His "village" wasn't a place, it was his people. The purpose of a village is mercenary work and defending the borders of your feudal lord's nation. He can easily accomplish both of these without having a giant town as your headquarters. Also he is the only one with an actually HIDDEN village

Fr though, I agree with you, the 'Sound Village' was just Orochimaru's lab and his subjects, no reason to believe it needs to be a village like the others we were introduced to. Much like Kabuto, it was comprised of people who either felt disenfranchised by their home village, or just straight up captives like Karin and Suigetsu.
The sound village was also the last time that we saw jutsu that were village specific. Like when we are first introduced to Zabuza he's a master of the hidden mist jutsu which is obviously a technique specifically from the hidden mist village. Team Dosu all have really cool sound based abilities because they are from the sound village but after them that whole concept just dies and it's kind of a shame.
Well they all 'cheated' and use tools so theory wise it wasn't a village thing. Sure anyone from a different village *could* learn the other techniques as well but their abilities were not element locked. Which I guess Gates and a few others are not as well. But those are called "hiden" jutsus from clans. Just closed-group kept techniques.
It is actually kinda weird because there are plenty of sound based concepts that would make cool jutsu. Perhaps a taijutsu specialist with Swift Release who can create sonic booms with the sheer speed of his movements. Or alternatively a mute shinobi who uses deadly sound waves the human ear can’t hear coming. A third shinobi could use a giant summoning bird in the form of a falcon which can make dive bomber style attacks with screaming blasts. Humans have such a developed throat that a shinobi can change the frequency to destroy specific objects like a glass floor. Sound can also travel through water so we might see a secret whale type communications allowing shinobi or clones to coordinate over long distances.

I’m still sad the sound village was pretty much forgotten about after part 1 team dosu’s sound attacks were cool and it felt like dosu was gonna be setup as a relevant character but then he gets killed off 🫠
I always assumed the Zaku flashback where he meets Orochimaru after stealing the bread happened in the Sound Village, implying it is an actual above ground village with buildings and citizenry and commerce, etc. This may have even been the intention at the time the concept of the Sound village was introduced, but one could easily interpret that as having happened elsewhere I suppose.
It was probably the same hideout next to konoha seen in part 1, before shipudden retconned it to orochimaru having multiple hideouts and the sound being more of a collective of cities and islands than a real village that only had a few towns.
Dosu was such a cool ninja. It makes me sad that he was one shot by Gaara. He could’ve been an excellent addition to the naruto cast. The fact that he was bandaged up, means that he was shrouded in mystery. They could’ve done a lot with him from a writing perspective.

Orochimaru is the definition of extra in the Naruto universe. Prodigy gifted ninja, sacrificed everything to succeed, joined the akatsuki, created his own village, assassinates the hokage, uses forbidden jutsu, dies multiple times, experiments on hundreds of people, always swapping bodies, creates new jutsus, scraps projects that permenantly alter subjects bodies, has backup plans imbedded into his backup plans, comes back to life in the finale, claims he did it all for the safety of the leaf village, does a complete 180 and is a good guy now. like cmon man
Orochimaru is always an interesting point in the larger lore. Because you see him make a lot of things that could be so good and revolutionary but because he’s...I mean he’s him. A village that relies on trust and not birth is something that it almost seems like Naruto would have done in different circumstances. It's Naruto's thing, Zabuza, Gaara, Konan, in a different story they could have all become 'Naruto's' if he had tried. But because Naruto is mostly fine with the village system it's more Orochimaru's thing now and his version is twisted and cruel.
Konan wouldn't have unless Nagato was not the focus from Madara all actually requiring the story to me just enough the same for them to become "protags". I as a Zabuza fan would believe that of him; he was also a beast, however he would have most if anything saved the Mist from tyrant rule as he was always a hero labeled a villain by yet again the current main story. Gaara for sure as he had some of the same potential with the beast in him. But if Orochimaru's advancements had been world wide and they were at a different level of advancement(like current AtlA chapters) most likely would have had their story potential squashed and not connected to the "new world" rules.
Orochimaru is smart enough to know what people want and what will work and then he uses that information to manipulate those around him. An absolute monster
Orochimaru got away with everything lol. Returned to life in the final war, and by the end of the manga lives a peaceful life in his own lab doing his own thing. In the anime he was even invited to Naruto's wedding lmao.

The sound village in parts 1 and 2 was more of an organization than village Hideouts and labs spread throughout the land and those that allied or subjected themselves to Orochimaru for reasons, like the Fudo clan that own some land. By Boruto, it became a proper village that hasn’t been seen yet. It was meant to be a “village” for ninja that want to pursue their own goals without being hindered by the politics and war of the 5 Great Nations.
Orochimaru is the only character currently alive in the manga, that has been the kage for two different villages. The sand, and he created the sound wich is a Canon village in the Boruto manga.

