I live in Portugal, bought this reel three months ago, so I'm dialed in now. In 50 years I've owned many higher-end Shimano reels from the OG Chronarchs, Calcuttas, Calais, etc..... and this is the best casting reel. I can chuck a 1.5 squarebill 40 yards EASY into the wind, same with spinnerbaits/buzzbaits, etc. I've had birds attack many topwater walking baits because it's so far from me on the cast, they don't connect it with me. I still don't even see it on US sites like Tackle Warehouse ....too bad. It's a gem. Paired with my IMX Pro 855C CBR --- perfection.
With the new SLX having X-Ship and the new Bantam having Infinity Drive I’m really eager to see what upgrade treatments the higher end reels will get for 22/23
Great video and channel. I waited too long to order, but it just arrived and it really palms well and seems rather light. I think I will use it for some pitching and flipping smaller baits. Thanks again for the content!
Idc 5? Also micromodular gears? Why no curado with idc5? Is it because the scorpion 21 is basically a curado? Excellent content as usual for your channel
yup the scorpion dc is basically a curado dc with a few improvements one more bearing, better drag, mgl spool, and has the IDC 5 brakes. its actually cheaper for me to get then curado DC by 30-40 bucks
If you lived in the America; most American says they don’t need DC reel, they can still catch fish. Plus if there’s actually “a iDC5 curado” you going to high price because with the current iDC4 curado it cost more or $10 more than my 20/21 scorpion dc which is funny lol
Plus most people careless if it’s a iDC4 or iDC5, they think DC reel is DC reel, as long as is a DC reel, they can’t tell the difference 😂 So one time I went fishing, i met a guy who actually think that the curado dc is actually better than the scorpion dc which kinda funny lol, he saying some stupid ass shit, like he knows dc reel hahaha …. Lol
the fact it has the idc5 braking system and is cheaper than the slx dc standard version even after taxes and shipping (at least where i live) is kind crazy
I really enjoyed you video. The attention to detail i top notch. If you had to pick one reel which would you pick Shimano SLX DC XT, Shimano SLX 150 DC or the Scorpion DC?
I like my SLX DC Better than my new Scorpion Dc. It retrieves smoother and the wine sounds louder !!! Got it paired with a Powell Indurance rod SWEET!!!
i have both. i kind of felt a little bit the same way at first when i got the scorpion after using the slx for a year. but more because i was like this IDC5 brake need you to select brake settings some times. but i only have to change it a few times a day between 2-3. and the i noticed the smoothness difference more once i got fish on. the slx dc is nice because its IDC4 brakes makes it a bit simpler set and forget it. number 2 braid and tension just so it affects fall rate by 5-10%. i ran a whole season with no back lashes, unless i forgot to thumb as lure lands, or screwed up cast (eg released to late lure it water 15 ft from the boat.) (i run the scorpion the same way) I also have spots where i need to cast a mile. so i am casting 200 ft at points in my usual fishing trips. and i run 1/4 oz to 1.5 oz with out adjusting anything. On the scorpions i will adjust between 2 and 3 for brake setting 3 for lighter lure or head wind and 2 most of the time. but i love my 21 scorpions dc's, when retrieving just a lure, you don't feel much difference in smoothness. where i notice a big difference, is when im loaded up with a decent fish, or trying to pull a big bass out of the weeds. then you can feel that the slx is rougher in the drive train under load. the drag is also smoother when being spooled on the scorpion. use the scopion a few more times load it up and you will see it more happy fishing tight lines
Its best you experiment and do what works best for you. Since Im very experienced with DC reels, I want nothing keeping the spool from spinning so I like a slight bit of side to side play
I've got the new curado 200 dc hg model its the jdm version going to take a week to ship it to me so I'm going to watch your videos on how to use it properly without backlash and blow ups I'm putting it on xpride 7'10" medium heavy rod
Some people have told me this reel was meant more for finesse lures do you think it could still handle heavier applications like football jigs or under spins ?
