    Finally, first time seeing Brandon cast net! Yes!!! thumbs up!! :D By the way, try to hook the live bait without any leads or weights. The live bait will swim on its own. One more thing, your friend Chip can't even load the cast net correctly. He needs to re-learn it. The handline should be on the same side as you wrap your hands on the horn of the net. Also, another note, he doesn't need to pick up each line from the lead line. Since it's a 4ft cast net, he can simply pick up one of the lead line and throw. I threw a 14 ft cast net and lead weights about 26 lbs. It took more a while to master it. I used the Triple load method without teeth and pancakes all the time. Well, the Triple load method only applies to 8ft - 14 ft net, but you can use it for 6 ft, but it isn't necessary. Nice video man!

    Ive caught some 150+ lb tarpon on bigger mullet but I never use mullet on a bottom rig off the beaches down here in south Florida. We live line them keeping the rod in your hand with the bail/spool open. It allows them to swim more naturally. Snook and tarpon are common along with jack crevalle but in the intercoastal redfish and trout are common as well. I never go over 30lb fluoro unless I'm going for big snook and tarpon. Good luck!

    Awesome , the student have become the teacher
    Forgot to add , next time bring an ultra light combo and small hooks and just toss it like 20 yards out and it’ll be fun catching smaller fish left and right .
    (Faster actions , compare to waiting a long time for one big fish )

    I usually use live mullet whenever I fish at sebastian inlet. I just free line them and put a splitshot weight on and with that rig at Sebatian, man, you can catch Snook and redfish like crazy.

    I fish here in Australia with live bait sometimes. I'm curious, why you don't set the hook, before you start furiously reeling in. It's not a race. That way too, if the hook doesn't set, you leave it where it is, and the fish can have another crack. Also, surf fishing, the undertow can double, sometimes triple your fish weight. You need to keep the tension on, when getting into the shallows, but just reel when the waves are coming in, rather than fight the tide. You'll land twice as many. Now I want to go fishing. :)

    • @svang55
      @svang55 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a circle hook. U just reel instead of setting the hook. I do agree that he should feel the fish first then reel set the hook

    Yo skipper.ive been using finger mullet since I was 10-11ish. that gas first row is what you would call a banana. No big deal it happens. Yours was nice. I’ll tell you my style for my stomping grounds. More details below. When the mullet are really running, so thick you could nearly walk on them, catch them and cull out the big ones. It sounds odd but in my experience the smaller the better. The ones that nearly squeeze through The net. Smaller than the one you put on at the beginning of the video. I wear a medium size glove and I would say about the size of my ring finger is perfect. Also the wind is best out of the west. If it starts blowing out of the east have a seat and grab a cold one. I don’t know why exactly but the east wind turns them completely off. them I mean flounder. That’s what I enjoye Fished with my father too. Bought 2 adjoining lots on Topsail island NC.and built a nice simple little cottage in 73.back then there weren’t very many nice homes.a lot of 2nd row beach fishing shacks (& I don’t mean that in a bad way.real deal fishermen with nice little places ,built down behind the dunes .perfect to sleep ,eat fish & rinse off now & then...what else do you need..right?.?!? right.)if you haven’t been there ,go.its a great spot with above average fishing for the area to this day. other smaller family type beaches(or as close as you can get these days)south and north are good too.but too far south & the slope of the beach is more gradual ( some exeseptions) and the consistency of the sand is much different ...muddy/silty.a lot more experimentation & less catching.. you know the deal.pay attention,shift gears & adapt.

    • @wbwills2
      @wbwills2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry hit the wrong button. I’ll try and stay on point here. 7 1/2-8 ft M action St. Croix inland surf fishing rod and a fin nor reel or penn. Personally prefer something along the lines of a 2000 series small reel. Old school original streen 6 lb Around 12 lb maybe a little higher mono 16 inch leader.kahle hook. Above that a good quality swivel and as little barrel weight as conditions will allow. Occasionally I have used a sand spike for a larger rod and fishfinder rig but with The way I do it,two rods is one too many. I walk with it. If there’s not enough current to bump The minnow along through that first trough sometimes the second & all the holes and sloughs you’ve marked from low tide . Just walk with it. Out catch every one on the beach 10 to 1. On flounder. About even Steven on the redfish and trout. Beware ...with that technique you tend to get quite a long distance from the bucket. Carry a freezer Ziploc with three or four minnows and freshen the water up every now and then.

