89-99, what an amazing 10 years for Sega - they released the Genesis, the Game Gear, the Sega CD, the 32X, the Nomad, the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Now one cycle of consoles is almost 10-years. I asked my nephew if the kids at his middle school were hyped about the new XBS1 and PS5, and he said no, everyone wants a Switch so they can play Minecraft and Fortnite. What boring little pukes.
They came up on a generation of games that play it too safe, and have little to no creativity to them, unlike the old days, where devs took chances, they either worked, or bombed, so the programmers would go back to the drawing board coming up with the next unique idea. We think it's bad now with kids and young adults playing boring crap like Fortnite and Minecraft, and the yearly Activision version of Madden, known as Call of Duty, but it'll only continue to roll further and faster downhill.
There is no point to new generations anymore. Consoles are just PC architecture with DRM at this point, and raytracing or higher resolutions doesn't exactly add much of any exciting new design possibilities for games. At least the Switch hardware offers a novel experience to play in its handheld mode. We won't see a blatantly revolutionary generational leap like 8 bit -> 16 bit or 2D -> 3D until Elon gets those things to hook up to our brains...
I can appreciate their preferences, Minecraft is all about the creativity, and isn't making cutting edge graphics and power the priority. While Fortnite also runs on just about anything these days, so it doesn't leverage the latest most powerful machines out there. As for the Switch, it's a portable when you want it to be, much easier to take on the go. The new consoles are very impressive, and I can't wait to see what new experiences they will host in the coming years, but right now they are very hard to get (if you want to pay normal prices), do not really have exclusive games and won't truly for a while. I like what Sony is doing with the Dual Sense controllers and their haptic feedback, hopefully they will incorporate this into the next gen PSVR controls.
the sega genesis will always be my favorite console. i got it towards the end of its life but got so many games to play it on as a result of them being on sale. i think i was 5 or 6 years old? i still have the same console and currently on a mission to collect all the games CIB baby..

From a sacreligous Nintendo fan-always enjoy your content, love the nod to not only nostalgia but the notion that these games are forever tied to milestones of life. I had a similar experience with the Super Nintendo in terms of the “financially coming of age,” and continue to maintain a collection of emulators to share the rich history of games (and experiences) with my friends and family, both young and old! Keep up the great work!
Really fantastic episode dude!! It was great to see some love for Tommy Lasorda Baseball and Arnold Palmer Golf. Those two games plus Altered Beast and Golden Axe, plus great memories of relatives since passed on, made my 12 year old Christmas perhaps the top Christmas of my childhood. I like you played the hell out of baseball and golf and loved every minute of it. THANK YOU for the fantastic memories man!! Hope you have a nice holiday season! Love your stuff!!
Love this video. Its funny i'm mid move and just found all my saved magazine covers and articles, many of which are on the Sega Genesis. Such great memories!
Segalord I've unsubscribed from alot of gaming channels lately but I truly love your content. Keep up the great work dude, I grew up on Sega and this hits me right in the nostalgia.
The Japanese Fist of the North was so much better than the US Last Battle. My favorite launch title of Genesis was Thunder Force 2 by a huge margin. I was simply blown away by the graphics and sound.
The voice over in Thunder Force 2 by today's standard might be considered cheesey but I LOVED it back in the day and still get excited today by it when I play it
While I knew Last Battle had something to do with Hokuto No Ken, I couldn't place it because the game covers events after the first series/movie (I had only seen the movie at that point). I was impressed with the size of the sprites in Last Battle, the logic back then was 'if the Genesis can handle this, it should be able to do a port of Final Fight' and with several Capcom games on the system I always held hope it would show up. I loved Thunder Force 2, it led me to get other Tecnosoft titles, which included Herzog Zwei, that was one of my favorites back then.
Me and my brothers got our Genesis in 1992. So we got our hands on Sonic and Streets of Rage right away. I was blown away. I have never realized before some of the launch titles were not that good. I also remember seeing Road Rash around the time we got it. Solid titles were around already.
