Allow me to explain why this video has been re-edited. When creating the scripts for my complete history videos I tend to make them way longer than they need to be and therefor from time to time big chunks get removed. One of those big chunks was talking about the 3DO port of the original game in more detail (17:17) After getting quite a bit of constructive feedback I felt that it was best to add it back in and re-upload the video as sort of a DIRECTORS CUT! The original video can still be found here... th-cam.com/video/CtP2tPeMAzE/w-d-xo.html ...but other than that 1 section and the odd tiny bit of clean up its pretty much exactly the same video. Thanks for understanding guys, hope you like the new video, hope you are all having a great weekend aaaaaaaand hopefully I will see you all next time! Mucho Love -DJ Slope
Could've fixed that Indy 5000 part too but these complete history videos gotta take a lot of work. Keep cranking them out, every one of these gets my little 7 yr old nephew into retro games more & more & that's fuckin AWESOME
I would say that EA's habit of buying up smaller companies and then either shutting them down or leaving them stagnant until they die of starvation is a huge part of what makes them a terribly hated company. Don't give them any slack. They do not deserve it anymore.
The N64 version, with the rocket bikes and everything, was a source of face-destroying laughter between me and my best friend growing up. We're in our late 20's now and still can't keep from busting out laughing long enough to finish a race. XD
On road rash 64, if you hold c right and c down at the same time you can jam your weapon into opponents spokes. That game is an all-time favorite and I still pop it in from time to time.
I actually discovered this series about 10 years ago by accident when I was staying at my great aunt's house, and one of the bedrooms had an old Genesis in it with a few games, Road Rash 2 being one of them. I didn't sleep that night, cause this game took over my life. lol Funny enough, that was also my first real introduction to the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, so all in all, a very eventful night for me, but Road Rash especially stuck out to me, and I've been slowly tracking down different games from the series ever since.
Needs more about Road Rash for PC and online. The MPlayer Road Rash community was huge, they were dumping $5 copies of the game in computer stores that invited players to sing up and compete online, and many did. It was amazing, groundbreaking at the time and worked very well.
Awesome! The game I turned my attic inside out for, only have the box and the booklet so far.. Played this as a child with my mom, she still uses the megadrive 2 after all these years. Nostalgia, gotta go find me a copy of road rash 2 soon..
I still play the 3DO version every few months. Its aged really well and is still loads of fun. Fun Fact: "Biff" from the original Road Rash is EA's Bing Gordon.
There was a version of Road Rash in development in 2006 for the 360, PS3, and PSP. EA NW (based in Warrington) were working on the 360/PS3 versions, while Criterion were working on the PSP version. Sean Murray (from No Man's Sky infamy) apparently worked on the PSP version, and has mentioned it briefly in the past. The 360/PS3 version never got out of the Alpha stage, but was built using a modified version of the Burnout Revenge engine. Sadly, it was ultimately canned when EA NW was shut down (in typical EA fashion) during Summer of 2006.
It's worth mentioning the AI in the genesis games. There are 3 main types of riders on the track with you. You have racers which are more focused on racing than brawling, brawlers who are more interested in smashing skulls than the actual race and there is Natasha. Natasha is different because she is there to teach you about the game. As such she will not attack you, unless you attack her first. Once provoked she will literally try to kill you. I loved the road rash games up until road rash 3D. Easily one of my favorite video game trilogies. Also worth mentioning that the genesis games had side mirrors to see behind you which the CD versions all lacked.
When we were young and played RR2 at a friend's house we did never hit Natasha cause she shared the name with the sis of one of us. What a lucky decision it was.
@@blza_box yeah a few times I forgot to look at the names of the rider coming up along side me and started swinging. She hunted me down and didn't stop til I was out of the race.
I do love the 4 original Road Rash games, so much so, i even have 3 copies of the ps1 version! Back in the day, Road Rash was 1 of those games that prevented me from catching the school bus and also kept me up till late at night as me and brother would have marathon sessions playing the 1st two in the series! Probably my 2nd most played Mega Drive game after SoR2
What really made me love RR 32bit over 1-2-3 was that the ai racers biker clothes were different colored. On 1-2-3 they were all the same, so it felt like it was me versus one big team. It was more immersive imo. Skitchin was also one of my faves.
