    Unfortunately for us Laker fans it was The perfect Storm. The league had literally just taken over the Hornets. Had the trade gone down with any other team there would have been less of a chance that this could have happened but because the commissioner was directly involved in the day-to-day operations of the Hornets every other owner was looking at him and would blame him... Don't forget David Stern was also in the last years of his tenure with the NBA so he knew he couldn't leave Adam Silver with 28 angry owners and a Laker team that would dominate the league for the next 10 years...

      The Lakers were way too committed to Kobe to let him go (at least prior to his Achilles injury). Maybe if he tore his Achilles at that time, it could have happened. But that was 3 years after. The Lakers is a FAMILY owned team, and they treat their players like a family owned team... so with Kobe's committment for 17 years I don't see them getting rid of him. Think about it... in 2010, Lebron had not one a SINGLE title. Why would they drop a proven champion for Lebron, who keeps losing in the east??? Just wouldn't have happened.

      @@cincinnatias Yes, he's full of it. I'd heard via a podcast (Paul Shirley) around 2012, that despite Chris Paul having great respect for Kobe, he didn't want to play with him; information that Shirley had heard about. People always get on Stern about blocking that trade, but that's the only logical reason that he would have done so. Even if the NBA owned and were running the Hornets (Pelicans) at that time, didn't mean that they weren't going to allow any trades; especially if it benefited the Hornets. Think about it, they (the NBA) still wound up trading CP3 to the Clippers shortly after, while they were still operating the team.
      On top of this, it's not like the NBA doesn't have a history of bending over backwards to make something work for the Lakers. Anthony Davis. Shaq. Kareem. Howard. Pau Gasol. Kobe, to an extent, as he didn't want to play for Charlotte in '96, but the Lakers were one of two teams that he wanted to play for.

    I was still mad that this trade didn't go through because that and the couple years that followed (injuries too) robbed Kobe of at least 1 more ring. But I didn't know it was this grand of a scheme. That team with or without Kobe could have potentially repeated. Don't think they'd have won a bunch though because you still had the Warriors coming in the mid and late 2010s, the Cavs & the Heat (since he said Bron was already there). But on paper it would be remarkable.

Howard had a bad back and was never the same player in the years that followed & CP is a pass first PG & Kobe was done after 2013. On paper it looks good but when you really think about it the extreme most they'd have won in the 2010s decade is probably 2. And that is me being generous because 2011 is likely the only genuine shot at making a final. Kobe wouldn't offer much after 2013 due to injuries and there is no equivalent player to that guy at that time on the market. Only LeBron and he wasn't available.

      Typically NBA deal increase by about 5 - 8 million dollars yearly over the course of the contract so it’s possible to only have a 12-15 million dollar cap hit for a max player back then.

    If he had done that, it would have devalued every franchise in the NBA.
    The NBA took over the team to prevent that from happening and it was looking to find someone who would buy the team.
    The NBA thought that by trading Chris Paul, their best player, the value of the team would decrease and it would hurt the franchise values of the other 29 owners.
    The trade was vetoed so that any potential buyer would have, at least, one superstar.

    The only thing I don't necessarily agree on is the 2 max players starting at 12 million. When the Heat got their big 3 I'm pretty sure all three started at 18-20 million the first year of the deals. But, still a CP3, Kobe, LBJ and Dwight would have been terrifying.

      LeBron and Bosh signed 6 year $110 million dollar deals. Starting at $14.5 million with a opt out clause after 5 years. Wade took a little less. It’s crazy cause a little more than 10 years after they signed those deals those same max contracts are more than double with 5 years.

    As a Laker fan, I liked the idea of bringing Paul to LA, but not at the expense of giving up Odom too. Odom was a team player and great defender. He also could play all five positions. He was a key component in winning those two titles.
    However, if the trade went thru, the Lakers might have 19-20 titles, instead of 17.

    I still believe the "official" reason. Like honestly why would a team that's about to enter rebuild mode want 2 guys over 30 on big contracts. Without hindsight the Clippers package made so much more sense. The Hornets got: a young player who looked like a future star (Eric Gordon), a center who was a year removed from a 19/9 all star season (Chris Kaman), a recent lottery pick who had shown some flashes as a rookie (Aminu), most importantly they got the Timberwolves unprotected pick. The wolves looked like they were going to be battling for the worst record in the NBA. Unfortunately it didn't pan out and that pick became Austin Rivers but at the time thats a really nice haul.

    • @emmapeel38
      @emmapeel38 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's it.
      All of this is nonsense. To add, CP3 and Kobe never would have worked out. Kobe never wanted to play with a ball dominant PG, and CP3 is not the type of guy to take anyone's crap; they would have been fighting early on. People forget about the (few) healthy games Nash played with Kobe, and Kobe was calling for the ball the moment Nash crossed the center line, which pretty much handcuffed Nash (and D'Antoni's ball movement offense). That whole team was a trainwreck (Kobe included and his stats that year were impressive but misleading). I'd heard well over a decade ago, that - at least in part - CP3 didn't want to play with Kobe; though he always had great respect for him (and he probably wanted to keep it that way).
      I also think CP3 never wants to play with LeBron; even though they're close friends.
      And it's not like the Lakers have EVER had a history of getting shafted by the NBA. Pau Gasol, Kareem, Dwight Howard, Anthony Davis, Shaq and Kobe (Kobe didn't want to play for Charlotte) in '96, etc.

  • @mikeruck2888

    I think he meant 4 and 3 mid contracts, not 7 max. The Lakers would've had an insane 3 max contract players and room for a 4th max contract player.... and plenty room for 2-3 star caliber players. Still a super mega team.

      Sure it's positive, more than 70% winning percentage. He's one of the GOATS. What I am saying is that fans are complaining that David Stern stop Kobe from winning more than 5 ships because he blocked the Chris Paul trade. That's a false narrative because the late great Kobe was in the finals 7 times, it was just unfortunate he didn't win it all. Therefore they need to stop blaming other people if he didn't win more than 5. But he's still in my top 5 above LBJ....

    His math doesn’t make sense at all, 12mil doesn’t get you a Lebron or Bosh unless they want to take the absolute minimum value. If they did get CP and DH, that 24m can get them a few shooters at best. It would have been a dominant team on paper but we saw what the 2012 Lakers were and those trades fcked the Lakers up for a decade.

    • @yw3178
      @yw3178 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Go look at their contract in 2010-2011. Lebron and bosh salary was 14.5m while in Miami heat. U think one wouldn’t be tempted to take a 2.5m pay cut to play with cp3 kobe and Howard? So it’s totally possible if they aren’t in the heat already.

    • @yw3178
      @yw3178 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The 2012 lakers was a fiasco because most of them were in their last legs and past prime. Now imagine that lakers with 2 more young super stars joining kobe Howard and cp3/Nash lol. And like Gilbert said when kobe contract was over, they have another 24m over. They could fill that void with another young superstar. Lakers would most likely dominate the 2010s.

    • @davidl242
      @davidl242 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yw3178 they both signed multi year deals north of 110m, i think the math worked out to roughly 18-19 mil per year. Might be a little less early but thats just more cap penalty in later years. On top of that you would need to restructure both Kobe and Howard’s contract otherwise that luxury tax bill will be through the roof.