They were great at the time, because that level of sound and graphics was so new, and because that's all there was to play (Alex Kidd however was and remains one of the worst games ever made.) I think it shows just how great the system was when some of the earliest titles (Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe) are still considered all-time classics for the console.
I remember playing Altered Beast and Forgotten worlds at a store back then and wanting a Genesis badly. By the time I finally saved enough money to get one, Street Fighter II had just been released for the SNES and ended up buying that console instead. I kept renting a Genesis and playing at a friend's house whenever I could and even though I don't regret getting the SNES, the Genesis is still one of my favorites consoles ever.
In terms of long term investment, you made the right choice. SNESs are way more expensive today than Mega Drives. I love both consoles too, I wasn’t around back in the day but I found mum’s old Mega Drive & SNES in the loft 5 years ago and I loved them both. I think I learn more towards the SNES side for the RPGs but I remember playing Street Fighter 2 for ages when I first got the consoles.
Me and my friends all had the system. We'd spend our weekends going over to each others houses and spend hours playing all of the different games. Those were fun times that I really miss.
I really enjoyed Space Harrier 2 at the time. What I like most about it even today is how the levels blend into each other, as one continuous game. Not a lot games do that, even today. In that sense, it is very immersive, and you can really zone out when playing it.
The last bit of your narration literally swelled me up enough to bring tears. Happy tears based on how similar the memories and much of what yiu said was for me and based on how much people love your content, i'm sure there are many others that share this opinion. And mostly like they all swelled up too. Unfortunately, i wasnt part of this generation, my first console with earned money was an xbox 360 when i was 15. But since i was a small child my cheap parents only got my 2nd hand hammy downs which for me amazingly was the genesis. And man when i played Altered Beast for the first time like u i was amazed. I truly dont understand where the "bad reviews" for that game come from? Its really awesome the only thing that sucked was that it was too short. How bad can a game be when the biggest complaint is that you cant play it anymore? It must be awesome enough to crave more of it. Anyways brother, love your content and honestly if wasnt for you and your videos i would of never gotten into youtube retro game content creators. Again im pretty sure im not alone on this and I wish you much continued success for your great research that in the sega world is 2nd to none. Much love to you and your family bro. -Albert
Aahh. Golden Axe, such nostalgia. The had an arcade cab at a laundromat near me, and I used to finish the entire game on a single quarter on a regular basis 🏆🏆
In Europe the system appeared so it had a better initial catalog, but it didn't become super popular until the release of Sonic the Hedgehog. You shoudl have mentioned Super Hang On's Original Mode, a story mode for the game where you have to beat rivals, getting sponsors, mechanics and upgrading your bike. It had insanly long password but it opened the extra modes route that Sega should have followed with arcade conversions.
The Mega Drive is one of my all time favourite consoles, my first gaming console was an atari 2600 then a master system followed by the mega drive. The excitement and awe of gaming back then was one of the best feelings ever! I've just gotten a PlayStation 5 and it can't compare to the feelings the old games still give me. Oh and I still love Altered beast SLX! Another brilliant video keep em coming, my favourite channel on TH-cam!
my parents sold my NES while I was at school, I was so upset, they went and got me a Sega. I was so pissed, until I turned on Sonic and I knew I had a good console that I would grow to love (thanks to classics like shinobi 3, shining force, Contra HC)
Seeing these videos and watching your channel made me love sega again. I don’t own a actual genesis but have the genesis mini and the this is loaded with its rich library. I did end up getting a Saturn again. I remember seeing the genesis for the first time at my friends house and watching the intro to revenge of shinobi. I was hooked. Ended up being a sega fan since

Fantastic video my friend, I had the same experience on the Snes when i started work and could afford one, I will never forget the whole experience and the games were awesome as are the megadrive games too
Great video guy, thanks for the nostalgia injection. Me and my brother had a Master System for a while and when we got a Mega Drive it felt like such an upgrade, it blew my tiny mind and how big the sprites in some games were.