I disagree on the point of EA. Once upon a Time they were great, but now they are rather crap and consistently so. I'm greatful for their historical contribution to the industry, but beyond that I have little love for a company that sorely treats it's customers and the people who work for them. Good video though.

Modern EA want to give children gambling addictions, but original EA which was made up of almost entirely different people, were an awesome company who published great games. The old company and the new company might share the same name, but they're chalk and cheese levels of different
The digitized soundtracks for the genesis trilogy stick with me to this day. Hell, just hearing some of them in this video transports my mind back to the mid 90's, playing our genesis on that old wooden TV set in the basement. Also, every time I hear "Magic Man" by heart (or is it barracuda? I don't know they are all awesome), something in that track reminds me massively of the road rash soundtrack and I love it.
Road Rash is special to me as a gamer, I sold my NES in 1991 when I saw this game at my friend's house. I haven't played anything at home that looked sounded and felt as good as the original Road Rash at that time. The game made you feel like you were in the race and actually had a relationship with the other bikers. I finished Road Rash after almost a year of playing it, it's one of the hardest games I have ever finished. I got lucky in one race in level 5, the opponent bikers all hit a 🐄 and I was able to squeeze a second place. Road Rash 2 is the polished version of Road Rash 1. Road Rash 3 graphics bothered me, so I skipped playing it. Road Rash PS1 is awesome, but after that Road Rash just kinda faded... Speed Kings on PS2 & boX is the closest thing to Road Rash 132 bit
Dan, you can play music on the 3DO version if you play it on an FZ-10, as it has more RAM to do that. There's also footage of a cancelled PS2 game out there on the web too!

road rash 64 is the best road rash. 4 player multiplayer automatically puts it over the rest since playing with your friends is a HUGE plus. And then you add in that it has way more combat than the others since the enemies stick around your character much more so you have a lot more combat focused game which is what the series is known for and this one does it best. And then you throw in the 3d graphics and world which makes it feel like you are actually progressing on the track rather than just moving along an infinite loop like the genesis ones feel.
Road rash 2 is in my top 10 games of all time. When I was younger, (well past the Genesis' prime) my parents would take me to Gamestop and let me pick out a game from the clearance bin. Even though the first consoles I owned as a kid were the game boy and the ps1, I would play games on my older cousins' Genesis every time I went to their house and convinced my parents to buy me one, after which it quickly became my favorite console ever. I saw road rash 2 in the bin and thought it was a cool name, so I bought it, probably for 4-5 dollars and put it in my Genesis. I didn't take it out for almost 6 months. All the different bikes, the combat and how smooth the racing was, it was too much for my child brain to handle. Never played the other games but that one has a big spot in my heart.
Holy shit, the 3DO version had music by Soundgarden, Therapy? and Monster Magnet. Sign me up. Better than the soundalike of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” drums on Road Rash II.
Twas early '93 when a friend brought Road Rash to my house resulting in one of the best Gaming nights with the Megadrive I had! Absolute Wow. From the second the Megadrive's soundchip BLASTED that classic Hard Rocking theme, I loved it. Cheering, whooping, rocking out to the initial wobbly wonderings on the road, by the third stage, I was heading out to the Highway to Hell, kicking anyones Ass in my way. I was in Awe of the music- "Redwood Forest" , "Pacific Highway" are some of my all time favourite chiptunes. The sequel is equally great, and though its got some extra additions, the level layout looks too familiar. Desert plains and Green country roads. I remember Mean Machines magazine (which I got Religiously) said that, yes RR2 is great but looks and feels too much like the first. When yer 13/14 at the time, I didnt think about that though.😂😂 I was too busy loving the fact that you could wallop the Police now.😂
Man, I hated pretty much all driving games when I was a kid but even I couldn't resist the Road Rash series. Also, Road Redemption is really fun. I was a bit worried after playing the early Kickstarter version but they really fixed it up for the final release.
