He's now the Lucasfilm Art Department/ILM Concept Supervisor, just under Doug Chiang in the credits following every Star Wars film or television property since Attack of the Clones, and is also responsible for a significant amount of the conceptual artwork inspiring films and television across the medium, from Avatar to Jurassic World, and almost everything even remotely imaginative in existence in-between. But, don't take MY word for it lol check out his online portfolio and website for yourself, he has everything uploaded there from his early sketches of Kamino and Utapau to Mustafar and the Various vehicles, cities, Starships, and creatures populating the Star Wars Universe that he has created, from his imagination straight to the screen. It's absolutely amazing. 👍

To the people that dislike / thumbs down this video: You aren't a real Star Wars fan. :) There is nothing here to dislike.
The visuals, models, passion, techniques used and craftsmanship is second to none.
Lucasfilm / Disney could have said "No, we aren't doing this. Its too expensive", etc. but they put their money and time on the line and it paid off. This is beautiful!
Inside ILM: Destroying the Razor Crest
F
I thought the empire destroyed it
Really goes to show how much sound design builds it too!
Practical models are always the best , that’s why I build them
Great work team Mando! I'm so excited for season 2 knowing that this series is in great hands!
It's so awesome to see John dusting off his Canon 5D with Nikon glass from the 80's to create some magic!
Heaven! Please give us a highly detailed model kit 😇
Thank you for keeping the dream alive!
Imagine their pain when Jon Favreau said they were going to blow the thing up.
I thought the same thing. I don't know if they actually blew up a physical model, or did that all CGI?
All that time, effort and pride in workmanship going in to that model... and then they blew it up?!?! WWWAAAAHHHH haha
@@jedironin380 he was still looking for another razor crest ship, he may yet get another one
A little birdie told me to keep your eyes peeled during The Mandalorian and Grogu movie coming out in 2026 😃
Wow! What I’m most amazed by is the well rounded skills these guys have. They write software code, design and build actual physical models, photograph and film the models and create incredible imagery. I mean, what kind of training do you need to do all that? Each person is literally a software engineer, a mechanical engineer, an electrical engineer, a photographer, and a film maker!!
Jon Favreau just keeps bringing the game changers. Can't wait to see what he does next. Favreau paired with the best FX house are going to continue to produce epic results.
I’m so glad ILM went with using the miniature and not just CGI which them being ILM they could have easily taken the easier cheaper way but because they are ILM they gave us this amazing ship in real life
This is the way!
A new generation of filmmaking process. 💖
Practical VFX is definitely the way to go!
This is super fun, but at this point the digital and practical Razor Crest are indistinguishable.
@@dbroadwayvfx Definitely true but who wouldn't want to build an actual razer crest model to use ;)
@@ryanblocker4107 Indeed. It's really cool.
Nah! Both are great and both are needed.
VideoGuy agreed
a really cool design! it looks quite vintage, the cockpit reminds me to the old dome train cars from the 50s. a few sharp angles to make it more dynamic. yes, i really like it!👌
we will miss you razor crest!!!
And here is Mr. John Knoll, one of the masterminds behind Photoshop and other Software, just casually enginering this motion control rig. Great Stuff from ILM as always. Always nice to see John, Doug and the rest of the Team creating movie magic!
As a fan of behind the scenes and making of
I can't wait!
Madness😭😭 the game is forever changing and I’m loving it
After watching this video earlier on, seeing episode 6 today, it added to the pain. Had to come back and see some of the new comments here as well. I knew deep down the ship was going to go at some point, given it's already rough time.
I was so sad when it happened. The episode was very good but that really ruined my night. It was such a cool ship and I feel like the viewers bonded with it parallel to Mando. I loved the ship and I really hope he finds a new one or something
Terrible what they did to it, a pretty decent design, that could have really became a favourite. Dont worry though, we have a Naboo starfighter now........
THIS IS WHAT GREAT SPECIAL FX IS MADE OF!! Practical is KING and folks like Favreau and Del Toro out there making films in this manner and ONLY having CGI used where the practical needs just a little help IS THE WAY!!
The nerd guy in me is just geeking out on this. I've rewatched the original trilogy behind the scenes documentary countless times. Everytime they explain a vfx shot, it's just mindblowing. And now this at this time and age. Really inspiring stuff.
What do you think of the Mandalorian Gallery on Disney+?
Surunitemi Akanni-Oye it's the best. I love how they divided topics per episode
@@seabedrock There are zealots and fanatics out there who would do everything to cut off their nose in order to spite their face and proclaim every Star Wars product produced by Disney is rubbish - just because they have developed a hive mind hatred of the woman in charge Kathleen Kennedy.
