"its way easier to create a model in a modeling program and add some FX using a computer and make them move on the screen, rather than create a physical model from scratch and move it and the camera around" Not, it isnt... It allows more detail, cleaner working, reusability and less space and money on the materials... however its not, by any mean, easier... also CGI requires much more work and experience to achieve great results, while its much easier to get experience and achieve good results modeling a fisical object...
Old fashion beats the crap out of modern day cg effects... my respect and a really big applause for those who made these films!! May the force be with them!
KevinKent, Olav Jakobsen... All the newer big budget movies with 200 million dollar budgets have credits that roll for 30 minutes. There's hundreds of people involved.
George Lucas was extremely wise to surround himself with such talent! These guys are the "forefathers" of special effects and truly revolutionized film making. :D
Actually special film effects got started in the early 1900's, with short films such as A Trip to the Moon (1912). Much later in the 50's Ray Harryhausen brought his unique style of effects of which many of the SW effects people thank many times over. Star Wars is a culmination of all these SPFX techniques learned from decades past.
So true!!! They thought it was gonna be a flop and prepared for disaster but little did they know they created a masterpiece, a game changer in movie making, and special effects!!! And the special effects have survived the test of time and has held up well over the years!!! That my friends is talent!!!
well why would you do it so slowly today wheb you can get same results in a fraction of a time. it only needs some thinking and a good blend of visual and practical effects. there is nothing "better" in this old and slow way of making things.
So true!!! They thought it was gonna be a flop and prepared for disaster but little did they know they created a masterpiece, a game changer in movie making, and special effects!!! And the special effects have survived the test of time and has held up well over the years!!! That my friends is talent!!!
This is so amazing, to be able to do that in the 70's is incredible, I'm sure people who saw the movie back at the time were mesmerized. Maybe that's why Star Wars is Star Wars, it affected millions of people so much that it is living until today.
This is what episode 7 needs to do. This concept of visual effects is still more believable than most today. Truly groundbreaking. Gravity was great too.
I agree. Gravity has some of the best visual effects ive ever seen in a movie, but not like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Gravitys behind the scenes was so amazing...seeing how they perfected certain methods that arent used a lot for realistic effects.
***** I love Lord of the Rings as well, absolutely amazing visuals. You can tell when a lot of work is put into a movie and movies like that are the greatest of our time.
Except, the lack of "gravity" in space means that when a ship explodes its parts shouldn't slow down and shouldn't fall towards the bottom of the screen,
Well we didnt say Alfonso Cuarons visual efffects teams were perferct at replicating that kind of visual effect lol. Sure there are mistakes. We are just admiring how beautiful the effects are for a space film and a masterclass trilogy of films that are defining in our time,
All the time and effort they put into these practical effects makes me appreciate the original trilogy so much more. Glad I grew up on the Original Trilogy.
And honestly, it looks way more realistic and natural than any computerized attempt nowadays. I loved watching these movies back in the 80ies and I still love watching them today. No remastering, no computer - pure joy!
***** Perhaps. It depends on who is doing the CGI. This model work could easily have be crappy. I mean, ILM did the model effects for many Trek movies, for example, Search for Spock and the effects were amazing, but the same exact models used in Star Trek V filmed by another company (because it was cheaper) was less than spectacular.
Blame capitalism. Consider how much money it costs to pay a whole crew for 8 hours to product a single second of footage. There's no way producers are going to pay for that when they could have a single person make it in a few hours.
Dallas Van Winkle That’s not the fault of “capitalism,” that’s the fault of lazy Hollywood executives who care more about making money than making good art. Lucas cared about the films he made, and it shows.
John Dykstra's work on that motion control rig was nothing short of revolutionary. And to think that Dennis Muren would later go on to be instrumental in initiating ILM's shift to CG. Thrilling times.
