I’ve never bought an animal without housing but last winter my horses were freaking out about the barn. Me thinking nothing of it and walking in to find a domestic white duck in the corner. How he got there nobody knows, but he has found a forever home with shelter now! 😂🦆

Just have to say before I even start watching it has been such a joy and encouragement to see your faces every week and listen to your experience. Thank you so much for doing this. If I could afford your class just to support you I would. I used to make cheese for our local raw milk dairy farm but it would be very interesting to see how you're doing it on a home scale.

Awesome timing for this! We'll be looking at buying 20+ acres in a few years. Our goals are to become debt free first (car and school loans) and then use the house we have to sell to use against a larger mortgage (house plus lots of land) and only have that as our debt. But we'll both be working full time. My dream is to quit my job but it may take quite a number of years lol

I always assumed that "finger-TIP" tight meant you didn't use the palm of your hand at all. Just your finger tips. I only use my finger tips and have always had good success. IN fact, when I take my jars out, often the lids are completely loose and the jar still seals.

    • @lisakukla459
      @lisakukla459 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, same here. I was taught to put the ring on one-handed, and tighten until the jar begins to turn, then give it just a tiny nudge beyond that point. That will give you a sense of what the correct tightness feels like.
Now I just tighten until I feel resistance. Good seals every time!
The ring is only meant to keep the lid from becoming misaligned or falling off; It's not meant to assist with sealing.

You only grow 1 variety of that particular species (scientific names are important here) & let the fruit get 100% mature (way more than you would for eating) or the seeds wont be viable.
Make sure its originally an open pollinated variety.

Being in Southern California I can get ripe tomatoes from the garden in February but I don't get much in the summer. I treat summer down here sort of like others treat winter - things in the garden die back and you only go outside for short bits of time if you have to. We're currently looking at moving and buying land hopefully in the next month or two.

I've made some soft cheese but would love to learn how to do hard cheeses at home. Someday! Love your videos and the fact that what you share is often very relevant to me--I also live in Idaho. We have some microclimates in our area but I believe I'm in Zone 5a. Also short growing season, something like 90 days. All the best to you~

Our barn was not ready when our kids got their market lambs for 4-H. We set up a temporary pen in our attached garage. While we would be eating dinner, we would hear the lambs crying. When we would open the garage door (in our kitchen) we would see them looking at us. They lived in the garage for about one month.

I had no interest in dairy as I assumed you need unpasteurized! But if I can use store bought for cheese, butter, and sour cream. That’s awesome. Now to find time. My corn and almost all summer crops died. But now I have corn growing in the rocks! I’m going to plant some more and try for a fall harvest. Here in Az it’s definitely warm enough. I found a short growing type I’m going to try. I ended up with a little volunteer pepper I’m going to pot it and try to winter it inside.

Garden turnover, soil, animal feed, gas, etc etc. it’s hard to price this stuff out and plan up front as you recommended without more context around average spend and if sometimes you have to drop something you started 🙏🏼 more of your personal story if that makes sense!

But living on the 1.3 in the mountains, so very hilly lots of cliffs is not a lot when you want to homestead. (The land was an inheritance from someone who just wanted to live in the woods away from people.)
It just shows how people don't pay attention.

How deep do you till deep and/or shallow? Is 8 feet is deep and 4 feet is shallow? Also, when you till you mentioned 1 a year; is there a certain time of year you should till your property? Oh an should it be tilled in sections? Say, you have 40 acres but you use 1 acre for planting, 2 acres for your animals? How when should those areas be tilled?
I have many questions but I want to know too, is it best to have sheep, lama’s or goat to use to keep grass from growing too high?

Me and my husband have plans to immigrate (back) to the states from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 and settle in Oklahoma,he is originally from there I never traveled anywhere further then Austria 🇦🇹
we have 2 kids both from a different marriage I have always wanted to move to the states and be self sufficient so I have been teaching my self the skills needed as much as I can cause I know that most of the work is gonna fall on me and I am more then ok with that (I I’m 35 my husband is 52).
This past year I have started our “plan” what veggies We want what kind of livestock how much we need of each when to plant what and how, when to get what kind of live stock and what kind of machinery we are gonna need/want in the long run I even budgeted out insemination costs for the specific breed of cow I want (Dutch belted) etc.
I am no where near done with the plan but it gives us an idea of how things will go in broad strokes (we all know how well thought out plans tend to go 😂) we hope to move within the next 4 years. So we still have a good chunk of time to fine tune and do some more reading and learning.

No you aren't alone with the livestock buys. I figured out that if I had only Nubians (at the time) I could add to the herd and because they looking the same I could add new goats. And it would take quite awhile for him to notice it . Then it was "when did that new goat get here"? Me "which new goat?" Unfortunately after I integrated LaMancha's to the herd that was not an option. Lol

I am wondering how you can still pay your bills if you are working fulltime on the farm. You need to have some form of income especially if you've got a mortgage. Everything you guys do is incredible expensive, for example If I would like to have a few hundred jars to store food in it will cost me a few hundred. If I'm working in the garden I don't have that. So can I finance such a way of living?

The cart before the horse, that's how I ended up driving cross country back to our property with a frigging goat chilling in a hammock in the back window of my camper 🤣

@@twochickenshomestead9836 we took a trip to Florida to visit my husband's grandparents and while there, my husband helped their neighbor with some farm work. They raised goats, and we had talked about getting goats when we got back home..... but my husband thought it would be OK 'if he just got one baby goat now, to be his 'lil buddy'. So we have a huge bay window that covers the back of our RV and he put a freaking cat hammock hanging across the window 'so his lil buddy could relax and sight see' on the 34 hour drive home. And that is how it happened, I've never been honked at so much lol.

Be prepared before getting livestock very good and particle advice. But unfortunately I'm terrible about this. I'm Absolutely pathological about it:) Conversation in our home "Hay honey I just found this flock of sheep for sale on craigslist. It's a great deal we really shouldn't let it go!" Never mind we have no fencing, shelter, anything set up for sheep and it's the middle of winter in Maine!! Horses, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, we even had our KIDS before having a room for them 🤣 Just watch our episode on DIY's show building off the Grid. Maine Mountain Home. Good advice, Love the info, keep it up.

We are getting a late start but we JUST had an offer accepted on a log home with 10 acres with a huge barn and Amish built chicken coop. My husband is retiring. We are moving from California to Ohio. We had 12 kids, we'll be married 30 years in November. I wish we'd done it sooner but we trust God's timing. It will be total paid for and then some, no debt at all. We wouldn't have been able to do that at any other time. Our youngest 4 are coming with and some of the older ones may come back. Who knows. This will be the greatest adventure of our lives. I'm devouring the homestead videos! Thank you so much!
