I don't want to seem awful but what if Judy had reached to adulthood? She's a child actress, had an abusive father, and a mother who wanted to live out her dream as an actress through her daughter. Odds are she would've turned out more like Lindsay Lohan or Miley Cyrus rather than someone as well adjusted as Mara Wilson (Matilda). Not to mention she was very short and young looking for her age which could've gotten her bullied a lot if the hormonal injection didn't work or backfired in some way. Especially if she was a teen. +adrian alvarez I never said that her father was justified in killing her. I'm just saying would you still feel bad for Judith if she went the route of Lindsay Lohan, someone who had so much potential that when she start drugs to get rid the stress she was going through along with the fears from her own father. Or Drew Barrymore who also has an abusive father that basically introduced her to drinking and drugs. You'd wag your finger and mock them for doing those things and hate them for wasting themselves when most likely it's them trying to cope with abuse and stress in their lives. I think Judith would have turn to substances had she been alive long enough. She was already displaying signs in her final month of being scared for her life and not having any way of escaping it. +jacoblgames The thing is she and her mom DID see CPS. The thing is, Judith's mom relied on Judy's child acting as their income. He actually met Cera before seeing the Sharptooth, as a clip used showed. The Land Before Time was the most accurate dinosaur movie of its time. While he by no means dislikes the film, Don Bluth credits The Land Before Time with kickstarting his weaker output, as it was his first major exposure to Executive Meddling. Don reportedly burned some of the deleted footage. Makes you wonder just how dark and disturbing some of the deleted footage was. Charlie's an anti-hero and close to a villain protagonist. Yes, those exist. All Dogs Go To Heaven was originally to be based off of the book of the same name that Don read. I think Martin Short should have been Killer. One cut moment is Charlie flying off and then landing in the water. Thankfully they left this part out since it would have just been too funny. Ironically, some critics questioned whether ADGTH should have been G. Nice to know Don Bluth once again pushed the G rating to its limit. Speaking of which, it's no wonder critics preferred The Little Mermaid. It had a significantly lighter tone and was more feel-good.
2:13 Ah...so The Land Before Time was originally slated to be released roughly around the time I was conceived, but because of the studio's relocation to Ireland, it ended up being released when I was just five months old.
In retrospect, the Land Before Time crushed my heart enough as a kid that I really don't think it Needed those extra scenes of the Sharptooth in there. I saw it for the first time when I was 4 or 5, and It still has a lasting impression on me - Everything down to the coloring to the music to the actual way the Sharptooth was animated - Pretty fucking scary when you're that age. I don't even need to mention Littlefoot's mom dying. That's pretty much how I was introduced to the concept of death in general. However, I really do hope that 10 odd minutes of cut footage resurfaces in full, at some point. There's very limited video, pictures and even info on what they exactly cut out - Even then, what you find is cryptic at best. As someone who grew up loving the movie and was severely affected by some of the scenes in it - For nostalgia purposes - I'd really like to see all that cut footage eventually, and see the movie in the original incarnation that Bluth intended for us. Awesome little documentary about Bluth, by the way.
It's of course downright sad that not only have we lost Judith Barsi as Ducky from The Land Before Time but now James Horner too recently who composed the soundtrack for it. A real damn shame both of them died in such awful ways.
I'm one of the few people who likes CERTIAN sequels to Land Before time. none of them are even close to as god as the original, but some have their charm
I’m glad that you handled Judith Barsi’s death very well and let you viewers find out themselves. What her father did to her daughter was so horrible and so messed up, I don’t know where to begin.
Unfortunately, I already knew about Judith Barsi's death before I started watching all ten of Don Bluth's movies. This made watching All Dogs Go to Heaven a major struggle for me. I only got to watch it once for that specific purpose, than I never wanted to see it again. In fact, believe it or not, I would rather watch Rock-A-Doodle than All Dogs Go to Heaven. Not only is Edmund cute, but the voice cast in this movie is very interesting. Personally, I think Rock-A-Doodle would be better off all animated with no live action whatsoever. But no matter if All Dos Go to Heaven is unbearable or if Rock-A-Doodle is more preferred for me, it does not change the fact that The Land Before Time is my #1 favorite animated movie not made by Disney.
