Yeah, those are some large logs. I set a fire most nights in my camp area to bake bricks I made to build an oven. The embers are really beautiful. Wonderful watching the night sky and the stars.
Congrats on the new blade bud. I picked up my Silent Hero about 4-5 months ago. I opted for the smooth micarta scales because everyone who had one of the Rocky Mountain tread versions told me it fatigued their hands after many hours of work. I'm pretty sure though that after several hours of constant work even the most comfortable of knife handles will eventually fatigue the hand. The Rocky Mountain tread version is in my opinion more aesthetically pleasing than the smooth handles. Even with mine, I find the handle is much to thin . I ended up doing a basic paracord wrap around it and it feels awesome now. Anyways, it's a great knife to work with and I'm sure you'll get years of use out it and enjoy the Hell out of it. Have a good one man.
Interesting thought on the paracord wrap. I never have added or modified my handle scales...I guess it's worth a try...just to thicken them up a bit...that might make for an interesting video too...good idea...I'll check it out! Thanks for watching!!
The fire pit is huge! It's awesome...all the stones get nice and warm...I wish I could get out there more than I do...but I'm usually good for a couple fires a month.
I've owned my Silent Hero for a year now. it has become my favorite mid size knife. it slices very well and it splits good too. it took some time to get use too, but I have found that my hand gets less fatigued with using this knife for long periods of time vs some other blades. Loved your fire pit, liked your idea on the fire lay as well. good job!
Thanks! Yeah, I don't know...I REALLY want to love that blade...it's such a gorgeous overall design, but that depth of the blade in proximity to the handle just hurts. Do you use the finger choil or just the handle?
Thanks! Still a work in progress, but it's a heck of a start! The music that I use in all of my videos is from my band or bands that I have played in. That song is one that we recorded with a simple mic one night just hanging around...there are "bongos" in the background, but that was me kinda whacking on the back of an accoustic guitar. I have a bunch of music that I have posted...you can find it in my "Music" playlist. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video! Nice work with the fire. I love the silent hero. It's my favorite knife but I also use the esee 6 which is in my bug out bag. They are very similar knives and love them both. Great fire idea and I will remember the methodology you used. Keep the video's coming.
Thanks! See...I ultimately like the ESEE 6 better because of the blade depth. The Silent Hero has such a span between the choil and handle that it strains my hand funny after a while. If the blade geometry was closer to the ESEE, this would be a top 10 in my mind.
I have always been a big fan of the silent hero knife. I love the look, shape and size. I don't care for the handle at all. I think it's too thin and I like palm swell. something that folks the hand. Good video
Yes, exactly...we're in the same exact boat...love the look and quality...but the HANDLE!!!! I have actually redesigned this knife on paper a bunch of times...I have a gorgeous design that would put this blade to the top of the list...and the main change...the HANDLE!! Thanks for watching!
A couple of honest question for Tops Silent Hero owners (I own one myself). 1)Has anyone had the fine needle point come off with use and 2) has anyone done/seen a point tip test on this knife (stabbing it into wood and pulling it out/digging it out side to side? I received this knife with a needle point and at some point of use it has become more smoothed (it's still sharp enough to stab with). Additionally, I have never seen a video of the stab test where a hole is picked out of wood like I've seen with some other knives (i.e. the Cold Steel SRK, Becker BK10, etc). Helpful comments would be appreciated, thanks.
I never stabbed with it...wish I did!! I found the blade depth to bug me...a little too tall and it spanned my hand funny. Gave me fatigue! But anyhow, thanks for writing and watching!
It's the blade depth that would mess you up...not so much the rocky mountain tread, but rather the deep blade and space you need to span the handle to the choil. Overall pretty sweet though.
Yes, at the time of this video they were not available...at least at the time of my first Silent Hero video...but I don't own one any more. The blade depth bugs me...awkward geometry in my opinion. Did you get yours? How do you like it?
Haha! Nah...actually the fence is a little further off than it looks...but it was definitely a nice hot fire! That knife is solid, but I don't naturally gravitate towards it. It's beautiful, but the geometry is awkward to me. Most Tops knives look amazing, but I feel like they all have some strange flaw to them.
outer limitless lol I just started collecting fixed blades. The Silent Hero is 7 or 8 on my list to get. After pointing out the strange ergos in your video I may reconsider. One of my biggest requirements is admittedly the cosmetics. I made my first draft choice and went with the RAT 7. Love it so far! Do you have a review, or plans to review a RAT 7 or BK7 (next on the draft board). Love your perspectives. Thanks
Thanks! Well...here's my complete thought. Bottom line is you're gonna start collecting fixed blades...basically same as I did. Now this is like an EPIC journey. You hit highs and lows, great loves and disappointment. The review community can only give guidelines based upon our experience...and hopefully honest. I'm very sincere in my reviews and I try to be very careful how I present to be honest and critical when needed. I LOVE the camp knife genre. I literally watch TV with a blade in my hand...sit at the desk with one beside me...keep one or two in my night stand...I handle knives all day, every day in some capacity. So, let's be realistic. With a collection, some are heavily used...some are only for show even if you though you would have LOVED the blade, but it didn't meet your field use expectation. That's the Tops Silent Hero to me...friggin BEAUTIFUL, great lines, wonderful construction. But ERGOS get in the way for my field use. I have owned 2 silent heros...I never even cut with the first one because it felt odd in my hand. But I was so incredibly drawn to the beauty of the blade that I bought another and had to try it. I used it for this review video only...couldn't get into it. It never felt right. And that is OK if you're willing to accept that. But maybe you keep it because it's a wonderful part of a collection??
I think you need to consider if you are a collector or a user. I am a user...I have bought $300 collector blades to test and use them. Most people won't do that...but I was drawn to their shape and lines, construction, and my visual impression of how it would feel in my hand to USE it...
I am naturally drawn to the RAT 7. You made a very wise choice. When I made my first choice, it was the ESEE 6. It made my life what it is today. The RAT 7 will do that for you too. But make sure you USE it...and USE it hard...use it so hard you think you're gonna break it. You'll gain an appreciation for 1095 and a blade in that class. I will someday own the RAT 7. I look at buying one almost every week. I am watching for a very special one though...and I saw it one day and someone else bought it before I could. But you will LOVE that blade, and it will change you!!! I'm excited for you and your journey!!
That’s the whole kinda disgusting thing in trying to find that just right knife. It’s the same with everything. Boots, cars, guns. You wind up spending a few thousand dollars before you come across the one that works for you. In the meantime you started a collection and gained a lot of experience and knowledge. Hopefully others can benefit from your efforts as well. Seems like everyone has to do the same. I think it’s just fun trying different knives and gaining a nice collection of them to use at different times for different things.
outer limitless I wrote you a long detailed response to your comment, but TH-cam lost it on me. Basically I said that it's the Silent Hero that was the final straw that inspired me to build my own knife. If you haven't seen it, it's the most recent videos that I have released. Thanks for watching!
Omg... that music is far too loud and the artist is horrible. I like your vids on the different gear and knives, but, that music ruined the vid...i couldn't finish watching the vid. Just mho...btw, the silent hero is a fantastic blade.
It was only a couple minutes of music...and there is the ability to fast forward? If you think the artist is horrible, click the following link and take a listen through the whole album. Leave a comment on that video after you think it's "horrible"...deal? th-cam.com/video/8o8G5dX7_0g/w-d-xo.html

