The Honda Civic, one of the global motor industry's most enduring model lines, has moved on. It's no longer built in Swindon. And mainstream versions of this eleventh generation version no longer use a conventional engine, instead adopting a 2.0-litre e:HEV full-Hybrid petrol powerplant. There's been a return to the more mature look of earlier generation Civic designs too; gone are the slashes and fake vents of the old MK10 model. Instead, the replacement liftback 5-door hatch design adopts a more conservative, but still sophisticated look.
This car completes the shift of Honda's entire model line to e:HEV Hybrid technology. Well, almost the entire model line anyway. The company, thankfully, couldn't quite bring itself to abandon the Civic Type-R hot hatch, so that continues with an evolved version of the previous model's 316bhp 2.0-litre turbo powertrain. But the Civic e:HEV is our focus here. Take a look before you sign up for the Toyota Corolla it's directly aimed at.

Best review I ve seen of this eHEV. I ordered mine without testdrive in Juni last year. The Elegance in Sonic Grey. Honday said I have to wait till Feb 23. But in October I had a call: come and get your car!. I can confirm this is the best Civic ever , I have driven 6 different Civics. And Fuel economy is just awesome. 4.5 liters/100km. Engine is quiet. Yeah, I m happy with my new eHEV!

@@RedXcz Well first of all in the past i use to have an integra type R, so i know what fast driving is here on the autobahns. I commute a lot between 2 cities 28 kms apart, so city, autobahn, Most of the autobahns are 130 kmh now, then 4 kms of country road and average fuel eco is between 3.9 and 5.7. in the winter a bit more because of the heater and so on. If you push the start button the engine starts working right away, but lets say when the temperature is above 15 centigrades in the beginning its only the EV mode.

Great detailed review, I've booked a test drive next week. Looking to move from 15 years of Audi A3 Sline Stronic models, whose current internal design is awful (too much touch screen rubbish, and cheapo plastics on the dash with ridiculously designed pointt edges) for my liking. Thanks Honda for a proper drivers car as opposed to an SUV (whatever the point of them is?)

What a brilliant review on this vehicle. Very thorough covering all salient angles buyers usually identify. This car has really grown on me even though I'm leaning more towards the type r for its exhilarating performance and fun. I'm at an age where I know the eHEV is a more mature and smarter purchase, but the type r is just a special car that I know I'll be more proud of owning. Only problem is the 20 month wait in Australia as opposed to a 9 month wait for this vehicle. Both are different cars even though there are many similarities. If only I could combine the panoramic sunroof, heated seats/steering and electric seat adjusters to the type r, then it would be the perfect car. I wish the eHEV had more power even though it's the most powerful in its class

I am in USA and was cross-shopping with Mazda3, Toyota Prius, Nissan Sentra, etc. Ended up with the 11th Honda Civic. We don't have e:HEV here (yet) in USA, so mine is 1.5T Sport Touring Trim (Hatchback).
Totally love the car, I can't believe I love it this much. Driving becomes fun and I want to drive every day again, not mundane anymore. The driving/handling is great, fun, and its space is best in class (come on, this is almost CUV/Accord/Camry size now).
Styling is subjective but it's a simple timeless design, not fancy futuristic. The more you look at it, the more you like, it's a design that you can use for 10+ years and doesn't feel old or boring. You can be 40+ years old, drive your kids to school, and it doesn't feel weird.
The Interior is nice, simple, decluttered, easy to use, and is not overly complicated/styling. Visibility is also great. It has real knobs, buttons, and little touch or haptic feedback (only the touch screen). It's just my pleasure to drive.
If the 2024 e:HEV Civic (US version) has all features (big sunroof, rear air vent, lumbar seat, etc), I am gonna trade-in and upgrade to e:HEV.

I've had my Civic Sport in Premium Crystal Blue for 3 and a half months and covered nearly 10000 miles. I'm very happy with it and over that, I've saved ~160L of petrol compared to my KIA Cee'd JD 1.6GDI. Great fun when you throw it around corners (as I've experienced on some twisty roads where I live).

If all goes to plan this will replace my current Jazz when the PCP finishes in a couple of years time and I'm genuinely looking forward to it. The hybrid in the Jazz is absolutely superb, regularly giving me back mid 60's even with the current weather encouraging use of every heating element Honda squeezed in. Careful driving and more civilized climate conditions get that up to 70mpg and on one week when I was curious what it could really do the at the pump figure worked out just over 80! Moving to what's effectively the next generation of the hybrid tech along with something a little more suited to my 100 mile round trip commute should be a decent switch and hopefully keep going long enough into the electric revolution for the initial problems to be ironed out. Got to say though I'm not sure white is its best colour. Have seen a couple of blue models out in the wilds of south east England and that definitely suits the design.
That being said the *original* plan was to go for the Type R as one last dino-guzzling hurrah... but even if I could stretch to the absurd price Honda have slapped on the windscreen you're into super hot hatch territory which, sadly, makes the Civic very difficult to justify.

Fairly accurate explanation for HEV system, except that current doesn't always go through battery as it would relatively quickly kill it. Current from a generator (1st, bigger electric motor, powers wheels and 2nd is a generator which produces current for electric motor and has nothing to do with wheels itself) goes directly to electric motor and only when needed extra current can go from battery as well. Small, but important difference. Another thing- whole idea of the system is based around fact that petrol engine operates close to its optimal efficiency and about never leaves it. This is why car is driven by electric motor most of the time (and petrol engine is disconnected from the wheels and can operate 'steadily' powering generator) and only in special cases (steady drive at around 70-150km/h) by petrol engine. Recuperation is very efficient as well as energy goes directly to big electric motor without any gearbox. Center of the energy flow monitor tells you if system switches to petrol only mode (gear icon appears).