I think Bluth should have stuck with Spielberg. Artistically I know it doesn't feel nice having producers make changes to your film, but filmmaking is also a huge collaboration of artists. It's never just one person's accomplishment. The leader of a team (the director in this case) will never have all the right decisions. A leader always needs to take advice from their team. In the end, you have a better movie.Besides, with the exception of Anastasia, Bluth's career did generally go downhill after he parted with Spielberg.
Spielberg was a legendary film director that had made the highest grossing movies ever made to that point. Bluth had made one critically acclaimed but only modestly successful movie at that point. Is it really any surprise that Spielberg was the one who Universal sided with in all decisions? And well they should have. Spielberg had far more experience with moviemaking than Don, and had they kept those additional scary scenes in the movie, it might have scared off audiences and ticket sales instead of becoming the highest grossing animated movie for one year.
At the same time though, too much interference from the wrong people can ruin a movie, and a perfect example of that is Bluth's 90s films. It may be easy to just blame Don for the poor quality of those films, but Don himself claimed there was a LOT of interference (probably a lot more than when he was with Spielberg) by the time he made Rock-a-Doodle, Thumbelina, A Troll in Central Park, etc. Probably because of how bad All Dogs Go to Heaven did at the box office. (It probably didn't help that he was most likely making too many films at once). And yes, while the films he made with Spielberg are some of his best, other films like The Secret of NIMH and maybe All Dogs also show that Don is at his best when he's given more creative control. It just so happens that Spielberg was the right person he came across who can keep productions in check during the 80s, plus his ideas happened to perfectly match with Don's.
@@disneyfan8719 Secret of Nimh worked because it's adaptation of a book. With All Dogs, even Don himself admitted that he struggled to come up with a good script. A writer told him( You have too many angles, too much Heaven. Get out that out, make it a simple Dog story and it will be fine).
As I said in Animat's last video, all three of Don Bluth's good movies got to be on my top 10 favorite Non-Disney Animated Movies. In fact, his last good film The Land Before Time actually is my #1 favorite Non-Disney animated movie of all time. You see, back in my childhood, I was very fond of dinosaurs. I loved to read dinosaur books, visit dinosaur museums, draw dinosaur pictures, and I especially loved to watch dinosaur movies. Therefore, The Land Before Time sequels were among my favorite videos to watch in my childhood. As my love of those sequels grew, they made me able to enjoy the first movie as well. Eventually, as I heard about Don Bluth being The Land Before Time's creator more often, I got more curious to find out who Don Bluth was. So, while I was in college, I decided to watch all ten of Don Bluth's movies in the order of their release, as well as his other animation projects. What this means is, the Land Before Time sequels brought me from loving those videos, to liking the first movie as well, to wanting to know more about Don Bluth, to watching all of his movies, to where I am now, seeing Don Bluth as tied with Walt Disney as the greatest animator to ever work in movies.
I absolutely Love the Land Before Time. It is Amazing. It was the Second Universal Studios Dinosaur movie I ever saw. The first was Jurassic Park, when I was 2.
The full uncut version of All dogs movie was released internationally (at least the spanish one was longer than the one in amazon), i have a VHS version where the car runs over Charlie , after an “oh shit” moment when he realises he’s done, you can literally see the corpse flying in the air, the hell dream have scenes of demons torture and the fire of hell , there is an extra scene at the end. Maybe the “only copy” that he got is the only english language copy of the full movie reel
My thoughts on these movies Land Before Time - Easily one of Don Bluth’s best animated films of all time and one of my very favourite animated movies, since I am fascinated with dinosaurs. All Dogs Go To Heaven - Another Great classic, loved how they casted Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise as Charlie and Itchy, great use of heavy themes and how the concept of hell was used in an appropriate context to acclimatise children into understanding how harsh the world can be. Rock A Doodle - One of my least favourite of the Don Bluth bunch for its child-like tone and a bland premise. This was where his work began to take a downward spiral.