There's a tree in the sky at 19:19 Someone should report that bug to the devs to see if they can fix it. Glad you added more stuff about that 3DO game back in. it was a rad one and the music was so spot on for the time.
Man, Jailbreak was my favorite racing game ever when i was a kid, i remember playing the hell out of it with my cousin and just laughing out loud at everything. Also the slurs that the bikers screamed were so dumb and funny, the freaking jumping on cars was fun, the music was awesome, the glitches were hilarious, the fighting i thought was very satisfying, the co-op was so weird and creative, etc. I mean, i agree with all the problems about the game, but when you're a kid that stuff it's not a big deal, if anything the problems made the game more fun to me. Jailbreak never really didn't dissapointed me, i loved it. Great video!
I too had fond memories of Jailbreak, I never had the previous (the 1st,) Road Rash 3D on PSX/PS2, but played most or earlier Mega-Drive and Amiga 500M+ Road Rashes. I did like the co-controlled sidecar, which remaniscant of an earlier Amiga Sidecar Racer game. (which for its time had a custom track creator, I think it utilising a password/key track layout encoding & recreating-code, if not a save to storage.)
My best friend got a 3DO soon after launch and there was never a system that had a feeling of such dominant developers vs the rest. With the 3DO it was EA > Crystal Dynamics > 3DO Company > everyone else.
I loved these games, even the lackluster RR 3D on PS1, I still ate it up as a teenager. Though anytime I even think of the game I get Sugar Ray's "Speed Home California" stuck in my head, which isn't such a positive thing.
I'm 37 now and played road rash right when they first hit prominence. i would be in tears laughing over some of the insane crashes. it was a great game. the n64 wasnt visually spectacular, but it was just as funny as the first two and had some decent racing to boot. one such example of how funny it was: getting the rocket bikes and trying to do any of the original courses. crash city!!!! HILARIOUS!
One of my Older cousins & I knew this game to the 10th mile. Nothing less than first place, we had all weekenders playing this game.. There was no save function on Genesis! Than Came SKITCHEN!
Thank you for the original, and the expanded versions of this series, Daniel. I certainly mind you giving us longer videos as long as it doesn't bog down the overall story. I hope you do the Mutant League series next. :)
Loved this, Dan. Road Rash is a fantastic game, Road Rash 2 being my fave of the 16 bit era, I've never actually played Road Rash 3 though. I have had great fun with the PS1 port but after seeing that 3DO footage wow! I need that version now. Great stuff as always dude.
I love this game so much!! I still play the PS1 version regularly. Oh god I wish someone, literally anyone would make an updated version of this!.. maybe even a VR version ; )
Road Rash was my favorite game alongside need for speed underground 2(for the customization and drifting. Was a drifter and huge fan). Road Rash was a game that my buddy and myself would play for hours upon hours each day. We would play most of friday afternoon after our hockey game and then Saturday after our game and finally Sunday morning before we left for our third game of the weekend. That was every weekend from September to May. Every year. We fucking loved road rash
I absolutely loved the first three games on Sega Genesis, and when the 3DO version came out I wet myself. I was so thoroughly in love with this franchise. I was a big motorcycle fan and gamer at that young age, and this was as close as I was getting to a Honda CBR900RR. (Or cattle prods...) Great Video, thanks for the nostalgia
Love this video, Road Rash 2 is one of my favorites on the system. I used to play the first level and never progress by not racing just one of the tracks. Once I was all Nitro'd up and upgraded then I would move on and dominate the rest of the game. There were also some awesome codes to mess with too.
My problem with Jailbreak on GBA is that its only 4 racers on the road, making it feel empty also the crates made it seem like mario kart, so yea, nothing beats the genesis games.
Yeah, literally just played the first Need For Speed last night, still one of my favorites of all time. Granted through nostalgia glasses. When it came out in 95-96 it was stunning
Road Rash 64 is probably my favourite as it's the first I played. It's not as tight control wise as some other ones, but it was a blast with friends. The "Pet Rock" among other loser prizes always cracked me up as a kid. I also owned the Gameboy Color version which was pretty meh, but not terrible for the time.
