There's so many factors that come into play. I've been doing heelflips from the kickflip position and I do have switch up positions according to the shoes I'm wearing. Those Ishod shoes do have a lot of meat in the heel flip area, diffrent story for Vans. Also the size of your feet and board have a lot to do with your position. I do feel this position is best though.
I think it's pretty easy how there's also a different timing involved with a different foot position. When you have way more foot on the board, you can flick pretty late and still catch enough of the board. If you have your foot hanging off by a lot, you kind of have to flick earlier or you will miss the board. But it probably should flip easier when you do catch the board with the flick. I actually do not think the board size matters at all for this. I mean, ultimately people do like double and triple flips on very big boards too and it all comes down to technique and timing for the most part, along with simply jumping high enough.
Yo I actually figured this out a few months ago from watching neen williams do heelflips. It is a little harder for me to do them consistently like that though because my hops arent as good as they were when I was a youngin, but you get waaaaaayyyy more lift with this foot position and it does bone out like you said. Its the perfect ninja flick heelflip, you just gotta lift those knees up hella high and commit. Great content as always man 👏🏼
i got told a similar foot position the other week and it has helped my heelflips feel WAYYY more natural. its kind of a cross between this and a neen foot placement where your foot is angled like ishod but your toes are right near the edge of your board not hanging over. honestly was a game changer for heelflips
this is how i taught myself to position my feet, made it so much easier and gave all my heel flips tons of pop and had perfect rotations everytime. a lil harder to land still fhan my kickflips, but way cleaner every single time
I want to see a video where you work on Switch heel for an hour straight until you land a few of them. You got this man! Its time for that switch heel or nollie heel video we've all been waiting for. Push yourself local.
I think you're right about this foot position. I love Ishod's skating and he's a pro for a reason. He will have done many heelflips in many ways and found the best one for him.
My little trick to them lately is I turn my back foot(or front foot for nollie) outward almost pointing straight towards the tip of the kicktail, and I position my flicking foot sort of like Ishod does, but hanging less of it off the board. Prior to this adjustment I couldn’t get my nollie heels around all the way, and if I did I couldn’t keep it under me.
All the tricks from the last video worked for me (open shoulders and pointed toe etc ) and now my heelflips are becoming more effortless like my kickflips 👌 thanks for the breakdown 🤙👊
No lie i love your videos so i watch em and its honestly funny seeing people do what i do on the regular for heelflips good looks on breaking it down to a science ,this is sick.
Been trying to get back into skating, man. Heelflip was my first flip trick. And I had them pretty good. For me, I remember flicking fast (with the hell) and then sucking up my legs as high as they could go and it would flip while travelling up and then trying to catch it and stomp it down. They still come out after a long time, but not like a monster heelflip. Also landing like that can probably hurt you if you’re jumping down something. I like that you keep analyzing the same trick but different methods. That’s the only real way we learn tricks. I remember liking white leather shoes so I can see the different variations of flicks on the griptape every time and I could adjust. I knew these mexican brothers who moved here to south florida and one of them went to my school and had a broken leg when I met him, and one day I deleted a footy of the younger brother fs flipping a 4stair because he kept calling me fatass, and one day I went over and their dad told me to never talk to them again as the little blonde haired brother smirked. So instead of trying to ollie big shit I hung out outside my grampa’s house hungry trying to lose weight and practicing kickflips and heelflips for hours everyday and everynight. I don’t think if I ever showed them. But that wasn’t the point at all. I was a kid having fun the best way I could find how. I remember a lot of those guys learned new tricks and forgot old ones, so I clung to my kickflips and heelflips. And slo-mo’d my favorite ones to study them also.
I always thought that was just how they were done? I didn't realize people did it with the foot totally perpendicular. Having it at an angle like that help a lot with frontside heels too.
heelflips is one of the few tricks I can catch on a good day , when I do them good I I just keep the feeling in my hamstrings like im sitting basically after popping keep that tension in the hamstrings with the knees bent and they re almost picture perfect for me catch and all.
This will be easy for Ishod because he's built the muscle memory for that foot position. If you try this and you have a different foot position, switching to this position will be harder, not easier. If you can do heelflips all you have to do is keep practicing them to get them better. The thing that makes Ishod's heels so good is because he's put in the hours to be great at them. If you do the same then you will have nice heelflips too.
my heelflips (when I land them, unfortunately not 100% consistent yet) are very high and I can catch them very high by orienting the foot as you said and using almost only the pinky toe Orienting the foot like you show and getting the front foot more in the middle (toes on the board) are what allow this
So what’s crazy is, I thought that’s what Foy and Neen did with there’s. So when I watched your vid on there’s I did that and my goodness my heel flips got WAY better haha I think it for sure is the trick
definitely depends on your hips and shoulders too, if you angle it but your hips and shoulders are square , it don't really work. I have naturally open hips / duck feet so the ishod way makes sense for me
Do you think you would have gotten this good at skating without making TH-cam vids? The warmup sesh was impressive as hell. Gonna try to ishad foot placement tomorrow. Have a nice Friday.
I was just noticing how much better he’s gotten since he started publishing. It def helps having outside motivation to go to the park and work on your tricks. Also always trying to work on new tricks- I often find myself doing tricks I’m comfortable with and only occasionally pushing to learn something new. Very motivational to see the real work going into good skating, not just pros making insane shit look like a breeze.
@Local Joe. Excellent video but it always feels like you're trying to force us to watch your daily session. Why not have 2 different video format? 1 for analysis and thoughts about skate things (I love the way u do that). The 2nd for every day skate sessions and show your progression. Anyway your point just blowed my mind! I was thinking stupidly heelflip means flick with the heal. Thank u so much!
I’ve got a strange set up for heelflips. My foot is even more angled than Ishod’s but my foot is 2-3 inches below the bolts and dead center of the board. Pop is super duper bc of it. Now that I think about it…My foot placement is most peoples kickflip position. I just flick to the other corner.
the truth about heelflips is your heel doesn't flip the board. Your toe does. Its just called a heelflip. So Joe, your is analysis is correct. Its really just a kickflip on the opposite side of the board.
I think you’re rocket heel problem is that you flick a little early. It’s my most consistent trick and rolling the foot (ishod style) more does help to bone them out because you kick through the board better.
Of course the way you’ve been doing it would “score” better than a different way you haven’t practiced. Kind of nullifies the point of it The takeaway is that my foot placement is more or less the same. I just need more practice
Tbh there’s no real hack for any trick to duplicate a pros style. Every person moves differently and has different proportions such as foot size / leg length / height / weight ect plus board setups. Just cuz you copy there foot stance or flick doesn’t mean your gonna get it like them. Just do the tricks where you feel comfortable standing or flicking and evolve it. Real talk some people just can’t do some tricks no matter how hard they try. It has to do with different body shapes and motion as I said. Yah just work with what you got and make the best of it. I just don’t do some tricks or have any desire to try them as they just don’t feel natural. That’s my 2 cents! Don’t get stressed on a trick if it ain’t working but don’t think copying a pros style will solve it either.
Armchair advice. Just focusing on increasing pop would improve every trick by 100. Ur technical but seems like u need to flip as fast as possible to compensate for doing the tricks low. Not a bash or dig. Just observation
Your skate sessions should be based on the trick you're hacking my dude!! Its kind of irrelevant to be doing any other tricks than the specified trick hack in the title of video.
@@linkser9739 I never lost my kickflips, but my heelflips...I lose them every month hahaha. There are some days I can heelflip almost every try, the next day it's like I never did them before hahahahaha

That´s the main reason for me. Vulcanized, thin heel width totally messes with my heelflip. Wider ones are much better.
