    Episode Notes:
    1. Footage captured via a Mega SG.
    2. If you are interested in the Mega Man X demos for the Genesis, get em here:
    drive.google.c...
    3. Contrary to popular belief, Visco did not entirely develop Chiki Chiki Boys on the Genesis. They were responsible for the sound and music.
    4. Visit romhacks.net for the Street Fighter sound patches.
    5. Strider on the Genesis has heavy data compression to fit into the 8megs. You'll notice a number of times during gameplay, it pauses to introduce new sound and graphics data.
    6. I so wish that Sega had continued to license Capcom properties after 1993. The Punisher, done by Sega themselves on the Sega CD, would have been killer.
    7. Capcom was interested in the 32X early in its life. They started development on Street Fighter The Movie, Darkstalkers, and Alien vs Predator. Of course, with 32X bombing, all projects were cancelled.
    8. Despite there rather poor support of the Genesis, they would go on to be prolific backers of both the Saturn and Dreamcast. So much so, I dare say those systems wouldn't have been the same without them.
    9. I make it sound like Chiki Chiki Boys is 2 player. It is in the arcade version. While editing I cut out a small section about the arcade. The "doubly so if you have a friend in tow" was actually connected to that. The Genesis game is single player only.

      Sega Lord X why did some carts have so much memory and others so few? If the Genesis can read both then why limit the games potential? Was it because chip prices were high and they wanted to bring in the finished product under budget to turn a profit?

    Konami and Capcom were the two premier arcade game makers and console third party publishers in the late 80s and early 90s and were pretty much Nintendo's second party devs due to being locked into monopolistic contracts. The only thing they were allowed to do for the other consoles was to sell the rights to port/reprogram their arcade games to Sega and Hudson/NEC Avenue. However, when Nintendo's monopoly was ended by a Japanese court, Konami fully embraced the creative freedom and the different hardware capabilities offered by the Mega Drive development, releasing a number of exclusive triple A games that took full advantage of the Mega Drive hardware (see: Rocket Knight Adv, Contra Hard Corps and Castlevania Bloodlines). On the other hand, as SLX said, Capcom was half-assing or outsourcing things from the start, wanting to grab some extra cash from the Mega Drive fans with the least amount of effort involved on their part.

    • @bitleman1
      @bitleman1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nintendo never stopped publishers to release games on other hardware. They just wanted to keep exclusives the content that was made for their hardware, which isn't really scandalous since the hardware back then were very different between the different consoles. So we got deifferent games instead of ports. And it's still a pretty standard practice these days with Sony and the exclusivity policy of the PS4.

      @@bitleman1 Nintendo ran a tight ship, they wouldn't let their own 3rd parties release games on their own schedule. Nintendo of America would only allow 3rd parties to release 5 games a year. Konami had create a sub label called Ultra games to circumvent this, Metal Gear, Skate or Die! and others were released under this label.

    • @overwatch761
      @overwatch761 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nintendo were bitches and always introduced some crutch, for example cheaping out on the SNES CPU to the stupidly powerful (for 95/96/97) N64 using tiny, restrictive carts.
      But Sega became too cocky and shot themselves in the foot. I loved my Mega drive however Sega started screwing over so many fans with massively overpriced and quickly terminated add ons.
      The Saturn was the biggest piece of flawed hardware ever released and a classic example of how Sega's big headedness led them to destruction - had Sega taken the revised SGI board that became N64 and combined it with CD, Sega would've completely obliterated Sony in graphics and Nintendo would have never made it to 3D. Saturn would have been the undisputed console of its era. I have no doubt the sight of Daytona, Sega Rally on CD running on the SGI board would have been arcade quality and had Sony put down early.
      That is the biggest mistake ever made in the history of the console industry.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joed5150 No, that's a retro gaming myth. Here we have another person who grew up only playing/hearing crappy sounding American games on the Genesis, made with the terrible "gems" sound driver.
      The Genesis/Megadrive was capable of excellent sound and music, the combination of FM synth and Psg sound created audio rich with bass, clear horns and guitars, often richer then many Snes counterparts despite the Snes trying to sound more "realistic", not always to the greatest effect. The Snes was absolutely more versatile with its samples esp for sound efx, but when it comes to raw clarity in sound, it was often a toss up and very competitive.
      Japanese exclusive games usually represented what audio the Gen could really push out...Master of Monsters, Gauntlet IV, Devilish, Thunder Force 3&4, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Sonic, and Shining Force series, Vapor Trail, Midnight Resistance, Monster World IV etc. Plenty of fantastic sounding games the Snes doesn't have an equal answer to, the same way the Genesis doesn't have an equal answer to Super Metroid or Chronos Triggers music.
      So the "Snes music far superior" is a trolling myth that needs to die, they both had stellar, albeit different sounding great music from exclusive Japanese games that holds up well.
      Check out "Savaged Regimes" TH-cam channel where he uploads remixes of Snes and Gen songs using original hardware like for Mega Man X, or his latest game for the Genesis "Xenocrisis" which released in 2019. Truly special stuff that destroys the 30yr old myth.

