Re: "Astronomy Domine" lyrics: not just space influenced (Dan Dare being a British sci-fi hero), but Shakespeare, as well, Oberon and Titania being the Farie king and queen from A MIDSUMMERS NIGHT'S DREAM. And it's tempting to call out the acid influence, but Syd Barrett was really getting his inspiration from English poetry and children's tales, like Hilaire Belloc, and Kenneth Graham's THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS ("The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" was a chapter in that book, referring to the Greek god Pan, and his panflute, and depicted as a sublime encounter with God.) That kind of influence is lost on American listeners, especially today, so it's easy to think it's just acid-inspired.

Well, the names of those characters in _A Midsummer Night's Dream_ are also used for some of the outer planets' moons, so it's kinda both.

@@Engineer_Who Good point about the moons. And strengthens the overall connection between the spaciness and the English literature of Syd's lyrics. Really emphasizing the esoteric astrological nature of the sci-fi influence in pyschedelia ("Age of Aquarius"), rather than astronomonical, straight-up hard-core science fiction.

@@joemaurone7923 It is interesting that you mention the "Age of Aquarius". According to top astrologers, most claim they predicted it too early, the late 60's. However, there was an explosion of artistic creativity, especially in music and lifestyle interests. They have now begun to say 2021 will begin this New Age of Enlightenment, Aquarius. So, it may be time for a change in colors, thoughts and sound. Can't wait to hear where this leads. The last couple of years have been such a drag in almost every way.

Good comment! I see you've done your research on Syd Barrett which I always appreciate. Never has there been another rock musician surrounded by so many rumors, myths and legends as Syd Barrett. This unfortunately makes him underappreciated and viewed as some mythological acid freak who took too much LSD which in turn made him write trippy psychedelic songs. In reality Syd was a hard working, well-read and extremely talented artist. He was very dedicated to his craft and aside from one song, he wrote and composed all of the songs on Piper along with the Floyd's early singles. He even created the album's sleeve design. The LSD didn't write these songs and didn't do any of the work. Syd did. On Syd's first solo album, The Madcap Laughs, upon first listening to the song 'Octopus', one could easily mistaken its meaning and think the lyrics are some sort of drug-fueled word salad when instead it is filled with many brilliant literary references from Syd's favorite poets and writers. And this was all done after he went "crazy". Don't get me wrong, the man definitely suffered from some sort of mental issue whether it was mental illness, a breakdown, anxiety or depression but he didn't go crazy and doctors never diagnosed him as schizophrenic as some suggested. According to his sister Rosemary, the doctors said Syd was simply different. I truly hope people stop viewing Syd as some mythological drug hero and start appreciating Syd Barrett the artist and musician.

I think a lot of this early Pink Floyd needs more appreciation. Some of this album has the most fantastic child-like wonder. As you venture into early Floyd you'll likely come to feel Nick Mason is an under-appreciated and imaginative drummer. Also the major importance of Rick Wright to deliver fantastic moods throughout. You may find it interesting that the Beatles were recording Sgt Pepper close by during these sessions. Enjoy!!

Syd Barret the magical brat. His songs are so listenable; good grooves, bizarre bits, experimental sounds. And the whole band is all in at this point, creating incredible music together. I've been into this album since the 70s and dig the shit out of it. Pink Floyd at the very beginning is just as magical as they are later. More so in a way, because Syd Barret was so...Syd.
BTW it's totally cool if you want to do a couple songs in a reaction Justin. However the moment moves you is the way to go.

Oh HELL yes. So glad you're listening to _Piper!_ It's incredible.
First, kudos for pronouncing "Domine" correctly. Rarely do first-timers ever get it exactly right.
You're right on the money with psychedelic rock being all about the little things and experimentation.
Yes! One of the things I love about Pink Floyd is their consistency across the years. I can listen to tracks from _The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Final Cut,_ and _A Momentary Lapse of Reason_ and still hear something unified in their spirit. People talk about "the sound change" after Barrett left, but I don't hear it. To me, every single Pink Floyd track has *The Pink Floyd Sound.*
"Astronomy Domine" is probably my favorite Barrett-era Floyd track. The rollicking drums, the monotonous guitar that just takes off, the spacy organ, the harmonies that are just OH. (Chef's kiss)

As a whole album this one is still my favourite PF. I love the contrast of the spacey sounds and some of the songs that can seem a little childish on the surface. But I always thought it is the simplicity that makes them great. Until now I cannot decide if Astronomy Domine, Lucifer Sam, Matilda Mother or Chapter 24 is the one I like the most on this album.
I think after more than 50 years it is not possible to imagine the impact of this album on music espacially on an emotional level. It was different from almost everything else. And that is probably the reason why there are a lot of people including me who like this album most. Of all the things they did later only "Echoes" caught me in an almost similar way.

