- In this video I look at 57 softlocks in Super Mario 64. A Softlock is an inescapable state in a video game where the game hasn't crashed but the only way to proceed is to reset the console.

Super interesting. This is funny because it makes Mario 64 look unplayable or like this happens a lot but majority of people that play for their whole lives have never seen this stuff.
The only softlock I got was when I corrupted the game using the Vinesauce ROM Corrupter.

the 7:38 softlock is interesting, because the effort that's necessary for this (set HOLP in BitS, do hat-in-hand in WDW, clone skeeter without seeing what you're cloning) just to get fall damage to softlock the game.
I guess I gotten pretty lucky to have never experienced this when I was playing Mario N64
It’s actually not lucky at all, man.. I guarantee that over 99% of players have never seen anything like this at all. This is some extremely precise and obscure stuff... the amount of people this happened to naturally, can’t be very many at all.
most of these softlocks have either very specific positionings, movements or camera spamming that people won't do in actual gameplay
The only -gbj- softlock I experienced as a kid was inside the volcano at LLL where a Bully just knocks Mario into a corner for eternity
I like that you used the sound effect for clearing Break The Targets from Smash 64 every time a softlock occurred.

But to explain that, we first need to talk about *P a r a l l e l U n i v e r s e s*
i heard that if you get to the very top of the castle, you get loaded into a BRoD by dropping into a certain part.... it was mentioned that it's easily done with the cannon outside the castle when you get 120 stars...
if that's inescapable, make that soft lock number 58. it's called the "go through the roof glitch"

Great gbj compilation vid. My first softlock that I can remember is actually sly cooper 1 of all things.
I think I got one. In the Japanese version (Not the shindou version) when you collect a coin when you have 999 coins, instead of setting the coins to 999, the lives is set to 999 but since the lives is a byte, it converts to -25 and it will keep setting the lives to -25 until the coin amount is reset (by entering a course). That means if you talk to yoshi when you have more than 999 coins via the moneybag duplicating glitch or collecting the 4 coins in the castle 250 times via re-entering it, you softlock. That's because the lives go up until 100 but since you have more than 999 coins, the lives keep setting itself to -25 and thus, you'll never reach 100 lives. Ever. Until you reset.

Is he going to cover the Japanese-exclusive M25 Lives softlock...? Where getting more than 999 coins gives Mario 999 lives, displayed as "M25", and continually refreshes this ludicrous lives amount every frame, so talking to Yoshi (who gives Mario 100 lives, but with 1000+ coins and M25 lives causes a softlock due to the two conflicting commands) causes an issue?
This must have taken alot of time to make. Keep up the good work. ^^

I have played this game since 2001 as i was 3 to today and even glitch run it frequently and i never experienced this. Well now that i know it exists i am very sure my next playthrough will have one softlock unintentionally. Wish me luck

At least the majority of these are incredibly rare occurrences when casually playing. Most seem to require the player to carefully trigger them. I've personally never encountered a single softlock in SM64, so Nintendo must have done pretty good job overall.

I don't think softlocks are known as "freezes," considering nothing is frozen.
Also, "glitch" is a much broader term, and could be used to describe things as simple as a wall kick which sends you in the same direction as your initial jump, or the "zombie glitch" you mentioned in the video.
You are 100% right I changed it. I mainly did that for search purposes so that if people search up Mario 64 glitch or Mario 64 freezes this video would also pop up.

You could actually softlock yourself at every star box if you use a moon jump cheat.
You missed one, I think: MrJimmySteel25 got infinite bonked on the rim of the BitFS teleport
Edit: The other way to scape that softlocks is use the moon jump cheat
Moon jump is a cheat not in the actual game, so it would be illegitimate
A soft lock I found in the the 3d all stars version (shindou version) I was in place with the entry to tick tock clock and there was a toad and I went into tick tock clock first and when I came out I talked to the toad and he had dialogue but not a star so I was supposed to get the star from toad before tick tock clock so now I can’t 100% the game
