This guitar lesson covers the guitar riff in Hot Rod Lincoln as played by Bill Kirchen with Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen. This was a hit in 1972.
I wanted to say after 4 days, I can play this exactly right, and I even know which fingers to use. It's especially important to use the correct fingering when moving up to the "B" part I've discovered. If I ever want to play it up to speed, that is. Practicing this has improved my playing, Great exercise for alternate picking!
I hold my pick flat against the string and not at an angle. Been playing guitar for over 20 years now. Started out playing/picking bluegrass, then dove into classical, jazz, rock, then rockabilly. Never had a problem with pick control. Thanks for the vid! HOT ROD LINCOLN!
I've always wanted to learn this lick as well as the Bonanza Theme. Thanks for sharing both of them Bruce. Someone commented on using a thumb pick and index finger which works well, but I prefer the sound of a flatpick. I play it on an acoustic, so to get close to that telecaster sound, I use a heavier pick and play the lick close to the bridge. Thanks again. You the man.
At first I could not get it exactly right, I sounded close, and almost went with that, but now I can follow you note for note in the slow part. I used to get impatient, but now I'm getting smarter and better. You HAVE to play anything RIGHT to play it fast. Even if you have it close, it's no good. It has to be right! Good lesson by the way. Thank you.
Great lesson & that is the key to learn this slowly at first so you don't even have to think about it when you're playing it then you can increase the speed as you go along that is the key to learn to play the song or any song that requires fast riffs & alternate picking is really what does it. the picking hand is often overlooked the right hand I think is more important than the left hand & if you get the picking down & the techniques more than half the battle is over & make sure to use the proper fingering very important
If you guys are baffled by this...remember you can slow it down and still be in pitch using the settings function. No need to get all huffy if this isn;t good enough maybe you should pay someone to show it to you.
WELL done! Very nice! Hey, you don't know the groovy chord that is thrown in when "that Caddy pulled over and let us by" (I know they wobble the volume control)? Great playing on here!
I think it's a A# chord played only on the 3 high strings (G-7, B-6, E-6) with a slight string bend almost into a B chord but not quite, while playing with the volume knob.
Perfect thanks dude! I knew i was missinig that lil hook with pinkie finger played twice on each chord change. What about the horn tooting guitar? Thats cool, My friend told me check this song out as i dont remember it i was to young in 72. Then i found out i couldnt dress like you, got thrown in the slammer of good ole puru, Yeah that was back in 1982
This was great when used with tabs. It's sometimes hard to see what frets you are talking about in 2d.Just can't always see around the other figures.Still huge thanks!!!
start off slow and build up speed gradually, kind of like a v12 model a with overdrive. eventually you'll be passing guitars like they were standing still.
You are stiff and mechanical -use a thumbpick and your fore finger and relax. This lick is ALL in how you play the RIGHT hand. DO NOT use a flat pick -a mistake i made for 30 years. This is all in the two fingers (thumb and forefinger).
What's by Pat Travers? The song is by Charley Ryan originally. To really give credit where it's due, Ryan's song is actually a re-make of "The Hot Rod Race" by Arkie Shibly, with different words. Hot Rod Lincoln is a response to the lyrics of the original song.
i do not get those negitive people. i have been sweating bullets over this one, thanks again

It's all there. Just click on the gear icon and choose your speed.
@642Jim Yes. A Christmas gift for my self. The price was low plus I had a $100.00 coupon. I could not resist. Happy New Year to you!

& demonstrate the rythem & picking patterns?
cool ...thanks!!!
@StephanSandiares also love my typos. ;)
Hi Bruce. Really good lesson - a great standard riff. What speed are you up to on the metronome at full speed?

Bill Kirchen is the man! Telecaster super picker.

Playing this is simple. Playing it fast and clean????....not so much
Check that B string
I kept thinking of "Reefer Madness" faster, faster, FASTER...HAAHAHAAHAHA!!!!!
the record is so damn fast lol
the more I practice the slower I get...
Why do you have a Fender strap on a Gibson???!!!!!!!
Same reason I have a Gibson strap on one of my Fenders?
Nice. Love my DOT.

WHY DO YO LESTERIE PAULIE SOUND LIKE A STELLA (ABROKE ONE AT THAT).
why not just put notes on a staff. we can't see the strings picked and can;t be sure of frets fingered
You know the old joke . . . How do you get a rock guitar play to stop playing? Put music in front of him.
ira lee Martin jr. Get some seeing glasses dude .
Ray you get lost
Moron
Who cares, matching equipment is not required to make music.
the Les Paul sounds like crap