I wish we had gotten a sort of side quest about the hidden sound, the unique kekkei genkais that orochimaru gathered. I would petitioned team guy and Kimimaro be the drivers of that subplot, to make the sound village a legitimate village. I think that'd be cool.

Sound Village, Danzo's foundation, MIst village under obito are good examplbes of early Naruto's interpretation of what shinobis are meant to be: tools of war and deception. It was great for world building, mystery and intrigue.
I still remember when young Naruto asked Kakashi sincerely if Zabuza was telling the truth. If Ninja really are just tools to be used and thrown away. Kakashi looked at Naruto and said yup. That’s the one thing zabuza wasn’t capping about.
Honestly I wanted more of that and got disappointed. When they introduced the rank system I imagined Naruto would become an S-rank jonin or something like that, and the story would go there and maybe deal with more intrigue and probably rebelling against the system that exploits shinobis, but NOPE... The story I imagined is way cooler than what I ended up reading... Or at least has more ninja stuff...

Orochimaru is one of the most interesting characters of the series. While he is Kage-Level strong, he does not seem to have the godlike powers of later enemies - but in oppostion to them, he is still alive, still standing. What I dont like or more so think is underdeveloped is his switch in Boruto. Im not even against idea of him turning somewhat "good" but we are talking about someone who held hunderts of prisoners, tortured them, killed innocent people - even children - left and right, not to mention the third Hokage...How? How can he just walk around in Konoha like that? I dont like that they made him comic relief basicaly. If he would stay in the sound village and actually make it a decent village, putting in the work, protecting its people and foster a generation of new good ninjas who can take part at the exams and all Id say: Ok, thats an interesting idea. And characters from the other villages are somewhat obligated to interact with him as a leader but the relationship stays sort of suspicious.
I think the name could've worked if the "village" was actually in the middle of a huge busy city, effectively hiding their presence in the "sound" made by the metropolitan area.

Not going to even watch this as from the comments I can tell it was not discussed.. Hidden Sound was a web of multiple independent countries Orochimaru had taken over. "Hidden Sound" as the use for entering a controlled "world" government organized event(like the Olympics) they may need a lot of proof of their existence. It would be safe to assume he also took over a country that was already primed this much. (much like a daiymo controlled Grass) He definitely for sure took over at least enough of a "country" to have a capital to enter the Chuunin exams. Now I won't even mention how you get more information about this with Boruto and how Hidden Sound was reconsecrated as an actual City-State. Implying that it has a capital or centralized location other then a collection of 'hideouts.'
Why.. Mist is in a misty area and the ninja use techniques in regards for of course obvious reasons.. Not everyone in the Konoha was a "leaf" user. It was a Uchiha thing to use fire and they were one of the two founders and let alone the entire nation is called the fire nation..
That would honestly be the deadliest weapon in their universe. Nothing can block it out aside from wind. Even if the opponent doesn't "hear" the sound, soundwaves can still interfere with cognitive functions via affecting the brain.

Sound Vilkage is a prime examle of Kishimoto dropping one idea for another. While i will always enjoy the story we got i cant help but look at the start and really just wonder why so much was left on the floor by him. So many ninja and ideas forgotten and at least to me it feels like we got power crept so hard in Naruto that little ideas like the Sound just couldnt be fleshed out over the circle jerk of Naruto and Sasuke just trading powerups.
Since the other nations saw it as one, then it has to be a village. Orochimaru first of all would have to have a lot of money to keep it functioning and to keep the various clans happy, because not everyone's a ninja. Since he is a villain, it is appropriate to show us the shady part of the village. Maybe since there were less jobs available more people were trafficked to him to gain money and that is how he gained his test subjects.
Idea for a naruto game: While the great 4th ninja war is going on its your job to just run around and loot all the shinobi world of sick justus so that if the baddies loose(which they do) ppl can perhaos have normal lives again

A poor village has high crime which encourages more crime to make a quick buck, affecting those too poor to become rich and making the few rich ones more poor which in turn only makes both of them desperate enough to commit crimes to each other and then it's just a circle spiraling with darker lines each time obserbed.

A village that relies on trust and not birth is something that it almost seems like Naruto would have done in different circumstances. It's Naruto's thing, Zabuza, Gaara, Konan, in a different story they could have all become 'Naruto's' if he had tried. But because Naruto is mostly fine with the village system it's more Orochimaru's thing now and his version is twisted and cruel.
Konan wouldn't have unless Nagato was not the focus from Madara all actually requiring the story to me just enough the same for them to become "protags". I as a Zabuza fan would believe that of him; he was also a beast, however he would have most if anything saved the Mist from tyrant rule as he was always a hero labeled a villain by yet again the current main story. Gaara for sure as he had some of the same potential with the beast in him. But if Orochimaru's advancements had been world wide and they were at a different level of advancement(like current AtlA chapters) most likely would have had their story potential squashed and not connected to the "new world" rules.
Orochimaru is smart enough to know what people want and what will work and then he uses that information to manipulate those around him. An absolute monster

Orochimaru got away with everything lol. Returned to life in the final war, and by the end of the manga lives a peaceful life in his own lab doing his own thing. In the anime he was even invited to Naruto's wedding lmao.