About ten years ago, a Pink Floyd cover band (Think Floyd) played at our little annual music festival in my small Wisconsin town, and this was the song they opened with. While the bulk of the audience, who were there for "Money" and "Comfortably Numb", stood there, almost stunned, wondering what the hell they were listening to, my buddy and me were punching each other on the arm and loving the Sid tune. It was really funny to see the puzzled looks on most of the faces around us.

The first time I heard "Astronomy Domine"/PIPER, it was the version from A NICE PAIR (a reissue that also came with the 2nd album, A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS.) That version had the live version from UMMAGUMMA (because that's how record companies rolled, back in the day), and I that's the version that got imprinted on me. When I finally heard THIS version, it was so different. I like both, but I always preferred the UMMAGUMMA version, because Gilmour's middle section was more musical, like a violin solo. (That's the version that Voivoid based their cover on, btw). But this grew on me after a while, and I came to appreciate the soundscapes as an end in themselves. Viva la difference.

    • @cwilliamrose
      @cwilliamrose 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I too am hooked on the live version from UMMAGUMMA. Most of the times when I heard Astronomy Domine we were at the apartment I shared with my best friend. He had a pet bird and that bird would break into song at exactly the same point during Astronomy Domine without fail. I still remember that exact point in the song because the bird's song became part of the song for us and all our friends who were getting into Pink Floyd. It sounds strange to hear that song now without the bird's vocals.........

Here is a strong recommendation for something you might enjoy. "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii", a concert filmed at the amphitheatre excavated from the Roman ruins there. No audience, well filmed. It is from the time of "Meddle", and David Gilmore and the rest are so YOUNG! Rick Wright sings alot. Pre-Darkside. They play some Syd Barrett stuff, like "Careful with that Axe, Eugene!" Echoes is just unbelievable. And "Seamus",(,pronounced Shame-us,) features the singing doggie. So cute! The theatrical release is better than the director's cut.

It is really great that you are going back to the beginning. So glad that you did the two songs together. Your reaction when you came off at the end of them saying that you "just had to" was the purest indicator that you were enjoying what you were hearing. Astronomy Domine is a really good signpost along the road to Echoes and just shows that David was as much an integral part of the band as Syd was when it came to musical ideas. As for Lucifer Sam, well that is pure Syd. Just imagine these tracks being played as extended jams with the emphasis being on the light show that was being projected onto the backdrop and even onto the band. All through their career the lights were just as important a part of the live experience as the music was.
I got to see them in the '80's and '90's and they didn't bother with the huge screens for you to see the individuals like you got elsewhere... the music and the lights were what you were there for. I will never forget looking around a 70 odd thousand seater stadium and seeing everyone singing along to the songs. It was an amazing moment. ( SORRY FOR THE RAMBLE ).

Confluences are important. In ninth grade, in my mind occurred a confluence of the new and cosmic music of the day, which merged well with advances in the quality of smoke, also newly discovered. Floyd's Ummagumma, Moody's Om and Legend of a Mind, Elp's Tarkus, Genesis Selling England, Strawbs' Hero & Heroine, Gryphon, Annie's Renaissance, Rivers and Oceans of Yes, and other huge projects, like Noah's, while it lasted, before the reining in and corralling. You are finding it all, and what a wondrous way to relive that creative peak. You remind me of Robert Benchley, for some reason. One of our greatest humorists. Intelligence.

This was recorded at Abbey Road Studios at the same time as Sgt. Pepper's. There is not a lot of Pink Floyd album material featuring Syd Barrett. This album, plus three songs on their second album, and of those only Jugband Blues is truly a Barrett track. There were several songs recorded that were not released on album until years later on compilations. Originally they were released on 7" singles or not released at all. Also Barrett had two solo albums released in 1970, and again much later a third album of archival material. Syd was a unique guitar player, and even many Floyd fans don't realize, but Gilmour originally taught him how to play when they were young friends. Barrett was a poet-lyricist who influenced so very many people that followed. Non-album Floyd songs featuring Barrett: Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, Apples And Oranges, Candy And A Currant Bun, Paint Box, and Scream Thy Last Scream.