I always knew the Tauntauns were stop motion. In some scenes it was kinda obvious, but the fact that the walkers were blew my mind. I guess since they moved slower it was easier to pull off. Nothing will every touch 4-6. Nothing.
+Harrison DuRant The same thing I learned from doing stop motion animation. The more frames and details you give to the model, the more realistic of the shot you'll get later. And doing stop motion animation kinda consumes a lot of time but worth it.
Yet the same exact people with the same technical also worked on the new movies. It's crazy how many of you people don't know what you're talking about. AT ALL.
To fully appreciate the genius-tier innovation generated at Industrial Light and Magic it is helpful to consider that they built the Computer Operated Motion Control Camera System *FROM THE CIRCUIT BOARDS ON UP.* The equipment necessary to complete the fluid motion control shots of Star Wars’ various spacecraft simply didn’t exist in the mid 1970s. The task required the invention of near unprecedented technology.
Blame capitalism. Consider how much money it costs to pay a whole crew for 8 hours to product a single second of footage. There's no way producers are going to pay for that when they could have a single person make it in a few hours.
ESB's model work is still unmatched to this day. Seriously, if the method would only come back with modern compositing techniques, it would be unstoppable. This movie has the best stop motion I've ever seen too.
I remember seeing this documentary when I was about 11yrs old and being amazed! Inspired, my brother and I even made our own Super8 version of a "space epic". I still remember that Star Wars felt so real to me. Even if some scene had a minor flaw or something (ex. a faulty light sabre glow, or a funny blue screen space artifact), the visuals were amazing, and the story was so unique at the time. The best part of the movie was actually imagining what was just outside the shot. It was a fantastic jumping off point for my own young imagination.
These movies are the ones I grew up on and kids today have no idea what they missed out on with these originals and the toys we had that Kenner made!!! These movies were my childhood!!!
This here is one of the most compelling reasons to release the unaltered original trilogy on Blu Ray; not doing so is a slap in the face to such a dedicated, talented group of individuals and their hard work.
This is incredible and is part of the true legacy of Star Wars, not just the movie itself but the making of it is a wonderful and interesting story. We can only hope that all of the amazing work that the people shown here have done will not be lost. This is a piece of history.
Can't imagine doing all this practical effects on low budgets nowadays (time, costs, planning) but this is increadible and Star Wars is definitely a shiny milestone in global cinematography.
It's sad how Lucasfilm has decided that we should not be able to enjoy the results of such painstaking dedication on a modern format such as BluRay. So much of that hard work was replaced with CG, and often it was lazily replaced. The model makers had designed each of the X-Wings to have a unique appearance, such as the markings on the wings, yet the CG version has them looking all the same. They could have fixed some errors through the use of CG, like inserting the R2 units in the Y-Wings during the scenes where they were neglected to be added, but instead they just wizzed it down their collective pantleg. I think it's great that they got rid of the transparency issue in the Snowspeeder cockpit, removing the matte shadows following the TIE Fighters, and correcting the parallax in the Death Star detention center corridor. That is how CG should be implemented. But what we got was the removal of much of the great practical effects, Greedo shooting at Han, and that terrible song and dance scene in Jedi.
+stevethefishdotnet yes, forget how expensive such methods would be in modern days and how CG now outclasses old physical methods both in visual and costs it was impressive for the time it was made and perhaps the Phantom Menace CG effects were somewhat poor but beyond that, i hardly see how physical effects beats CG nowadays ever since Ep2 lol
xGoodOldSmurfehx No, our eyes can tell. Using practical effects look more real. CG enhancing practical effects is how it's used best. The new Star Wars movies are using more practical effects, real models, etc.

stevethefishdotnet i know, that awkward moment when a character looks fake when its actually real and a "fake" character looks real when its "fake" XD im aware that Phantom Menace used completely new technologies at the time, very primitive CG techs but it was still awful overall
+stevethefishdotnet This comment makes me cringe. You think CG is a matter of 'Oh lets just slap that on there... Ok done!' CG takes just as long, if not longer, than practical effects.