The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and American Tale are my favorite Don Bluth films growing up. Rock-a-Doodle is the last Don Bluth film i saw and it was pretty bad compared to earlier films.
Pauses vid at 3:03 What do you mean the opening of Land Before Time had no point in the movie!? The narration alone set first the time period, "before the Mammoth and the Mastadon in the time of the Dinosaurs." then the conflict, "the leaf eaters vs the meat eaters" and finally the reason for the migration to the Great Valley. "the mighty beasts who appeared to rule the Earth were in truth ruled by the leaf... and the leaves had begun to die." Plus showing the wide variety of dinosaurs and the idea that they only traveled with their own herds was kind of a major subplot to the movie. Sorry to complain, your video is awesome, I just really really love Land Before Time. Anyway back to the video now.
Well...Don Bluth was heavily influenced into getting into animation from seeing Snow White in the theaters when he was four as mentioned in the first part of this lookback, so it's safe to say he decided to incorporate some elements from that film into his animation.
Additionally (because TH-cam has a character limit still, it seems), Walt Disney found the tale of Chanticleer and Reynard too hard to adapt. Also, he and his associates found humans easier to animate. It's actually up to speculation whether Bluth himself or some executive wanted the live-action/animated thing. Chanticleer wasn't originally going to be an Elvis expy, but as the story advanced, after Glen Campbell was brought on, Chanticleer became the Elvis expy seen in the final product. Speaking of Glen, this film really damaged his career. He was made fun of by his fans and he vowed never to appear in film again. Rock-a-Doodle is also Sorrell Booke's (Boss Hogg) final feature film role. Funny thing, Rock-a-Doodle was competing with Beauty and The Beast as well as Fievel Goes West because it was originally released in the UK, for whatever reason. Goldie was actually inspired by Jessica Rabbit, but there may have been influence from Princess Daphne. Her and Chanticleer were going to have more dialogue with each other that included a number of double entendres. Eddie Deezen (Snipes) has never seen this film. He saw the reviews and was all "fuck it I ain't watching this shit." Bluth had to change some potentially scary aspects, such as giving the Grand Duke "Lucky Charm breath" and cutting out a scene of him eating a skunk in a pie. They also made him change wine into "soda" to avoid a PG rating. Incidentally, the Skunk Pie sequence was cut not because the idea of an evil giant owl threatening to eat a live baby skunk in a pie is inherently scary in itself (even though it is). It was cut because of a note Bluth's studio received from the preview audience. The scene was too scary and had to be cut because "most cases of child abuse happen in the kitchen, and involve baking instruments". Considering that the star of his previous film had just recently been murdered by her father, you can understand why he was so quick to cut it. Nostalgia Critic didn't say it best because he, like many others, assumes that Don Bluth had full control over the IPs. As it turns out, Don had little say in what the final product would end up like.
"A movie about dinosaurs that originally had no dialouge but then got dialouge for more money. Where have I heard that before?" Walking With Dinosaurs? *Dinosaur flashes on screen* Dammit, well its nice to see that movie is in obsucrity, where it belongs.
You reviewed 2 of my fav Donbluth films lbt and adgth 😍😍😍😍 it's so ashamed Judith barsi died by her own father did both of my fav Donbluth films as ducky then Anne Marie plus they are both my fav characters too I still watch Donbluth films sometimes when I'm sad I watch both all dogs go to heaven and lbt for friends that i miss. I watched lbt in 2010 day of my field day and I watched all dogs go to heaven when I was a freshmen. All dogs go to heaven now makes me want to have a dog like Charlie
I saw All Dogs Go to Heaven during original release in theaters. My Dad took me.... Same with Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.... Benefit of being an 80s baby 😃
I love Rock-a-doodle! I’m surprised it’s considered the beginning of the bad animation! Rock-a-doodle, Thumbellina, and Fern Gully are some of my favorite childhood films!!!