I don't revel in being a contrarian, but I have owned every Pink Floyd album from the first to the second to last, and at this point in my life I can't listen to any of their stuff post-Meddle. I've heard it to death over the decades and just don't want to hear it anymore. However, this album continues to be a brilliant burst of acid rock that never ceases to delight me, and I love that you are connecting with it so quickly. There is a fun quality at work here that poor Syd would take with him as he went down as one of music history's most notorious acid casualties. In an amusing aside, while you were reciting the lyrics to "Lucifer Sam", our black cat, Tura Satana, came into the room to say hello. Carrie-Ann is begging you to listen to "The Nile Song", which they did a couple years later. It's the hardest rocking Pink Floyd song ever, and we wish they did more like it.

I must admit I like archeology, as this is musical archeology. Probably why I keep re-watching Time Team episodes (British reality show based on archeology). Happily they are being reissued on YT but, sadly, they are not in chronological order.
    Great review as always. Thanks.

Lucifer Sam is a great, follow up for me, once again tgat driving guitar by Syd.. Backed up Nick, s drums. 😊 Reminds me of the Beatles tbh butty 😊

Oh yes!! Piper At The Gates Of Dawn! I'm expecting there to be a split here amongst Floyd fans. I think most dig/know the band from Dark Side onwards, but to me their earlier stuff is way more interesting. I bought Ummagumma
in '71, and then Dark Side, but after that....? nah, not really for me. I went back to discover their earlier stuff and still love it today. I've friends who love their later stuff, but can't get into the early Floyd at all. Bottom line...., great band whether you like Moon onwards, or their first half dozen albums. I hope you give the rest of the album a spin, because hopefully those who haven't heard it before might be able to appreciate why some of us tend to prefer it to their later recordings.

It's really pleasant to watch you discovering great albums, you seem to be a nice guy. Good musical culture, good analises, no interruption during the listening, no exaggerated reactions... in my opinion you're the best YT "first listener". It's said !
The piper is one of the last floyd album that i discoverd and it's my favorite... but i can not really explain why ? Il love so much (even more than "much") animals, the wall, WYWH, DSOTM and songs like echoes (even atom heart mother), but when i first listened the piper it was awesome !
Maybe because of the guitar playing of Syd ? Maybe because of the Syd's voice ? Maybe because of what this album represents for psychedelic music and later prog' ? Maybe because i knew the Syd's story ? You've said several times that Pink floyd works on the emotion and the sound. Here the album is certainly imperfect for lot of floyd's fans. I think this album doesn't play with my feelings or emotions... it plays with all my body, physically ! And it's so good ! Sorry for my english !

Glad you’re impressed with Syd’s work. Excellent album by any standards, never mind a debut...
But it does highlight the pity that the drugs which allowed Sud’s creativity to blossom wee also responsible for his mental illness which destroyed him. The second album (Saucerful of Secrets) is less impressive because Syd was barely involved and Gilmore hadn’t found his feet yet

I just love how those young green newcomers actually managed to influence The Beatles on Sgt. Pepper's, just because they were in neighboring studios at Abbey Road and spent too much time together during session breaks. Syd was the Peter Pan of the industry, a grown up child. Very playful, energetic and charismatic, everybody loved the guy at first sight. That made the upcoming turn of events even more tragic. Anyone with young kids, play them The Gnome, they'll love it! Same goes for Bike, but careful: the 2nd part WILL give them nightmares. :D

This was recorded at Abbey Road at the same time that the Beatles were making Sgt. Peppers across the hallway. Norman Smith produced Floyd's debut, after he'd been promoted from being lead engineer on the Beatles' early recordings.
And this may seem under-appreciated to folks today, but in 1967 PF burst loudly onto the scene. They even toured the U.S. Their early fame even carried Syd Barrett long enough to allow him to make two solo albums after he'd been fired from PF because he'd fried his brain. But everyone acknowledges that it was Syd's weird creativity that set them on the path that would eventually lead to mega-stardom. And without that early Floyd there might not have been bands like Gong or Steve Hillage or Ozric Tentacles or Porcupine Tree.

