This movie is about special effects. Not about story. ...wait a minute.... didn't George Lucas say ar one point that movies where about story... not special effects?
This video reminded me about why I disliked the movie, and why I have only seen it once with no plans to see it twice. But behind the scenes information is always interesting.
Guys, Everyone Knows that the Prequels are bad, but i think "The Phantom Menace" is better than episodes 2 and 3 in VFX, but i think they could of Use a Little Less CGI, the Battle Droids for example, are CGI but they are Lit & Rendered so realistically that they look like they are Physical Machines in the real world, and other characters as well besides in the Late 1990s CGI is starting to get better and more popular to use, they could have used Computers for Compositing & Rendering the Elements all together, George Lucas had to wait for the Prequels to be made, some of the Characters & Elements in the Prequels are so Complex that he had to wait for the Technology to catch up to achieve his Vision.
The practical effects actually increased with every Star Wars film. Attack of the clones and Revenge of the sith used more then Phantom Menace. The difference and the reason clones and sith look so clear and crisp is because they were shot on digital cameras, the first ever films in cinematic history to do so.
but is "too much freedom" a good thing? i mean, the reason why Star Wars was good was because it was a space western, not a political, city filled, CGI waste land!
+otdoud that's exactly what happened when they made the originals too. Why would they challenge him? When it comes to Star Wars George Lucas is the boss, it's all in his head. I'm not saying ideas didn't come from other people as films are always collaborative efforts, but the myth that the only reason the originals were good was because people didn't listen to George Lucas is a complete lie. For example, on empire strikes back if Irvin Kershner had a question or needed help on a particular scene who do u think he would ask? Well obviously he would ask George Lucas because it was George's story. Now let's say George came up to Kershner and said " hey Kersh, we need to go back to this scene and change it up" what do u think Kersh would say? He would say "yes George, we'll do it as soon as possible". People were always yes men to George Lucas when it came to Star Wars especially after the first film came out and was a hit.
This video is a good illustration of why the prequels look bad, and it has nothing to do with "good CGI" or "bad CGI." Even the best CGI in the world won't be convincing if it's used to depict things that couldn't exist. That's why IMO the worst CG character is Watto. He may be photorealistic, but you just know those tiny little wings couldn't possibly support the weight of his fat belly. There's a reason we don't see golden retriever-sized hummingbirds flying around. Your brain knows physical objects couldn't be behaving the way they're shown to be behaving, so the whole thing ends up looking fake, regardless of the quality of the CGI. McCallum says Lucas, in the writing, didn't let himself be restricted by what scenes or characters would be hard to do, and I believe him, but I don't think it's the whole truth. Rather, I think Lucas expressly tried to write scenes and characters that *would* be hard to do. Like, he let himself be restricted by what would be *easy* to do. Ambition is fine, but in this case it led them to create fundamentally unrealistic locations and characters that can't be redeemed no matter how detailed the surfacing becomes.
+Robert Pritchard maybe you are in the wrong movie, maybe you should see 60 Shades of Gray, or Leaving las vegas, or something that have humans in earth. this is Sci fi/fantasy. The more natural thing is to have things that doen't exist.
+Christian Valenzuela I agree, Why should Star Wars be limited to what it could be by 3 films that came out from 1977-1983. It's a galaxy far far away so why would every planet look like earth or look worn down and lived in. I love all the movies including force awakens, and imo all the prequels ever did was add even more depth to the OT.
@@lionheart11381 the environments in AtoC are mostly miniatures, with plenty of sets and real world locations. Sorry they couldn't build you a life-sized Geonosian arena.
some things are cool, like the music, effects, but it's the worst episode of all...jar jar was an exaggerated character, appears in many scenes, boring
@The SNES Man Correct. People tend to forget that the OT also has issues. No movie is perfect. (LOTR comes close for example, but even one would notice issues regarding it).
The main problem with the three films is that regardless of why type of effects was used, they all looked computer animated and fake. The whole atmosphere is wrong. I believe you could go back to the original takes, re-edit them with a different effects approach and you'd get a completely different movie that to me would look way better.
