When I was getting my Masters in Ed., I did research on home schooled kids vs public ed. There is NO basis in reality that they are less socialized than public ed kids. They are actually better adapted to socializing with all ages and adults.

Love the way you answered the age old socialization question for homeschooling!
I homeschooled my 6 kids and received that one often.
Adult family members-moms, yes; DADS, grandparents etc… are to raise up the children .
Good examples of having babies grow up within their family ultimately growing into functioning young adults - begin with observing their parents and other family grown ups and how they interact within and outside the home .
That in itself is a valuable key element to confidence and security .
Do not allow TV to raise your children.
    Video games are useless .
Confidence and security begin in the home and kids learn by watching and helping.
Tossing kids into a mesh of peers their own age and expecting the strong to survive is a very broken system.
My kids were always able to socialize across the age groups and were so much more mature than the examples of kids who were raised in the public school system. It worked well for us.. and I can see you guys know the joy and value of having your family know their worth and get to it!!❤

I would add tray bakes to your big 3 of soups, salads, and stir fries. Everything and anything can go into a tray bake, and it can be seasoned to any cuisine you're in the mood for. You can't get any easier than tossing food on a baking tray, season it, and roast.

The caveat for that would be that the amount you can make is limited by the size of your oven. For a small to medium-size family this can work, but at some point you hit the limit of how many you can feed.

When you were talking about homeschooling and socializing, to me the most important thing you said was ‘it’s the parents’ responsibility.’ Too many of us seem to have forgotten that. We blame it on the music they listen to or the people they are around or TV. Well, who lets them do that? The parents. Thank you so much for pointing out that vital fact!

Joy Louise it took guts for them to put it back into the parents laps! In our crazy society it’s really hard to speak truth, even kindly, for fear of someone getting offended.

Wow, that is a good way to socialise - up and down the age ladder and different levels of acquaintance. You're right, schools limit the social interaction of the different age groups, limiting this to lunch times only. And as parents, you are teaching your children social skills. Kids don't hear us talking like they used to, especially with phone and computer use. In Australia, they make the children perform speeches in front of the class but teach them to learn and communicate with computers - very contradictory.
Eating seasonally is eating with the most nutrition, it really is the best way. I have a huge amount of respect for you both, you are living the dream and are the inspiration for me here in Australia.

New subscriber from over in Cheltenham in England, we don’t have the property to do any homesteading but I love watching it and getting and tweaking any tips to fit with my life. I have 2 children an 18yo son and 12yo daughter so we can’t clothes swap how you do but it’s a great idea. Totally agree buying second hand clothes. They may not be new but they’re new to us. There’s only a few things that make my heart happy and they’re my husband, children, pets, and hugs, so having extra hugs from the children and coffee (which I love) would definitely make my day better. Lots of love and hugs from my family to yours xx

Your discussion of school vs parenting reminded me of a time when my own boy was in public kindergarten and the teacher took me aside one day when I went to pick him up. She said she had been handing out cookies, and when my son's friend took one and didn't thank her, my boy spoke to his friend very matter-of-factly and asked, "what do you say?" It absolutely is a matter of not only parenting deliberately but presenting an example. Kids learn an enormous amount, not from what we tell them, but from what they see and hear us do. Nice job, Josh & Carolyn!

Such great advice! As I have never eaten primarily from a garden, and originally being from southern California, I have never eaten seasonally, and have never understood how to do so. I'm working on creating an amazing garden and really want to be able to eat from it, I worry about wasting all the effort it took to grow the food by letting it go to waste. Great video, thank you so much for taking the time to make it :-)

The only socialization problem we've had with homeschooling is having to limit it so we can actually get school done! My kids are well-socialized and have entered into the work force with great relationships and connections with a wide variety of folks and it has only benefited them in adulthood. Our daughter was able to find an apartment in our area where they are in short supply because of who she knew and had a relationship with. That's just one example of how knowing how to talk and interact with others and establish relationships outside your home and family benefits them. And they, in turn, have blessed other families, too!

