I like, "The Pantry Chat." Isn't that the end goal? Feeding your family? The Pantry Chat, is the perfect culmination of what homesteading & your lifestyle, is all about.

This is quite possibly the best discussion EVER regarding homestead time management!!! I will have to relisten several times to digest completely. Very balanced and realistic. We jumped in full fledged, knowing fully that we were taking on too much and knowing that we would hit a period of overwhelm. The idea was that the learning curve would be shortened. We have now hit the point of overwhelm and are re-evaluating our systems. We are still fully committed, but have to remember we decided to jump in that way and the short learning curve was bound to have and did have consequences (overwhelm, etc.). Now that we are able to look at the systems, and lack thereof, that contributed to the overwhelm or that helped us decide if an endeavour was worthwhile or not, we can hopefully make some good decisions. One thing I love, that I think you guys mentioned, was that there is an endless amount of learning involved. It is never, ever boring, this lifestyle. Every day brings a new challenge and a new learning opportunity and I just adore the heck out of it!! Thank you so very much for sharing your tips, and I look forward very much to the next chat!

I am definitely in sync with you on organization first. There are soooo many things I want to do, but I know that I need to tackle one project at a time, prioritizing what's the best choice to start with. I do alot of researching too instead of moving blindly forward. I find that once I master a project, it becomes a well-oiled machine which allows me to start the next project. You are very encouraging and stabilizing for me. ThanQ.

Pantry Chat is lovely, we have snow in Alaska, garden planning is my top priority. You are so correct that everytime we wanted to eat we had to make meals, sometimes just running to the garden but othertimes we wished we had more one meal cans prepared. Corned beef hash was our favorite :)
Really incredible advice, relationships and our mental health are a part of our overall wellbeing. You two are wonderful, seriously a wealth of information in this chat.

Paused the video and had to say the following:
New subscriber here. Sincere request: how did you become so good at this? From skimming your videos, you guys seem to be pretty science-y and numbers-whiz-y as far as health benefits of certain food items and the costs are concerned.
Surely city youngsters absolutely CANNOT do what you do without going through an extensive learning process. And older rural folk while being pretty good with their homesteading skills, aren't as science and math savvy as you guys.
And you guys don't even have a rural accent. That means you did grow up in non-rural regions. So how did you guys manage to be well-versed in non-rural knowledge *and* outstanding homesteading skills? This is amazing. It's like you guys are operating on a higher level that we mere plebs are yet to get to.
Also, look at you two - constantly looking at each other *and* at the camera - who taught you such heart-melting loving behavior towards spouses. Your love towards each other and your grounded attitude just makes the knowledge that your provide in your videos a sheer delight.
Massive respect to both of you. Now, I'll watch the rest of the video. :)

It’s minus 5 F here in Manitoba. I am working on my seed order and test germinating seeds left over from last year to be sure they are good. Dreaming of starting plants as our last frost date is the end of May, to soon to start seedlings. We are 62 & 72 yrs of age and we are search for a person, couple or family that want to live on our farm for the summer in exchange for them helping with our projects. We take a afternoon and evening every week to spend with each other, no chores, no jobs. We calf share with our cow, so we only milk when we need milk. It works really well in the winter when we are at minus 30F and don’t want to be outside to long. 💖

This is so interesting. Good point to plan like making soap just once a year. That way you can put away the project and bring it out just once a year. I like the name "Pantry Chat". It's perfect. You guys are great. You complement each other perfectly. That makes the family and life work great.

Well, I do have a husband who helps me tremendously, but he has just developed some very restrictive health issues and I am still raring to go. I hold back sometimes, just because I feel like my enthusiasm to go go go causes him to feel insecure in his new limited role. I hope to never make him feel as if he is less than he ever was as a person, but reality has limited his former capacity to do the heavy lifting. So, NorthStar, you and I are kind of in the same boat. I will do all I can this year, and I will be glad for anything that does manifest itself. Hang in there.