I didn't get my Genesis until 1993 but I so enjoyed it. That was such an exciting time to be a gamer. Sega and their competitors took gaming to a whole new level.
I was very young, but I remember being three years old back in '95 when my older brother got a Genesis for Christmas. Our first games were Sonic & Knuckles and the 6-Pak collection. I still remember how cool it was to control something on a TV screen lol. My Genesis is hooked up and ready to this very day
The final ending music for Altered Beast is my all time favorite for all games. Perfect ending for your video! This brings back great memories of my mom and dad suprising me with the launch version of the Genesis. Bravo!
The Genesis/Mega Drive only got to my country a couple of years later, but I can certainly relate to your experiences with a lot of these games =) Altered Beast, Mystic Defender, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Revenge of Shinobi and Golden Axe were all early favorites of mine as well ^^
With the new consoles out, this was great idea for a video. It was also the first time I really got into "bits" "parallax scrolling" and the whole "Sega Vs Nintendo" it was all good fun back then though, and we all appreciated each others games
Great nostalgic video. I remember the early Mega-Drive (i'm from the UK) days well. I played most of the games in this video. Ghouls'n Ghosts, Super Hang-On, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Shinobi....all great games. Good times & great memories. It was a fantastic time to be a kid 👍
I didn't get a Genesis until model 3 came out. And man...I missed out ALOT in it's early years. I still have it and love it dearly. Thanks for the video.
Entertaining video, I can remember getting my MD with Sonic 1, Decap-attack and Castle of Illusion saving up for 8 months, doing a paper run. The first time I saw sonic on the MD, I was in disbelieve coming from the master system version of the game, it was day and night difference which just didn't compare. The graphical and sound leap was unlike anything I had ever seen before and a feeling I haven't experience video games.
Happy to say I still own my Genesis and a good portion of these games. Revenge of Shinobi was SO challenging and it took me forever to finally beat that game but it was a lot of fun. The challenge and the Yuzo Kushiro music soundtrack made that a winner for me.
After watching Heavens Gate on HBO Max, one well aware of Sega's 90's marketing can't help but to think that Sega's "Welcome To The Next Level" tag line was lifted right from Heaven's Gates' reference to "The Next Level".
Good video, mate. In my mind I always split the Mega Drive lifespan into two parts, the things you talked about here and then the post Sonic release in 91. That game was a turning point for lots of reasons I feel.
Target Earth was an early title, and still one of my fav Genesis titles to this day. It never caught on much here in North America, but was a hit in Japan.
@@treyslay753 lol Ya it was difficult....the key is using control mode B instead of the default control mode A....it lets you hold your angle of fire, instead of having to constantly adjust your aim angle.
Nice break down my man! I played most of these games myself once I got the Sega Genesis back in the day. One of my personal favorites was a ball buster called INSECTOR-X! I was excellent at it when I was younger. I played it about a year or two ago and it totally handed me my ass. LOL!
Funny thing, I came here to confess my appreciation for you showing Altered Beast some long overdue love, but it looks like plenty of people beat me to it! :)
I remember being absolutely gob smacked, and my jaw hit the floor when I saw that Altered beast looked better on the Genesis, than it did at the arcade.
This a cool video. in 91 I was in first grade. I at that time all I knew was NES until I went to a friends house and eh was playing Sonic 1. My mind was blown and my head exploded,. I was amazed at the sure amazing graphics and gameplay. 1 year later I got my Genesis and became a sega fan for life.
A good friend got a Genesis for Christmas '89 I believe, and I remember lots of Saturdays hanging out playing Altered Beast, Herzog Zwei, and Phantasy Star II. We would walk about two blocks over to a small shopping mall/Albertsons right nearby to rent something from the video rental store and spend all weekend playing it.