I heard somewhere that the reason why Don Bluth's movies after All Dogs go to Heaven did badly because he was depressed after Barsi's murder, I don't know if that really was the case.
I wonder if that’s why the main child character in Rock-a-Doodle is a boy named Edmund instead of a girl. I have a feeling the part of Edmund was going to be a girl and played by Judith Barsi, but following her tragic death, the character was rewritten into a boy. I could be wrong, but I just have that feeling.
I think it's quite close enough for Charlie to be in a Hellist nightmare scene instead of the uncut version still I would like to see the uncut version to be release on DVD & Blu-Ray it would be a PG rating if it did but as of 2015 not yet but one day he will.
I recently noticed the footage cut from that scene that has been leaked from a bootleg copy of the original uncut version, though you're unfortunately going to have to deal with low-quality cut footage mixed with the HD footage left intact. The footage that was cut from the film features what appears to be a fourth wall-breaking shot of the Hellhound telling in his ominous voice after swooping down to Charlie that he truly belongs in Hell. th-cam.com/video/Gr7khtV7GAs/w-d-xo.html Luckily Bluth did tweet a high-res screenshot from that footage: twitter.com/DonBluth/status/660659977032474624
Note: When You Talked about the release date of Rock a Doodle, you only talked about the NA release date (Probably because you are from Canada). The movie was already released in Ireland and the UK in August 1991
Quick question for All Dogs go to Heaven fans did anyone notice Charlie said the line 'Damn that Carface I'll kill him' before he notice the clocks? Just asking since AniMat didn't mention while talking about the film.

It seems like almost every don bluth film has one of the cast in their final appearance and dying soon after
I'm blown away by the level of information you put out. I'm subbing because of the effort. keep it up!
It's of course downright sad that not only have we lost Judith Barsi as Ducky from The Land Before Time but now James Horner too recently who composed the soundtrack for it.
A real damn shame both of them died in such awful ways.
Frank G. Wells and Kobe Bryant both died similar to Horner.
She wasn't even able to watch her two films succeed... Both released posthumously.
I still have my stuffed Littlefoot from JCPenney, and still think of him as an old friend
12:30 Wow...it’s not every day you hear Michael Eisner cackling like Thurl Ravenscroft with that maniacal expression!
Rest In Peace Burt Reynolds
(February 11, 1936-September 6, 2018)
"the land before time" was one of my favorite films when i was a kid.
She was killed by her father out of jealousy I should've listened to Animat
Animat, Judith bari's was murdered by her father. She also was on Jaws the revenge. She was a daughter of the Brody family.
BlastedQuinn yeah she should’ve been a part of that family than her actual one
with out the big lip alligator moment who woulda noticed the movie took place in new orleans during mardi gras?
Rest in peace Judith Barsi :(
I think Bluth should have stuck with Spielberg.
I agree. He also helped the former head of Disney animation developed Dreamworks.
But at least fox animation Studios brought them back to their good movie Ways with Anastasia and titan A.E.
Don Bluth is the only director I know who manages to be both too dark AND too sweet for people, sometimes at the same time.
I absolutely Love the Land Before Time. It is Amazing. It was the Second Universal Studios Dinosaur movie I ever saw. The first was Jurassic Park, when I was 2.
Ducky is a Saurolophus, but I'm glad you got most of the dinosaur names right, also, Land Before Time is my favorite movie growing up!!!
Judith did not deserve what happened to her and her mother. No child deserves to be killed by their own father.
Rock-a-doodle: What was the plot again?