That's a great blade! I absolutely love that fire pit, if be out there all the time. Thanks for sharing brother.

I use the choil as well. Since I have large hands and fat fingers, lol, it comfortable to me for use.
Very impressive fireplace you've built there. Great review and some nice music to boot.

Thanks for watching!
silent hero is one of the best knives out there, i love mine
Such a gorgeous looking blade. I actually don't mind the sheath either...it's decent. Would be better with a dangler, but it's still solid.
The Silent Hero is my new lettuce chopper. Gives a close shave too!

great job! I probably would really like that thing, but those handles would destroy my hands lol
It's the blade depth that would mess you up...not so much the rocky mountain tread, but rather the deep blade and space you need to span the handle to the choil. Overall pretty sweet though.
Silent hero 4 with rocky mountain handles yes sir
Do you prefer the Rocky Mountain Tread? I go smooth but both are great
I think you can get a handle upgrade from Tops. They offer a different option for the handle. I get my Silent Hero today!
Yes, at the time of this video they were not available...at least at the time of my first Silent Hero video...but I don't own one any more. The blade depth bugs me...awkward geometry in my opinion. Did you get yours? How do you like it?
outer limitless-I did receive my Silent Hero but have not had a chance to use it yet. We shall see how it performs soon. Cheers!
@@heycaptjack happy with it?
That was a fun vid, thx.

Please upload more video about this knive as you can. I like to know about this silent hero performance. thanks.
I will likely show this knife in future videos...but I'm not sure. Many more blades to come though, that is for sure! Thanks for watching!
Alright, I still follow every single post from your channel. All the best
Thanks so much...I appreciate your viewership and I'm glad you're aboard!!
Nice fire scheme. Big logs = looooong, warming burn.
It really worked great! Apart from some smoke, it worked out well and was very hot!
A good way to get sick, hope you cleaned that knife before cut into that chicken, after working with the wood! Great video! TX
Oh I always clean my knives...absolutely...but did you need to see that on film? Thanks for watchin.
