Saturn 4 Ultra: Elegoo's Biggest Upgrade in Resin 3D Printing

  • Just pour resin, it prints. That was my experience with the Saturn 4 Ultra. No Z-offset, no paper strips, no screws to adjust... Resin 3D Printing is very easy now - you just focus on Slicing it right.

    Levelling the Build Plate always made me a bit nervous: like, "I need to do it right..." Otherwise you would just discover it one hour later... And Cleaning a mess before trying again was no fun.
    The Saturn 4 takes out most of the difficulties. It is very automatic with a bunch of sensors to help. I won't say it is impossible to mess up. But the printer finally helps a lot to avoid problems.
    Sure, you still need to master the Slicing tools. And avoid making a mess with resins... and wear protection.

    How did you test if that latching mechanism is "perfect every time", didn't see a dial test indicator - just curious because it's a feature on a part of the printer I had trouble with in the past on other machines - overall repeatability.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You have a point: I didn’t use a needle dial to test for tolerance between each insert. What I know is: the old mounts (the ones with the ballheads) you could feel everytime you inserted it, they would rest in different positions and the paper tests indicated that the position was slightly different. The way this one on the Saturn 4 is machined is very different than that. It rests on a completely flat surface and you feel it. Also, the springs on the build plate guarantee the contact against the screen. So, yeah, even if it has any variation, the whole system actually worked fine for me perfectly in my test prints without the usual fussing that I was so (sadly) used to do. @FauxHammer just released his review - he printed way more than I did, and his results are the same: it just prints great and easy.

    Can you provide measurements of the printer with the lid raised, I would like to see does it fit my enclosure.
    Thank you

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sure! When the Lid is UP 90 degrees (it stays), you need 70cm of total height. You cannot safely operate it if you have less (the cover should at least rotate and become “horizontal”) it gets even taller if you continue pushing it more to the back. You need 43cm of depth with the lid opened. 33 is the depth of the printer with the lid closed.

    • @GeekDetour

I love the quality of the resin prints 😄 When I print resin, I set it and I go away… I finally have my Workshop separated from the house, so I “go back home”. A couple of questions.
    Did they go back to a lead screw? Or is it a ballscrew? Looks like a leadscrew but I have a hard time believing that.
    How much resin do you think you can fit in the vat with the tilt function on? Hoping the absolute max is 1L or more.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi there! It is indeed a normal, trapezoidal, LeadScrew - not a ballscrew. And for sure it is less than a 1L

      @@GeekDetour Thanks so much for the quick response!
      That's so disappointing they went back to a lead screw! This blows my mind.
      I was going to refresh my farm with the ultra's and this may actually be a deal breaker for me. Ballscrews are so much more reliable and durable than lead screws in my experience. I wonder if there's a way to mod this unit to upgrade it to a ballscrew.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      FauxHammer has a point in his review: on the Saturn 4 Ultra, the Build Plate travels much less, it actually just moves up when printing, not back and forth anymore. The repetitive motion is done by the tilt-release mechanism. So, the LeadScrew is probably good enough. The ballscrew could be completely overkill.

Other testers of the Saturn 4 Ultra out there have pointed out exactly the opposite: the camera is not IR, hence has no night mode ability, and indeed it cannot see in the dark at all. Someone even added an LED light strip inside the enclosure as a workaround!

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I should have rephrased that, would be most accurate to say: “the Lid is super dark when you see from outside - even so, if there some light on the room, it’s enough for the camera to see well.” You are right: in complete darkness, there won’t be anything to see.

    • @fluxcapacitor
      @fluxcapacitor 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@GeekDetour Ok. This makes me think: is it a good thing to light up the interior of the enclosure with white LEDs to record prints at night? I wonder if these LEDs, that emit in the visible spectrum, don't shine also some of their power in the UV spectrum - that would slowly cure the resin into the vat, if it's the case.

      Not so sure… I already printed with resin that was completely still in the VAT, completely without bubbles, but in the very top layer of the print, I saw those tiny holes. It’s not along the print, nor under the build plate.

      Hi there! Well, the Saturn 3 and 3 Ultra have the same form factor outside (besides the color). And I had a 3 to show (not Ultra). Your point?

    Funny how the flood of vids covering this device present like corporate talking g points rather than open critique. I cant respect the greed motive, ever. Bye for good.

      No problem man! VOG just made a video you will like, sharing lots of thing he thinks this printer lacks - but again, it wouldn’t cost USD 399 🤷‍♂️ I am excited with what it delivers for the price, otherwise, everybody would buy FormLabs printers 🤣