You cut a larger zucchini in half inch wedges, then cover with a light coating of oil before lightly bbq or grilling both sides! Then load with items you like on your pizza , starting with pizza sauce and ending with cheese! Place back on bbq till cheese melts! Kids love them and can be made for individuals likes! Another great & informative video. Love your channel. Always learn something. My parents used to spend all summer in their travel trailer as camp hosts in a national forest. When they were packing up & cleaning up to go home, mother would always clean out the refrigerator & would make Must Go Soup. Anything that must go out of the refrigerator went into the soup. When I was single, I would often have a little left over vegetables that wasn’t really enough for another meal. I kept a container in my freezer & would just dump those veggies in there. I used that assortment of veggies when I made soup. It gave me a nice variety of veggies in my soup. Keep up the great work! Love & Hugs from Ft. Worth, Texas.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on homeschooling and the school-system!
In my country it's virtually impossible to homeschool because it's not allowed, except for when there is no school-system of your choice near by. Of course there are always several schools of different 'taste' (learning-system, belief-system) in the neighbourhood, in our dense populated country, so virtually nobody is homeschooling their kids. We tried too, but couldn't get permission.
I often regret that, and tell people that our kids got some mental en personal 'scars' from the school-system, and that if we had the opportunity to homeschool, that we didn't have those problems. Even with their learning problems, since they are all highly intelligent, but suffer from things like dyslexia or high sensitivity, and those things are not a problem at home, but they are problems in the school-system.
Luckily they learn fast and recovered pretty good, but it could have been much more easy and with less pain.
Ah well, they (and we) got the strength to go on and grow ;)
    Blessings from The Netherlands

I couldn't agree more, regarding socialization. When my kids were in public school, they weren't as good at socializing with other age groups. Or even IN their age group. It was an odd structure that doesn't match real life. Now that they are homeschooled, they speak and interact with adults, younger and older kids, with greater ease. I think you are right, this is not an education issue, this is a parenting issue.

I dehydrate my zucchini and we eat them as chips. Mmmmm! Plain is great but can be seasoned to taste. Seasoned or not, put the extra in an air tight jar. The hardest part of zucchini is finding and picking it before they resemble the size of Noah’s ark. The “arks” can be cut as ‘pasta’. I use my spiral slicer, use or dehydrate the big ‘uns! Wonderful substitute for pasta.

I would love to see a "week of meal planning" video from you guys. Something where you show your process of collecting your harvest and planning the meal based on what you have. I love getting creative with what we have on hand, but I struggle to plan too far ahead of the next day. Usually I just plan tomorrow's meals based on what we harvested today, unless I can freeze it or otherwise store it for later.

Great video and info about meal planning. I so agree on giving children a variety of social interactions. My children went to a Private school but unlike other parents, I always took them with me when I went on my sport outings (I played on a national and international level) and I still have those friends and they are from all walks of life and my children met doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs etc on a weekly basis. My daughter always says that through my sport friends, they met the most amazing people, with or without children. Your own social interaction is a good example to them. I have only recently started a veggie garden in my small urban garden and are eagerly waiting for my cold weather veggies to get ready for harvest, my first ever Fall garden and my meal planning goes around what I have in the garden and what I can get in season at my local greengrocer. We have an amazing company one can order through on a weekly basis and they get meat, dairy and vegetables from local Farmers at a really good price and you go and collect at your closest hub. Then there is always the weekly Farmer's Market. Even if you cannot supply all your good food, there are always options open to get what you need from good, organic suppliers without costing an arm and a leg

Zucchini is delicious in Indian recipes. It soaks up the flavours of North Indian curries and is also very good in South Indian dishes (like Sambhar, Avial and Mor kuzhambu). My favourite is mor kuzhambu, a mildly flavoured curry made with fermented yogurt and clear vegetables.

Well said and very true, unfortunately. I home schooled my 4 children for 19 years. They were all very social always. I agree with Caroline.. parents need to be social and teach it. Teaching life skills was more important to me than busy work in books. My children, now adults are very successful. One was a surgical tech, now a welder. Two are RN's. One has his own logging business. All now have gardens, and can food. Knowing how important our own food is.

We have a pretty massive stigma on homeschool in Australia too, i really want to homeschool my babies because our education system is starting to crack under the weight of poor decisions from the government, but my husband worries about them not being socialised properly. Im going to make him watch this and hopefully it will help. I want more for my babies than what they can get stuck in a classroom, they learn zero life skills in school here, i need to show him that homeschool doesnt mean they will become unsociable adults that dont know how to communicate 😞

It's really how the school is or how the parents are. My school was not so good and even with me moving schools a couple times I was(and still am, but getting a lot better) very antisocial. But there are some people who I know we're homeschooled and they were put in sports and day care to get social skills and they are a lot more social then I am.

@babybee we homeschool too, and here in the US, there are numerous homeschool groups. These are groups of like minded homeschoolers who get together to do various activities, such as: band, sports, academic classes, picnics, camping, field trips, etc. Homeschoolers not being socialized is just not true. There is plenty of opportunities to socialize. I’m sure that there are these same homeschool groups there in Australia. Good luck and God bless.