I do many of these things with no help and I see it as more of a therapeutic exercise than a ‘survival’ one. One thing I do is prioritize ME and my time. I don’t ever commit to any activity outside my home...if they aren’t paying me,then they they aren’t valuing me ether. I’ve been asked to do LOTS at church & school etc by people who are being run off their feet and as much as I feel sorry for them, they made those choices and didn’t say no.
So my advice, learn to say no.

I guess I am very interested in how can I make a small garden when I can’t plant anything in the ground? I live in an apartment but would just love to grow some basic things like tomatoes, pepper, onions, maybe some lettuces etc. but what equipment is available to give me the ability to do that?

    • @SimpleLivingAlaska
      @SimpleLivingAlaska 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Karen Kingrey, not sure if this is helpful but I knew someone that planted veggies on her apartment patio like peas so she could trellis them, you can do this with tomatoes too :) Lettuce can be planted close together and harvested in a cut and come again fashion if you have the room for a container. There is some pretty cool vertical gardening stuff online .

One of the most important things in my career as a Systems Analyst was a skill I learned as an office manager. The age old saying - "if you have any problems or questions, just ask". It was a lesson. When training someone, regardless of the task, those who are learning often don't know they are having a problem and thus don't often ask. Some tasks are a progressive learning process, so begin with the fundamentals and then bit by bit introduce the next steps.
I witnessed many managers expecting fully skilled functioning from new trainees that was impossible when the task was unfamiliar or the trainee had legacy skills that deviated from the assigned task. First time round, new trainees only catch 25% of the information. So, patience is of utmost importance and expecting mistakes should be a given in the beginning.
We all only have 24 hours in a day. Time management can be better explained as activity management and focus on important vs urgent unless important becomes urgent. Never lose sight of important because of urgent.

I so understand the "gotta" syndrome! I'm 71 and handicapped..(wheelchair). I want to do so many things before I'm too old to do them! LOLOL My dh calls it my "gotta" list! But I did just manage to put up my first jams....blueberries/strawberries. I also canned 3 pints of ground turkey with success! I'm so proud of my self! I have a container garden on my front porch which probably drives my dh crazy. He's an A personality...I'm a "Z" personality! (artsy/and also ADD). What he must put up with. However, he will love the veggies when they start to ripen. I have blooms on tomatoes/summer squash/cucumbers/peppers/sage/peppermint/spearmint/chocolate mint/pineapple mint/oregano/lemon balm/lemon grass/mosquito plant/and some others I can't think of. I also got 5 new butterfly bushes planted (dh did that) and then there are my 10 chickens. DH has 2 acres of yard he takes care of and we have a boxer. The rest of our family is grown and dealing with their own families. I also paint and knit and where have i put my "baseline"? LOLOLOL

I have about 68 skills on my wishlist. Some will drop or moved to a familymember. Starting my proces backward you best have some knowledge for preserving your food before expanding you garden.

Oh my gosh!! I think you guys are in my head! I write things down (always a list! I even have a list of lists I need!). Seriously, though, my father taught me this because that way there's something to cross off everyday. So you can always look and see what you accomplished each day. Rigidity is an enemy though. So, agree with that point. My father's way of thinking only worked when I could actually cross things off and not beat myself for not achieving. Of course, he was also the one who told me to "always have a plan 'B'. So, I always had an out if I wasn't able to achieve my planned goals for the day. Priorities are absolutely necessary. Every day.

I'm listening to the replay. You brought up the dairy cow. That is a great thing to barter with. I am considering creating a local homestead coop. Meaning... if this family manages a couple dairy or goat milkers, another family manages a MEAN garden, and another family manages fruit trees, another manages the honey bees, etc.

Did you think about the good quality vertilizer you get with a cow..... good luck with that choice!!! cows ar sooooo smart and nice, but it will only give milk if you get it pregnant (english?) every other year at least! you need to think about all the calves and what you are going to do with them... If you slaughter them you can even make your own cheese... but are you committed to do that?

