I think the drivers were in their early thirties which typified them as shallow, vain and image conscious!!!
    As I said the Rover is the better car 100%

    So much ignorance about the 75ZT range!Ok so 15 years has gone by since that Hammond review.
    What I can tell you is the Jag S type and other models of that era are disappearing to the pearly gates rapidly whereas the 75 lives on.
    Problem with S type is rusty sills and chassis members which doesn't happen with the Rover.

    This review does not go far enough to compare both vehicles. Running costs such as maintenance, repair, insurance, reliability should also become a factor to consider. Whilst some issues could not be judged at the time eg how reliable the car is over time but the cost of parts and labour in the service cycle can be. Fuel economy is also a factor that as not been addressed.

    Well this is quite an unfair comparison to be fair. It was even admitted it in the video......and then they went ahead with the comparison anyway! You can hardly compare the two for performance, when the smallest engine on the Jag is a 3lt V6. And the largest engine on the Rover is a 2.5lt V6. So the Jag is naturallly gonna trump the Rover in terms of performance. Incidentally, U never heard it mentioned which engine the Rover had in this test. If it was the 1.8, then the cheapest Jag is going to be nearly twice as big. Engine size aside, they are probably comparable in terms of build quality, fit, and finish, bearing in mind that the Jag is just a tarted up Ford Mondeo.

Both suffered major flaws and weaknesses, whether it may be performance (R75), marketing (both), packaging (R75), build quality (Jaguar)... However, it was the main concept of the cars that were the biggest faux pas.
    Heritage is only a strength if people remember or hold any importance to what a company _used_ to be.

    A few days ago I have seen Jaguar S-Type and I was convinced it was Rover until I saw letters J-A-G-U-A-R on the back of the car.. Now I see this comparison.. Its amazing how cheap the car similar to Jaguar can be..

    I've owned an SE S Type Jag for the last 2 yrs. take it from me, the Rover 75 is not a patch on the Jag, I can't believe they are being compared.
    The 75 should be compared against the Mondeo or Astra and they should be using BMW or Merc to compare the S Type with.
    This whole S Type/Rover 75 comparison is a joke!!

      pokejag04 garage I'm probably very biased as I own a rover 75, so obviously I prefer it, but I've never liked the look of the S type for some reason, I think it's the bulbous lights.

      unions100 The S-Type is no more than a Mondeo in a party frock, in all honesty. However, Jaguar does have a better image than Rover. That said, Rover did bring out some beautiful cars. The P5 and P6 were probably the most prestigious of recent history fir the company. And the SD1 could have been fantastic, if it were not for a bolshy Brummie workforce, and probably poor supply decisions. There are still a few cared for examples around, gladly.