  • @wbwills2
    @wbwills2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok. Back to the mullet and the net. The best tip about finger mullet I can suggest is late in the season when the minnows are nearly gone and the ones that are close enough to throw at are going really fast and it’s just a few of them. You want a 3 foot maybe 3 1/2 net. Special order it. Smaller mesh it catches the wind just right and you can sling it into the face of a wave(with practice) and snatch a small pod of three or four minnows right out of that wave. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to do but you’re going to catch at least four fish with those four minnows. I could go on and on. You’re the best on TH-cam. I’m living vicariously through you at the moment. Hope to see you on the beach one day. My mind is racing a little right now I’m feeling a Touch envious and that doesn’t feel good so signing off. I’ll get some sand between my toes soon. Get back with me if you want any more details and I’ll try not to be so long-winded. It’s pretty easy stuff it’s just A lot for me to write and a lot for you to read. I wouldn’t mind doing it but you’ve got so much to read that it might be in vain. Nature of the TH-cam beast. Keep on keeping on and hello to pops. I know you do & will but keep loving them while you got them.

    • @wbwills2
      @wbwills2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Skipper, also ,this being 1st time using live mullet was a little odd .as much as you fish.You do know flounder take them in head 1st to avoid getting spiked by dorsal fin + they scale them in their throats before swallowing.easier to digest I suppose.?.when you miss one u know because they are scaled as neatly as you could do with a filet knife tip.think other species do the same to some extent but not as meticulously as a flat fish.

    I catch big fish the same way but with a longer leader trace so the mullet stays off the bottom and has space to swim... about 1 meter should do the trick. I use a grapple sinker that slides on my main line with a swivel and then another swivel of the same size before the leader trace to stop the sinker. Hope this helps!

  • @rengatto2747
    @rengatto2747 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Skipper, love your enthusiasm, I would be tilting the rod holders forward a bit so you can set the sinker better and have a bit of a curve on the rod tip, that way you will see the rod standing up if you get a fish that takes the bait and swims into shore (gummy shark a.k.a smooth hound). Another tip would be is not to pick up the rod and crank as soon as you see the bite on the rod, doing this in most cases you're either pulling the bait out of the fishes mouth or increasing the tension on an unhooked fish causing a bite off. Give the fish time to take the whole bait and the circle hook will do the work and you should end up with more dramatic rod buckles and a better hook up rate and more runs to film on the sharks. Overall great videos, easy to watch and you seem to get on fish, tight lines from downunder.

    Put half a blue crab on there if you want a drum
    Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not saying drum won't hit mullet, but if you are trying to target that species on the Florida coast and you're catching everything else, go with crab. If you're in Tampa Bay or along the central Gulf coast, use a stone crab claw. If you're on the atlantic side, use a blue You can stand on the jetty in Ponce Inlet and watch reds suckin' crabs off of the surface as they swim along in the current. Or throw a line out under the coutney campbell and drag in a 50 pound log fulla worms. There ya go, good luck!

    3m tiger off of Fraser Island ..... let the fish run with the bait for a bit, set the drag properly and you’ll 100% set the hook when something’s on

    here on the west coast what i have always done, was to use 30lbs fireline with a 200 plus pound rated steel cable leader about 2 feet long from sevenstrand. this is what i use to keep sharks from biting through my line

    I know exactly where you were at. I fish those rocks at Nassau Sound almost every Wednesday. I caught a 42 inch red there, a month ago, on cut mullet. Those small blacktip sharks are great eating, btw!

    Hook choice and hook tying is the most important factor in any fishing rig....it determines hookset ....I’ve always used the snell when tying any hook.. it presents the hook gap at an optimum angle..at 8:25 I can see how the hook is tied and results of this is lost fish during fight and opened hooks.... try testing this theory out yourself in a side by side fishing comparison... u will never go back ... like your vids 👍🏼
