Steve Martin in the little-seen "The Man with Two Brains." Also the woman looks familiar because she was in "When Harry Met Sally." She was director Carl Reiner's wife and Rob's mother.
“Gattaca” ~ starring Ethan Hawk, Uma Thurman, Jude Law, Alan Arkin and Tony Shalhoub…fantastic movie. I’m sure a lot of channel viewers would endorse it also.
This is how Steve Martin was in the beginning of his career. His standup, this film, his characters on Saturday Night Live. It wasn't until later that he calmed down a bit with "Father of the Bride" and "Roxanne", etc.
He said that a traditional joke has a setup and a punchline, well, he decided to just do the punch lines. That thought is what inspired his non-stop sight gags and bizarre physical humor.
The line actually came from one of his early comedy stand up routines... you can find it on the album Lets get small... he had it in his routine, and that line was the basis of his idea for this movie. Classic comedy. 😊
Ever since I first watched this, that line has stuck with me. For decades. Just out of the blue, "I was born a poor black child." would just pop into my head, and I chuckle. The ONLY reason I clicked this was to hear that line...and "I'm gonna stay this color?". Ahhh. Good times. :)
His skin color, and sense of rhythm may have disagreed with that statement, but his heart was totally in it with his family. We used to get absolutely minuscule while listening to _Let’s Get Small._
"I was born a poor black child." 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 Fun Fact: Stanley Kubrick was a big admirer of this film. He would often recite lines from the film to cast and crew on his films and he once invited Steve Martin over so they could play chess. Lost In Translation Fact: When Marie (Bernadette Peters) is applying the face mask treatment to the older gentleman, she mentions that it will make the customer look years younger. At that moment his wife exclaims "ahlevai" which means "I wish" in Hebrew. Location Location Fact: The gigantic house shown in the film is the infamous Sheik Al-Fassi mansion in Beverly Hills, the first time the residence appeared in a major motion picture. The property was selected over about a half-dozen contenders, which included the former Harold Lloyd and Marion Davies estates. One reason this abode was chosen was because its very large and spacious rooms meant that any filming done in one part of the dwelling allowed great vista shots of adjoining areas at the same time. The mansion also had its own basement disco, where the dance scene was filmed. The 38-room mansion no longer exists; it was torched by an arsonist in 1980, and the building was demolished with the site becoming a vacant lot.
I don’t know if it’s true, but I had heard that he adopted the opposite hair coloring direction most would take, when it became apparent that his hair would be prematurely completely grey; just to go ahead and establish that distinguished look for him until nature took its full course soon enough. Like I said, I can’t verify that, but it seems like a good idea if you want to maintain a recognizable image as a performer. Also, owning it like that seemed like a Steve Martin way to go about things.

😎👍 I wouldn't consider this to be among Steve Martin's best comedies, but it's an important one as it introduced him to the theater-going public. He was already famous for his stand-up comedy and appearances on various television programs throughout the 1970s. Pretty much the same thing that "Love At Firs Sight" (1977) did for Day Aykroyd, "Foul Play" (1978) did for Chevy Chase and "Meatballs" (1979) did for Bill Murray. 🥸 Top-tier Steve Martin comedies (at least to me) would include "All Of Me" (1984), "Roxanne" (1987) and "Bowfinger" (1999).
I think Steve Martin was the beginning of comedians headlining arenas. The late seventies was a great time for comedy, so many brilliant people making us laugh.
Great reaction ladies to this silly but hilarious classic early Steven Martin comedy (that is always so quotable even to this day)... And remember "STAY AWAY FROM THE CANS" 🥫
I watched most of this again a couple years ago but just couldn't get into it like I used to, but seeing you guys watch made me laugh and smile again almost continually
Steeve Martin was one of my favs growing up. If you want to se him be a character more, try The Man With Two Brains, or maybe Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid.
I was a Senior in high school when this came out, so everyone was repeating the lines during and between classes. Steve was the biggest attraction on SNL in the mid to late 70s and had some of the best skits. Highly recommend watching another great Steve Martin comedy called Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - as you both seen to appreciate classic films.
"Gosh! You have my last name tattooed right there under the j's! First I get my name in the phone book and now I'm on your @$$! You know, I bet more people see that then the phone book."
I saw this when it first came out back when theaters were huge one-off structures rather than multiplexes. The auditorium was packed full with people psyched up for the film. It was an absolute riot watching it in that environment.
I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out. One of my favorite moments was the scene with the water coolers filled with wine. The audience just fell out laughing at such a crazy original sight gag.
It's been a long time, but I seem to remember Steve trying to juggle cats on Saturday Night Live. One of my favorite stand up bits of his from the'70s was when he revealed that his cat was extorting money from him. On a side note, he and Bernadette Peters had a personal relationship for a period of time. I don't remember how long it lasted.
Funny to hear it described as different from his kind of humor. This was precisely his kind of humor in the 70's and 80's. The early Saturday Night Live stuff (Wild and Crazy Guy, King Tut, Theodoric of York Midevil Barber, etc.) I highly recommend looking up these skits.
I still maintain this was the best movie Steve Martin ever made. There were a couple or three bits from his stand up comedy albums he was able to work into this movie, too. Some of his other best work was when he used to appear on Saturday Night Live in the 70s- He had a recurring bit where he and Dan Ackroyd would play a pair of swinging Czechoslovakian brothers (another character he used to do on his comedy albums) If you'd like a movie recommendation, check out The Lady Killers sometime. Not the remake- The original 1955 version with Peter Sellars and Alec Guinness
This movie established Steve Martin as a slapstick comedic actor, but he quickly transitioned to more mature roles. Many of his subsequent films are excellent, well worth watching.
Early Steve Martin here and the dialogue reminds me a lot of Ted Striker in Airplane! And the 20's flapper style, mousy and squeaky voiced female lead (Bernadette Peters) was definitely an analogy of silent film star Mary Pickford and even more Betty Boop sounding than she was in life.
Love this movie! I also remember Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd as the Festrunk Brothers on SNL. Their skits should be here on TH-cam like a lot of other memorable skits are on the official channel. Also, Steve Martin recorded a song called “King Tut” and he performed it on SNL, too. Brings back some fun memories.

