I got to play this in all its 3DO glory at Circuit City in my mid teens. There was nothing that felt smoother, more badass and adrenaline inducing than blasting down the road blaring Rusty Cage, while knocking the other bikers off their rides. It didn't even matter what place I took. I rarely felt so alive.
EA has been masters of, "Let's crank out a piece of crap we can scalp people on until they get smart enough to quit trusting the franchise." They should be in jail for progressively murdering all of the things I loved about them in my childhood.

I've been playing Road Rash 2 for over 25 years and I don't see that stopping anytime soon, perhaps Road Rash needs the Sonic Mania/Streets of Rage 4 treatment.
Revisiting the 32 bit generation recently it's clear that 2D sprites and scaling were ditched too early and so many franchises just vanished, imagine what a 32 bit Streets of Rage or Sonic (2d) could have looked like. That and the N64 looks pretty awful in most games compared to the other 2

I agree Carl. A proper 2D Sonic game on the Saturn would have been great. Unfortunately Super Mario 64 was such a huge hit that Sega had way too much heat and pressure to make 3D games. I understand it too because even myself as a young boy in the mid 90’s I was completely hooked on 3D games. And developers knew it. 2D at the time was feeling outdated. But now we appreciate the sprites and style more.

the crazy thing about this game series is my first hearing about it and playing it at my friends house in the mid 90s while me and some other kids were spending the night, my friend had sega channel, and road rash was on there, we were blown away by this really cool game, then my friend's cousin came over, he was a couple years older, and him and this other older kid who was staying over too completely took over and both played it all night, while the rest of us little kids had to sit back and just watch the older cool kids play... fast forward about 8 years later, that cousin of my friend's dies on a freeway by, yes you guessed it, crashing on his motorcycle, I think it was a kawasaki type, somebody sideswiped him and he fell off and got ran over a bunch of times and broke every bone in his body and was left there to die, he was only 20 yrs old, and I always associated road rash with him even before all that happened cuz that was when I first met him when he stayed up all night playing it... life is freakin crazy man

I really liked Road Rash 3 and didn't mind the visuals at all since it was the 90's and digitization was the big thing. What really cracked me up though a couple years after Road Rash 3D came out was going through the soundtrack and seeing artists before they hit it big, like Sugar Ray and Kid Rock. I also liked to just take a leisurely drive around the map, just start up a race and drive the other way, the game will let you go for about 15 minutes before timing you out and ending the race but it lets you see how the entire game was connected.

There was a version of Road Rash released on the Game Boy Color as well the original OG Game Boy version you showed. It's actually quite impressive and feels smoother framerate-wise than the Genesis games (or Master System/GG versions).
I own all the games in the series except the crappy Sega CD one, and the Saturn and PS1 versions of the 3DO version. I don't think I'll ever want those, unless I get a bug to "complete the collection" as it were. Anyway, my favorite of all of them is PC version of the 3DO release. Absolutely gorgeous visuals in 480p and higher framerates as well. Played it back in the day with a CH Flightstick which worked amazingly well. Tilting the joystick to tilt the bike just made so much sense. I've played and replayed it over the years with other controllers and gamepads (as recently as last year), but some day I need to track down another original 2-button CH Flightstick to play it that way again. The game and that stick are intrinsically linked in my brain.

I don't think RR64 gets enough love and you barely cover its good things:
    1) the combat is one of the most polished of them all and I dare say, the one that required the most techniques and tactics. You could hit forward, backwards, kick, charge those attacks, change weapons (that carried on in Big Game Mode), and you could frikkin stick a weapon into an opponent wheels!!!! (it was an immediate ko).
    2) maybe not as impressive as compared to its cd counterparts, but I can't remember many N64 games with actual track songs.
    3) gameplay was as smooth as butter even on high difficulties, and had a really good progress pace.
    4) multiplayer was by far the best of the series. You could play coop, vs, AND FOUR PLAYERS SPLIT SCREEN. With different modes! And some special closed tracks! We had a blast playing "tag" with my friends!
    5) 4 different types of bikes for each level, and a lot of bikers to pick. You could tell apart boys from girls and "hogs" from "slicks".
    6) Fun as hell and for me on an easy third place, whereas RRII is first and RR32 bits is second. Fourth is RR3D