Crappy sound effects that often don't even match what's going onscreen. As far as slowdown is concerned, I've played plenty of Genesis games that chugged along. Of all of these games (of which I own all but Mickey), Forgotten Worlds has to be my favorite. Sega programmed the hell out of that game, and it has that late '80s arcade magic on spades. That game is flat out awesome.
    Chiki Chiki Boys I bought in 1999 at a store literally because of its ridiculous name on the spine. The label on my cart is torn to hell, so I had no idea what to expect from cover art... just that it was called Chiki Chiki Boys and it was $10. I went for it, and beat it that night. It's a killer little game that should get credit where it's due.
    Honestly, quite a few of my Genesis purchases in the late '90s were based on having goofy titles. Trampoline Terror, Tyrants: Fight Through Time, Burning Force, Fire Shark, Shadow Blasters, and more... I have no regrets. If it's on Genesis and has a strange sounding title, it's probably a good time.

      @MultiTarded Also Capcom's current representation of LGBT people is pretty terrible overall, their games are hardly shining beacons of progressiveness, and saying their old games had no LGBT characters isn't even true, what with Final Fight's Poison being transgender and Darkstalkers's Morrigan being bisexual (two somewhat problematic characters that I still really like), those are hardly obscure characters either, what a bafflingly ignorant comment on so many levels.
      But I get it the presence of characters who don't fit into your unimaginative jacked up heterosexual douchebag power fantasies make you extremely uncomfortable, I've heard this story many times before.

    Very neat video, thanks for the nostalgia!
    I used to have long arguments with my cousins back in the day over the quality of Capcom ports on the MD (Street Fighter specifically).
    They had a SNES and they usually flaunted that the Mega Drive was no rival of it, which used to drive me mad (yes, I was a very passionate Sega person then).
    Too bad the improvement patches weren't at thing at that point in time, or the sound quality issue would have been negligible (still, the Super Street Fighter port for the MD is still superior overall IMO; the SNES one is housed in a cartridge with less ROM, doesn't play as smooth and is even missing some narration samples, if memory serves).

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You remember correctly. One of the weirdest omissions from Super Street Fighter 2 on SNES is the voice saying "fight". It really throws me off. I remember the arguments in those days. In reality, when it came to Street Fighter 2(Champion/Turbo), the Genesis, SNES, and even PC Engine all had things going for them in each respective version and which was best would come down to what people valued the most. The Genesis version lacks the most in terms of first impression, colors and voices, but I think it plays the best, has the best music overall, and actually has more background graphics.

    The Genesis hardware comes off as a downscaled version of the CPS-1 hardware that a lot of Capcom's golden era games were developed on. Particularly the sound is very similar to the CPS but with way less memory for digital samples... the music in genesis capcom ports though always sounds very close to the arcade edition (particularly ghouls'n'ghosts, strider and SF2), and the stock digital drum "set" on the genesis HW seems to be the same as the CPS-1, even on non-capcom ports (minus the crash cymbal patch, genesis music almost never featured crash cymbals prob because the sample rate was too low and it would sound like a hot mess). Has anyone else ever noticed that the SNES editions of street fighter 2/SF2 Turbo didn't use the same SFX and voice samples as the arcade? They were re-recorded "soundalike" samples (seriously go compare all the SNES voices to the arcade, its all completely different).

