I've never heard Anyone that could sing it better than Bobby Hatfield!!! The range & control he had with his voice is unmatched! Most guys have to strain to hit those high notes...watch Bobby's face when he's singing...smooth!!! He did this Live & No auto tune!!! He and Bill actually flipped a coin over who got to sing this song! lol

No one since this airing on live TV, no one has done this song justice in my opinion. They never reached the Plato that Bobby did it with this song. It will stand the test of time what perfection is.

I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Bobby was a contra tenor. There is probably one born in each generation. They are not always found. So I guess you could say he was touched by the angels. He doesn't have to force it. He doesn't need auto tune. He has the talent and the brains to know how to use his voice. He also had a head cold for this live performance.

@@ValenciaGamble it's not only the voice, it's also the words of the song. Back then music was felt not just heard. Music got into your heart and soul. I wish more young people could know how wonderful the music really was. This is why older folks don't really like the music of today. It's just hard and almost cold. I'm not saying the artists today are not talented, it just doesn't touch you the way it used to.

Bobby suffered from terrible stage fright but sang like an angel. That night his mum was in the audience thus the lip bite and look of relief. It's been covered hundreds of times but this is the best. You ought to go listen to Sam Cooke doing this, very beautiful.

It's my theory that the lip bite was decidedly for the ladies - I know he was a pretty down-to-earth and humble guy, but he had to be aware of the effect he had on women. I see it as a sort of wink and "aw shucks, ma'am" kind of thing. So cute!

This was a live performance on the Andy Williams show there were no do overs or auto-tone just his God given voice from the heavens above. His performance was effortless, smooth and sheer perfection no one will ever compare to Bobby Hatfield singing this song. Many artists before and after him have done this song but no one will ever do it better.this whole performance was sheer perfection. Biggest hit and played song they've ever had and only one brother in it the one that's usually in the background!!! Love seeing you get into the music for what it is though! Wow, I have to comment after seeing several of these videos, the presenters you can see are mesmerised by him and you can see in their eyes and face as they drift into their memories and relate to the lyrics, I'm 70 now and I am pissed that I only saw this recently but like everyone else I'm hooked and cannot stop looking at more.

When your face, "tightens up" with emotion, I recommend listening to a song called "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and the Drells from 1968. I think there's a dance that goes along with it. Your Mom will most likely know this song also. Keep on, keeping on...

Bobby Hatfield was an incredible talent, and, with this song, I think he made every woman feel like he was singing especially for them.
    Great reaction, Valencia. Be well.

Loved your your reaction...you just spoke from your heart with true heartfelt simplicity. You don't need alot of words , everyone can see what you are feeling and share in the experience of listening to Bobby. BTW, Bill was lead in "You've lost that lovin' feelining" because it required his bass voice. Bobby of course sang this song solo as no bass voice was needed. They are and always will be legendary!

You have had an introduction to one of the greatest voices of all time. Your reaction to his performance was typical of most women who hear this. He has other solos, all on You Tube. Here are a few: Only You, Somewhere, Ebb Tide, My Prayer, I believe. I feel sure upon listening to these, you will search out the rest of his songs. His style, filled with heart, soul and emotion will grab you and won't let you go. He is definitely one of a kind AND he certainly is pleasing to look upon. Cathy

    Absolutely loved your reaction!
“Unchained Melody” was written for a prison movie titled 'Unchained' (1955).
The lyrics were written from a prisoners perspective longing for his loved one he had left behind.
Bobby Hatfield (1940-2003) and Bill Medley make up the Righteous Brothers .
In 1965 on a live television program (The Andy Williams Show) Bobby Hatfield gave one of the greatest live television performances in history.
If you want to hear more of their great music, try: “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” which was the most played song of the 20th Century.
Also “Soul and Inspiration”, “Rock And Roll Heaven” and “Ebb Tide”, "Somewhere", "My Prayer", "I Believe", "Crying in the Chapel” and "Only You".

Love your reaction. If you want to watch a really fun video that makes you want to dance, listen to them do "What'd I Say" from the same Andy Williams show where Bobby sang Unchained Melody. They're having so much fun and it's really cute. You get to see their personalities. Also, check out Bobby doing "Summertime" Live. It's called "Bobby Hatfield - Summertime 1965. There's an HC-50 in the middle of the screen. Love your reactions. Keep it up:-)
