Really cool how the physics from this game are so good it could pretty easily be converted into a downhill-racing game. I know it's been said to death, but it just feels good to move in this game; you can tell they spent a lot of time perfecting the movement.
You heard correctly, @@amacsizbirkisi, there are entire books about it. (Or at least one, maybe more.) _SM64_ is particularly notable, since environmental heights and positions are explicitly based on Mario's various jump heights and movement speeds, which is why everything feels so natural. You can literally look at any climbable wall in the game and figure out what kind of jump(s) you need to reach the top without actually having to think about it, once you learn the basics, since everything is designed to be intuitive. Best example is how the first thing basically everyone tries in Whomp's Fortress is the little double jump skip at the start of the level; you don't know if it'll work, but it just _looks_ like a place you want to double jump. And a lot of floating ledges are positioned so the distance between them is the exact distance that Mario covers in his normal-double-triple jump routine, a lot of areas are designed to give you exactly enough space to side jump (and just the right height to need a side jump), or walls positioned just right to wall jump back & forth between, and so on. The world literally uses Mario's movement abilities as its units of measurement, and feels perfect to play because of it.
I see a lot of people say that the movement holds up in modern day, and that’s always confused me because whenever I pick up the game I find a lot of the movement unbearably clunky and imprecise, especially in levels like Tall Tall Mountain. I can’t be the only one, right? I will say though I love when games give you proper lateral momentum preservation. Too many games halt your momentum when you jump, or don’t let you build enough speed, and this is not one of them.
@HaydenTheEeeeeeeeevilEukaryote maybe it's due to the camera ? I play the game very often and when I fail something it's usually due to me or to the horrible camera
Damn this is such a cool concept. Love the idea of going through every Mario 64 level in slide form like this, and this hack perfectly replicates the feel of those levels in a slide setup to a tee. And if this really is a demo like the hack says it is? Then I'm super excited to see you play the full version too.
This ROM hack demo has a pretty cool concept, I'm honestly looking forward to what the next courses will be like as slides, and it would be even more interesting to see a hack out there that takes various tracks from games like Mario Kart Wii and turn them into slide levels, like I would imagine that DK Summit will be pretty fun, and trying to take that one infamous shortcut especially
The CRTV just brought me back to when I was really young playing sm64 for the first time ever during a time where my family couldn't afford flat screen tv's which were also only starting to gain traction. My monitor is also fucked up atm so the colors, the fact your using the CRTV just brought me some memories I had no idea I'd love so much
This mini-hack looks great! I like the concept and I look forward to seeing the remaining slides when it is finally complete! It also looks like a solid challenge especially with the limited lives! And at least you don't have to worry about collecting any Red Coins in this one! 😋
This reminds me of SM64: Nostalgia stair by Xeraclom14. Not sure if it was officially released or if it just got incorporated into his Lost Dreams hack.
The only easy way is to put it on an SD card and put this rom hack into an Everdrive64 cartridge and pop it in the N64 console. But if ANYone is skilled at porting roms even custom made or programmed games to a cartridge chip, then go ahead...
This looks like a nice, fun game (if you can get used to the mechanics), it's a shame they didn't do Shifting Sand Land though, that one was the one I was looking forward to the most.
The design is genius. Each levels keep the essence of the original one, even by taking small or infamous parts and making it a puzzle or an obstacle. Really good job @jakedower97 !
I love how the characters’ dialogue is in-line with how their personalities are in the original: -King Bob-omb is still cocky and references his love of fighting -Whomp King is still very caring about his land and people -The mama penguin is still worried about her baby -Bowser’s still got that petty cartoon villain vibe -Peach is still at it with her love of baking cakes -And the rest of the characters joke or makes references to their appearance Very well written I must say
You're REALLY bad at pretending this is your first time. Like bro really? "I wanna see what hazy maze cave is like" and half a second in you're just "wow this is so good"
🚫 That's the universal symbol of no/prohibited. I think that just means there was invisible walls there because that what other video games like TF2 use also.
It probably would have been rated a lot worse if you lost all your lives to that one section. Pretty unfair but they did give you just enough lives to get through it.
this felt like the bonus levels we should have gotten after getting all 120 stars
Totally agree. The one thing I always felt was lacking was the amount of slides in m64. There should have been 5-6 and not the 3 we got
Bonus
@@redditor7548 Penguin, Mushroom and...... the secret slide?

Developers of Mario first nail down the movement, and then sculpt the world around that said movement, or so I heard
That's why that's my favourite Mario game, the movements feel nothing like any other game

At this point, why don’t they just make Mario Slide 64: Slide Edition which has slides within slides…
Or like a mario kart version of this game

Shoutouts to the hack creator for using proper grammar!
The standards for that are so low nowadays
That was great! Congratulations on not dying.

Jolly Roger Bay. He made a little oopsie.
Hazy Maze Cave really kicked your butt there; I never saw you so upset, lol
I love how your platforming and camera manipulation were masterful, while proceeding to just ram every obstacle like it owed you money 😂
This mod is so creative. I love this modding community.
