    Pink Floyd wishes that they had an ounce of Voivod's talent and innovation.

    Pink Floyd "Saucerful of secrets, 1968" was the 1st album I bought solely for the Psychedelic Rock, 1 of the best albums imo. Astronomy was off their 1st album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, 1967". This was the best song off that album imo. Brings back the hippy stoned, black light poster days. VOIVOD does a pretty good job on their cover, kudos to them. Well, guess I'll light up a joint "legal in Canada now", lay back and forget about covid, racism, corrupted politicians for awhile. Nice reaction as always. :)

    Thanks for the reaction. 👍 As others have already mentioned, Mike was pretty spot on when he mentioned something about feeling like he was back in 1967, since this song was indeed from the band's debut album from 1967 as the very first track. It was written by Syd Barrett which is probably also why you get a feeling of psychedelia... Voivod is an interesting band since they have clearly been heavily influenced by Pink Floyd (they have also covered "The Nile Song") as well as other avant-garde artists, punk and early heavy metal. Generally, they are highly regarded as one of the more experimental and innovative bands within metal. Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters/ Nirvana has been known for calling Voivod one of his favorite bands of all time. I chose this song since it's one of the most accessible songs they have recorded.

    And the kicker of it all is this is just the intro to what is arguably the best progressive metal album of all time. And the reason I say it’s the best is because it’s prog-metal without even really trying to be. These guys were a thrash band before this.

    The best version of this song (IMHO) is the Floyd’s own live recording on the Ummagumma album. I would have been more impressed with Voivod if they were singing the right lyrics, not something they thought they heard over a bad connection.

      "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving' With a Pict". The best weird song title, closely followed by Brand X and "Why Should I Lend You Mine (When You've broken Yours Off Already)?".

    Voivod, damn....... that takes me back to my youth..... this will be interesting.... I never listened that much to Voivod, I was more into Kreator, Slayer, Sepultura back then until I discovered Entombed, Dismember, Unleashed who showed me what I really liked ;-)

  • @jeannettesimpson9778

    The first track on their first album "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" 1967, six years before "Dark Side of the Moon". Syd Barret era. I'm afraid this cover doesn't cut it for me. It stays pretty true to the original and doesn't match it or bring anything new to the table. I was 13/14 when the original came out and I became a Pink Floyd fan, though not so fanatical that I can't class Nightwish's version of "High Hopes" as good, or even better, than the original.

    • @jayburdification
      @jayburdification 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I think it’s a fine rendition and it brings progressive metal to the table. Not to mention a few lyrical changes which were probably accidental. And the one they’re doing here is not the Syd one from Piper, it’s the Gilmour one from Ummagumma. Give a listen to a song or two from the rest of the Voivod album this is from, it’s called Nothingface, you might just like it.

    • @jayburdification
      @jayburdification 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and while Nightwish’s version of High Hopes is certainly more theatrical and energetic, I’d hardly say it’s better. Besides, the guitarist couldn’t hold Gilmour’s j̶o̶c̶k̶ guitar strap.

    Voivod went on to do a pretty darn good cover of "The Nile Song" on their album 'The Outer Limits' in '93.

    Love your channel! Please, react to Angra - Carolina IV. Amazing power metal song with classical and Brazilian instrumental influence. Another great song from Brazilian band: Shaman - Fairytale (if you going to do, do the official music video, not the live version).
    Both Angra and Shaman singer in those two songs is Andre Mattos, who passed away a little more than one year and a couple of months ago, amazing singer with superb range.

    My favourite band from Canada playing one of my overall favourite cover versions (I like it better than the original) which is included on one of my favourite Progressive Metal albums! Voivod always had and still have a very special unique sound (though they also released some stuff I'm not too fond of).

    Oh ! A speed metal band covering a Pink Floyd song from 1967... pretty close to the original version, I would say. I could suggest a cover version of a speed metal classic ! Try Tori Amos' rendition of Slayer's "Raining blood"... you will be surprised, what Tori Amos made out of this song ! Best wishes from Germany : Gerry

    This has always been one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. Others have given the history already, so I won't repeat it. this cover version is... meh. Kudos for trying, the result was, shall we say, less than stellar.