RIP to Judith Bars and to you as well Burt Reynolds
You told me I would regret looking up Judith Barsi and you were right.
I'm sure all kids made this joke when they saw All Dogs go to Heaven. "If all dogs go to Heaven, do all cats go to Hell?"
Guilty as charged !
Cartoon logic:No one gets it but it makes sense
My thoughts on these movies
Land Before Time - Easily one of Don Bluth’s best animated films of all time and one of my very favourite animated movies, since I am fascinated with dinosaurs.
This was where his work began to take a downward spiral.
i think what edmunds saying in rock a doodle is "i'm all furry" not "i'm a furry" but thats just what i hear
9:42 her father killed her because of her fame
Is it wrong that as a kid I really loved Rock-A-Doodle? I still feel a good helping of nostalgia for it to this day.
1:23 and then came Walking With Dinosaurs....
Losing my shit at the Little Mermaid mowing Charlie down LMAO
The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and American Tale are my favorite Don Bluth films growing up. Rock-a-Doodle is the last Don Bluth film i saw and it was pretty bad compared to earlier films.
4:42 to 4:53 DJ Khaled: Another one! Another one! Another one! Another one!
Thumbs up if you get that joke. 😂
TLBT was one hell of a childhood, good god we kids were ecstatic about it.
Oh god.......Poor little Judith Barsi.......oh god...
Pauses vid at 3:03
What do you mean the opening of Land Before Time had no point in the movie!? The narration alone set first the time period, "before the Mammoth and the Mastadon in the time of the Dinosaurs." then the conflict, "the leaf eaters vs the meat eaters" and finally the reason for the migration to the Great Valley. "the mighty beasts who appeared to rule the Earth were in truth ruled by the leaf... and the leaves had begun to die."
Plus showing the wide variety of dinosaurs and the idea that they only traveled with their own herds was kind of a major subplot to the movie.
Sorry to complain, your video is awesome, I just really really love Land Before Time.
Anyway back to the video now.
It's so sad actually. I found this out in bobscheaux's review of the movie and I cried for half an hour since I really loved that movie as a kid.
I Love All Dogs go to Heaven and it's sequel and the tv show it's a huge part of my life and the BIG LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT!!!!!!!!!!
I kinda looked up Judith barsi and I was horrified, Why didn’t I listen
Update: a 14th direct-to-video film was made recently in 2016 (I think)
Phil Harris actually died 3 years after rock a doodles release
7:51 *A BIG LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT😂😂😂*
What happened to Judith barsi is that her father murdered her and his wife and then killed himself. Animat was was right that I would regret it.
Judith Barsi, we LOVE you and we miss you and may you rest in peace.
I always thought that all dogs go to heaven was a Disney Movie because I saw the Christmas special on Disney Channel.
Oh the irony…. 😂
HOLY MOTHER I LOOKED UP WHAT HAPPENED TO JUDITH OH MY GOD
I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED
ALL I FEEL IS REGRET
And thus the Dark Ages of Don Bluth begins with Rock a Doodle.
Have you ever noticed Anne Marie from All Dogs Go to Heaven looks pretty similar of Disney's Snow White?
Well...Don Bluth was heavily influenced into getting into animation from seeing Snow White in the theaters when he was four as mentioned in the first part of this lookback, so it's safe to say he decided to incorporate some elements from that film into his animation.
I agree it is pretty much what Snow White looks like as a child
My favorite ones are The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go To Heaven, and Rock-A-Doodle
He saw the reviews and was all "fuck it I ain't watching this shit."
Bluth had to change some potentially scary aspects, such as giving the Grand Duke "Lucky Charm breath" and cutting out a scene of him eating a skunk in a pie.
Hell.
Unrelated trivia: For a fun read, look up how the spikes on the tail of stegosauruses got its name.
even though it did well ($21 million), It was BLOWN OUTTA THE WATER by Disney via The Little Mermaid ($210 Million)
"A movie about dinosaurs that originally had no dialouge but then got dialouge for more money. Where have I heard that before?"
