      Yeah, well, 50++ took a toll anyway. Ended up with a raging case of ITBS in my left leg afterward. Took almost two years to heal completely. Wasn't long after that I badly broke that same knee from a fallen tree snapping in my direction when I cut through it with a chain saw. That was just over 3 years ago. Sheared the lateral tibial plateau right off. Was on the operating table over 3 hours while they put humpty dumpty together again. Have a steel strap screwed to my tibia for a souvenir. Aging sucks!

    The “water damn” is from the attic not being vented. Too much warm air is leaking into the attic from inside the house and since it’s not venting it causing the snow to melt, but then the water moves down the shingles and gets to the bottom edge of the roof where the eves are and there’s no more heat cause that section isn’t over a room in the house and the water freezes causing a faking effect

    I've done several repairs for customers and myself over the years on shingles and have found that if you just take a Skil saw and cut 1/4" to 3/8" deep along the bottom edge of the shingle that your working on, clean the edges and then shingle up to it and nail the new shingles with 4 penny nails, putty them and put a good coat of oil base primer on, you'll be just fine. No need to go thru all the hassel
    of under-cutting the shingles and nail removing. Your gonna have exposed nails somewhere anyway, so why bother with removing the old rusted nails. I've got jobs I did 20 years ago and they're just fine.

      @@zerolabs the way your doing it is 'correct' but if properly sealed (water seal, oil base paint etc;) it'll work just as
      well. Another option is to slide a small piece of galvanized flashing under the row of shingles above the one your
      replacing and nail your shingles in place below it. Again , it's very important to seal the exposed wood with either
      a stain or oil base primer. Remember Zero, sometimes it's impractical and costlier to do it the way your doing it here. Either the customer's budget is tight or the house is such a 'train wreck' that it's just not worth the time and
      energy to do it the 'This Old House' way. Cheers, keep up the good work and remember what Sinatra said: 'I Did

      @spactick ปีที่แล้ว

      @@XenaTheQuadCamBikah ya, if you properly seal all the exposed wood and caulk all the seams with silicone caulking it should
      be fine. And if you wanna be thorough you might tuck some aluminum flashing under the shingles above the ones

    There's nothing correct about any of this work unfortunately. Nice guy but he doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to wood shingle siding repairs. By tweaking, twisting and cracking the shingles he has compromised the integrity of the shingles above. He would have been better off to just rip off the entire section, repair the damaged sheathing and install new shingles. If would be faster and have a much better result that will last a lot longer.
    If you do want to remove and replace lower shingles you don't use a slate ripper that he's using, you would use a long nail saw. It's large blade similar to a hacksaw with a long handle and you actually saw the nails off along the face of the sheathing so the surface is smooth allowing you to install new shingles without running into the old nails left behind after you break all the rust nail heads off. Maybe I should do a video, but that would cut into my roof repair time.

    • @TheStoneWhisperer
      @TheStoneWhisperer 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, looked for that supposed "nail saw", none of the big 2 box chains or Harbor Freight or Amazon has anything longer than about 9". I'm not an expert, but most of the shingles are longer and you need at least 12-14" in length to get far enough up in there to grab a nail. On top of that, since it's super common to have the bottom row of a wall butting up against a dormer roof line or the ground, there is no room to get a 14-18" nail saw under that first row because you have the roof of a dormer or the ground to tend with. Not sure what the solution is, but I'm running into same issue.

    • @bobbarker9986
      @bobbarker9986 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@TheStoneWhisperer So I just dug out my Shingle nail saw and the blade looks just like a big hack saw blade that measures 17" long and 1" wide. It might also be a little thicker gauge. That blade has 2 rivets that connect to a piece of steel slightly thicker but still able to go behind the shingles. The total length of reach is 24" behind the shingles. Then that is connected to a long wood handle. the overall length is 49" so you can really push and pull on it.
      It would not work on a shingle that is sitting on a dormer obviously but it will work on the next course of shingles on an angle and then you replace as many courses as you need to. A professional would never try to take out a bottom shingle sitting on a dormer because there is no way to lower it to remove it, you have to start higher then remove the bottom course. It only takes a couple minutes to replace a small area. I'm sure I didn't get it at a big box store since they weren't around 40 years ago. I'm sure I got it at a roof supply somewhere. Good luck.

      Yeah, I know. None of the house has gutters because the overhangs are two feet from the siding. Splash zone doesn't reach. This addition also has a large overhang but, as you point out, the slope of the outer wall puts it into the splash zone. Not worried about it too much, though. I'll be long dead and gone before this will need replacing again. It'll be someone else's problem. LOL! As for basement, entire house is on a slab. No concern there either.