Nicholas Bussard Nah he was just evading landmines. They are pretty agile machines. I feel sorry for the snowtroopers inside though...they must be pretty shaken up.
I remember being in the theater when they showed the trailer for The Empire Strikes Back. When a quick shot through rebel binoculars of the AT-AT Walkers was shown, most of the audience let out a 'Whoaaaa!! Like everything else in these films, they were extremely unique, new and fun Disney understands NOTHING about this franchise, it's original appeal, and the fan base (my peer group) who made 'Star Wars' a household name.
What I love most about Star Wars is the diversity amongts the fans themselves. For instance, you have fans who love the prequels, fans who love the original trilogy, fans who love A New Hope the most, fans who love Empire! Fans who love Jedi, fans who love Star Wars because of the music, fans who love the dog fight scenes, the lightsaber duels, and then you have fans like myself who adores the practical effects and THIS! Simple, yet difficult and patient shots of models and stop motion. LOVE it!
I'm sorry but Watching the original Star wars after Watching Rogue One and Star wars just looks fake. I mean it looks real enough, especially for it's time, but it wasn't to the point where you couldn't tell what was real or not. THAT BEING SAID, Models can sill look spectacular when using modern technology and digital compositing. A great example would be Interstellar. Everything felt so real in that movie because there wasn't a single greenscreen and very little CGI. Most shots of the Endurance were done with a model, as well as all the other ships. They even went as far as to project the space background outside of the windows to have it all filmed in-Camera. I think it's quite an achievement.
I LOVE animation and it was Star Wars that got me animating and into film making. Everything felt so real because it was...Tiny models crafted by hundreds of artists. This documentary is awesome! :D
Wow those Model Ships, AT-AT Walkers and the Tauntauns are awesome. What's cool is that Mark Hamil narrates part of this video. May the Force be with you.
taking the time to do a stop motion scene like that for the holochess set is something that your average viewer may take for granted, but it's also what makes your avid viewer a fanatic
Truly impressive! I was not alive to watch star wars 4 when it came out, but I imagine it was a spectacular movie for visual effects back then. Still stands up perfectly fine today! The glass painting was a technique I never knew about. WOW!
Star Wars made such an impact because it had every thing the greatest movies need. An imaginative script with suspense, drama, action, emotional and moral questioning, also stunning visual effects (thank you investors), mostly great acting. and director / crew who genuinely cared about the creation enough to put real love and patience into the project. CGI advances will be a great resource for VII but We want an AMAZING film. Not "did you see how they used such great CGI that they could go through every avenger like it was one continuous shot."
Great video! First Star Wars movies have so much charisma and charming personality just because they were made by hands of the team of magicians! ))) No CGI!!!!) Hand - made! Nothing can beat this! Thanks for sharing!
Kha Ngo i know right i mean i would rather watch a visual effect that is a actual object than something digital i think digital should be used for something that is not possible to actually do
Todd Johnson Or at least a balanced blend of both. CGI has it's place, It just doesn't need to be overdone. When it makes the film start to look like Toy Story I think it is being overdone in my opinion.
Todd Johnson aye, take Spider Man 2 (the good one, the original one) and take a look. only certain parts are actually CGI, the majority of the film was the actual actors on a set, and the background being a green screen. if you look at movies now, it's ALL green screen... i don't think there was a single environment that was "real" in Star Wars episode III. and take Spider Man 3 also, WAY too much CGI. it could have been a lot better. And i agree with what you said about Practical effects and CGI working in harmony Inception showed this, and so did Interstellar. The Ice planet in Interstellar was actually near volcano in Alberta, and the suits that the characters wore were actual suits created by the props department fitted with radio so the actors could talk to the producers and director, water cooling systems, and oxygen. and i'm pretty certain that the Endurance during the Docking Scene (spoiler alert kinda) was a model that they filmed and had green screens surrounding it.
