Wow! There is a lot more to this ending than I originally thought. It doesn't spoon feed you a speech about how you saved Peach and that she's going to bake you a cake, but instead gives you something meaningful to think about and can be left to interpretation. I believe it's someone's view of life. How it will eventually die, but something else will be born in it's place. But it's never going to be the same as before. Video games truly have come a long way since the days of NES.
This ending (And the Game Theory about It) really made it stand out for me especially the part in the Theory that suggested that the Mario Universe re-boots itself every so often creating a new galaxy with the same basic characters and locations but slightly different each time.
It's a pretty anime-as-heck ending (in a good way) and honestly keeps Rosalina nice and mysterious, since on the one hand the storybook stuff later makes her out to have a more normal side. But here she's not so much a Princess ass some kind of space being.
I think it stands for how every playthrough of the game will be different. You'll always spend a different amount of time before beating the game, and you'll always have a new approach to every Star.

Bowser actually sounds evil, mean, an actually king of destruction. it wasn't just about stealing peach, it was about taking over the entire universe with his peach by his side. Thats badass.
So, this game has one of the most interesting endings ever. It has way more too it than I originally thought. I mean, it doesn't take a genius to tell you that you've rescued Princess Peach and will be getting a nice big portion of cake. But once the black hole forms, it suddenly gets deeper. Watching Mario and his Lady come to the realization that they're heading to their doom in a black hole, as the Comet Observatory, Bowser's Empire, and Princess Peach's castle are destroyed. The most emotional part (At least for me) was watching Mario's Luma companion sacrifice himself, along with his friends. However, this was done for a good cause : to save Mario, the Princess, and the rest of the universe. Definitely on my Top 3 favorite Video game endings list.
As an adult who grew up with the nes, snes, ps1 and ps2 through my teenage years, through now and having been blown away by Metal Gear Solid, Star Wars Knighs of the Old Republic, GTA: San Andreas, Arkham Asylum, Final Fantasy 7, and others, Super Mario Galaxy just might be the greatest game I've ever played.

The last game I beat was The Last of Us two years ago. I was really into Final Fantasy 14 for awhile, but just didn’t have time to keep up with the expansions. My son has a Switch. @@laguet93 The black hole came from Bowsers galaxy reactor collapsing, because you as Mario/Luigi defeated him, The lumas sacrificed themselves to stop the black hole, as that is one of the games' and lumas' main motives, to be reborn into stuff like stars, galaxies, launch stars and more and what could've Rosalina or the grand stars done against a blackhole. About how the other blackholes are just an inconveniance and this one being such a big deal, is a good point and i don't think it has been explained and it doesn't make that much sense. @@laguet93 That's because Bowser had the Grand Star's power fused into one galaxy for his own creation, so obviously when we took it the whole reactor that made the galaxy intact exploded which made a huge black hole because it needs the Grand Stars, the Lumas had to all go in so the black hole can stop. Rosalina was obviously sad at the end because she lost all her buddies but she knew it was great for them since they will all turn into galaxies that will benefit their own beings.

Still a more satisfying than a black hole randomly appearing for no reason I brought up the grand star in my first post because you Can Travel anywhere you want, even to the center of the cosmos with just 6 (meaning you control Space)... So what what does the 7th star do ? Time Travel. You become master of the Space Time Continum so that could've worked against the black hole (it actually takes the shape of an hourglass being flipped). As for Rosalina, she's a beautiful Space Queen Godess thing with crazy powers, she could've used the observatory to take Mario Peach and the Star away from the black hole and then use the power of the Grand Stars ? I'm sorry, i'm still upset by the fact so many kids had to kill themselves because adults didn't think this trough. It's so morbid compared to your typical Mario ending, especially if you played Smg2 before smg1, I was expecting another beautiful ending with a Giant hot Space chick congratulating me not the end of the universe

This is by far the deepest I've ever seen a Mario game go in the way of story. Rosalina has a very interesting yet sad backstory. Bowser, who usually just kidnaps Peach, actually wants to create his own galaxy in the center of the universe and he doesn't mess around in this game. And seeing those Lumas sacrifice themselves to stop the black hole followed by Rosalina explaining their cycle of life and saying that the baby stars will one day become galaxies was just the icing on the cake. Many newer Mario games, including Super Mario Galaxy 2, I feel were kinda lacking in story compared to this game and I really hope someday Nintendo goes in this direction again (maybe with Super Mario Galaxy 3, I don't know).
kondo only did comet observatory and good egg (albeit two of the best musical pieces ever composed) however, it was yokota that did the heavy work for composition, he did everything else
I miss the time Nintendo games could get sad and emotional like this with Mother 3 being one of the saddest games of all time, in a good way. Nowadays, only indies seem to be able to do it with games like Ori and the Blind Forest, Undertale or Unravel
Also, cave story the first big indie, there are a lot of heartbreaking scenes there, specially if you attemp to do the true ending or get the bad ending

I had star bits in my eyes at 1:57 when the Luma waved his goodbye at Mario and soon all the Lumas from the Comet Observatory join the apricot Luma on his suicide...This scene is so fucking sad, especially the music..Mario's shocked and devasted expression on his face made it more sadder..
Still one of the best ending sequences in the entire franchise... or heck, in all of gaming even. Mario may be the protagonist, but the Lumas were the real heroes of the story.
I literally cry like a baby every time I see those little Lumas sacrifice themselves. That scene, paired with the music… ugh. Emotions have me in a chokehold. Greatest video game ending of all time, and my number one favourite video game out of every single one I have ever played.
In a way, the games was "retconned", in the sense that everyone was revived and they were sent to a time before the Star Festival of the new universe took place, but as we can see, Bowser, Mario, and Peach at least retained memories of the previous universe/timeline, and characters like the Baby Luma/Master Luma return in the sequel as well. I guess you could chalk that up to him having been reborn since it is like, billions of years since the Big Bang initiated if they were operating under the timeframe of our universe at least.
That ending was amazing. Still my favorite Mario ending next to 64. It was very deep for a Mario game, but somehow had the sweetness to fit right in. I loved it.
The Galaxy games are by far the best in its series and it by far has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I had an amazing time playing this back when it was new on the Wii. I was only 14 when this game came out. Wonderful memories.