0:18 that Super Hang On OST right in the background gave me goosebumps and much nostalgia! If I remember it right, I guess the music track was called Winning Run
@@mrnicktoyou the genesis might have been too costly for the time, so the master system would have been a more logical and less expensive choice, plus the games would be cheaper due to being from an earlier generation.

At least the Switch hardware offers a novel experience to play in its handheld mode. We won't see a blatantly revolutionary generational leap like 8 bit -> 16 bit or 2D -> 3D until Elon gets those things to hook up to our brains...
Lol
Those were some early growing pains but man did it ever blossom into a swan. Love your channel.
I never owned a Genesis but when my friend popped in Sonic 2 i was hooked.
I know Sonic 2 isn't an early game but I'm giving Sega props for that one.
Thank you for keeping retro alive!!!
My personal favorites were Rambo III and Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf. I absolutely LOVED them.
Love your vids dude, keep it up!
I remember the Christmas my father (rest in peace) gave me my genesis. Great great memories, great video!
I read the video title, saw the absolute perfect length, and since it's Sega Lord X, I already know I'm going to love this one. Uploaded 1 hour ago, and at the top of my list!
Thumbs up, and I'm already excited!
I been subbed and watching your vids for a couple years now,and man your content just gets better and better!!!Thanks slx
Thanks for watching.
I still remember the excitement when I’ve got my MD with Golden Axe and Rambo 3 in 1990!
For me, Altered Beast, E-Swat & Shadow Dancer kept me occupied for hours on end.
Of the games mentioned here, Revenge of Shinobi and Ghouls 'N Ghosts are in my top 10 Genesis games.
Same. The music in these games never gets old either.
I really wanted to love Ghouls n Ghosts, it is the one platformer I was never good at!
Thunder Force 2 was my favorite game of those early games. Loved the graphics and music.
@@quatjohn4375 Eeer veer veer veer vrr,; ladder; Good Luck! Yep, I love it too.
Fantastic review down memory lane! Thank you! 👍🏼
1989 was an awesome year. Saved up for a Genesis day 1 at Electronics Boutique. Got Ghouls and Ghosts too. Great days!
Just wanted to say ty to Sega LordX, always such memorable content that isn't forced by sponsors or other means to influence viewers.

Aahh. Golden Axe, such nostalgia. The had an arcade cab at a laundromat near me, and I used to finish the entire game on a single quarter on a regular basis 🏆🏆
I love your content man. I'd love to see a video about the most violent 16 bit video games for the genesis
That bit at the very end was touching. Excellent representation of a console that's more than just a console to you. Well done.
Loved CH!
I appreciate all video game consoles thank you for this Informative video! 👍
Ended up being a sega fan since
i love what you said about how you earned money by working so you can buy the games you wanted... and that you transferred that experience to your daughter. you're an awesome parent for teaching the importance of hard work. i am also trying the same with my kids. all the best!
SEGA: lets put a old man in every sport game cover
I didn't get my Genesis until 1993 but I so enjoyed it. That was such an exciting time to be a gamer. Sega and their competitors took gaming to a whole new level.
Having the genesis in its release year was amazing. It felt special and looked amazing back then. It had some great games as well for a new machine.
what a great channel love this and feel the same way about pc engine, now 50 years old and still playing video games, have subscribed!
I was very young, but I remember being three years old back in '95 when my older brother got a Genesis for Christmas. Our first games were Sonic & Knuckles and the 6-Pak collection. I still remember how cool it was to control something on a TV screen lol. My Genesis is hooked up and ready to this very day
That's how I felt seeing Pong on the TV in the 70's
The final ending music for Altered Beast is my all time favorite for all games. Perfect ending for your video! This brings back great memories of my mom and dad suprising me with the launch version of the Genesis. Bravo!
Man - Space Harrier 2 was epic when I was 10! Not having it, great game. Super hang on is also an absolute classic!