I went to the behind the scenes star wars exhibition about 12 years ago, I was studying illustration and to see the Matte painting backgrounds for Hoth was truly amazing, they were outstanding
I wish movies today would still use models for their ships. I think that the way star wars and other movies like 1979 alien did it just had this realistic feel. And they could still use all the modern effects to make the background space scenes look awesome but still use real models for the ships. I really want to see someone make a space movie in that fashion again.
With the time it took to put all the special effects together, there must not have been much rest between Star Wars and Empire. And I am ever thankful.
Just imagine working for month(s) on a particular miniature or model, with painstaking effort and skill you bring it to life beautifully, and then in a day it must be blown up.
These classic techniques, awesome they still are, succeeded even older techniques, CGI of today is the next step in that evolution. Yoda: Being Obsolete (death) is a natural part of special effects (life). Rejoice for those around you who transform into the CGI (Force). Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed that is. Anakin Skywalker: What must I do, Master Yoda? Yoda: Train yourself to let go... of everything you fear to lose.
***** cgi looks good. but it's not impressive. Models, miniatures, artwork, prosthetics, animatronics, precise camera work, real sets, are actually impressive. The fact you can pretty much just do anything on a computer just means the magic is lost. Special effects is more than just what the thing actually looks like. It's like anything on screen. Good looking actors with no soul and passion will always be worse than relatable and real actors with substance, soul and passion.
***** Oh yeah I agree, CGI can look great, especially in recent years. With Gravity I also forgot I was watching CGI a lot of the time. But at the end of the day, if they had done the effects for real, it would have been more impressive from a visual standpoint. Now obviously in a film like Gravity they couldn't have gone to space and built the shuttles and done the effects for real so they obviously had to do CGI. But my point is that when filmmakers can actually easily do something practically, yet they just choose to do it with CGI, it's a huge shame and the magic is lost.
Ryan Page I'm saying people who craft real physical artwork, which goes to people who then photograph it with specific lighting, lenses, and camera movements, which then results in it looking like the real thing on screen, is more resonant because you can tell it's a real effect. Whether it's a real set, or a real explosion, model, landscape, prosthetic creature, etc etc. It's just more impressive because you realise that it's a real place, person, thing. It wasn't just made up in a computer. If it takes time and effort to produce CG and the artists have passion and fun doing so, then great. Good for them. I'm not ignoring that, but I'm talking about the medium, not the artists.
in our search for progress we have forgotten the beauty that artists created. Are today's films really superior to such a masterpiece? Can an artist working on the computer truly surpass the passion and love that was put into these films? Did we forget what true beauty is in our search for perfection?
That was so good for that time of day. Watching these older movies on Blu-ray was as cool as watching the newer ones almost. The two trilogies seemed to have different feels to them but as for the special effects, they may have had more variety in the newer movies but the older ones didn't seem to bad at all.
The first voice over man (narrating the footage from Star Wars (1977)) is the guy who did the voice over for Buck Rogers in the 25th Century! So cool! Brilliant video. Thank you for posting.
i reall appreciate the practical effects and how groundbreaking these effects were but it's faster and less work when using CG but done right CG looks better than practical. but a balance of both should be even better and that's where the force awakens will show. they used some practical effects and are going to enhance them with some CG. looks and sounds great!
Os caras tiravam leite de pedra!Magnifico os efeitos especias para época, algo muito avançado Realmente STAR WARS merece todos os creditos de todos os tempos
I remember watching this documentary with my brother over Christmas, it was pre video so it was a very special occasion, when an actual clip of the movie came up it was awesome
Crazy how much time and effort went into these shots back then! Although the result was well worth it.
Lord.... the time put into these older movies is unreal
M&N Distribution I mean like if done well it can blend in just fine with editing software these day.
Takes even more time now. CGI artists have to render each frame indiviually

Nicholas Bussard Nah he was just evading landmines. They are pretty agile machines. I feel sorry for the snowtroopers inside though...they must be pretty shaken up.