Very nice review. I used to LOVE Road Rash on Genesis. I think Road Rash 2 was also my favorite one. This is actually a great timing to ask question about other ''drive and beat up others'' game - Twisted Metal. Have you thought or moved forward with it's history from last time we talked? So far, no Twister Metal complete history still on TH-cam. Once again, I think you would receive a massive interest to your channel with that, as there are no complete history for such a amazing game still. Anyway, absolutely love your channel and videos. Looking forward for the next one.
Props for listening to feedback and updating the video. The original version felt seriously lacking by glossing over the 3do version and its ports. With that fixed though, this is perfect.
No mention of Skitchin or the cancelled SNES port? Also, might be worth mentioning that the N64 Road Rash had NOTHING to do with EA. That was a THQ disaster.
Road Rash...FUCK YEAH. I actually played these games with my dad growing up. We had a great time, and as the years have gone by, I have grown to appreciate what the franchise brought to the table. Thank you for injecting this bit of nostalgia back into my mind.
Great video and a nice summary of the series. You just earned yourself a new subscriber. Your gaming history is suprisingly similar to mine, though the main games I loved to play back in the day on my megadrive, next to super hang on, the Road Rash series and the Strike Series(Desert-, Jungle- and Urbanstrike) were Rings of Power and Starflight. I still own all of my games from back then together with the notes my mother and I took back when playing these(you had to basically take notes because neither of these had any internal Logbook feature that would keep track of stuff to do).
My discovery of Road Rash is pretty much like yours. I'd heard of it but never tried it. Then it happened to appear in the local buy/sell/trade paper and I took a chance on it (I think I took a bigger chance picking it up...what a sketchy neighborhood). I was hooked immediately! Hooked so much that the series was a key reason I dropped full retail on a 3DO a few years later.
Road Rash 2, Road Rash (3do/pc/ps1), and Road Redemption make up my true Road Rash Trilogy. Honorable mention to the incredible SMS port of the original Road Rash.
I first got to know about Road Rash II when I seen it on the cover of EGM Dec. 1992 issue, the first of which I got in the mail. It had a foil holographic pic on it. I eventually tried RRII and I was hooked! Went back to try the first game and it was fun all things considered. Since then I have been a fan of the series and really want a true follow up on the modern platforms. Criterion should totally do it. I have tried Road Rage and I don't think it's THAT bad but it certainly wouldn't live up to it's spiritual predecessor. R.I.P. Chris Cornell...
I'm lucky enough to be of the right age to appreciate these games and these videos bring back fond memories for me, its great you obviously put in some effort and do some great research, so even if it's just me your videos really do brighten up an evenings viewing and bring back some great memories, so thanks love Slopes Gameroom.
A cool addition that RR3 added was the ability to carry more than 1 weapon at a time, as well as keep your weapons between races. I was a little disappointed that you didn't cover the Game Boy or Game Gear ports of the original, but overall I loved the video. Your "complete history" series is always top notch.
I've played Vette! Was quite fun, huge San Francisco map, running people over, police chases, taking any route you want to the finish. They could probably remake it. Road Rash is one of my favourite series of games. It's fun because you could be the cops in Jail Break.
When I was a kid, I didn't get to play Road Rash because I had a Nintendo/Super Nintendo at the time they came out. I can see the appeal it had because I like auto combat games like Carmageddon 2 and Mario Kart. Well done on another brilliant episode DJ Slopes. 🤘
No Game Gear mention? Not that it was a great game but thought I would mention it. I always wanted the GG version I just never bought it. I had 1,2,3 for Genesis and the 3 for PS1.