    • @Erikootje
      @Erikootje ปีที่แล้ว

      nice summary!
but a question: so the current that has been made by the petrol engine (as a generator) goes most of the time directly to the electric motor(s) instead of going to the battery?
Because in the Honda product videos for this car you see that they show yellow lines going from the petrol engine to the battery, and from the battery green lines going to the electric motor driving the front wheels, suggesting that the petrol engine act as a generator that provides current that goes into the battery....
what you say is basically that the battery has a little role in this all? So why did Honda show it that way in their videos?
Maybe because its hard to visualize a petrol engine making current that goes directly into the electric engine, because all those major components are under the hood...and adding a battery that sits under the rear seats, makes it easier to visualize?
      thx!

    • @SOMEONE-ME
      @SOMEONE-ME ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Erikootje Maybe graphic is bit misleading. When you listen to Honda engineer (there is very detailed Honda's video on YT explaining how system works) he clearly says that current goes directly to electric motor (and if needed to charge battery). If you had to put all current through battery all the time then it would die relatively quickly
Battery serves just a role of a buffer so stores or gives energy when needed. Such a small battery (around 1kWh) would not have enough "ability" to constantly give high current. It's rather way weaker battery than one in full electric car.
Search for "Ko Yamamoto". There is also 2nd video which is about changes made in Civic (compared to Jazz). Civic has the latest version of the HEV system.

Had the car for about 5 months now and done 6000 miles, mpg average was about 60 but dropped to 48 when it was below 3 degrees, basically still averaging about 56.
The best thing about the car is the ride and handling, sticks to the road, feels like its on rails, fast acceleration and absorbs road bumps. Really pusts a smile on your face when you drive it, especially on twisty roads and roundabouts it just soaks them up, funny watching SUV's in front of you swaying like a wagon going around roundabouts while you feel like you are on a stright road.
Tech is really good, comfy inside, plenty of room for non-SUV, brilliant view and seating position, all-round amazing car. Oh and it looks really nice in blue, especially when you never see any others on the road. :)

Black mark against the new Civic is its poor performance in the Euro NCAP crash tests. In the front offset crash test the protection to the driver’s torso is rated as WEAK & both shins are rated as MARGINAL. No way this car should have been awarded 5 Stars overall. My 19 reg Honda Civic Type R performs better, although my car is rated as WEAK for a rear seat passenger. Honda need to improve performance of seat belts in crash tests. The IHS crash test in USA also comments about poor performance of the Civic's driver’s seat belt. The Toyota Corolla, made in UK, performs better in Euro NCAP tests & has space to fit a space saver spare wheel. Warranty for Corolla is ten years if kept serviced by a Toyota main dealer. Toyota Touring Sport 2.0 is a better alternative to the current Hybrid Honda Civic. Another benefit the Corolla engine has over that in the Civic is the use of dual fuel injection i.e. port & direct. In Hybrid cars the stop start function cannot be turned off so the engine in the Corolla is unlikely to suffer carbon build up on the inlet valves.

DO YOU THINK I'LL EVER BUY A G.M. CAR ???!!!!......
((( NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!! )))
I WOULD ONLY CONSIDER DRIVING A GM CAR IF THEY GAVE IT TO ME FREE & GOT MY SAAB BACK ON THE ROAD TOO....WITH AN APOLOGY NOTE ATTACHED TO THE WINDSHEILD, A BOX OF MY FAVORITE CHOCOLATS, ,
& A BIG BOUQUET OF FLOWERS!!!!
G.M'S LOSS!!!!.....MY SAAB DEALER (IMAINE USA) USED TO GRIN WHEN I SHOWED UP FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE.....'CAUSE HE SAID HE GOT ABOUT $500.00 WORTH OF ADVERTISEMENT EVERY TIME I SHOWED UP IN THE CITY & TOOLED AROUND WITH MY RED TURBO SAAB CONVERTIBLE ..... "5 ON THE FLOOR" MANUAL STICK SHIFT N' CLUTCH PEDAL... TOP DOWN...TUNES FROM "MY DECADES" CRANKED....AND BLONDE HAIR FLYING!!!! MA'AN I LOVED DRIVING THAT CAR!!!
THE NEXT CAR I BUY MIGHT JUST BE THE LAST CAR OF MY LIFE THAT I PURCHASE....MY NEXT CAR MIGHT EVEN BE THIS HONDA..... I WILL STILL DREAM OF DRIVING MY RED SAAB CONVERTIBLE AGAIN.....
((( BUT I'LL BE DAMNED IF I EVER BUY A G.M. CAR AGAIN!!! UP YOURS GM !!!!! )))
I DO STILL HARBOR HOPES OF GETTING THE SAAB ON THE ROAD AGAIN SOMEDAY.....BUT THE CHANCES SEEM PRETTY DIM. 😔
IN THE MEANTIME..... I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING DOZENS OF VEHICLES BEING PRODUCED TODAY..... AND THANKS TO YOUR FABULOUSLY WELL-CONSIDERED & VERY COGENT REVIEW.... THIS HONDS VEHICLE IS DEFINITELY GOING TO BE A CONTENDER.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS REVIEW@!!