Was at a big name fishing store trying out a Curado DC reel and even with the star drag fully tightened down I wasr readily able to turn the spool - Is this common to the DC reels? If so wouldn't this be a problem when setting the hook? For this reason I held off on purchasing the reel. Can you shed some insight on this?
My cirado dc has 12 pounds of drag an I've never had an issue setting the hook I've snaped 15 pound flouro with my drag all the way so the drag can definitely do the 12 pounds it's rated for
I’ve had my curado DC reel for about two years with constant fishing, I’d say I went out fishing everyday for the past two years with some on and off days.. mine is still perfect as the day I got it! That is definitely not common. I’ve got buddies who all have DCs and theirs don’t do that too. Definitely consider buying them and don’t be scared because of that
Tbh there’s not much different between the scorpion dc and Slx dc xt, besides the spool size if you’re just want to put in terms of general fishing… if you don’t want to get into anything technical side of the spec of both reel
I'm wondering why this SLX base model costs more than or as much as the new 2022 Bantam? Even with the DC system, they priced this SLX on level with a USA Curado DC, and that is taking into consideration the huge discount due to exchange rates right now. It just seems really odd? Thoughts?
I wouldn't consider this a "base" model at all... with the idc5 and mgl3 spool this is far from base. Better question is why did they call it an slx, when it's basically an upgraded 2017 Scorpion dc
very true. this is why I bought a another scorpion dc as it was about 30 bucks more then the slx dc, everything is basically the same, except the frame, is smaller reel and spool is lighter so its a bit better at 1/4 Oz and under. Scorpion 1/4 Oz is about the lowest for good castabillity. both have the IDC 5 brakes same bearings drags. but this slx dc xt has the ugly screw holes on the out side.
what line , what lb line , and g lure ur using on this test? XD might have missed it im tempted to get this .. like now... can u do finesse lur eon this?
you can get in line(preorder)for one with a preorder. mine came from japan tackle. japan lure shop sold out already, may be able to preorder from them still.
If this is one of the lightest dc reels and one of the lightest shimano reels yet you don’t recommend it for jerkbait a what reel would be a better option
Is this the most comfortable DC reel to handle? I find old Metanium pretty bulky. I dont have the biggest hand's and Bantam is like the most comfortable for me.
Pretty impressive, tbh you can’t really cast that far without any issues with exsence dc or antares dc md.i for sure having problems casting even a 10 gr lure with 17 Exsence dc reel using braid Maybe with new 21 antares dc or 22 exsence dc it is doable since these also has mgl3 spool but 1/4ounce lure is difficult with 4x8 dc brake system I think icd5 system is better tuned for light Lures İ wish you have casted a 1 ounce lure for just fun would empty much of the spool i guess ? 😅
It might be the rod you are using in combo with the DC reel. I have several Metanium DCs which is a 2015 reel, zero issues with casting anything until I try to cast a lure outside of the rods sweetspot. I've thrown jerkbaits, topwaters, crankbaits, T-rigs, Jigs, skipping, etc... everything you can imagine with a Met DC. One of my setups I even use it to throw 6" magdrafts... all I've learned is if you are trying to cast something on the low side of the rods capabilities, then that is when you will start having issues. Antares DC 21 on the other hand is flawless and way more forgiving for a DC reel. I've thrown 1/4oz topwaters with it on 30lb braid and a Expride 7'2 ML+ BFS rod... again, the rod is key. The reel can't do it alone. The Antares DC 21 is also the most forgiving DC reel I've used to date when it comes to fluoro. My Met DCs are picky with fluoro.
@@decoyn-7782 I agree , however antares dc 21 is a lot more forgiving then the old exsence dc 17 I think there is a lot design flaws with this reel that’s why they retired it and continue with antares design on new 22 exsence dc 2015 met dc on the other hand I think the best dc reel of shimano for along time one of the most sold dc reels in the market which is like to see a competition of casting distance with this new slx dc xt and conquest 21 dc reels I think I’ll buy the new exsence dc reel since it is identical to antares dc anyway
