i really love this movie. i think it is especially well crafted, the casting is awesome, it is full of details, but... this maybe wouldn't be my first choice in order to try out horror (and maybe not my second or third either). anyway, thank you for both your efforts! the reaction was almost more intense than the movie itself. i imagine it must've been like a rollercoaster (that gets really sad at points) 😅

There’s so many excellent pieces of foreshadowing throughout this movie, it really is the kind of thing you have to watch it more than once.
    [Spoilers ahead]
When Annie (the mom) goes to the group therapy session, she talks about her father dying when she was a baby - starving himself and hearing voices - as well as her older brother who killed himself and suffered from ‘schizophrenic hallucinations’ and accused their mother of “putting people inside him”. When you get to the end and it’s revealed the grandma was a member of a cult that worships Paimon, a king of Hell, and would regularly offer vessels to bring him into our world in order to gain great wealth. A thing to note is there are notes that reveal Paimon prefers a male vessel, that’s why the grandma wanted to get her hands on Peter, and the events of the movie happen to move Paimon from Charlie’s body to Peter.
Looking back at Annie’s family, there was never any schizophrenia or hallucinations. Annie’s mom was trying to use her husband and son for the ritual to allow Paimon to possess them, and failed. She really did “put people inside him”.
And the moment where Charlie says: “who’s gonna take care of me when you die?” is so much more horrifying on a second watch, when you realize she’s talking about the ritual at the end of the movie.

One of the horror masterpieces of modern cinema. The actors are brilliant, the visuals are sophisticated and already perfectly crafted, and Colin Stetson's hellishly beautiful score, composed mostly for wind instruments - remember that Paimon is known for his camel-riding trumpets and other instruments - gives this a perfectly put together piece of work. There are few films that are capable of having a physical, physiological impact on the viewer during and after the film.

If you have not seen these, the obvious follow-up is Midsommar (2019;) also The VVitch (2015;) The Ritual (2017;) Green Room (2015;) Rosemary’s Baby (1968;) Night Of The Creeps (1986;) Return Of The Living Dead (1985.)

Think...no part of this movie would have happened, if Annie right from the beginning, went through her mom's boxes! Pro tips...go back to the scene, the mom's work table, watch the blue bottle! The director did Midsonmar as well. It's good but I just kinda didn't buy the premise, so I wasn't as impressed. This movie here, I would put up with The Thing, Exorcist, the shining, a few others. How Toni Collette didn't win an Oscar for this, is beyond me! A bit of horror truth, when he smashed his face in the desk, he was supposed to hit padding but didn't. His face looking all dislocated, was real! Also Peter's first class, is the same subject from the original Holloween, and the trailer for this came out the same day, the Halloween reboot did!😮😮😮Another callback is during their seance, the clock stops, callback to exorcist! What was hereditary in this family wasn't mental illness, it was Grandma and proly those before her, driving family members insane, with their satanic/cult worship! Charlie was already possessed, represented by the clicks. Heard while she was alive, and after she died, BEFORE the seance. I would say, joan tried sacrificing her son and grandson. Either they killed themselves, or she killed them. Seems if Paimon is not happy with a body it is in, it has to die and be beheaded, so paimon can leave the body, i say it happened to dear old grandma, and definitely happened to Annie and Charlie! I just noticed a weird parallel...the biggest foreshadowing...when the dad gets charlie from the treehouse to go to the funeral, she standing up in the corner, and the camera view is from below slightly like shes twisting and floating!!!! Then In the almost final scenes, the mom is up in the corner of charlies room then floats away, then is up in the corner, above peter, as he's looking at his burned dad!😮 And finally, charlie is back where we first met her, hanging in the treehouse! Biblically speaking, u NEVER want to conjure someone who is dead...this NEVER goes well! King Saul conjured the spirit of the profit, and all went downhill real fast!
Anyone notice in mom's room, triangle on the floor. The mirror? Like absolutely zero reflection?😮😮😮😮. For me, I just couldn't by into Midsonmar, so I thought it was stupid. But u may like it. His next was with Joaquin Phoenix, in I think called, Beau is afraid. The Oscars ought to before themselves on this one! She has been a top ten actor, male or female, for 30 years! The mom in 6th sense, this, knives out, a offbeat comedy with Cameron Diaz, there's nothing she can't do! also think, every word out of grandma and Joanie's mouth was a lie. And u can bet they both killed off the male members of their families, to gain power or get Paimon into one of the male bodies. Or both. Joanie knew, if Annie did a seance, by herself or with family, she would let Paimon/Charlie loose in her house, because Annie had zero idea how to end a seance, or send demons back to where they came from. So Annie's dad was either starved by Grandma or he did it to himself purposely, to be weak and no good for a demon. Annie's brother said in his suicide note, Grandma was putting people inside him. And Joanie? Probably herself, drowned her son and grandson! Also after Charlie's death, the mom goes to sleep in the treehouse, watch the wall when the camera zoom pulls backwards!😮😱

The director has spoken a lot about the story. King Paimon is a real king of hell in The Lesser Key of Solomon. Charlie was possessed by Paimon from the beginning of the movie. Peter wasn’t emotionally damaged enough for Paimon to possess. Since Paimon wants a male host, the grandma’s sect, including Joan, mess with the family and Peter until Paimon can possess him.

Nice reaction. NGL this movie is a masterclass in creating suspense. Viewers are just cooked in their seats waiting for the scare to happen.
Also ever since I became fluent in English I never trusted translators again. They're just injecting lots of things that aren't there in movies, books, games etc.

The Italian saying "Traduttore, traditore" (translator, traitor) comes to mind. Aside from simple statements (e.g. "the car is red"), literary translations are necessarily rewritten versions of the original, since no two languages have the same set of words and connotations. Then there's just straight up removing or inserting things, which is sometimes a part of "transcreation"/localization but usually the mark of a hack.

I’m not sure where the “Americans don’t take their shoes off at home” thing comes from, but it’s always been that way for me as an American. Whenever I came home or visited a friends house as a kid, we always take our shoes off, and always done so as an adult. Same with my friends. Why do foreign people think we don’t do this? Or is it true and I just live in the few places in America where it’s common?

I’m from the U.S., but I grew up in a state where a lot of Scandinavians settled, and am of Norwegian descent myself, and taking your shoes off when you enter someone’s house is very common here. I personally, was brought up being taught that you don’t wear your outside shoes in your own home, and that you were being considerate by taking your shoes off when you enter someone else’s home.
After seeing this, I’d also love to see you guys react to the movie, The Descent sometime. But if you don’t want a movie like that right now, I’d really love to see a reaction from either just you by yourself, or both of you together, to a Norwegian movie called Trollhunter.

I understand the dialogue in the movie fine, but I still like to read the subtitles. I'm Swedish and understand 90% of written Norwegian, so it's fun to learn the words I don't know, which I can usually pick up from the context. "Jeg klarer det ikke!" 😥