Everytime 2:00 and 5:17 happen I always get chills down my spine and tears of sadness (2:00) and joy (5:17). Glad I'm not the only one who cried, such a good game
I remember perfectly the feelings I had when I was 6 years old. The epicness of the scene when Mario save Peach with his star, it was surprinsingly the best scene of the end. After, it's just the hope, Bowser who is defeat, exploding to form a new shine with new galaxies. I wasn't curious at this age, more : I don't relied to Wikipedia for searching about budishm (reincarnation of lifes who can remake the universe : with the same things, different systematisation. Of the same we can make the new, that ending convey hope. Death, for the child I was, and for the inconscient - at least - of all childs, was the continuation of a new life. Harmonie is above them all : it's the Harmonie of life without chaos. She sees them for the story she tells, above them all, with her observatory. This character is sad, because she is a mother without mother, in the avenement of her lifes she has only babies. She must be mature before the age, for accomplishing her duty in a universe who didn't accomplish his duty for her : she wants to go in an eternal quest for find her place in universe. At the end of the story...
it seems its not just a new galaxy in the ending, but the universe has formed with all the galaxies we've already ventured through closer to the mushroom kingdom's world. makes me feel the galaxy is even closer together, with all the different species partying in the city.

The black hole scene was the first time I ever cried at a video game, and to this day it’s still a pain in the heart to watch. This game is a masterpiece, and it’s one of the few things I’ve played in which I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
I Definitely Agree that All those Lumas Sacrificing their Lives to Save the Galaxy is Quite Literally the Most Heartbreaking Moment in this Game..... I literally cry like a baby every time I see those little Lumas sacrifice themselves. That scene, paired with the music… ugh. Emotions have me in a chokehold. Greatest video game ending of all time, and my number one favourite video game out of every single one I have ever played.
I despise how people think the universe reset and the whole game was retconned. The lumas sacrificed themselves and saved the universe.

It's like Mario said. A new universe was created
In a way, the games was "retconned", in the sense that everyone was revived and they were sent to a time before the Star Festival of the new universe took place, but as we can see, Bowser, Mario, and Peach at least retained memories of the previous universe/timeline, and characters like the Baby Luma/Master Luma return in the sequel as well. I guess you could chalk that up to him having been reborn since it is like, billions of years since the Big Bang initiated if they were operating under the timeframe of our universe at least.

That ending was amazing. Still my favorite Mario ending next to 64. It was very deep for a Mario game, but somehow had the sweetness to fit right in. I loved it.

The Galaxy games are by far the best in its series and it by far has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I had an amazing time playing this back when it was new on the Wii. I was only 14 when this game came out. Wonderful memories.
The greatest video game of all time for sure. I remember beating this game in 2009 when I was only 4 years old. Crazy how fast time flies, because I remember this game like it was yesterday. I love this game so much, and it will always be the best and I can’t think of another game that could top it (not even odyssey)

I remember perfectly the feelings I had when I was 6 years old. The epicness of the scene when Mario save Peach with his star, it was surprinsingly the best scene of the end. After, it's just the hope, Bowser who is defeat, exploding to form a new shine with new galaxies. I wasn't curious at this age, more : I don't relied to Wikipedia for searching about budishm (reincarnation of lifes who can remake the universe : with the same things, different systematisation. Of the same we can make the new, that ending convey hope. Death, for the child I was, and for the inconscient - at least - of all childs, was the continuation of a new life. Harmonie is above them all : it's the Harmonie of life without chaos. She sees them for the story she tells, above them all, with her observatory. This character is sad, because she is a mother without mother, in the avenement of her lifes she has only babies. She must be mature before the age, for accomplishing her duty in a universe who didn't accomplish his duty for her : she wants to go in an eternal quest for find her place in universe. At the end of the story...
Definitely one of the most cinematic Mario games.

it seems its not just a new galaxy in the ending, but the universe has formed with all the galaxies we've already ventured through closer to the mushroom kingdom's world. makes me feel the galaxy is even closer together, with all the different species partying in the city.
rather than a sequel, Super mario galaxy 2 is more like the alternate story

This is the greatest Mario game ever made.
Everything about it is an absolute masterpiece. The atmosphere, the tone, the creativity, the character.
The black hole scene was the first time I ever cried at a video game, and to this day it’s still a pain in the heart to watch.
This game is a masterpiece, and it’s one of the few things I’ve played in which I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

I Definitely Agree that All those Lumas Sacrificing their Lives to Save the Galaxy is Quite Literally the Most Heartbreaking Moment in this Game.....
But Every Damn Time I hear Bowser's Theme in the Final Phase of his Fight and in this Cutscene, I'm Reminded of Just How Much Pain he can Endure, I mean, Come On.....
