    When you get the guitar player and the bass player of Iron Butterfly, the first singer of Deep Purple and the drummer of Johnny Winter you have a supergroup. Unfortunately the record company did not promote the album, so it kind of went into oblivion, which is completely undeserved; it should have gotten wide recognition back then. I (Friederike) heard it on some radio show in the 80s or 90s that specialized in broadcasting forgotten gems. They played the whole album, and I just loved it.

      I grew up pretty close to Birmingham, Al back in the 70s, we had a d.j. when F. M. first got going strong and that guy, really there were a few d.j.s we had but my favorite was the one who called him self Father Tree, when I first found FM music I remember that this was one of the first bands I ever heard and am pop radio was in my rear view mirror. Father tree played anything from Arlo Guthrie to Nazareth . You're right, never could figure out how this band wasn't up there with Deep Purple and Zepplin.

      BIRTH OF METAL!!!! Some say the NYC band Sir Lord Baltimore (who's debut was about the same time as CB) were the fathers of Space Metal. But I think CB's sound is cleaner & songs more creative. However the Baltimore albums are quality stuff -- it's just that CB is so monstrously good to me there's really no comparison.

    Ned from Spain here to say thank you thank you again and again. Captain Beyond were sort of under the radar even back in the day and forgotten for a long time. When the 70's music revival was happening in the late 80's early 90's they were given a new lease on life. Monster Magnet used the riff of Mesmerization Eclipse for their song Twin Earth and openly admitted it. CB were a supergroup made up of master drummer Bobby Caldwell who wrote the music with Rod Evans who was Deep Purples 1st vocalist. Truly an essential underground album and a touchstone for the Stoner bands in the 1990s and now.

    I got interested in this group because of Rod Evans. Deep Purple's first 3 albums which he sang on are my favorite period of that band, psychedelic folk-rock, before they moved into more hard rock. They did a couple of Beatles covers and Neil Diamond's 'Kentucky Woman' and also 'Hey Joe'.

    Drummer Bobby Caldwell is a genius. Singer Rod Evans do some percussion work on the album too. I'm so glad you took the advice and did the whole album in it's entirety and in proper order. Because it's a journey. This album is in my top ten off all time. Alongside albums like "Master of Reality" and "Electric Ladyland".

    This was an inspired choice to react to. Thank you for your attention to details on this amazing album. If you see my comment. I am going to suggest another proto metal album from 1972 by a band called Ursa Major which included the amazing talents of rock studio guitarist Dick Wagoner who played some of the the most amazing and memorable leads and licks from the 70s. He is all over Aerosmith " Get Your Wings" album and also part of Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal Band as well as Alice Cooper's go to guitarist from 1974 to 1979. Until I heard Ursa Major album I was not even aware that this guy also had a fantastic singing voice.

    Deep Purple MK I is my favorite incarnation of the band because of Rod Evans. I just love this entire album so much. Great way to wake up on a Saturday.
    I'm still holding onto the hope that you'll someday give Bobby Caldwell's later band, Armageddon, a listen. Another great supergroup which also included former Yardbirds and Renaissance vocalist Keith Relf. Very heavy. Fun!

    Captain Beyond couldn't be labeled since the band constantly went from hard rock to space rock then launched without warning into progressive rock or jazz rock or even into Latin rock if the urge arose, that's probably the reason why the band didn't break into the narrow world of the music business and that's a real shame because all of its members were all very talented.
    Their second album Sufficiently Breathless (from 1973) awaits you with open arms!😉 (although the musical orientation is much softer than before but still remains of quality).
    About Rod Evans, know that he was fired from Deep Purple mid 1969 mainly by Ritchie Blackmore who wanted to make Purple a hard rock band and felt that Evans was too soft for his taste !!!!🙄 ...same excuse with their former bassist Nick Simper, who founded the band Warhorse just after his ousting and whose debut album (released in 1970) hit almost as hard as In Rock!!! (if one day you want to listen to it....😉).

    • @wendellwiggins3776
      @wendellwiggins3776 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I love them both but I & most would not technically put them in ProgRock even though progressive Hard Rock might be suitable. Bluesy leaning bands don't really fit the mold. But this 1972 debut CB album kicked butt sending our 16 year old butts climbing the walls. So did Crack in the Sky's debut which I played endlessly which did remind me of the sophistication, trippy & funkiness of Captain Beyond!

    • @MidwesternCornbilly
      @MidwesternCornbilly 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would have loved to have seen both of them live. I know they both still play small clubs with limited east coast touring...especially Crack The Sky. I am just thankful that the Captain Beyond 1971 Montreux concert was recorded and survived. The newer video is really good also and Bobby Caldwell still has his drumming chops.