Hideouts and labs spread throughout the land and those that allied or subjected themselves to Orochimaru for reasons, like the Fudo clan that own some land.
By Boruto, it became a proper village that hasn’t been seen yet.
It was meant to be a “village” for ninja that want to pursue their own goals without being hindered by the politics and war of the 5 Great Nations.
I am sure all of them got bodied in Shippuden, we never saw anybody except Kabuto and Team Hebi
Orochimaru is the only character currently alive in the manga, that has been the kage for two different villages. The sand, and he created the sound wich is a Canon village in the Boruto manga.

Sound Village, Danzo's foundation, MIst village under obito are good examplbes of early Naruto's interpretation of what shinobis are meant to be: tools of war and deception. It was great for world building, mystery and intrigue.
I still remember when young Naruto asked Kakashi sincerely if Zabuza was telling the truth. If Ninja really are just tools to be used and thrown away. Kakashi looked at Naruto and said yup. That’s the one thing zabuza wasn’t capping about.
Honestly I wanted more of that and got disappointed.
When they introduced the rank system I imagined Naruto would become an S-rank jonin or something like that, and the story would go there and maybe deal with more intrigue and probably rebelling against the system that exploits shinobis, but NOPE... The story I imagined is way cooler than what I ended up reading... Or at least has more ninja stuff...

Orochimaru is one of the most interesting characters of the series. While he is Kage-Level strong, he does not seem to have the godlike powers of later enemies - but in oppostion to them, he is still alive, still standing.
What I dont like or more so think is underdeveloped is his switch in Boruto. Im not even against idea of him turning somewhat "good" but we are talking about someone who held hunderts of prisoners, tortured them, killed innocent people - even children - left and right, not to mention the third Hokage...How? How can he just walk around in Konoha like that? I dont like that they made him comic relief basicaly.
If he would stay in the sound village and actually make it a decent village, putting in the work, protecting its people and foster a generation of new good ninjas who can take part at the exams and all Id say: Ok, thats an interesting idea. And characters from the other villages are somewhat obligated to interact with him as a leader but the relationship stays sort of suspicious.
I think the name could've worked if the "village" was actually in the middle of a huge busy city, effectively hiding their presence in the "sound" made by the metropolitan area.

Not going to even watch this as from the comments I can tell it was not discussed.. Hidden Sound was a web of multiple independent countries Orochimaru had taken over. "Hidden Sound" as the use for entering a controlled "world" government organized event(like the Olympics) they may need a lot of proof of their existence. It would be safe to assume he also took over a country that was already primed this much. (much like a daiymo controlled Grass) He definitely for sure took over at least enough of a "country" to have a capital to enter the Chuunin exams.
Now I won't even mention how you get more information about this with Boruto and how Hidden Sound was reconsecrated as an actual City-State. Implying that it has a capital or centralized location other then a collection of 'hideouts.'

Why.. Mist is in a misty area and the ninja use techniques in regards for of course obvious reasons.. Not everyone in the Konoha was a "leaf" user. It was a Uchiha thing to use fire and they were one of the two founders and let alone the entire nation is called the fire nation..
That would honestly be the deadliest weapon in their universe. Nothing can block it out aside from wind. Even if the opponent doesn't "hear" the sound, soundwaves can still interfere with cognitive functions via affecting the brain.

Sound Vilkage is a prime examle of Kishimoto dropping one idea for another. While i will always enjoy the story we got i cant help but look at the start and really just wonder why so much was left on the floor by him. So many ninja and ideas forgotten and at least to me it feels like we got power crept so hard in Naruto that little ideas like the Sound just couldnt be fleshed out over the circle jerk of Naruto and Sasuke just trading powerups.

Since the other nations saw it as one, then it has to be a village. Orochimaru first of all would have to have a lot of money to keep it functioning and to keep the various clans happy, because not everyone's a ninja.
Since he is a villain, it is appropriate to show us the shady part of the village. Maybe since there were less jobs available more people were trafficked to him to gain money and that is how he gained his test subjects.
Idea for a naruto game:
While the great 4th ninja war is going on its your job to just run around and loot all the shinobi world of sick justus so that if the baddies loose(which they do) ppl can perhaos have normal lives again
What if Diddymaru was a rogue nin from Kumo/Cloud who founded the "Predator Village"? Sasuke decides to go there instead of Sound Village. Orochimaru, Naruto, Itachi, and Jiraiya actually had to work together and step in to rescue Sasuke?