    I'm glad this is a perspective into the genesis platform and a major developer, major for arcade games. And I think there's massive genius that the "thinkers" of sega at the time were making arcade ports... why? Because thats what people who bought home consoles wanted = as close as possible to arcade. What I don't understand was why some/most of these ports used way less memory than possible winding them up halfass? I'm also saying this as a regular viewr who's now educated thanks to you, X, thinking about Sega ports themselves. Shinobi. Golden axe. Etc. I think there was even a virtua fighter port and virtua racing CRAMMMED into a cart. Why not make the arcade ports use full potential and allow them to sing?? Why did fan made hacks need to improve these games and not Sega??

      Welcome to the "I love Sega but why the hell do they keep doing stupid things" club. Its amazing that they were even able to make hardware as long as they did with all the incredibly stupid decisions Sega had a history of making. I'm a big fan of Sega hardware, but all too often the topic of lost potential and missed opportunities comes up just as much if not more than the things that actually got executed.

      @@visionop8 I think that you are unfair with Sega. It'seasy to say that with the hindsight of the past. If they had only made stupid decisions they would never been leader in the arcade and never have rivalised with Nintendo. They made technological bets which were unsuccessful and unfortunately no companies are immune to this.

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Part of it was the business and sales aspects. It was more cost effective to keep cart sizes down. It would have been nice if they could have used more memory for many games, but there was always the cost consideration. Super Turrican on the SNES actually had content cut from the game because the publisher probably didn't see it being profitable going with the larger ROM. The game was later restored and released with Analogue's aftermarket SNES system. Another example is Mad Stalker which was almost finished for the Mega Drive, but was cancelled because 16-megabit ROM was considered to be too expensive to be profitable in that case.

    • @avivmizrachi4382
      @avivmizrachi4382 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ravagingwolverine help me understand this: Why was it more cost effective ? What makes it more cost effective? Pitting less chip and ram into the cartridge? Or putting less development time porting the game in more glory? What makes it add up?
      Doesn't it make more sense to make kickass games, thst everyone will sell well, that albeit may cost more to make but will bring in the sales? We're talking about undercutting the time and resources of making a 16 bit console also, and other waste for not selling its potential.... right?

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@avivmizrachi4382 Remember that there are aspects to the business of selling games that we just don't know. Back in the '80s and '90s, memory prices were high and they would fluctuate, meaning they might go back up or down. There were ROM chip shortages at some points. The whole point of home consoles, as opposed to arcades, was for games to be made using as little ROM as possible, because, again, memory was expensive. It was not practical to make games of unlimited size or the same as arcade games. Strider was an early eight-megabit game and it was more expensive than other games of its time. The same happened when 16, 24, and 32 megabit games were new. Limiting the size of games due to memory prices was just the nature of game development at the time. And remember, bigger ROMs and more development time was not a guarantee of sales. Sometimes, good games wouldn't sell, or bad games would. There are many factors.

    I mean look at how prolific Capcom became related to development on the SNES with Street Fighter Alpha 2. I mean that game was a straight up marvel for the console it was released on, regardless of extra chips in the cartridges. Even that is another showing of how during that 4th gen that they wanted to show Nintendo how committed they were to making their SNES look like an absolute men among boys. I truly feel to this day, lregardless of the short load times that SFA2 is the shining star of the SNES library. And I mean hell, Capcom HAD to have known going into development and then especially as release was about to roll out that the game was going to take a relatively significant financial loss. Between having to add expensive, newly developed chips to get the game running, to even giving the game a pretty small print run. That game was a love letter to Nintendo from Capcom as a thank you for the decade of profit their consoles provided them. It all just perfectly fits into place.
