I’ve been painting grooved cedar shingles on plywood on top of saw horses. Primer on all sides, then final color on top and sides. Roller and brush. Let dry to the touch and transfer to tarps on the driveway for rest of drying. A spray gun would save a lot of time. The angled jig and painting the sides while in the bundles are real time savers.
In a way yes. We didn't have a place to paint them.. especially since it's oil based and you don't want anything sticking to it. I suppose you could paint then in your attic.. so long as it's well ventilated. The smell is very strong.
Any homeowner who asks for paint to be applied to cedar shingles is a fool. You will regret it. Just go with stain. Don't be stupid. Paint on cedar is just not with the trouble and mess in the long run. You're also screwing over whomever buys this house in the future if you paint those shingles.

Those canadians sure know thier cedars...aye?💪
You need to do both sides so the shingles don't cup. If the back side gets wet they'll cup over time. That's why both sides get sealed.
Nah……..you don’t need to paint both sides. A properly nailed shingle won’t cup
Awesome! Thank you!!
Your dad is hella smart. This is a great set of techniques! Would you modify anything for rough grain cedar? That's what I have on my house.
How about semi- transparent stain color?
is the 45 deg. groove setup for saving space? I have plenty of room in the attic and thinking just to lay them on the floor on 6 mil plastic.
