    One thing I always think when I see videos of places in Japan is how amazingly clean everything is and how well everything fits together, like the new building design blending with the older style and natural surroundings just seems to all fit together so incredibly well.

    I booked a ticket for Japan about 2 months ago and got back to the States today. I wanted an excursion for a few days, I decided to go to Yahiko after seeing your video. BTW, after seeing your Miyazaki video, that is going to be my next trip to Japan.
    Going in the last week of Nov, at the beginning of winter, Wed-Fri, the town was a completely different scene. Most stores closed at 2pm and many stores which said they were going to be open based upon their posted hours, weren't really observed. It's a small town on the off season, so it is what it is just like small towns in the US. Overall, still a great trip, the town is very charming.
    I really wanted to try the wappameshi at Yamaboshi, but they were closed all three days we were there. On the 3rd day, the sign flipped to closed for the day to "Preparing", but we had to leave before they opened to catch the train back to Tokyo. Yoshida had a wappmeshi too, but again, Yoshida's didn't open before I had to go and I left around 12pm, so I guess on a Friday on the off season, maybe they only open for the evening business. I tried to setup a lunch or dinner at Minoya for a full proper Kaiseki, but that didn't happen either. I had to have booked over a week in advance... the Kaiseki's start around 10,000 Yen, a head which was not an issue for me, but I was just a bit disappointed how they couldn't accommodate me as a paid staying hotel guest for dinner. I believe that ppl at the hotel for conferences had booked up the dinners even though they were not lodging there.
    don't get me wrong, I loved Yahiko, but it requires some Japanese skills and planning to get reservations and to call these these restaurants to figure out when they are open. Again, the village is charming and the woods around it are beautiful. I kind of which I had another day or two to do some proper hiking around the towns trails.
    Thank you for the great adventure Rachel and Jun!

      On the day I left, Friday, sleepy Yahiko seemed to spring back to life awaiting weekend travelers from Tokyo and Niigata. I also had lots of fun in little izakayas with locals for dinner. Learning how small town izakayas work, trying to interpret the Japanese and communication was a great experience. The Panda-yaki was great, we tried 4 out of the 5 flavors in two visits and bought snacks as well as buying local confectioneries pickles to take home.I also talked to the hotel staff and it seemed the peak tourist season had just ended, by only 2 weeks, with the local chrysanthemum festival and fall foliage concluding on the 2nd / 3rd week of November. I think for those wanting a livelier Yahiko should visit between spring and 2nd week of November.
      BTW, the train journey to get out to Yahiko was great. This is my 2nd trip to Japan and first time leaving Tokyo for a small town. The experience getting tickets, learning about seat costs+trip costs on trains, dealing with Midori no madoguchi, shinkansen, transferring, transferring and transferring again to little stations was invaluable. The train journey was also fun go through the villages of Yahagi and Nishi-Tsubame. This just gives me more confidence to go even further next time.
      Again, thank you Rachel and Jun for getting me here. Keep on making great videos.

      hello! i have a question for you! did you ever go in the hot spring? and why did you go to japan?

    • @ironqqq
      @ironqqq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Funny stuff Channel I only went to the bath in the Minoya hotel, so no hot spring. I've gone back to Japan yet another time since I made my post about the visit to Yahiko in Nov 2016. Japan is a very interesting place... just go. You will not be disappointed. I visit about 4-7 countries a year and Japan is still by far the most interesting place to visit. If you live in the US west coast like me, tickets to Japan are dirt cheap in the off season. When tickets are $500-600, how can you say no?

    I remember a while back, me and my family visited Dallas Texas for my aunts funeral. Before we left, we went to a botanical garden. There was a lake with koi, and you could feed them! I remember I lost my shoes there haha. I found them though, I also remember my mom said her great uncle(?) worked in the botanical garden and took care of the plants and everything. It was like there was a tiny piece of Japan in Dallas. And I think that’s where I started to love Japan! : ]

      hahaha on one hand it's the best because we all understand each other, like if we need to take extra time somewhere because we're doing a time lapse or if we need to "retake" shots a couple times, and everyone's fine being on camera. But when we do the exact same thing I worry about our footage being too similar, so I try to do some of my own thing a bit when we're in groups. And of course our editing styles are usually different enough that I think it's just fine. ^^

    3:11 "like Julius Caesar or something": I think that's a deliberate reference to テルマエ・ロマエ, a manga about an ancient roman bath architect that randomly time-travels to modern Japan and learns tricks of the bath trade. There's actually a chapter where he learns about using these how-to signs to help foreigners familiarize themselves with local customs. The art style and the Roman dude look like they're from that manga.

    QUESTION!!!! at 3:22 when you guys go to the outdoor onsen there are windows from the building across. They look like you could see into the onsen... And if you're supposed to be naked.... well... you get it. Did it look like you could see in from the other building?

    I love following your adventures around Japan, I hope one day I'll be able to visit but not until I can speak Japanese fluently

    • @RachelandJun
      @RachelandJun  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no need to speak Japanese fluently! :D Actually, (and this would not be for the weak of heart) the less you speak, the more you probably need to rely on communicating with strangers and getting help, which I think in the end gives you a better experience since you get to interact with people more and experience just how hospitable people are here. If you speak the language fluently you'll be able to just get around without talking to anyone at all. I think some of the best experiences I've heard people have have been when they needed help and random strangers went out of their way to make their day. :)
      EDIT: Spelled hospitable hospital
