It's actually really interesting that they had all the "alien" lines being spoken in English on-set, so the characters were actually having conversations, rather than the main characters having effective monologues broken up by roars or random sets of syllables.
It’s even cooler for the ones that didn’t get subtitles, like chewie. For my whole life I never knew what he was supposed to be saying, but then a few years ago I found a clip of the original scene without the roars. Now I want to know what he says through the whole movie
I think it’s funny that Dr. Evazan and Wuher the bartender have cockney accents in the original cut since the scenes were made in England but not dubbed yet.
In the Marvel comics version that line got left in. As well as deleted scenes with Luke talking to other Tattooine friends his own age, and Han talking to Jabba (and Jabba was only human size)

@Cliven Longsight exactly, and it's the same with ESB, one of my top 3 greatest films of all time. it's obvious from those deleted scenes that without her it would've turned out to be sophomoric garbage like the prequels. george truly always had terrible instincts when it came to human interaction and dialogue. instead, through her skill at editing and irving kershner's direction we got philosophical space romance for all time. george lucas with totally free reign was a terrible thing.

Well, for your infomation, the theatrical cuts of all of the original trilogy Star Wars movies recieve added scenes for the sole reason because Lucas has to butcher scenes. Thats it. The way they were made were perfect at first, only to be made worse over the last 40 years with new edits. Prime example, the Han and Greedo scene, another bit added with the Disney+ streaming service, because Lucas wanted it that way and didn't care when other people told him a change was good or bad, he would still do it. That is a genius practical effect with the speeders: cover the wheels with mirror panels across the whole bottom so it reflects the ground and appears to hover. This movie had such amazing propwork and practical effects its ridiculous.
He didn't hate it. He enjoyed the filming. In fact, he pulled a prank on Mark Hamill when they're not shooting. He just don't want to be known only as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Also some Star Wars fans irritated him.

Hearing David Prowse (Darth Vader) temporarily recite Vader's lines with his thick accent muffled under that helmet is great! 😆 It's amazing what what a little voice acting and sound fx can do. For the people on set suddenly Vader went from hilarious to the imposing cybernetic Sith Lord we all know and love.
Without his voice being heard or his face being seen, he did a great job acting the part. The set of his shoulders. The tilt of his head, conveyed a lot. RIP David Prowse.
These aren’t really bloopers. They appear to be many of the final takes for such scenes, just beyond the cutting and editing used in the film. This film was truly saved in the edit.
Eriamjh 1138 They are least partially outtakes. We do not see that bit in the final bit where the stage hand runs up to the man unconscious! And some of these scenes are definitely not the takes used the film.
Considering how it looked to the actors at the time, it must have come as a huge surprise when their cheesy little movie about a Princess, farm boy, wizard and pirate got a huge following. It just goes to show that having faith in a great team of editors, writers and directors is very important.
it's so charming at 0:48 when peter cushing goes from the kindest looking soul into the character of evil tarkin and back into sweet man again. May he rest in peace
Carrie Fisher had a hard time playing against Cushing because he was so disarmingly pleasant as a person, she had to pretend it wasn't Peter in order to think of Tarkin as a villain.

So glad I was born in 70 and got to experience all this when it was brand new! Seeing the movie in the theater with my dad, the toys at Christmas time, the collectable drinking glasses at Burger King,! Star Wars was everywhere and it was all new and exciting! It sure has been a wild ride! Love seeing the old footage. Cant imagine my life without Star Wars!!
And to think that George Lucas actually considered using a disco music soundtrack for the movie as disco was king at this time. Fortunately, he decided to go with John Williams, instead.

That's actually a cut scene of him watching the battle in orbit. It was in the original novelization, based on first drafts of the script. There are bits of dialog of him talking to some local 'friends' who show open disdain and disrespect for him, as he pines about wanting to become a pilot and join the Rebellion. I never knew they actually filmed that scene.
I would watch the shit out of the originals with the original voice cues left in. No voice modulation for vader, no james earl jones, english speaking chewie, english speaking aliens lol
Well, you have to consider that this all happened "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away". They hadn't yet invented those grippy-sole socks with kitty cat faces knit into the toes.
They have like 3 people to play him. The body, voice, and unmasked version. That's why he sounds like that. Its the body actor who's talking but his voice wasn't intimidating enough

Saw Star Wars after my 6 grade graduation at a Theater in Manhattan, picked up the souvenir booklet at the concession stand . Sci-fi until then was low budget stuff and Star Wars was no different, but it was ! Brought the genre to the forefront. Even resurrected Star Trek . Thanks George !

He's actually talking to the stormtrooper who you can still see in the doorway who ruined the shot. Jack Purvis is the droid and is doing what he is supposed to.
David Prowse gave Vader a specific gait and movement that just isn't duplicated by others. Out of all the fiction it is, it says something about the duality of Vader.
David Prowse was perfect as Vader, but watching this it does make you realise that, despite his claims stating that he was led to believe that his voice would be used, there was no way Lucas could ever have used it. Carrie Fisher referred to him as Darth Farmer, and watching this, he does sound like a very annoyed farmer. “Oi, get of my land!!!”
You can see why the cast all thought it was going to be shit.

It's amazing what what a little voice acting and sound fx can do. For the people on set suddenly Vader went from hilarious to the imposing cybernetic Sith Lord we all know and love.
Without his voice being heard or his face being seen, he did a great job acting the part. The set of his shoulders. The tilt of his head, conveyed a lot. RIP David Prowse.

I never actually stopped to realize that actors are routinely placed near exploding pyrotechnics and are expected to stay focused and in-character.
This honestly changes my perspective of the entire movie. A lot of hard work and dedication had to go into making those scenes.

That's actually a cut scene of him watching the battle in orbit. It was in the original novelization, based on first drafts of the script. There are bits of dialog of him talking to some local 'friends' who show open disdain and disrespect for him, as he pines about wanting to become a pilot and join the Rebellion. David Prowse gave Vader a specific gait and movement that just isn't duplicated by others. Out of all the fiction it is, it says something about the duality of Vader.
David Prowse was perfect as Vader, but watching this it does make you realise that, despite his claims stating that he was led to believe that his voice would be used, there was no way Lucas could ever have used it. Carrie Fisher referred to him as Darth Farmer, and watching this, he does sound like a very annoyed farmer. “Oi, get of my land!!!”