Had (still have) Road Rash 1, 2, and 3 for the Genesis as well as Road Rash for Windows 95. Bought Road Rash 3D for PSX the day it came out and was massively disappointed. Once you fall off your bike you just respawn in the middle of the road getting back on instead of running back to your bike was the first strike against it. Then attacking the other riders with weapons was damned near impossible, strike two. That was it, I didn't need anymore strikes to go get my money back, without those two things it just wasn't Road Rash anymore. Had the game less than 6 hours, it was that bad. Didn't even bother giving the one after a chance, glad I didn't waste my time. **Edit** I actually find myself playing 3 more often than 2, music is a little better, more weapons, and I like the gritty look of the digitized sprites.
Back in 2008 I took over the old EA offices that were in Warrington. Whilst I was sorting out the false floor for the LAN network I found a DVD-R with Road Rash written across it. I put it in a safe place, that I have now since forgotten about. I wish I'd checked that DVD out a bit better.
Still love the video, but I have to admit to being a little disappointed you didn't mention more about Skitchin'. Of course I could be wrong, but I thought that was a side project of the Road Rash team

The sequel is equally great, and though its got some extra additions, the level layout looks too familiar. Desert plains and Green country roads. I remember Mean Machines magazine (which I got Religiously) said that, yes RR2 is great but looks and feels too much like the first.
When yer 13/14 at the time, I didnt think about that though.😂😂 I was too busy loving the fact that you could wallop the Police now.😂
20years later i was talking to a guy about this, classic chain whipping and bat swinging.
not many people get this.
Glad I wasn't the only one that saw that
2:23 that music is instant nostalgia. Spent so many hours playing Road Rash II
DGeisler : " I just needed 20 years off, I'm ready to make an other one now " 🤣🤣
Man, Jailbreak was my favorite racing game ever when i was a kid, i remember playing the hell out of it with my cousin and just laughing out loud at everything.
These games bring back some incredibly fond memories. Time to dig them out and reminisce. Thank you, Daniel!!
That was a pretty quick re-edit! This is more thorough
My best friend got a 3DO soon after launch and there was never a system that had a feeling of such dominant developers vs the rest. With the 3DO it was EA > Crystal Dynamics > 3DO Company > everyone else.
Road Rash II nailed it, Iv'e played them all and two is the muts nuts.
HILARIOUS!
64 was the best
One of my Older cousins & I knew this game to the 10th mile.
Nothing less than first place, we had all weekenders playing this game..
There was no save function on Genesis!
Than Came SKITCHEN!
Thank you for the original, and the expanded versions of this series, Daniel. I certainly mind you giving us longer videos as long as it doesn't bog down the overall story. I hope you do the Mutant League series next. :)
19:18 there's a Christmas tree floating in mid air.
God bless you sir. I know some people don't care for this franchise (especially the first one) but I've always loved them. Great video, as always!
I would love a complete history of the Phantasy Star series
the first road rash had one the most amazing soundtracks I have ever heard.
Hahaha that little onaretrotip Easter egg at 20:17 - thought I was hallucinating for a second there!
So this is what clarkson does on his freetime
Loved this, Dan. Road Rash is a fantastic game, Road Rash 2 being my fave of the 16 bit era, I've never actually played Road Rash 3 though. I have had great fun with the PS1 port but after seeing that 3DO footage wow! I need that version now.
Great stuff as always dude.
Big thanks buddy, yeah that 3DO game is frikkin awesome
I love the Free Dee Ohhhh
ninteen eighty free.
I wish I had a free dee oh again.
Oh, somebody's being cheeky! Haha
Top Hat Gaming Man: Fwee Dee woah... Yer that other guy I subscribe....
We know you do THGM! (me too...)
Skitchin was badass.
mickeybill damn right. It's deeper and more difficult than Road Rash games. Not sure why it gets overlooked.
What is the music at 5:00? I can't remember where I heard it.
Nevermind, it's Marble Madness
I love this game so much!! I still play the PS1 version regularly.
Oh god I wish someone, literally anyone would make an updated version of this!.. maybe even a VR version ; )
And here's how it could be looking. th-cam.com/video/tvHz2u-33Y4/w-d-xo.html
Just found Road Redemption...😍💯 love it like I did Road Rash
Yep its really frigging hard though, eventually it eases once you unlock the permanent upgrades
@@Stuart267 I can't lie.. that's what makes it fun doe... but I haven't stop playing since I downloaded it..