Hey everyone, do you hate jar jar binks as much as I do? Well if you do, watch our most recent video, where jar jar binks gets shot and killed multiple times!
Notice the fear and distrust in everyone's eyes. Also notice that they never elaborate on how many shots may be pointless. No one had the bottle to go "George, this is unnecessary and totally over the top". Ever see behind the scenes on Jedi? George: Well, I guess once the fighters enter the superstructure of the Death Star, then all the cruisers should fly in too" How many cruisers flew into the tiny, fighter-sized superstructure in that film? None. Because it's a stupid idea, both story-wise and even logistically, that smarter people in the know said, "NO, George. That is STUPID" However, fill your team with Yes Men, imbibe your director with a God Complex, ignoring the fact that Star Wars was a COLLABORATIVE EFFORT, from many smart, skilled and clever people, and you get - The Prequels. Many good ideas, but not with Lucas at the helm. NEVER with him having Carte Blanche over everything. So many producers these days don't seem to understand what made their "acquisitions" great in the first place.
You could actually read their actual accounts of what's going on instead of projecting what you think they feel based on what you feel is a "fault" with movies you don't subjectively like. They were nervous as George was wanting to do things nobody else was thinking at the time. It's really that simple and has been stated by John Knoll and others involved in the production. Jonathan Rinzler also said George was challenged and got into arguments with Rick McCallum. So the idea he was a "yes man" isn't true. I wonder who I should trust though. People involved in the making of these films or someone commenting in a comment section that doesn't like what they did. Hmmm...
Kyran Feeley Well do you count the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Lord of the Rings, 300, Sin City and pretty much every blockbuster for the past 10 years, "a waste of time and effort"?
All that talent and money -not create a unfunny cg character that add nothing to the sw universe. I hated tpm when I saw it in theaters. Now not so much but it’s still unwatchable.
Let's see... he brings the Naboo and Gungans together and gives Palpatine emergency powers that leads to the creation of a clone army that begins the Clone Wars. But sure, he's not important at all.

This movie is about special effects. Not about story. ...wait a minute.... didn't George Lucas say ar one point that movies where about story... not special effects?
Good thing the movie is chock full of story - even more so than the OT.
This video reminded me about why I disliked the movie, and why I have only seen it once with no plans to see it twice. But behind the scenes information is always interesting.
That’s probably why you don’t like it, the film gets better with every viewing .
@@mackmitchell94 That's a subjective opinion, not a fact.
Tim Hansen that’s true
@@LangkowskiThat’s A Fact.
@@vykuntapufangtxpreet9546 Yes, my comment is a fact
If Lucas just hired a decent scriptwriter or a decent director then the prequels could have been better.
today's young producers rely on too much CGI . That makes movie tasteless.
It may be the worst Star Wars, which i agree, but it's still a great movie! Haters are a joke...
_The Phantom Menace_ blows away any of the crap being produced by Disney.
Paulo Lameiras its not the worst moron, every episode is freaking beautiful and unique fucking sheep
you've obviously never seen The Last Jedi...

Such a pity... getting rid of Jar-Jar not only would've improved the film but saved them lots of work 🤣
Jar Jar solves the key issue in the film as getting rid of him would allow the Trade Federation to win. So your idea actually makes the film worse.
"Flim is 24 frames per second"
Which is why watching a film on a 120fps TV sucks. Jitter stutter and soap opera effect.
Sounds like a bad tv.
Try SVP PRO 4 with a good monitor.

Yeah right i can design a backward flying bathtub.
+SAW Off you go then, make what these guys made.
Also the prequels aren’t bad at all, only subjectively disliked by some .
Everyone involved with this should hang their heads in shame
The world would have better off without the creation of JarJar Binks.
but is "too much freedom" a good thing? i mean, the reason why Star Wars was good was because it was a space western, not a political, city filled, CGI waste land!
+Aaron Bell I personally believe that one man, unless he's a indie film producer, should never make his own movie. Movies are collaborative efforts.
+otdoud lol but the prequels were a collaborative effort. You watched this video didn't you?
Im talking more so about Georges freedom. Nobody challenged him about his ideas. They all just said yes.