I actually want to see the entire trilogy in that paper animated style
This is why these movies were amazing!!! A lot of dedication, thought and creativity were put into these films!
I remember being in the theater when they showed the trailer for The Empire Strikes Back. When a quick shot through rebel binoculars of the AT-AT Walkers was shown, most of the audience let out a 'Whoaaaa!! Like everything else in these films, they were extremely unique, new and fun
Disney understands NOTHING about this franchise, it's original appeal, and the fan base (my peer group) who made 'Star Wars' a household name.
LOVE it!
still looks better than most of the cgi on film
they are all looking fake either way
+Jorge Rodriguez Are you kidding me? Have you ever tried to do CG? It's just as difficult and time consuming as Practical effects.
+richard Bennett
Ha ha ha ha no
+RJrules64 What ever, CGI:s will never change the charm of stop motion FX.
6:42 Take On Me: Star Wars Edition
@@kerguelen_cabbage Lol I know I'm super late to this, but this is awesome!
RIP original Star Wars effects 1977-1997
+Luke 'Caomhnóir' S-C "special effects"
there's nothing special about cgi, lol.
I LOVE animation and it was Star Wars that got me animating and into film making. Everything felt so real because it was...Tiny models crafted by hundreds of artists. This documentary is awesome! :D
It's really really sad to see those models blown up =(
Mega Bondagemon don't worry! Those were made specifically for the sake of blowing up :)
You know some people lose limbs in real war, right?
Chris Mirell I don’t think you understand his comment.
Chris Mirell stop
I just want to know what the concoction was
Wow those Model Ships, AT-AT Walkers and the Tauntauns are awesome. What's cool is that Mark Hamil narrates part of this video. May the Force be with you.
33 people believed Jar-Jar was the key to all this.

Henry Jones Jr. No, 77 people
Henry Jones Jr. But he doesn't appeared until episode 1
you arent very bright are you?
taking the time to do a stop motion scene like that for the holochess set is something that your average viewer may take for granted, but it's also what makes your avid viewer a fanatic
Pains me when he says "Planes".
What a master... Dennis Muren!! He embodied the " magic" in ILM. This is why we need to go BACK and do it like this again. Can we? Purty pleeeeezzz...
The animatics at 6:50 are cool🤗
Great video! First Star Wars movies have so much charisma and charming personality just because they were made by hands of the team of magicians! ))) No CGI!!!!) Hand - made! Nothing can beat this!
Thanks for sharing!
Cinema needs to go back to this actual physical models
Todd Johnson Yeah they may not look as "realistic", but this method brings back a certain charming elements to it. Love it!!
***** i agree i think practical effects and CGI should work in harmony
So much love, time, and money was put into the original trilogy.

Bunnyhopping AT-AT :O
MagicAccent Oh shit! They're evolving
+Luke 'Caomhnóir' S-C gmod is lame stfu
That bunny at-at was cool. I still can't get over rebel planes
I call hax.
I wish Mark Hamill narrated my life
No kidding
I asked him to, but he said he doesn't like you.
And after he narrates for 5 seconds, what else is he supposed to do?
Just imagine working for month(s) on a particular miniature or model, with painstaking effort and skill you bring it to life beautifully, and then in a day it must be blown up.
I'll never complain about using Gimp to compose a picture again.
This is absolutely beautiful. Revolutionary.
A lost art I'm afraid. lets hope they bring back some cool techniques like this and not just CGI from here on...
ThePaperclipGuy Are you suggesting that digital artists put no passion or soul into their work?
