    "Astronomy Domine" from the fantastic "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" album. Syd Barrett was an exceptional songwriter. "Piper" and "Saucerful" show the transition in PF's music from Barrett as guitarist and songwriter to Gilmour as guitarist and Waters as more important songwriter. Barrett's compositions always had something playful and humorous about them. Waters always added something dark and mysterious to his melodies, but this was by no means less interesting or worse.
    I like The Who's later songs better. "I Can See For Miles" is a bit of psychedelia, a dash of Pink Floyd and The Byrds and a hint of Beatles and The Kinks. And so there you have it.

    Pleasantly shocked by inclusion of Petula here. Her 60s output definitely deserves a deeper dive (short songs) - I Know A Place, My Love, Sign Of The Times, Couldn’t Live Without Your Love

    DUDE….. what’s going on here??? Just threes days and 10 songs!! I’ve been LOVING the ride so far this week! I remember my parents playing “Alfie” when I was like 7 years old, it still sounds as good! Enjoyed Petula Clark as well, I remember this song as well as “Downtown”. I actually saw “Astronomy Domine” live in ‘94 when Pink Floyd opened the show with it!! I also got to see “I Can See For Miles” live when I saw Roger Daltrey. Looking forward for tomorrow. 😊

      I've gone insane.....5 songs tomorrow!!! Then it will mostly slow down for the rest of the week. Well, I certainly crammed in all I could haha. Next 60s week will be just 14 songs, because today alone took 7.5 hours minimum from start to finish! 🤪 Such a fun ride though and I know I will enjoy the rest of the week. Glad you knew and liked all these songs. I have to watch the '94 version of AD ASAP!

    Another one from Petula Clark that is superb: " Downtown "(which our host says he knows, sigh). " Astronomy Domine " is still fresh today, Syd(RIP)Barrett's best composition(Psychedelic much?). Forgot how good Dionne Warwick was. The natural companion to " I Can See For Miles " is " My Generation "

    • @retroreactions....

      Yes, I assume Downtown is huge, but I want to hear more from her on my own! Loved AD, so cool hearing Syd's stamp all over this Floyd song. Dionne blew me away in this one. Ah yes, I've heard My Generation as well. Thanks for the daily watch my friend 🙂

    I wore out my vinyl record of Dionne Warwick's greatest hits back in the 60's, listening to same song over and over again. In fact, I remember Mom knocking on bedroom door asking, "Could you PLEASE play something else?"
    I know your 1960's dance card is already jam packed this week, butbi think you'd love another Dionne Warwick movie theme song, Thene from The Valley of the Dolls. Even at my young age the music and lyrics were haunting.
    60's Week - Great Idea!

      @retroreactions....  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha cool memory you shared. Was the song Alfie? Hmm, I wonder if I've heard "Valley" before. I definitely have loved "Deja Vu" since the early 80s! Loving this 60s week and it will be back next year!

      @@retroreactions.... Alfie was absolutely on that album and one of my favorite songs, empathetic lyrics. As was A House is Not Home, Message to Michael, Say a Little Prayer and Theme from the Valley of the Dolls. It's unlikely you ever heard it. It's not a song that would have gotten played on the radio much. If you decide to listen to it, be prepared to FEEL.

    God, I love Syd Barrett! It's heartbreaking to think of what a genius talent we lost. You should listen to some of his solo stuff - Dark Globe, Octopus, Terrapin, Gigolo Aunt, Baby Lemonade - he was so bloody good it makes you want to cry.

    • @retroreactions....
      @retroreactions....  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Just learning or being reminded that he went solo after the PF "oust". Were the solo songs similar to this one?

    • @alisonanthony1228
      @alisonanthony1228 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @retroreactions.... No, they were different but still brilliant. In some of them you can almost hear his mind breaking but the genius still shines through. His solo album were produced by David Gilmour who's said that it was incredibly frustrating working with Syd, but also humbling how easily the words and music fell out of him. I'd recommend starting with Dark Globe and Dominoes - Gilmour often plays these at his gigs in tribute to Syd - as they're, probably, the easiest introduction to our beloved Madcap

    I noticed nobody is saying anything about the Who. In my opinion the top three most important, influential bands to ever come out of Great Britain are, 1) The Beatles, 2) The Rolling Stones and 3) The Who. I Can See For Miles was their breakthrough single in America. It is a perfect combination of psychedelia, punk, pop and just good old rock and roll.

    Astronomy Domine is proof positive that Syd's Floyd and classic 70's Floyd were not so wildly dissimilar as some claim. Analogizing their career as a rocket launch, Syd captained the ship as it blasted confidently off the pad, but he lost control and blew out an engine. Upon his removal, the rest of the crew faced a desperate struggle to right the tumbling vessel, which of course after much button pushing and lever pulling, they eventually did. No matter how much distance they put between their launchsite and the whirling stars, without Syd's input of that initial trajectory, they'd have never gotten off the ground.

    • @retroreactions....
      @retroreactions....  ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @goytabr

    Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach are the very definition of "match made in the heavens". Burt's songs are best expressed by Dionne, and Dionne is at her best when she sings Burt. "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Always Something There to Remind Me", "Make It Easy on Yourself" and so many others were all amazing. And I agree, her voice aged so well! Not many singers can claim that - Ella Fitzgerald comes to mind, but Ella wasn't a singer, she was a GODDESS!
    I'm not very much into Petula, perhaps because I hate the arrangements in most of her songs - they suffocated her voice, when it should have been enhanced. But I can see how influential she was. And I can see very well the young Annie Haslam (I told you how she began her career with a crash singing course over a few months without any previous experience) using Petula as her role model. Understandable and a wise choice!
    Although the first two Pink Floyd albums sound very different from the Gilmour era (although Gilmour was already in "Saucerful", it still sounded more like "Piper", though "Saucerful" is a lot more dramatic), you can already see some of the elements that would make them so great: the complete lack of fear of experimentation (and even more importantly, experimentation THAT WORKED!), their use of ambience, the mood turns, their penchant for "spacey" sounds. It's hard to imagine what they would have been if Syd hadn't broken down. It had to be, it seems.
    "I Can See for Miles" is, appropriately enough, a milestone in The Who's musical evolution. Early The Who was very crude, but here they were starting to get more refined. It's amazing how this song is in many ways a preview of the sound they would make later in "Tommy", though the latter is much more elaborate and sophisticated, yet the groundwork had already been laid. And I was impressed by how their characteristic that I most admire and love was already present: they were unrivalled masters in building up moods and atmospheres that involve you without you even noticing, and in the end you're totally engaged into it without realizing how you got there.