Aaron Bell the prequels were amazing, epic and fun its you who have a problem in your head, I pity you and people who havent enjoyed the prequels
So busy thinking about how unlimited their FX shots could be, they didn't even remember the story..
Its so dense...
Is George Lucas aware of Jar Jar Binks’ controversy?
Are older fans aware Jar Jar and Star Wars is for kids?
RIGHT TURD ONLY
This video is a good illustration of why the prequels look bad, and it has nothing to do with "good CGI" or "bad CGI." Even the best CGI in the world won't be convincing if it's used to depict things that couldn't exist.
+Robert Pritchard It´s called science fiction, dude ;) But maybe you find more enjoyment in realistic things like Starkiller Base.. ;)
A Bee Movie will educate you about watto
I love the prequels but, as I've gotten older, I've realised one of the things I dislike is that the amount of CGI takes away the soul of the film.
Watch the video again and look for things that aren't CGI. You might be shocked by how much there is.
Well I hope you think the same of 98% of films made today.
@@du6167 attack of the Clones is all done in camera. The environments are fake and I feel that. It's not the best.
@@lionheart11381 the environments in AtoC are mostly miniatures, with plenty of sets and real world locations. Sorry they couldn't build you a life-sized Geonosian arena.
@@du6167 Or a life sized death star
some things are cool, like the music, effects, but it's the worst episode of all...jar jar was an exaggerated character, appears in many scenes, boring
Let me get something straight. The prequels are mediocre. They're not bad; they're not good. They're right in the middle.
The sequels are way worse. The prequels are much better.
@The SNES Man Correct. People tend to forget that the OT also has issues. No movie is perfect. (LOTR comes close for example, but even one would notice issues regarding it).
lmao
You could have had 1 character and it would have been a lot better off.
he forgot the illusion of plot
The main problem with the three films is that regardless of why type of effects was used, they all looked computer animated and fake. The whole atmosphere is wrong. I believe you could go back to the original takes, re-edit them with a different effects approach and you'd get a completely different movie that to me would look way better.
liar
Jar-Jar Binks is terribly shoehorned in but I do have some sort of ironic love of Jar-Jar from how terrible he is in every way
Funny how the kids he was intended for never complain. Haha
I think every director needs boundaries, without them you get Jar Jar Binks or badly ethnically stereotyped Transformers.
Hey everyone, do you hate jar jar binks as much as I do? Well if you do, watch our most recent video, where jar jar binks gets shot and killed multiple times!
Jar Jar was a waste of resources
The kids he was intended for would disagree.
star wars I graphics look like a shitty video game today
Notice the fear and distrust in everyone's eyes. Also notice that they never elaborate on how many shots may be pointless. No one had the bottle to go "George, this is unnecessary and totally over the top".
Ever see behind the scenes on Jedi? George: Well, I guess once the fighters enter the superstructure of the Death Star, then all the cruisers should fly in too"
How many cruisers flew into the tiny, fighter-sized superstructure in that film? None. Because it's a stupid idea, both story-wise and even logistically, that smarter people in the know said, "NO, George. That is STUPID"
However, fill your team with Yes Men, imbibe your director with a God Complex, ignoring the fact that Star Wars was a COLLABORATIVE EFFORT, from many smart, skilled and clever people, and you get - The Prequels. Many good ideas, but not with Lucas at the helm. NEVER with him having Carte Blanche over everything. So many producers these days don't seem to understand what made their "acquisitions" great in the first place.
Lucas literally wanted people's help and everyone said no, that he should do the movies his way.
Hmmm...
What a waste of time and effort.
+Kyran Feeley You're an idiot
Rowan J Coleman Wow what a comment
Kyran Feeley Well do you count the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Lord of the Rings, 300, Sin City and pretty much every blockbuster for the past 10 years, "a waste of time and effort"?
Rowan J Coleman No because they're good movies, the prequels ain't.
Kyran Feeley Without the prequels the movies mentioned wouldn't exist and if they did not in their current form.
So much work into such a lousy script.
nope everybody hates it
Not me, so that is not everybody anymore!