Ryan Page I'm saying people who craft real physical artwork, which goes to people who then photograph it with specific lighting, lenses, and camera movements, which then results in it looking like the real thing on screen, is more resonant because you can tell it's a real effect. Whether it's a real set, or a real explosion, model, landscape, prosthetic creature, etc etc. It's just more impressive because you realise that it's a real place, person, thing. It wasn't just made up in a computer. If it takes time and effort to produce CG and the artists have passion and fun doing so, then great. Good for them. I'm not ignoring that, but I'm talking about the medium, not the artists.
stop motion animation was ground breaking back then, now, to me it has turned into an art form that takes skills and patience to do a masterpiece
Stop motion was in existence since the 1920's.
6:40 Never thought about the possibility of watching an AT-AT actually jumping on scene...
Can't even imagine the massive ammount of work did take to put the whole movie together... old school visual effects at its finest
LOVE This Movie trilogy
FAVORITE OF ALL TIME
this amazes the shit out of me. the masterful skill and patience it takes and the sheer cleverness of it all. WOW.
Amazing. I can say the same for the prequels' CGI and practical effects too.
Great work, great minds and huge visioners! One of these guys is Phill Tippett - his new production "Mad God" 2021 - very exciting journey...
I love young Mark Hamill’s voice.
in our search for progress we have forgotten the beauty that artists created. Are today's films really superior to such a masterpiece? Can an artist working on the computer truly surpass the passion and love that was put into these films? Did we forget what true beauty is in our search for perfection?
This ends abruptly
lol ikr
I used to have this documentary on VHS.
Kotor 2 :V
@@carloscantu6659 haha yeah i know what you mean
It's from an hour long TV special that was shown after the release of Empire Strike Back.
Mamma Mia the amount of work that went into making this! Makes me appreciate this movie that much more....Super Cool! Thank you for this :)
I still wish productions would use these techniques, in future productions i would love to use these methods.
Its all about who can do it the quickest and cheapest now
That was so good for that time of day. Watching these older movies on Blu-ray was as cool as watching the newer ones almost. The two trilogies seemed to have different feels to them but as for the special effects, they may have had more variety in the newer movies but the older ones didn't seem to bad at all.
Fantastic
I can watch this for hours.c'mon guys we need more
Way better than the Star Wars:The Force Awakens's practical effects.
Revive Hans lol
Revive Hans nah
Revive Hans Um no...
Revive Hans lol no
Did They CGI You Into Rouge One Or Where You Really There?
The first voice over man (narrating the footage from Star Wars (1977)) is the guy who did the voice over for Buck Rogers in the 25th Century! So cool!
Brilliant video. Thank you for posting.
10:37 millennium falcon asteroid.
This is incredible! It’s so cool learning about the SFX of the original trilogy, they use such clever techniques!
this is when movies were magical, all in camera effects from true craftsman and women............. now everything is pixelated.
Much respect and love to these pioneers who paved the way for which we see blockbuster motion pictures today.
RIP Carrie Fisher you will be missed. :{
😢
CrispCarbon Guess what, they finished taking the shots for Episode 8 with her! She'll be in the next star wars still! Wooo
CrispCarbon the only and only princess Leigh for me 😭😭😭😭
Those hand-drawn animatics are absolutely fascinating. Haha, it's like watching Heavy Metal
Porkins no!
He couldnt hold it :/
Excellent video! It shows the enormous amount of work needed to make those spectacular scenes.
Can't believe how dirty those optical shots were, even back then.
6:45 that ATAT is so adorable. This was a very fascinating video.
i reall appreciate the practical effects and how groundbreaking these effects were but it's faster and less work when using CG but done right CG looks better than practical. but a balance of both should be even better and that's where the force awakens will show. they used some practical effects and are going to enhance them with some CG. looks and sounds great!
And overall it looked very decent!!! Way better than the prequels!!!
Os caras tiravam leite de pedra!Magnifico os efeitos especias para época, algo muito avançado Realmente STAR WARS merece todos os creditos de todos os tempos
This is amazing and very inspiring
I remember watching this documentary with my brother over Christmas, it was pre video so it was a very special occasion, when an actual clip of the movie came up it was awesome