Super discussion and I so agree with everything and myself has gone through a steep learning curve this last year. Always remember you are never too old to learn something new and do not be afraid to swap/barter skills, I will teach you this if you teach me that. It is a sign of strength, not weakness to admit you do not know how to do something and can you help or better, teach me. I find the younger generation half so few skills compared to whet we were taught and I am guilty as well, not teaching my kids as many skills as I should have. Being a single mom and breadwinner, it was not easy to find the time for that, but now as they are adults, I can teach them still when they ask

Ruby Moorman They take the rings off after they can that way if a lid did not seal or comes unsealed they can tell easer. The ring can help give a false seal by holding the lid down. I hope that helped.😁

@@Tammy-cu3nk That helped a lot, thank you, but this is not what I actually meant, blushing... On the top shelf, "right behind you Penny is jars that looks as "IF" they don't have any inner lids on them at all, just must be the way the light is hitting them... Hugs

It's true what they say, "you can eat an Elephant, but you've got to take small bites" 🤣
Gardening is exactly the same. Never try to clear/dig a large patch of ground. You'll break your back, become discouraged with lack of progress, and then quit. Dividing it in 4 works. Just clear 1/4 and get it planted with easy, quick growing veg. Once it's growing, clear a second 1/4 and plant potatoes, which are great at weed suppression. Look after this for the year, and cover the other 1/2, and leave till Autumn. This will kill weeds, and it will be ready for digging/soil improving before Winter.
The advantage of dividing in 4, is that it's the base for good crop rotation.

Great video! I agree 100% with everything you guys said. We're 13 years into this homesteading endeavour, but have added things on very gradually. We started with a garden and chickens. A few years later we added goats, a few years after that, pigs and last year a milk cow and her calf. We both work outside the home, so the overwhelm is really getting up there after adding the cows! We're trying to work our budget so that I can stay home and homeschool our three year old.
I do have a question for a future video: FEED costs. We purchase organic feed and at this point are spending on average close to $500/mo. Our milk cow is not from grazing genetics and does need grain to maintain body condition. Hoping to AI her with genetics that can help us work more towards being mostly grass fed. I would love to hear any tips you guys have discovered on reducing feed costs for your livestock! We pasture raise our pigs, but they still require quite a bit of grain. Definitely looking to learn more about pasture improvement, growing crops to offset feed costs, etc.

I have been celebrating having a 2 day weekend often I have no day weekends with my job. This is how I have managed my time today Saturday. Started coffee, filled wood burner ( that's our main heat) started oven to warm canning jars and turned on tea kettle and canner. Got everything out of fridge that was prepared last night and raw packed soup to can. Took coffee break while letting canner steam. Then fed ducks, chickens and rabbits and collected eggs. Started laundry and dishwasher and then started carting in firewood. While listening to your time saving video. Started my day at 6:30 it is 10:30 now will be leaving to pick up feed once laundry is in dryer and canner is off and loosing pressure so I can can more when I get back. Thanks so much for all you share with us.

Hello, from NSW Australia. I am new to your TH-cam channel, and have been enjoying it so much. I'm working my way through old video's that interest me. It is mid summer here, and a very dry and hot one at that, it's all I can do at the moment to keep my small veggie garden and fruit tree's alive. I live in a subtropical climate, and we can grow food seasonally all year round, so we are very lucky in that respect, I think for that reason we tend to can a lot less in Australia. I make things like pickles, chutneys and jams when I have surplus produce, otherwise it is simply eaten fresh. I'm loving this series, and I really like the name 'Pantry Chat. ' I look forward to seeing what each new episode brings. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with us all.
    Cheers Cheryl

I think "Pantry Chat" is the perfect name for this, even if you have your garden in the back ground during summer it still applies because that will be going in the pantry as well lol
