    When Ed Catmull was a kid, he loved Disney films and he dreamed of becoming an animator when he grew up. But he realized that he had no talent in drawing so he became a computer software designer, but his ultimate goal in life was to make the first completely computer animated film. Lo and behold, over 20 years after making his first bit of computer animation of his left hand, Catmull produced Toy Story, and the rest is history.

      +Miles Bockelman it's a nice story and all but honestly, if we were to believe every one of those out here, we'd really be stretching reality by a long shot. if you ever become successful, you'll find a way of making it look like it had been your destiny since childhood. if i ever become a big director, would it be true if i said i had wanted it for a long time? sure! but then again, i've wanted to be a bajillion other things as well...

    I'm so glad they made Woody the way he is now. He's my ultimate Disney/Pixar character EVER! Thank you Tom Hanks for voicing him! I would have cried if they made him the way they had planned to in the beginning. Toy Story movies are the best, in my opinion.

    Pixar is so important to me. I grew up in the early 2000's when Disney was at its lowest so none of their movies were worth seeing in theater's. (The exceptions being Emperors New Groove and Lilo and Stitch.) So Pixar and Dreamworks made up for it. (Especially Pixar, Finding Nemo really helped me when my Papaw was in and out of the hospital and his death.) So thank you Pixar for being there for me when Disney couldn't. Y'all truly made my childhood.

      yotsubafanfan Pixar is owned by Disney, so Disney wasn't really at their lowest. To be fair though, Disney would be nothing by now if it wasn't for Pixar.

    • @yotsubafanfan
      @yotsubafanfan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      FardintheCartoonLover It was Walt Disney feature animation at the time and Disney didn’t buy Pixar until 2007. Disney didn’t take in Pixar until 2007 so Pixar was still it’s own thing.

      I do think that the Disney movies of the early 2000s are a bit underrated. Sure they aren't as good as the ones of the 90s (especially the earlier part of the 90s), but they were still pretty decent and they were at least experimenting with some new ideas (they didn't always work, but when they did, the results were usually good). Still, I can't deny that during the latter part of the 90s, Pixar was growing as an animation company, while Disney was starting to decline in quality. By 1999, it was clear that Pixar had surpassed Disney. Throughout the 2000s, Disney was in a bit of a Dark Age (until the Princess and the Frog), while Pixar and Dreamworks were dominating the animation industry. However, Pixar seems to have declined a bit in recent years. There hasn't really been a really good Pixar film since Toy Story 3. They've all ranged from okay (Brave, The Good Dinosaur) to just plain bad (the Cars sequels). Disney on the other hand seems to have picked up in quality since 2009. My only gripe is that they seem to be only doing CGI animation now. Not to mention movies like Frozen and Moana are highly overrated. I don't know, mainstream animation in general seems to be in a slow period in the 2010s.

I've always thought I outgrew it many years back and thought it was for babies since I was growing up and getting older and as a little lad, I watched this movie hardcore. But after re-watching it in 2009 and I was 14 at the time I revisited it, not only have I fallen in love with the movie all over again, but it became one of my all time favorite films again and it remained one of my personal favorites eversince.

    What a coincidence how history recently repeated itself when Disney was making Zootopia similarly darker and edgier (you know, with Nick Wilde being more of a d**k and the shock collars and all...), but with the help of the guys that brought us Wreck-it Ralph (particularly Rich Moore), they changed it so much for the better. My two favourite modern-Disney films of all time wouldn't have been what they are now, if it weren't for this smart move.

      Not really, Pixar has made more classics than dreamworks. How to Train your dragon is great but it's one of the only things Dreamworks has done right. Dreamworks makes good movies sometimes (Shrek, Madagascar, HTTYD) but sometimes they make shit (Antz, Sharkstale, Shrek 3 and 4, Bee Movie). When Pixar makes classic after classic. (Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Wall - E, Up,) So people love Pixar for being consistent and original.

    9:50 Aha, I knew he was going to base the the film’s story off of his personal experiences! Now that I mention it, I figure that John later on realized it was a bad idea to abandon his Casper in favor of his GI Joe, so he eventually decided to treat the latter as a companion to the former instead of a replacement, much like how Buzz and Woody were finally considered companions at the end of the first installment and in the later installments.

    I have been waiting to see this day come ever since I first saw Animation Lookback a while ago... and the wait to this very day was all worth it. I loved learning the history about one of my favorite Animation studios and how they managed get lucky in their early years and become the major success they are today. I thank you, Matt, for putting time and research into this project and I cannot wait to see how the rest of the lookback turns out. I'm waiting for Part Two! :)

    14:26 While in the US that's true, Worldwide However, Toy Story was the SECOND highest grossing film of 1995. That Year, the highest grossing film worldwide was the 20th Century Fox Action Sequel "Die Hard With A Vengeance".

    PIXAR is definitely the best animation studio on the planet, with Dreamworks being either second or tied for first. Both animation studios have made some pretty amazing movies like Up, How to Train Your Dragon, Toy Story, Prince of Egypt, The Incredibles and Shrek, but they have also had those awkward ones in the mix like Cars, Antz, Cars 2, and Shrek 4. So while both studios are amazing and always pushing the limits on animation, I do believe that PIXAR does their work with more heart.

    Nobody ever talks about this, but did you notice that some of the older Pixar short films and movies, like Tin Toy, are much more stylized and detailed than Pixar's newest films, like Toy Story 3. I'll give you an example, did you ever notice how in The Adventures Of Andre And Wally B., Luxo Jr., Red's Dream, Tin Toy, Knick-Knack, and Toy Story are much better at casting shadows, reflections, shadings, and textures, than some of the newer Pixar films, where they look a little generic and kinda typical for a computer animated movie. And yes, I know some of the animation for the films I just mentioned are kinda dated. But, given their time period, it's, and I mean this literally, shocking that some of the older ones are more pleasant to look at, than the newer ones. I don't know, I could be wrong, but it's just my opinion. I'm not bashing anyone's opinion here.