Bernadette Peters is mostly known for her roles on Broardway. She is a fantastic singer. She was dating Steve Martin at the time. She was mentioned in the movie Deadpool. Her image was on the small purse. Vanessa drops it in the alley when she is abducted.
this was steve martin's first movie. his character was based upon his stand-up comedy, tv-persona. after this he concentrated less on the absurd and his films matured as did his acting. "pennie's from heaven" (1981), a musical of sorts, is my favorite steve martin film. its a serio/comic blend directed by herbert ross and co-starring bernadette peters and jessica harper with an outstanding appearance by christopher walken. a wonderfully bitter-sweet film. check it out. thanks for the video.
For those that grew up watching movies like "Father of the Bride" or watching "Only Murders in the Building," this is old school Steve Martin. It's much closer to the standup comedy he did when he first became big in the late 70's.

At the time of this movie's release Steve Martin was in the stratosphere from his many appearances on Saturday Night Live and his comedy tours. I saw him live in '79 and it was like seeing a rock star. I've always loved his brand of humor.
Jackie Mason (Mr. Hartounian) voiced a LOT of Jewish characters in cartoons. I used to listen to him as the sarcastic Ant Eater in the Pink Panther cartoons. His wife (Sharon Johansen) was a Playboy model in '72.
Do you remember John Byner? He did the Jackie voice of "The And and the Aardvark;" he also did the voice of, "Charley." the ant who was a Dean Martin sound-alike
Steve Martin playing a character like Navin is more in-line with his early work, his stand-up comedy and characters from Saturday Night Live like the Wild and Crazy Guys. Check out his other early movies, "Dead Men Don't War Plaid" and "The Man with Two Brains."

Absolute classic Martin film. So many great memorable lines. I'm guessing both you never knew about Bernadette Peters before the viewing. She's always been known for her stage and singer career. The mansion he owns later in the film is the same one used for the original "Beverly Hillbillies" TV show, especially the pool area. The home has been seen in a LOT of movies and shows. Steve was the first comedian to actual sell out stadiums for his shows. No other comedian before him had done that. He inspired a lot of comedians. His other superb classics I highly recommended for viewing here on the channel are "Little Shop of Horrors", "Planes, Trains and Automobiles", "L.A. Story" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels".
This was Steve Martin's first movie, after his stand up career and appearances on SNL. His style of comedy has definitely changed over the years. One of my favorite of his movies is L.A. Story (1991)
Such a great movie, it's my favorite of Steve Martin's. This and Three Amigos are classics. Since you two really seem to like the goofy comedies, you should check out Johnny Dangerously. Micheal Keaton and Joe Piscopo are hilarious in it and Peter Boyle has some of the best lines ever. Plus, the rival mob boss, Moronie, is comedy gold.
This is an under-rated classic. I grew up watching Saturday Night Live in the 70's. It was a must see back then. I was born in 1968 I can still remember seeing the first episode at 11:00.
One of my favorite bits of this movie. In my family, we say this all the time when we're gathering stuff to go somewhere. "I've got X and Y and Z, and I don't need one other thing! Oh, I need this!"
Fun one, Ladies! Yep, saw this in the theater. Had two or three of Steve Martin's comedy albums and was already a huge fan when the movie came out. It's a fun one, but my favorite movie of his is L.A. Story! Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂 You are both looking Lovely. 💕.

I left a note on 32 Flavors of Nick Weiser's "Toxic Tuesday" stream for their fans to check this review, and some of your fans might like Nick's stream, just be ready for PG-13 to R -level language at times.
I love this movie. What a classic. I love seeing your first watch reaction
29:21 - The butler Hobart was played by Maurice Evans - he was Dr. Zaius in the original Planet of the Apes movie.
Yes, it is one of the all time best comedies. Thanks for the great reaction.
Like many other comedies, it couldn’t be made today. Feelings are too fragile.
29:10 It's also the pool in Bedazzled (the remake in 2000)
I was 12 when my dad took me and my big sister to see this movie. I laughed my butt off almost from start to finish.
Stay away from the cans!
The absurdity of The Jerk plays well with the 'endearing idiot' trope being embodied in Naven.
This is an under-rated classic. I grew up watching Saturday Night Live in the 70's. It was a must see back then. I was born in 1968 I can still remember seeing the first episode at 11:00.
This entire move was essentially a gag on movies with an obvious beginning, middle, and end.
This is his best film and my spiritual biography.
"I don't need anything. I need this..."
😂😂
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment - "...and this paddle ball game..."
❤️😍
Thank you!!