Walking With Dinosaurs?
*Dinosaur flashes on screen*
Dammit, well its nice to see that movie is in obsucrity, where it belongs.
He made this review 2 years before walking with dinosaurs was released
I love rock a doodle despite it's flaws
You should of said what happened to Judith Barsi, I found out a while ago.
My brother went to a college named Coastal Carolina University. Guess what their mascot was.
Chauncey the chanticleer.
Bleed Teal!
Rock-A-Doodle is getting a Blu-ray release from Olive Films on October 31, 2017.
This video is filled with retro memes and I love it!
How is it that you can English names so bad at times and yet your french is the best of any English speaking youtuber ive ever seen.
He’s Canadian
@@carsfan1995 is he from Quebec? Like us he a francophone.
7:51 *BIG LIPPER ALLIGATOR MOMENT😂😂😂*
I saw All Dogs Go to Heaven during original release in theaters. My Dad took me.... Same with Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.... Benefit of being an 80s baby 😃
I heard rock a doodle mgm DVD release is out of print now
I love Rock-a-doodle! I’m surprised it’s considered the beginning of the bad animation! Rock-a-doodle, Thumbellina, and Fern Gully are some of my favorite childhood films!!!
"the nostalgia critic said it best"
OOF.
that didn't age well...
9:52 Is that her in a season 2 episode of "Punky Brewster"? (Please be it! I can only find the first season. She wasn't in the first season. Please!)
11:10 I couldn’t have put it better. That was hilarious lol.
????? ????? I thought it was funny too and agree.
I heard somewhere that the reason why Don Bluth's movies after All Dogs go to Heaven did badly because he was depressed after Barsi's murder, I don't know if that really was the case.
Kae McSpadden Actually Anastasia did very well, but I shorta doubt that's the case.
@@chillplayer1234 I know, but after All Dogs, he had several movies that did badly until Anastasia.
@@hunterolaughlin could be a possibility.
@@hunterolaughlin he did say he had planned to have Barsi in various other projects, so that could be a possibility.
9:42 I think you could've done that bit more delicately.
Agreed
tigris115 how could he have?
Maybe treating the issue with a bit more seriousness.
tigris115 he treated it fine.
Note: Edmond did not say “I’m A furry” he actually said all instead of a as in “I’m all furry"
Why did so many people die after starring in Don Bluth films
I think it's quite close enough for Charlie to be in a Hellist nightmare scene instead of the uncut version still I would like to see the uncut version to be release on DVD & Blu-Ray it would be a PG rating if it did but as of 2015 not yet but one day he will.
+JamesTheBrony I heard that Don lost the cut version of that scene.
McKenzie Eby It depends.
I recently noticed the footage cut from that scene that has been leaked from a bootleg copy of the original uncut version, though you're unfortunately going to have to deal with low-quality cut footage mixed with the HD footage left intact. The footage that was cut from the film features what appears to be a fourth wall-breaking shot of the Hellhound telling in his ominous voice after swooping down to Charlie that he truly belongs in Hell. th-cam.com/video/Gr7khtV7GAs/w-d-xo.html
Luckily Bluth did tweet a high-res screenshot from that footage:
twitter.com/DonBluth/status/660659977032474624
Note: When You Talked about the release date of Rock a Doodle, you only talked about the NA release date (Probably because you are from Canada). The movie was already released in Ireland and the UK in August 1991
Rip Judith barsi :(
Quick question for All Dogs go to Heaven fans did anyone notice Charlie said the line 'Damn that Carface I'll kill him' before he notice the clocks? Just asking since AniMat didn't mention while talking about the film.
the "damn" is said in the soundrack
I LOVED rockadoodle as a kid. It’s a shame it panned so hard.
Happy 30th birthday to my favorite animated film of all time:All Dogs Go To Heaven!
oh,animat,you were right !