    The drummer Bobby Caldwell was only 21 years old when this record came out! He had gotten the drum gig in Johnny Winter And as a 19 year old! He was 19 and 20 on the Johnny Winter And LIVE Album. Caldwell went on to do one album with a band called ARMAGEDDON! Bobby actually got the gig Through the great drummer Aynsley Dunbar! Armageddon was looking for a drummer, and 24 year old Bobby came along. Bobby's last recording was in 1977 Captain Beyond's "Dawn Explosion" And remember These are the days of NO CLICK TRACK..Even live Bobby's time was impecable

  • @randallbrown3317

    Duane Allman is the one that told Capricorn Records to record these guys. Allman loved Bobby Caldwell's drumming. Johnny Winter And was opening up shows for the Allman Brothers, and it was where Duane would watch Bobby from back stage curtain. Then he'd tell Butch how great the drummer was!! I believe if Duane would have not died, he would have done a project which included Bobby Caldwell on drums. On Bobby's time off, he'd always catch a flight to where the Allman Brothers were playing and play percussion.

  • @MissAstorDancer

    Well, I know I wrote a frickin' book in response to your "Sufficiently Breathless" album, so I will spare you that this time. Just gotta tell ya I really dug hearing this again with you! And, yes, I most def CAN imagine seeing them live! One of the most intense, hypnotic and, yes, beautiful concerts ever! (Ju;y 14, 1972, Jo Jo Gunne, Captain Beyond and Alice Cooper!) It was hard to decide who had the better costumes, CB or AC! With those three bands, it was an absolute face-melting sensory overload for nearly 3 hours, leaving the audience slack-jawed and spent!
    I'm gonna go out on a limb, and make a suggestion, based on the fact that you took the risk on this album! I want to recommend you do a reaction to the band Trapeze, the album "Medusa" from 1970. Even though they were a couple of years apart, I also saw Trapeze TWICE during that same 3 or 4 year period. Frankly, I think it's a better album than this one! Every single song is fire, not a speck of cereal! Trapeze also has a cool history I think you will find interesting! Hope I'm not the only one left here who is as old as I am, who might have dug Trapeze, as well!
    Thanks so much for the fun, JP! You are killing it, as usual!

    I really enjoyed the album review. Maybe it was because I was hearing it in a different format - through good PC speakers - and I'm sure it's been re-mastered - but I still heard new layers. You mentioned Hawkwind, so I'm guessing you like the space rock sub-genre. If you have never heard Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come "Journey" I would recommend you review it. Another space rock album, that in my opinion stands entirely on it's own. Not sure how to categorize it, but definitely exceptional. BTW, Captain Beyond tried a reformation in the late 90s and I caught one of their Florida shows in a small venue w Reino, Caldwell, and Artabasy.

    A guy told me he saw them live in Abilene or somewhere out in west TX on the same bill with Blues Image (Ride Captain Ride). He said Rod Evans came out dressed just like the picture on the album cover & even had the ball in his hand. Rhino had a 1 foot tall red afro & Dorman was signaling the light show operators on where to direct the lasers. Bobby Caldwell had a humongous mother -of-pearl/Ivory drum set that had tomtoms with giant round bottoms that were connected with large tubes similar to Alex Van Halen's. He said he's never seen another one like it since. He said he refrained from getting high because he wanted to experience the show without dulled senses. After the show, he said he felt like he was tripping on acid & could barely walk out lol.

At 16 this had us High School pre-Metal lovers climbing the WALLS. It was so Hard but Slick, Sophisticated and FUNKY. There is also a lot of Latin Rhythmic moments which they used more on their next album "Sufficiently". This Debut is a RARE progressive HARD ROCK GEM. Fortunately at the time we had little to compare this too accept for maybe Sabbath, Led Zep, Uriah Heep & Deep Purple. BTW, Captain Beyond consisted of former Deep Purple singer Rod Evans, former Johnny Winter drummer Bobby Caldwell, former Iron Butterfly guitarist Larry Reinhardt and Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman. The band had an eclectic style bridging elements of hard rock, progressive rock and jazz fusion with space rock. ALSO, Reinhardt revealed that while Butterfly and Yes were on the bus touring: "After a real long night with a pipe, we all partook in some attitude adjustment for the long ride - I was coming out of the bus, and Chris Squire from Yes looked at my blood-red eyes and said: 'Goddamn, you look like Captain Beyond! '. (((LOL)))) The name stuck with me ever since". AND there is a RARE LIVE VIDEO on TH-cam!!!!! and the original Album Cover had a 3D IMAGE effect of the Captain figure for all us Trippers and Stoners. Afterwards, comparatively not many Hard Rock or what became Metal acts appealed to me. PURE PROG became my primary ROCK of choice so I was snobbish about all the weak commercial Copycats that came later although CRACK IN THE SKY were very close to having a similar sound, intensity, sophistication and clever dynamics years later. Check out their FULL DEBUT LP too!

