Why The Rain Village Is So Insanely High Tech?

  • The Rain Village is different from any other place in the Naruto world. Unlike the Leaf Village, Sad Village, Mist Village, Cloud Village, and Stone Village, the Mist Village has tall skyscrapers made of metal tubes and pipes. The skyline is much higher than any other village which is weird. We mostly saw the village during the Jiraiya vs Pain fight.
The Land of Rain was the battlefield for the first three Ninja Wars in the Naruto series. So how is the Rain Village so insanely high tech? Is it because of Pain? Nagato became the leader of the Rain Village after defeating Hanzo of the Salamander, the former leader of the Rain Village. Let's find out how the Rain Village was built.

What does Jiraiya's timeline as a student and mentor look like?
I assume Nagato, Yahiko and Konan are younger than Minato but older than Kakashi, Obito and Rin.

The Uchiha"s were pressured by the rest of the village's clans and they were going to stage a coup.
The third went through a lot during his years as a hokage and his students were in disarray.
The Hyugas didn't have the best relationship with the hokages and probably kept every citizen that wasn't an adequate shinobi at arms length.
Itachi Uchiha was one the only prior ninja to be considered for the position of hokage and he was aligned with the Akatsuki.
Twelve year old Naruto with no constant familiars or dependable friends within the same village.
I watched a video actually explaining other villages and I think the village hidden in the Leaves is the second most ninja adjacent village among the five great nations.

It always interested me what the Akatsuki duos were mainly used for outside of Jinchudiki hunting. From what I know, I can guess Hidan and Kakuzu were tasked with being the primary earners for the organization, mostly going around and collecting bounties. Sasori and Deidara seemed to be the strong arm team, essentialy the enforcers. They were sent to go kill Orochimaru, and I'm sure they were the ones sent on missions requiring great destruction, Also Sasori's network of spies likely allowed the organization to be informed and track down people they were looking to kill. And itachi and Kisame probably found themselves running special operations for the organization, I say this because they went along with Sasori to recruit Deidara, they infiltrated the Leaf village in part 1 and gauged the strength and capabilities of top shinobi both pre and post timeskip. Both of them are Spies and both are the only 2 of the 3 main duos to know Pain isn't the true leader it's Obito, or Madara to them. However Obito knew Kisame was loyal to him while Itachi was a Leaf spy, so he likely sent them on missions that Itachi wouldn't personally hinder. And even when he did Kisame would be there to tell him what happened and he can figure out from there what Itachi was like trying to or not trying to do, creating a balance mission to mission for the two. I just find the organizations dynamic as a whole interesting, and a missed opprotunity not being expounded upon. Like Hidan and Kakuzu could have ran a criminal organization on the side as a means for revenue for the Akatsuki. That could have given Shikamaru a brief detective arc before the revenge arc.

I think Kowloon was one inspiration behind the Rain Village - a lot of poor people building their dystopian looking multistore fortress

I theorize that the Rain Village is so high-tech (and that Naruto has such inconsistency in its technology level) because the world of Naruto takes place in a distant, post-apocalyptic future where there used to be something at least similar to the modern world (or possibly even the futuristic worlds present in Gundam and Macross series), but it was destroyed in a cataclysm. Hell I think that it would be really interesting world-building for one or more characters to unearth a buried stockpile of assault rifles, or a tank, or a jet, or a car, or even a giant mech like a Gundam or something.

    • @calvinstraveldreams
      @calvinstraveldreams 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

In fact, I would even theorize that Naruto takes place on post-apocalyptic Strangereal (the fictional world where most Ace Combat games take place) given the similarity in shape and size between the Naruto continent and Usea (or perhaps Anea) (there are differences, but they can be understood to be due to either plate tectonics, floods, erosion, or meteorites---whereas the differences between the Naruto continent and any continents on real Earth are too big to be explained by either plate tectonics, floods, erosion, or meteorites), as well as the fact that in Ace Combat games, everyone refers to the planet as Earth--and I presume Naruto characters do as well given the use of the term "Earth Release." Given that both Ace Combat and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm are owned by Bandai Namco, this opens the possibility of a Bandai Namco shared universe, with possible crossovers with Ace Combat, Ridge Racer, and even Gundam (for instance, imagine Sasuke during his travels discovering the remnants of the Stonehenge superweapon, or a buried Gundam, or a garage full of the cars from various Ridge Racer games).