Speaking from the position of 'empty-nesters', my husband and I could not agree more with y'll about parents needing to raise and socialize their kids. We have many families, in our life, that are homeschooling or have, in the past. The kids from these families are so smart; I learn something from them just about every time I am around one of the families. Which brings an echo to what you were saying about your children being able to talk to anyone of any age. I learn from our friends because we (they at various ages and us as adults) have conversations; the kids are never intimidated to speak to us or ask a question or contribute information. The parents have been very intentional about a wide range of studies, field trip and travel opportunities, some families have joined home school networks, became involved in their churches or participated in the arts, and some have pretty much stayed around home. Of all the kids we know (which is quite a few), that have been schooled by their parents, I can think of maybe one young man who was not as outgoing as the rest. I think they call that a quieter personality. One last thought and I will jump off my 'soapbox'. We also have a lot of friends who work in education. It is heartbreaking to hear the stories, trials, issues these people encounter as they, literally, find themselves raising their students. Kids just so want to be loved and paid attention to by their parents and so many 'adults' (using the term loosely) are so focused on themselves, their technology, their newest partner or a job the kids are just getting left in the dust. So sad. We really appreciate all you two are doing to raise educated, healthy, well-rounded future adults. I have a feeling people like that may be in short supply in the future.

Also homeschooling is wonderful. I'm so happy my now adult son won't even date anyone not wanting to homeschool future children with him. Most people will never understand. I quit trying to explain our choice. It's what we felt we were to do and it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks and it doesn't matter what they about your choice either. You have a beautiful family ❤️.

Thanks for the great meal planning tips! I feel your pain with seasonal clothing exchange!! It literally takes me a full week. Then there’s always more I find after washing....so I end up with several small bags a week later that I have to move to storage. Ugh! It it feels great to be finished though.

btw, I never eat "leftovers." I eat food I've "made ahead." I know it's semantics but when people say their family/kids/husband won't eat "leftovers" all I can think is, "I don't either." I eat food I've made ahead, and trust me, when I was still in the workforce working two jobs, pretty much EVERYthing I ate had to be made ahead on those rare evenings or half-day on a weekend when I had the time.

I'm curious about how you continue these kind of fresh meals through the winter. Canned fruits and veggies, as well as root veggies are great, but I find I miss the "fresh" foods. Do you freeze vegetables for winter stir fries? Have you been able to continue growing greens or herbs like cilantro in the greenhouse through the winter? Thanks!

Social skills are taught at home, which actually makes me wonder how my kids do so well socially because I feel like a social alien so much. I was public schooled, but they've always been home schooled. I'm awkward, but they are friends with everyone pretty quick.

I do you raised beds 8’ x 4’ and I filled two of them one with zucchini and one with summer squash. I am feeding four different families with them though but I’m really excited to have it now (because they are GMO in the store here and I will not buy any zucchini or summer squash) but by the end of the season can’t give that stuff away. But if you have some really good zucchini recipes when they start coming in. I never learn anything other than zucchini bread and stewed with tomatoes from the garden peppers and a little onions and some cheese if we have it

Velocity The running Sloth aka Sloth Mom
My favorite way to eat zucchini is using them small, about 6 inches long.
Slice each into 4 FLAT pieces lengthwise.
Lay individually on parchment paper on baking sheet.
      Brush on olive oil.
Sprinkle grated parmesan cheese on top.
Bake at 350° or higher til golden on top.
It's fast and easy and delicious.

I always answer the "socialization" question with the fact that I get to CHOOSE who they socialize with instead of just throwing them into a pack of kids bound only by age! Church groups, 4H, visiting nursing homes, and working with people with disabilities are much better than just sitting in second grade! If anything, homeschooled kids are TOO comfortable with adults! If you're under thirty, you're their age!

Quick question. Where is your pantry located? Downstairs, main level? When we add onto our home, I want a main level food storage room. So I was just wondering to see if you have extra insulation around it, etc. Dislike having to go up and down stairs with glass jars, etc.

They are always excited for zucchini bread...but not stewed or stir-fried zucchini :) One thing you didn't answer is do you write out a plan for the week/month? I understand that you have a class of meal for each day and use that as a guide...but do you have a written plan that you make? If so I would love to see it happen.

    • @HomesteadingFamily

on main, no off grid for power yet, have our own water. Our approach has been to build and standardize food production and storage first, which we are getting down pretty good, then to alternative power. Hopefully in the next 3 years.