    Having only given passing attention to Captain Beyond before, I was surprised how much I enjoyed listening to this. Rod Evans is a more interesting singer here than he was with Deep Purple. I always though his writing for Deep Purple was pretty strong, and this confirms what he was capable of.

    I saw them in San Diego in 1972 when they opened for Alice Cooper. They were so great live that I found the album disappointing when I bought it later. IMHO the album pales in comparison. Still, all in all, a good, solid band that I wish I had heard their album before seeing them live. Even so, I did think they outshined Alice Cooper.

    Funny you mentioned Yes because they were opening for Iron Butterfly in 1971 while Reinhardt and Dorman were in Butterfly. Yes eventually bought Iron Butterfly's PA system.

    About time JP.... WooWho!!👊 - i have a treasured Captain Beyond t-shirt..... I've been asking you to do this forever anda day....(RIP Rhino & Lee Dorman) It's a shame Bobby Caldwell screwed Captain Beyond up the way he did.... he left on the second album which, whilst not as good as this is still excellent then, reappears on their last effort with a crappy new singer... another good album Caldwell appears on similar to Captain Beyond is the UK band Armageddon. They made one album and he is on it along with Keith Relf of the Yardbirds.... it's really good to. 👈JP

    Hmmm. I was 16 in '73 and thought I knew every group of the period, but I have no memory of CB. The biggest connection I hear is the Jimi Hendrix Experience - both the overall sound, and the voice. Excellent.

    For me Bobby Caldwell is star of the band, Side Two is one of the strongest half albums there is. It's too bad they couldn't recreate the magic of this first album. Another big influence I hear when I listen to Captain Beyond is Hawkwind one of the most influential and important Space Rock bands ever.

    Good album. Why wasn't it bigger? I think that it was maybe a year too late. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and others had all released some of their best albums before this (yes, I know that Evans was in Purple Mark 1) and another album in that same genre would have had to bring something new to the table to stand out amongst these better examples. Great name for a band though.

    OMG!!!! I missed this one. THIS ALBUM is ICONIC and a Progressive HARDROCK enigma from the great & amazing year of 1972. We Rocked out to this. A CLASSIC MASTERPIECE in its time. Mesmerizing Rock. In my TOP ROCKERS OF ALL TIME. Luckily ZEP didnt release am album that year so CB RULED. Their next two were good but this one is their 1st and best. Did you the Latin vibes which are more obvious on next LPs..Also this original album cover had a 3D effect image of the Captain

    I know this is historically back to front, but they remind me a lot of Chicago band *Eye* , as far as the rhythmic pace/ energy goes, among other things. (If you liked this, you'll enjoy what you find if you search for something like "eye band" on TH-cam - as long as you don't mind that they have a shredding trans girl called Lisa Bella Donna on guitar - since some people prefer the trans girl in the band to do the miming).
    There are influences from everywhere showing (or so I imagine, I suppose). Santana makes a subtler showing long before the Latin percussion kicks in. I even thought I heard a bit of reggae, but can't remember where. Definitely heard that Yes. But there's plenty of pure Captain Beyond, too.
    I really enjoyed this one - especially the ridiculous New Age aspects. :D (I like having things to not take too seriously in an album, if possible.)

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's *Searching* by *Eye* just to make that part easier.
      (If you want to hear some interesting prog-rock synth music do a search on Lisa Bella Donna. You might not be disappointed. I'd say you _won't_ be disappointed, but suppose I should qualify that with, "unless you're easily disappointed" :D )

      *The Mothership* (main selection criterion apart from liking it: it's just over 5 min long, not an entire concert). th-cam.com/video/nIRQbIckYPo/w-d-xo.html (You'll hear some Kraftwerk influences, I think.)
      (Oh, it's by *Lisa Bella Donna* )

    I heard this exact band live at Nashville Speedway 1972.
    They were a live band they had so much talent .
    This is what we called,Heavy Rock to distinguish from the norm.
    Check out Bobby Caldwell with Johny And Live
    Yes this was on fm radio with Ozzy, the Stones. Alice, Allman Brother. Deep Purple on and on.
    They were up there with Purple, Zeppelin, Cactus.
    Caldwell’s is arguable one of the best rock drummers of the early 70s..

    Bobby Caldwell played with Johnny Winter 14:43 arguably the best drummer in rock in the day.
    Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt , guitar Iron Butterfly
    Lee Dorman bass, Iron Butterfly
    A true super band.
    Here is a rare 20 + minute live concert of them playing songs off of this album.