9:40 We played these games so much you made me think I was going to miss my turn. The instinct is still there
Although this is your opinion, Road Rash 64 is by far the most enjoyable, those physics were hilarious
He didn't say Tiago Pierera dos Santos Silva....I didn't realize the video was over until an hour later.
Sadly. He is gone :(
Daniel Ibbertson wait...do you mean passed away? Because that would make my joke in seriously poor taste.
Hahaha i hope not. No, just no longer a patreon
Thanks Slopes! Another childhood favorite! Love these history editions! Take care mate!
What a great game series and EA as its best. I do hope Road Rash comes back one day and is treated properly. Great retrospective as well Dan!
Really appreciate it mate :)
Daniel Ibbertson No problem. Really great job as usual man!
No mention of Skitchin or the cancelled SNES port? Also, might be worth mentioning that the N64 Road Rash had NOTHING to do with EA. That was a THQ disaster.
You can't call them complete history if you don't include LITERALLY EVERYTHING Slopes!
Thanks so much for this Daniel. This is awesome.
This guy’s videos buffer ever 10 seconds. Doesn’t happen to anything else.
Road Rash...FUCK YEAH.
I actually played these games with my dad growing up. We had a great time, and as the years have gone by, I have grown to appreciate what the franchise brought to the table.
Thank you for injecting this bit of nostalgia back into my mind.
Brilliant video, big part of my childhood these games, always slowing down for the police to try and knock them off the bike 😁
Roadrash is love and an emotion ❤. But the hard work and research you have put into the video is absolutely remarkable 👌. Good job mate.
You did give a lot of these games a complete history
I'm lucky enough to be of the right age to appreciate these games and these videos bring back fond memories for me, its great you obviously put in some effort and do some great research, so even if it's just me your videos really do brighten up an evenings viewing and bring back some great memories, so thanks love Slopes Gameroom.
A cool addition that RR3 added was the ability to carry more than 1 weapon at a time, as well as keep your weapons between races.
I was a little disappointed that you didn't cover the Game Boy or Game Gear ports of the original, but overall I loved the video. Your "complete history" series is always top notch.
This game is like my childhood resumed, I used to play the PC version all the time with my sister. Had no idea is was a port of a 3DO game
I've played Vette! Was quite fun, huge San Francisco map, running people over, police chases, taking any route you want to the finish. They could probably remake it.
Road Rash is one of my favourite series of games. It's fun because you could be the cops in Jail Break.
was waiting with baited breath for Skitchen'
As always, DJ Slope doesn't disappoint
Good stuff, a well detailed history of one of my favourite games. Cheers.
Ironically, as old as it is, Road Rash for PC still runs perfectly on modern hardware and operating systems with one minor tweak.
Hey DJ slope, your videos are so well edited, imformative and well researched. How do you do it?
**Edit**
I actually find myself playing 3 more often than 2, music is a little better, more weapons, and I like the gritty look of the digitized sprites.
Road Rash II & 64 were GREAT
Back in 2008 I took over the old EA offices that were in Warrington. Whilst I was sorting out the false floor for the LAN network I found a DVD-R with Road Rash written across it. I put it in a safe place, that I have now since forgotten about. I wish I'd checked that DVD out a bit better.
Give me a Diablo and let me at Biff! :)
Still love the video, but I have to admit to being a little disappointed you didn't mention more about Skitchin'. Of course I could be wrong, but I thought that was a side project of the Road Rash team
Suggestion: *California Games* The complete History
I recently started this exact script! :)
Amazing! =O
Let's drop in on a grommet!
Grommet this! Grommet that!
The fuck does grommet mean?
Rodrigo Badin what is California games never heard of this.
6:20 what game is that on-screen? it's not the andretti game. I had that DOS game but can't remember the name. It wasn't mario andretti though.
That's Indianapolis 500: The Simulation from 1989.
Road Redemption is awesome, for anyone unaware of it's existence. Great, great spiritual successor.