Great to do two songs together particularly if they link in some way. Actually I think that whole side reactions would be a good idea given the amount of material available to react to. It would cover more ground and, in respect of vinyl period albums, it would allow you to experience the music as it was intended to be heard instead of having to nibble at it track by track, potentially missing a larger composition.

Astronomy Domine was one of the first Floyd songs I heard, as a high school freshman, but was the live version (which really kicks butt): a friend had turned me on to the Ummagumma album - I thought it was the craziest coolest music I had ever heard (including the "Several Small Species..." song", I shortly after found the "Obscured By Clouds", "Atom Heart Mother" and "Meddle" albums, so I missed out on the earlier stuff. Although PF is my favorite group of all time (saw them in concert 1977), I find their early works difficult to listen to.

Justin, you consistently astound me. Lucifer Sam is one of my favorites and one I still play occasionally when jamming with my drummer friend. Way back in middle school I preferred Astronomy Domine, but somewhere through the years Sam became the friend I listened to most. You probably realize Sam is an actual cat. The tune has an almost spy show theme to me. Commenting before watching this time as I had to. I shall now see how you fare. Great reaction Justin! Looking forward to your journey through this album. If you want to hear what they do with Astronomy Domine later in their career, they revisit this song for their 1994 tour and play it at roughly half of their shows. Its sped up and a little more refined. The B-side to the Take It Back single is by far my favourite version of the song. It's from March 30th at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami. There's a BBC performance of "Astronomy Domine" that's kinda funny...it's in black and white, with a very uptight British host...he picks on the Floyd, asking "But why does it have to be so LOUD?", and then, "it's all very much a reversion to childhood, but then again, why not?"

Yesssss! Starting at the start :D Early Pink Floyd is amazing and Barrett is sooooo creative. Definitely awesome you just went for the second song.
They were big at the time of these first two albums, but mostly just big in an underground way--with really out there psychedelic bands like Soft Machine and Gong or proto-Gong or whatever. It wasn't something everyone was able to 'get' at the time; to some they were a weird novelty band. But I don't think they were nearly the household name they would become until Dark Side of the Moon (I imagine, anyway! I could be wrong).
Oh shoot woah! Are you going to finish the Snow Goose? I was just remembering how awesome that album is.
Guess you were right about Lucifer Sam being about watching a cat on acid, except oh... there's a twist lol! 5:51 - I'm thinking that's the cat swishing off to another side of the room. That's pretty cute actually.
Pretty sad story with Syd Barrett though. LSD probably did heighten his creativity for a few years, but he was naturally a highly creative person (he was a painter was going to art school) and then he just didn't function--I forget in exactly what way, it was a long time ago I read a biography of him. His friendships with the other members of the band fell apart, he did a couple solo albums (I heard one, it is really quite cool), but then I think all his relationships fell apart and he withdrew from everyone; before much longer he wouldn't make music, or art at all I think. Eventually he did return to painting and lived a quiet life.

Astronomy Domine, the most underrated song in the history of music, probably because most Americans haven't heard it. It has been said Lucifer Sam refers to an unwelcome male courtier of Syd's one time girlfriend "Jennifer Gentle", referred to as "a witch". Syd, much to his displeasure, would often find "Sam", close alongside Jenny Spires, like a "Siam cat". A "cat" being a man in the period vernacular, Syd wishing him away to be a "hip cat". Syd also owned a Siamese cat apparently, so we'll never know. Pink Floyd didn't produce the stereo version. It 's down to EMi engineers. Floyd produced the mono version which sounds rawer and more like a band. Most fans seem to prefer it. I like the Stereo version too with the exception of some awful back and forth channel switching from time to time.

Ha, I've never heard these tunes, very 60's psychedelia... really cool. Makes sense I would be getting a Beatles vibe on the first song. While The Beatles were making "Sgt. Pepper's" down the hall Pink Floyd were making this more psychedelic album. It has a youthful energy you don't find in later Floyd albums. This was the psychedelic era. Sadly Syd would only contribute to a couple of songs on their 2nd album, his divorce from reality was becoming finalized.
The last PF tribute band I saw opened with 'Astronomy Domine', it was brilliant. On 'Lucifer Sam' you can hear the 2nd guitar making whining cat sounds, sort of jazzy too.
