  • EPISODE 12
    Getting stuck into the fitting of the fashion timber! ( The timber that creates the angle between counter stern and transome )
    Now i've got the timber glued together and the inside scribed and shaped to fit the ferro cement counter, its time to start dry fitting.
    Also its time to make a start on the coach roof. Beginning with removing the rest of the existing timbers to make way for the next steps.

    Good to see a fellow rock boat builder making some good progress, not so many of us 'finished' our boats well enough to go sailing. I built a Herreshoff Marco Polo (55', three mast schooner) back in the 70's and was lucky enough to sail a bit more than 50K miles before I moved back ashore. Best sail ever? A week in the Westerlies, blowing about 40kts in the Gulf of Alaska....making just short of 200miles a day. Double handed, hand steering etc, everything up but the mizzen (nerve failed at sundown the first day of the good wind, but the boat was handling it fine.) -Veteran '66-68 (P.S. Anybody know where Valkyrie is at the moment? )

    Hi Finn. 40 years ago I sailed a ferro Colin Archer around S.E Asia, so am very keen on watching your progress.
    I think it would be interesting to viewers to see a bit of Smack history and a walk around of the hull shape (bow , turn, keel, rudder etc).. All we have really seen recently is the stern. All the best from Japan. gary

    Yes, working a full-time job does eat into personal project hours. But your commute is just a short walk! Fighting traffic for 45 mins to get home to my projects zapped me for another half hour to chill after the ordeal. Hated that. Retired now, but sometimes have to save for 2-3 months to buy next batch of stuff for whatever. Available time has replaced available funds-- so my projects still take forever! LOL...

  • @oomwat6101
    @oomwat6101 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The tarp you have over the boat won't be helping the moisture content.
    I assume it's there because the roof leaks?
    You could string a rope above the boat and throw the tarps over that, like a washing line.
    That way there's some airflow under the tarp, which should help with drying everything out.

    • @knotfinnishedyet9170

    • @knotfinnishedyet9170
      @knotfinnishedyet9170  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man, it’s not easy. Am working on that part 😉 the cabin top came off due to a number of reasons.
      Firstly, there was a substantial amount of defects in the timber, ( previously shown and discussed in another video ) rot and nasty splits either side of the companion way, the port side can side was full of wood worm holes and a couple areas of rot around the portholes.
      I decided to remove the whole lot and rebuild so I can give myself a little more head room in the galley and saloon.

    Finn, I noticed that as you were moving around the cabin, that you would have been banging your head on deck beams (had they been there). Perhaps you could add a few inches to the cabin sides to give more headroom for yourself inside ? It could be that you appear taller because of hat and hair ?

    • @knotfinnishedyet9170
      @knotfinnishedyet9170  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mark, haha yes the hair and hat may add an inch or two! I was able to walk around under the cabin top missing the roof beams my a few mm, but yes I do plan the increase the height a couple of inches to allow that bit more space.
