The spiders in this film were actually New Zealand spiders and are actually harmless, although still quite creepy. The "General" nicknamed Big Bob, was actually created by Jamie Hyneman, co-star of the tv show Mythbusters. The spiders were well cared for and not a single one was harmed during the making of this film.

Specifically, the little spiders in the film were Avondale spiders from Auckland. I am an arachnophobe too and I am very glad that the only poisonous to humans spider native to NZ is the nearly extinct Katipo that lives in beach side sand dunes, The last fatality from one was in the 1960's. Even if they bite a person it is not usually fatal. A victim needs to be a very young child or have major health problems to succumb to a bite. I'm told that more recently a few colonies of Australian poisonous spiders have established themselves in NZ, despite our best biosecurity efforts. At least we don't have any snakes and our only potentially dangerous mammals are wild pigs and dogs.

For most of my life I was just like you, scared to death of spiders. Then about 6 years ago I was involved in a writing project that required me to do a lot of research on spiders. I read books, watched documentaries, and slowly came to understand spiders. By the time the research was over I found that I was no longer scared of spiders. I came to realise how irrational the fear is.
Did you know that spiders can't hear? They have no ears, which made me feel guilty for killing any spider that I screamed at that kept moving in my direction. That actually may explain why so few believe the words, 'They're more afraid of us than we are of them,' because they can't be shouted away. They can barely see - light/dark and very close motion, so that scene where the spider watches Chris then gets distracted by Ross I now know is entirely unrealistic. Spiders are cannibals so they would never swarm towards a common goal like they do in this film.
These aren't criticisms of the film by the way, any more than I would criticise Jaws for misrepresenting a shark. It's fiction, so it's poetic licence. The problem only comes when people mix reality with fiction in their head, and that happens because few arachnophobes would ever do independent research on spiders. Although I'd argue they should, for their own sakes. It's the old adage: 'We fear what don't understand.' By extension we can get over that fear should we come to understand what we're fearing, and I'm a living example of that. A cured arachnophobe.

Yea i realized 15 years ago they're just like any other living thing just trying to get by day to day. What changed my view of them was randomly watching one in my bathroom as i took a shower. Watched it walk from his posted up position in the corner ceiling all the way across the room to the shower rod , and then stopped for few minutes , and then walked back to his corner spot. Took me a few minutes to put it together and realized he was drinking the water from the steam condensation build up on the shower rod.
Again like i said before it was just trying to survive , since that day i haven't killed a spider , most times just let them be and worst case scenario capture it and move it outside. I especially like saving the ones that get stuck in the bathtub , for whatever reason they seem to not be able to get out and before would just let the water wash them down the drain but over the last 15 years have probably saved 20 or so getting them out of the tub.

Every time I go to the bathroom I check who's hanging out behind the toilet.

Actually, seeing/watching them is not a problem (that's why I never knew before), but the mere idea of them touching me makes me shiver to the bone. Especially as I'm a wimp in regards to plant/insect poisoning.

Great reaction like always i love this movie, there some fun facts about it. The production shot in a part of venezuela where no movie production had filmed before. For the opening sequence, which takes place in south america, and where a photographer is bitten by a deadly spider that then hitches a ride back to the states in his coffin, the crew headed to the tepuis of venezuela's canaima national park no movie had filmed there before.
One spider used on the production was named for a hollywood director. The production required two species of spider: the first the arachnid that hitches a ride from south america to california, needed to measure about one foot across. The filmmakers found their star in a bird-eating tarantula native to the amazon; there was only one such spider in the U.S.
Marshall named the spider "Big Bob" after director Robert Zemeckis. The spider had to be made scarier for the movie, as terrifying as "big bob" was, he still wasn't scary enough for arachnophobia. So the production painted purple stripes on his back and added a prosthetic abdomen “to give him greater bulk,” And to cast the smaller spiders, the production put them through a “spider olympics.”
In the movie, "Big Bob" arrives in california and promptly mates with a house spider, creating super deadly offspring. To find the right arachnids for the job, Marshall and his team evaluated a number of species including Wolf spiders, Tarantulas, and Huntsman spiders, by putting them through a “spider olympics,” running each species through 10 tests, including speed (the faster the spider, the scarier it is), climbing ability, and reaction to heat and cold.
The “gold medalist,” according to Marshall, was the three-inch-wide Delena spider, a harmless but sinister-looking huntsman native to Australia that was introduced to New Zealand in the 1920s. Marshall joked that “we got them all little passports,” which was sort of true: the production did have to jump through hoops to bring 300 of the spiders to the U.S. for filming (and that was just the initial shipment; supplies were replenished every two weeks).
    Keep up the amazing work.

Hernias are intestines breaking through the abdominal wall, and one type happens behind the balls. By touching the muscle below and asking the patient to cough, a bulging intestine can be detected. It's common for guys to get tested like that before playing sports, and randomly by their regular doctor.

I used to live in The Philippines (Clark Air Base) in the 80s. Once in the kitchen at night and a spotted a roach on top of the washing machine. I walked over slowly to swat it and the dang thing fly off right at my face. And, another time, we were packing up the house to move back the the US. I was laying in the top bunk looking up at the ceiling. I start to see roaches zig zagging across the ceiling and one falls off onto my face.

Of course, not a single Romance language uses letters like å, æ, ø and k.
These are characteristic for Northern Germanic languages.
The lack of any á, é, ú, ð and þ made it clear that it can't be Icelandic.
Swedish has an ä instead of an æ and an ö instead of an ø.
Danish could have been the winner but there were too many hard single consonants like "t"s in the words whereas Danish would rather use soft double consonants like "dd"s instead.

If Spielberg's could use real living aliens for his "ET: the extraterrestrial" movie, I wouldn't put it past him to use real spiders for a movie called "Arachnophobia".

When you were watching "Masters of the Air" you may have heard the actors talking about the Norden bomb sight, one of the most accurate bomb sights of the era. The cross-hairs for the Norden were made from black widow spider silk (one of the strongest natural substances in the world) and to get enough silk to make many bomb sights they had to farm black widow spiders by the thousands, which they did very close to where I live. When WW2 was over, the government had no more need for bomb sights, so they didn't need the spiders so they just dumped all the spiders outside. To this day, our area has the highest concentration of these spiders anywhere in the U.S. Their bite is venomous but not fatal. That said, they can grow big and they are quite wicked-looking. So, I appreciate your apprehension of spiders. Enjoyed your reaction. You are a trooper. Subscribed to your channel.

Here to leave like and comment only. Whilst I am not arachnophobic (actually have a six legged tarantula living in my garage that likes to hang out) this movie traumatized me as a 9/10 year old when I saw it in theaters
    Hope your reaction was fun!

I've noticed that everyone sees the name 'Steven Spielberg' in the credits and just assumes he directed it. He didn't. Same with Gremlins.

    30:33 (Kamilla) 😮...........
🫡 Well done getting through Arachnophobia with arachnophobia!
When I first saw this I considered myself a seasoned horror fan (at 20).
I had a healthy (distance) respect for spiders and it took a lot for a film to scare me..... This fricking film.... My feet came off the floor so fast I nearly doubled kneed myself in my face! This is the only film to ever bring me out in a sweat.....
    and it's a PG 😂
I love spiders too much for it to affect me like that today.
