    Your honestly the only TH-camr that explains things in a way that I can understand it. You really pay attention to the details. Other people just say "pop and flick". Great video

    Skated for 10 years, now it's been about 10 years since I was skating everyday. Never really had kickflips on lock like other tricks, but I watched this and honestly landed one of the highest and cleanliest kickflips I've ever done. Solid advice.

    I find that when I tuck my knees I'm able to delay the flick without thinking about it. More tuck = later flick

      True they go hand in hand!

      This is the missing tip from Joe's video! I'm still perfecting kickflips and my problem when I pop higher is the board often does a half flip then sucks to my back foot because I'm not tucking my feet up enough. If you watch a lot of these pro kickflips you notice their backfoot is just barely high enough for the board to complete the flip. There's a lot of focus on the front knee/front foot in this video but tucking up that back foot is reallllly important

    • @DarmokAtTanagra
      @DarmokAtTanagra ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL practicing but I still get half-flips. The more I tuck and delay the flick the more my flick timing goes to sh*t

    I learned kickflips in 1989 on a very flat, heavy board. I was taught by a freestyle skater, so flicking down and fast was the way... It took a long time to slowly adapt to the concave of newer boards and pulling the flick up higher. But I have to say that if I had your knowledge and ability to break these down to the detailed techniques, my kickflip would have been sooooooo goood. Long story short, I wish I had a Local Joe helping me out back then. Good work, man.

    This is the holy grail of tutorials for kick flips. I have been battling to get my kickflips to level out like this. When i try to level them out i either whiff the flick entirely or i somehow end up way ahead of my board. When I’m on carpet or stationary i can do them but in motion it just wasn’t happening. Thanks for this video. It was the final brain connector I needed to practice this more!

    These tips are awesome! The way you explained Malto’s flick really illustrates a big point - that the technique is going to be different depending on each person. I think we all want to find a one size fit all secret, when it really depends on how you individually figure out how to do it.
    One important thing I think might be helpful to add is that a good kickflip continues traveling upward after the flick as it flips and hits its peak when you catch it.

  • @donovanhays

    This isn't just a good tutorial on how to make your kickflips better, it's the missing piece in most "how to kick flip" videos. This timing can be hard to figure out on your because I was doing the exact same thing of trying to pop and flick at the same time instead of focusing on popping but keeping the board under your hip for a moment and then kicking out for the flick. Not saying you're going to get it right away obviously lol but it does give you something to think about when you're trying to get the timing down. When I teach people how to ollie I have them do a very similar thing. I tell them to focus on the pop and getting the board up and not to worry about their front foot. It's nice to break tricks down into smaller pieces that you can work on and then put together.

    YOOO this video came at the *perfect* time for me. I’ve been battling to figure out the kickflip since July, and watching every tutorial, and working hard at it most days, and I finally landed three rolling kickflips over the past week … but still felt like I just did *not* have it figured out. BUT, the advice here to let the nose come up higher and closer under my hip really unlocked something for me. I just landed 5 kickflips in today’s session! Thank you, Joe!

    Notice also that people also are pulling their whole board backside with the flick, and then they aim all the way back across the board for the catch. Also remember you gotta be back a little, then moving forward, then pop, as you are moving forward, so you are bringing the board with you. That is essential to really kickflip

  • @trevorbaird3827
    @trevorbaird3827 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is the most clear explanation I’ve ever seen. Well done man. An important addendum is that it seems to me that the way one switch flips and regular flips can be completely different. This is due to balance and flexibility differences between your legs. When I kickflip goofy, my right foot is more centered and close to the front bolts and I flick closer to that center line you talked about. When I switch flip, it’s more like Nyjah where more of the heel hangs off and the left foot is about one and a half inches behind the bolts because I’m more interested in completing the rotation and less worried about height. If I try to reverse forms, it doesn’t work so well. The arms also seem to be a big factor. Think about when you’re trying to touch the backboard of a basketball hoop or jump onto a high box. The arms swing forward and up in a completely different way. Paul’s kickflip is an interesting study in how when one looks down from the chin with slightly hunched shoulders, you can almost see his arms flying backwards in relation to his shoulders. But since he’s craning downward they fly upwards in relation to his lower body and board and pull his body up in a different way.

    Hi Joe, your video is very interesting, bravo, but I think you don't talk enough about the importance of the ankle for the flick: it's the ankle that makes the flick, the height of the kickflip will depend on the height your knee, and your back leg, but not the flick... In a theory, if I just want to do a "little" kickflip, I don't need the attack zone but on the other hand my ankle ... Thank you ++

    • @localjoe
      @localjoe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah I agree. The flick is so fickle if you only focus on the ankle and it's a feeling thing. I think if you do the 4 ingredients you'll be in a position to flick however you want fast slow or in between. There are somethings that are so subtle I'm not sure I'd be able to explain it well.

    I think the real reason is that pro get PAID to skateboard. I would personally find that very motivating.

    amusing that you used that clip of Rodney Mullen as an example of doing kickflips badly :-)

    I trying kickflip for 3 months but still cant land both feet
    i can land only with my front foot
    not only kickflip but also heelflip landed with only front foot
    Am i just scare of landing both feet or idk why.
    Why I jump flick and then my back foot is on the ground already
    Sorry for my bad english

      You aren’t letting the kickflip happen under you you’re trying to watch it in front of you. Get the nose under your front hip before you flick and you’ll be on your way

    Really what makes skating so hard is you’re having to learn micro second movements with your whole body and all 4 limbs doing different sh*t

    My board just stays glued to my foot and shoots off to the side where I tried to flick it.. looks like a solid Ollie
    But no matter how hard I “flick” my ankle or leg my board won’t get tf off my foot.. sorry but it’s frustrating

      it's cause you're flicking it like a dolphin flip. also you've got way too much weight and friction behind your flick. The flick should be nothing more than a weightless and subtle "brush". Check Luan's 14:19