Though I had the 3 Genesis versions and loved all of them, I have to give RR 64 the gold medal. I think it was the things some purest fans complain about that I actually liked the best, such as the rubber-banding of the NPC's and the focus on combat rather than winning. I also believe no game of any genre or generation ever made me laugh as much. I also love the soundtrack and often listen to the songs on stream with nostalgia.

Road Rash on Genesis has a special place in my heart. I remember in my childhood one summer, playing basketball with a friend that his older brother rolled up on the driveway with a new cbr900rr. My attention was locked onto the bike and was in complete awe on how impressive it was. My friend took noticed and asked if I wanted to play a game. He then showed me the first Road Rash game and I was hooked. Fast forward later, another friend had the Sega Channel, it had the 3rd RR, and became my favorite combat racing game. It was also the first game I played a lot of hours in one sitting. Loved everything about it and while it may be an unpopular opinion, it's my favorite out of the series. The games definitely left a big impact on me and was one of the reasons why I am into sportbikes today. Would love to see RR3 or even the previous 2 get the same remake treatment that Super Hang-On got with the M2 devs.

Wonderful retrospective on Road Rash! Subbed! The original Road Rash was the first-ever video game I purchased brand new at retail (at a Sears, no less). LOVED the soundtrack on the first one. Some hate it, but I adore it. Still listen to some of the tracks in my car on the reg to this day. And then the 3DO version.... The art style and presentation was second-to-none. Great gameplay too. Those two are by far my favorites in the series.

Road Rash 3D0 was perfect for its time. As a kid in the 90's, the "Tude" of that era made the trippy art style and Hammerbox/Soundgarden playing in the background a god send for me. I spent hours just getting off my bike and walking the course, just to admire the scenery.

Man this lockdown has got me so nostalgic for many games. Road Rash for PC was one of the first games I ever bought when I first got my own computer, is one of my favorite games of all time, and in my opinion the best in the series. It's also incredibly well coded and has worked flawlessly on every PC I've owned from Windows 95 onwards... the only issue being distorted colors in Windows 7 and beyond which are easily fixable. There was even a stripped-down and repackaged version some years ago by classic-gaming.net, which was a free download and that removes the CD audio and full motion video but allows the game to run without a disc. This is the version I usually play as it's quick to jump into. Some 20 years on and I'm still managing to exploit little bugs and see things in-game for the first time. One thing that made the game unique was that it was the racer himself that was registered as the player and not the bike as in just about all other racing games, meaning you could dismount and run the entire race if you wanted. It's always funny to plow into a car, come off your bike, and cross the finish line with just the biker. The game would be perfect with a modern remaster, nothing too drastic just higher-detail graphics. I must have played each track a thousand times... some new tracks would be nice too. I'm surprised the community hasn't managed to crack the assets and make new content. I can barely go a single computer session without having to fire it up for a race or two.

Awesome vid. It really brings back the memories and nostalgia. I got into Road Rash around the time of RR2, RR3 and RR for the Psx. I played those games so much, by far one of my favorite series of games back in the day.
I really wish they would do an HD collection. Taking all the games and making all the levels of each game as different circuits. Taking RR classic and RR PSX (3DO) and make that the first circuit since they all were local races, then the second circuit would be you graduating to going national with races from RR2 and then the final circuit would be when you gain national championship and go on for the global one with global races from RR3.
They could also add great colorful characters like from the CD version and the rivalry system. So each race would make other character warm to you or become more adversarial depending on how you treated them the last race.
Then of course make sure to add awesome FMV sequences for getting arrested, crashing out, placing during a race, winning one and beating the circuit.
As far as graphic go make the engine one that mimics the one used for the CD version with updated hd digitized ones.
oooh I would buy that in a heartbeat.