Onoki was 81 in Shippuden, and the stone village was created after the leaf village. So the village system was created around 80 years before the events of Naruto Shippuden.

It's more of the reason that the villages are the military force of a nation. It's more apt to say they are military bases with cities maybe growing around it. Even the numbers of the combined villages make no sense. The "villages" are just one spot on the map and we literally see how big they are. So it's obvious the author sucks at explaining what he's created or, he is hiding other population centers. Which we actually see in fillers. Tons of villages and cities and stuff. More than likely the village is just a traditional name and they have way more locations. The major ones we see are the equivalent of the pentagon.

In my personal opinion Kishimoto based the Rain Village of Singapur, thanks to a certain ruler they manage to grow and become one of the most safe and tecnological states in the world.

I think Pain being the one who created the rain village is probably the most likely, but it's interesting that there are other instances of modern buildings that all seem to be abandoned ruins. Almost like there was some more advanced civilization even before the warring states period that collapsed long before the start of the series.

  • @HonkaiHistory
    @HonkaiHistory 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Nagato used Akatsuki as mercenaries, probably making a ton of money by basicly selling the strengh to determine the outcome of whole armed conflicts. If you combine that with a country, where it rains a ton, which is basicly free energy if you put turbines in all those drainining pipes, you get all resources needed for rapid development. As for the amount of workers required: I don't know whats the population of the village, so it's hard to make guesses, but I think pains powers and in general ninja powers likely played a role in it. I mean certain kekkai genkais such as wood style can create multistory buildings in a few seconds. So I wouldnt be surprised if someone like pain, who has control over all 5 base elements and control over the paths, including a mecha path and a path that can summon the king of hell, which can restore and create things, would have access to abilities to accellarate things alot.
Lastly, I think that this is a bit like the situation in n. korea, where Nagato wants his country to appear properous and rich to the other nations after what they have done to it, so he starts to overcompensate and builds multiple high tech looking skyscrapers, the bigger the better, even though the majority of them are empty because the population hasn't grown that fast yet.

That's a pretty interesting take! my headcanon is that the village appears larger due to mass migration of refugees escaping war from the wartorn countryside. I imagine those buildings are actually shanty and of lower quality of living than one might expect in wealthier nations. It reminds me of Kowloon a little. Regardless, I love the Rain Village

There's flashback episodes in the anime, and specifically in episode 348 "the new Akatsuki", where we actually see that the rain village has always been so developed even in the past before Yahiko ever died, when Danzo tricked Hanzo into destroying the Akatsuki. We also know that the hidden village is the only one with technological advancement like that in the hidden rain, because in every flashback from Jiraya training the kids and those before from Nagato when his parents died, all the architecture we see is normal. What we do see that's technologically advanced is Hanzo himself with his metal gas mask/helmet and retractable scythe. Imo Hanzo was the one that built up the city to begin with but of course, being such a small nation, he didn't want to share his tech with the rest of the world, or other villages would take then on, develop even further and fully destroy the rain afterwards in their wars to come. I believe Hanzo did that to protect the village and its citizens during wartimes because it's obviously harder to destroy metal skyscrapers than it is brick and wood.
I DO believe though that Nagato built that giant head himself. We see it has Rinnegan and he is considered a god, whereas Konan is known as the angel. We also know that the Rain Tiger at Will technique is what detects strong chakra signatures and is disguised as constant rain. I think Nagato gave the tongue head itself the Rinnegan to watch over the village and together with the rain, they basically know everything that ever goes on within the village. So my assumption is that due to that, they are called god and angel, as opposed to because of what they've done for the village.
The village was ALWAYS serious about protecting itself with the Susanoo clones that used to be in the village until the fourth Amekage retired, and the village walls and gates being made of Kōton steel, as well as the ANBU that immediately join at the gate whenever a strong chakra signature is being detected by the rain surrounding the village.

I've always say the Rain Village like the small Gulf Nations; very rich in natural resources, small in area, each has one city, and same style of government as well as the attitude tward the leader is one of gratitude and reverence!
The parts of the Land of Water where the fighting takes place are scarcely inhabited as most people live in the Rain Village, probably because the other smaller villages were destroyed in the wars.