Sega lord x, your the best and always bring me back to my childhood. Keep up the honest and good work
The Genesis/Mega Drive only got to my country a couple of years later, but I can certainly relate to your experiences with a lot of these games =) Altered Beast, Mystic Defender, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Revenge of Shinobi and Golden Axe were all early favorites of mine as well ^^
I remember not really liking soccer but still enjoying that game
With the new consoles out, this was great idea for a video. It was also the first time I really got into "bits" "parallax scrolling" and the whole "Sega Vs Nintendo" it was all good fun back then though, and we all appreciated each others games
Congrats, man! Awesome as always!
Beautiful video as always.
I didn't get a Genesis until model 3 came out. And man...I missed out ALOT in it's early years. I still have it and love it dearly. Thanks for the video.
Forgotten Worlds and Mystic Defender... Man, talk about a nostalgia trip. And I'm with you on Altered Beast. I really dug that old game.
Great video, Jeremy. Very enjoyable to watch.
Blue Thunder (18:13)? Man, I love that movie! Full of stellar dialogues, the intrigues and action. Roy Scheider was a class act! 👍
Target Earth is awesome!
It's cool but Ex-Ranza/Ranger-X destroys it
Great game, but brutally difficult.
Awesome game, it felt cinematic without letting up on the action
@@treyslay753 lol Ya it was difficult....the key is using control mode B instead of the default control mode A....it lets you hold your angle of fire, instead of having to constantly adjust your aim angle.
Nice. I swear yt knows when your about to public a video and starts your old vids cuz I was just watching one n now...this 👍
So many good memories watching this episode! Thank you 😊🙏🙏
Nice break down my man!
It didn't though. It is a pale version of the arcade.
@@craigcotter7476 For the time was impressive, compair to the Nes games at the time.
yeah the arcade not having parallax is unacceptable
And colorfull backgrounds diring boss battles.
As well as better character design (for the main character) and better gameplay.
I loved my sega!!! Sonic was my first game on genesis!.
My parents were cheap and bought us a Master System just when the Mega Drive/Genesis came out. I was so disappointed, lol.
Be happy they got you something, mine got me nothing until i was able to pay for it myself.
@@tchitchouan oh I enjoyed the hell out of the Master System while I had it in the end. I just always dreamed of the Mega Drive.
@@mrnicktoyou the genesis might have been too costly for the time, so the master system would have been a more logical and less expensive choice, plus the games would be cheaper due to being from an earlier generation.
My parents got me a Gameboy. That's all I had till 1992 or so when they finally got me a SNES. I did finally get a Genesis (Nomad) in 1996 or so.
Hah, my bro and I got a Famicom clone and we thought that was the shit. We got our Mega Drive clone in '95 lol. It wasn't until I started working as a teenager in the late '90s when I finally purchased my own, non-clone system - the N64. Hahahah
Stadium shots in the first 1:15 is old Anaheim Stadium. Great memories, terrible baseball. Lots of fun.
Brilliant video dude love your uploads. Always full of variety and interesting features, how about a feature on sega games that hit home micros here in Europe like on the c64, speccy, Amiga etc.
Big fan wish you continued success and growth, hats off to you dude.
Gary Dublin Ireland
These are amongst the hardest to find...but certainly some gold here.
I was 6 when my dad came from work with a Mega Drive, some of my best gaming memories come from this console. I still have it and I do not intend on ever parting with it.
10:19 Thanks Mate! Cheers!
Damn, I love these videos. Been studying too hard today. I need to relieve my childhood.
Altered Beast was the game I most waited for back then too SegaLordX! I am there with you on those who didn't even have a Genesis, trying to understand our love for the thing... Golden Axe, and Ghouls, and Ghosts were always on my wish list for a long time😎
Ghouls 'n Ghosts remains one of my top 5 all-time favorite games. I never get tired of playing it, even though I can beat it in my sleep.
Altered Beast was one of my first games as well, really enjoyed it!
Great video. Genesis was the first system I bought with my own money. Right there with ya. Had Master System before it.
Wonderfully well thought out outro
Excellent video that tells a true story of those days and how we felt!