Could you believe that some of these reprobates actually spread the rumour/clickbait that the President of Lucasfilm KK, who oversees the company's three divisions: Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, has been banned from the set of the Mandalorian - for some unknown reason - hence the success of the series. Watching The Mandalorian Gallery tells anyone unequivocally who is in charge if one needs further proof. It is obviously a fervent dream wish for these man-babies to ensure that she gets no credit for the of The Mandalorian and all the blame for any negative perceptions or fan dissatifaction with the Star Wars franchise.
All the amount of time this took to create one simple ship, is outstanding. I love that dedication!
This was great! So cool to see the ideas coming together and crafted into something real!
Awesome. Proofs that just because you have an old, dated camera you can still make art💚💚
The Mandalorian: #RIPRazorCrest
The ILM model: A life well spent. All hail the Razor Crest.
Me: Now I think I'll want a Razor Crest and a Mandalorian-era Slave One models for my collection of iconic spacecraft. 😋
Projects like this gives the senior crew a chance to show the greenhorns the spirit of old school film making. they need that experience, to carry into the next generation.
I love that we've almost come full circle. Kit bashing used to be the way these things were done, now we can digitally design the model so we can still kind of digitally kit bash. And print almost anything. CGI has it's place, but filming a physical model ALWAYS produces better results in the right hands. ILM is excellent and I hope there is more of this practical/digital hybridization in the future.
So much love went into that show! May it get many more seasons
I Love it. The ILM Studios, The Greatest University is still part Old School smoothly mixed in with New School. How cool is that?
Oooh man, I loooooove the craftmanship, the problem solving, and the genuine love for Starwars. You guys are amazing and an inspiration :)
Looks like a Republic gunship fuselage with Firefly engines
Was that the primary buffer panel ?
did Ryan Church work on Firefly? The engines echo his nacelle designs for the 2009 Enterprise in the Abram-universe Star Trek
Mal! I don't wanna explode!
Every Star Wars fan knows all about Doug Chiang, of course, but the guy who's been there just as long and has been just as influential, on both the overall Star Wars aesthetic, going back to the prequels, and on myself, is Ryan Church.
I'm glad Jon and Dave are keeping the tradition of taking absolutely beautiful models that are painstakingly handmaid. Then taking said models and rigging them to explode in amazing fashion.

Thank you to everyone at ILM and all the other departments associated with them for brining us such a beautiful creation. The authenticity of the shots really shows in the Mandalorian as feeling like the OT, which is something I have always appreciated about the show. There are no words for how excited I am for season two to see all the hard work everyone has put in!!!
This is what Star Wars has always been about: creation.
Wow! I remember watching the early docs about ILM back in the 80's. I thought it was fascinating back then, but this blew my mind.
the old school will never die
I cry tears of joy when I see such videos.
This is really nothing. You should see the eight episodes of The Mandalorian Gallery on Disney+ to really see behibd the scenes of the Mandalorian coming together from concept pitch to screen.
I would love to see Behind the Scenes shots of the Stop-Motion Blurrgs.
The closest would be season 1 episode 4 and 5 of the Gallery as you see the rigs mounted before the vfx converts them to the blurrgs
@@surunitemiakanni-oye4346 Okay, thanks. I only watched three episodes of the Gallery, guess I missed this one.
@@Scifogon it's great, watch the rest before season 2 comes out. The music episode and the vfx episodes are the best ones
Putting workmanship, detail, and individual creativity back into the studio system is something I didn't think possible today, and certainly not by Disney. Really incredible.
I got reminded of the clone transports when I saw the razor crest
A clue to the work of original concept artist Star Wars sequels Doug Chiang
Also, jango, the clone template, was a semi-mandalorian... So they are very related
I wish I worked there. That sounds like fun all day long. And the neo pixels for the thrusters. Is brilliant.
2:40 there's a mistake. Thats not TPM behind the scenes, thats AOTC behind the scenes
Right? Unless they're unveiling the revelation that they designed the clonetroopers and republic gunships during TPM.
@@AnnoCinema that would be "a surprise to be sure but a welcome one"
Congrats to every single member of the crew on their amazing work!
Rest in piece :(
Anything Star Wars gets me excited like crazy. The creativity is amazing.
Doug Chiang is a legend.
5th rate designer
Wow this show. This is the first time I've seen behind the scenes effects that seem special. For the last 20 years every movie would just so people sitting behind a keyboard or actors jumping around in front of a green screen.
These guys must have been devastated when they saw Chapter 14
I thought the Razor Crest was CGI as most things tend to be nowadays.
Never thought it was a real model and was used and then touched up with a bit of CGI.
Now this is how Star Wars should be done. Nerds making cool things, ILM really is Magic. This is the Way.
And that's why Mandalorian is amazing .. you can really feel that its made by fans for the fans and not just some money making thing like "star wars"