Something that amazes me about the rain village is combination of megalophobia, thalassophobia, submechanophobia, and monophobia: fear of gigantic things, the deep sea, human-made submerged objects, and isolation.
The sense of loneliness and danger that comes from being stuck between the naturally deadly waters and those gigantic unmovable iron structures that humans made to control and stay the F away from those waters...
Two episodes solidify this sense of loneliness between those two opposing forces:
    1. Jiraya vs Pain. You're inside a gigantic building full of pipes and giant deformed animals with psychopathic eyes who want to devour you, and no humans around to help you.
Then in the final scene, you're outside of that building, there's only water, you're on the wrong side of the giant steep wall that was made to protect the city from the water you're swimming in, and you can feel that you don't belong here as a human as there is almost no ground to step on, even Pains are standing on random pipes like the floor is lava. It's unsafe, you need to head back into the city, or you will die alone. Which is what makes the outcome of this fight so freaking depressing and it would be even more tragic if the frog hadn't survived to tell the exploits of Jiraya. Even Kishimoto agrees with me, as he pans over to Naruto and Tsunade chilling in the nature, as Jiraya fades into darkness, they get distracted, they feel something is off, but they don't know what. Jiraya is trying to give them signs but no one can hear him. 😭
    2. Konan vs Tobi: the place where she brings him is just haunting, my nightmare as a social and terrestrial creature. We don't even know how far it is from the city but we can see a few pipes sticking out of the ocean, the only spot where they can rest their feet (till they learn how to fly like it's DBZ), we don't know why those giant pipes are there in the middle of the sea, where they lead (remember submechanophobia), how old they are, or if they're still functional. It's desolate. Konan is brave for choosing such a lonely place, knowing she might not return alive. No one will hear you die here, no one will find your body...
To make matters worse, she splits the sea and creates a ravine into hell and no one notices the cataclysmic change she's made to the planet, that's how far they were from the city.
It reminds me of other media that use these fears of giant human-made objects, deep sea and loneliness.
    - The ship in Little Nightmares, you're tiny and it's giant, makes scary echoing metal sounds, is surrounded by unwelcoming water, and if you fall, no one will notice, no one will save you. Life will go on.
    - The facility in Inside, another disturbing platform game where you are alone against evil adults. Notably that part where you hide from that mysterious shock wave generator. It's automated, unstoppable, you don't know why it's there, and it does not care if you're in its path when it sends a shock wave while you cross the bridge.
    - The short movie Curve, where a woman wakes up sitting uncomfortably on some mysterious gigantic metal structure, on the brink of falling into the abyss.
    - Real life events: OceanGate's submersible that imploded kilometers deep in the ocean so close to the Titanic, with no human remains found.
    - That student who jumped off a cruise ship as a dare in 2023, at night, in a shark-infested ocean, never found, as the gigantic ship kept moving forward at high speed.

As a huge connoisseur of cyberpunk anime and aesthetics, the village hidden in the rain definitely does look a lot like the Ghost in the Shell universe. This village in particular looks specifically like a city in ghost in the Shell movie INNOCENCE called Northern Frontier. I truly believe Kishimoto got inspired from this. If ya’ll want to see exactly what I mean look up Ghost in the Shell 2 parade. Pretty dope tbh. Also, in the last few seconds of that ghost in the Shell parade sequence there’s a tower with a dragon statue, I am almost certain that kishimoto took inspiration from that too, and replaced that dragon with the weird face with the tongue sticking out, I’d bet money on it lol.

I think the whole City is powered by the power or energy of water and with the constant rain engulfing the whole city, they also need an oversized water management system to keep things a float (literally) Also it is still a Ninja Village. The pipes and the back rooms making good places for clandestine meetings, undetected movements, etc. etc.

There might have been another kekkei genkai user with a similar ability that let them collect metal from the ground and/or water (probably more likely water due to the sheer amount of metal needed and the amount of water and rain in the village). And that shinobi had large chakra reserves and/or lots of time to build those buildings - that's what Hashirama did to build Konoha's structures (using wood release).
