If you watch the classic singers from the 60-80s, their live versions far out way their studio version- freedom of vocal range and less studio noise blocking their true talent.

On the set of the movie "The Bodyguard", the producers gave it to her and asked her to sing it. She had never heard it before.
Dolly's version did just OK on the country billboards earning her around 70k.

Exactly. She was one of the best singers of all time. In a time where you had to actually have talent and couldn't rely on a computer to make you sound better. So naturally, when you record a new song it's your first time singing it. As you live with it you get more comfortable with it over time and learn how to make it age like wine and get better. Many artists of today never even sound as good as their album version because the album version isn't really them.

I absolutely love Whitney Houston. She actually went to Mt. St. Dominic's Academy 3 years behind me in NJ and owned a home in Mendham, NJ where I live now. My heart aches that she is gone. I’m 58 and IMO she is by far the greatest female singer of my lifetime. Just an amazing voice!!
She was great, truly. however no one can beat Mariah Carey in her vocal's and range.

The thing is, when Whitney sing this you look at it as no big deal, easy peasy. but when you see other singers trying to sing it and they cant sing it even close to how she does, then it hits you, Whitney is on another level.
True.. Today's talent is talent-less! Not like it use to be right up to the 90's.. Nowadays, an artist promotes before an LP comes out with a scandal to get the buzz going. Clearly they don't trust themselves with just their work alone. Everyone sounds similar, it's pretty much the same old rubbish IMO!

And also yes they dont trust themselves thats why the male singers need to have naked women dancing around them to sell. Glad im born in the 80s, when artists didint need nudity or scandal to record or sell a god damn album, and most of all when the lyrics had a meaning. +Aaron Thompson Mariah's wouldn't be able to access her head voice considering she uses mostly falsetto. Also in the climax of the song, her mid belts would not be as rich and resonant as Whitney's powerful, full voice. Plus Whitney's vibrato is more prominent than Mariah's. Mariah is good, but I don't think this song is structured for her voice, well at least in the sense that it would outdo Whitney's version. But same can be said vice versa. I wouldn't be expecting Whitney to be able to sing Vision of Love like Mariah.

i just came from watching dolly parton singing this and i LOVE the difference between the way they both sing it. Dolly sings it in a way that seems like she's already moved on from it, setting the boundaries almost as if she's writing a letter after coming to full acceptance of the situation. Whitney sings it in a way where it seems she's coming to that conclusion on the spot, the cut is still fresh and it's a difficult parting in the moment. both versions are passionate but coming from different places in their hearts. This song is beautiful and anyone could make it sound amazing if it's being sang from their own personal experience or feelings on the message.
