I’ve said this on another video about the werehog, but one thing I love about it is how it feels from a story perspective and making you feel how Sonic feels. Think about it, Sonic is used to running super fast, bashing enemies in a single hit with his speed. He feels comfortable and in his element like this. You feel like this too while in the day stages. During the night, Sonic is not in his element. He is trying to survive the night, and needs to start abandoning his preconceived ideas on how to do things and use the new powers he finds himself with. This is EXACTLY what the player is asked to do in the night stages as well. It just adds a new level of connection between Sonic and player and I think that’s so cool.
Definitely! I get the sense that I'm not *supposed* to like some parts of the WereHog at first, which makes mastery of his controls really satisfying; I just hope I can get past Chun-Nan Night sometime and get a feel for the rest of the game...
My favorite part about the Werehog is its final boss, the Egg Dragoon. Eggman spent decades working on it, carefully designing it to be the perfect counter to Sonic. It was built to combat something fragile, but fast and hard hitting. But in the end, the opponent he faces is slow, strong, and beefy. An immovable object, as opposed to an unstoppable force - the opposite of what the machine was designed to deal with - and it is easily destroyed by the werehog. And the best part is, he did this to himself; He had transformed Sonic into this beast. He created the perfect opponent to himself. (I also just think its cooler if sonic only won thanks to being the werehog, it’s just ironic and cool and awesome)
That'd be awesome, maybe one day we'll get a Sonic Warriors musou game. Then the sword can come back and let you actually slice through hundreds of enemies at once.
Maybe I’m crazy but I think it would be cool if we had a game with 2 story’s sonic’s and shadow’s with sonic using a sword and shadow using a gun Although they can’t just focus on the weapons though or The game will suck
I love him due to how utterly ridiculous he is. Instead of playing into the common werewolf tropes Sonic remains perfectly sane, he just gets more irritable (I find the scenes where he loses his cool just very funny for whatever reason). Half his attacks aren't even using his claws, more often than not he's just lobbing punches with his stretchy spaghetti dough arms. Also Jason Griffith's voice for him is fantastic (especially knowing the backstory of how he got to make a voice that gruff) and prime meme material.
I actually despised the werehog in the ps2 version of the game, so when I saw the 360/ps3 version and the werehog actually looked fun I could not understand why people didn't like it
@@zadock6370 that's kind of stupid since most games to have combat have button mashing. If you took time to learn the combos the werehog is the funniest gimmick
When i played the werehog after 4 years ... I realized how fun it actually was and wondered why people hate it? The werehog stages were easy, the only time i die is from platforming.
I remember loving Sonic Unleashed before it was cool, it used to be my absolute favorite Sonic game of all time before Generations came out. I think it might still be.
17:55 I still think those bee's should be a lot easier to actually hit, but you can easily just grab and throw them even when they're at full health as a work-around.
I swear from memory you could only do that when they were downed or maybe it just proves inconvenient when in a very hostile area. I do believe your memory serves to be better though.
I remember saying when I was finished with Sonic Unleashed that I expected history to be a better judge of the game than people were at the time. I feel like I was right.
I always had hope that someday, someone would make a video like this. In fact, there's even one more thing the game doesn't tell you. The Werehog can actually perform stealth attacks. Happy to see some Werehog appreciation, great video!
@@itachisusanoo3689 Yep, if you get close to an enemy without getting noticed you can press the QTE button to perform the stealth attack, only the big ones tho, like Egg Fighters and Nightmares
HOLY CRAP I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT SO MANY OF THESE COMBOS!!! I knew like three or four, and that already spiced the game up enough for me to enjoy it a lot. Now I wanna go back and play the Werehog sections again and try out all these combos, especially with the platforming too!
Here's 2 of my favorites: while running with the trigger pressed, jump and press triangle (y) in the air. With that you'll spin forward and hit all of the enemies right in front of you, also it's pretty fast. Another one is to hold either square (X) or triangle (Y) down, then Werehog will start charging an attack, when ready just release the button. With square he'll do a spin that takes down any enemies around you, the other one literally destroys any enemy in front of you (this is the strongest attack of the game).
I have only played the PS2 version of this game. I played the living heck out of this game to the point of unlocking everything the game has to offer TWICE over. This is my favorite Sonic game. I like how Sonic is portrayed, I like the story, I love the day stages and even the night stages are a nice change of pace, I like pretty much everything this game has to offer. When I was growing up, I wasn't the kid to constantly yell "chaos control," I was the kid to run around like Sonic during the day and act like the werehog during the night. This game is really what jumpstarted my love for Sonic. This game will forever have a place in my heart. I also want to play the PS3 version, but I don't have the system.
In a recent playthrough, I realized the aerial piledriver attack does damage to surrounding enemies, and the Werehog combat finally clicked. You _can_ mash to victory, but it's so much faster to strategize.
I remember when I finished every hotdog stand mission in eggmanland, just to find out how easy it is to glitch through the level after all those lives lost 😭
This is just a guess but I think the reason Sonic has stretchy arms as the Werehog is due to the fact that he gained powers from the Dark Gaia energy. For example in the night stages you can see the enemies stretching their limbs out to attack Sonic, he basically gains that power.
GREAT video! Love the callback to the debate with Matt at the end! I only wish Sonic team patched in a text box that reminded players to try out the different combos! Alternatively to make enemies later in the game immune take no damage from the basic combos (to encourage players to use the more advanced combos). (Would've been nice to remove the slow box-carrying/pushing sections, as well as cutting the level length in half for an "easy mode") Also, huge missed opportunity to mention Prof. Pickle's tip of pressing the jump after a ledge-grab to carry momentum in the platforming!
Thank you for this video! I always talk among my real friends about those who praise Unleashed for the day stages but diss the night gameplay. Honestly I still say I would love the Werehog to return with Platinum Games to influence the idea.
I dunno what people are talking about... Little kid me thought it was cool as heck for Werehog Sonic to beat the living snot out of dark gaia monsters. It was raw as heck.
The Werehog was actually the highlight for Sonic Unleashed when I played it all those years ago. I played Sonic Unleashed again a couple of months ago, and the Werehog is still so much fun to play as. Using different combos and seeing those fantastic animations and damage come out of them is still one the most satisfying things I've done in any video game.
The werehog idea was an amazing way to freshen up the sonic games IMO. reminds me of Sonic and the Secret Rings when they went with a new super sonic idea (that was SPONTANEOUS for me as a sonic fan) Also, you REALLY nailed the thumbnail art!!
He can be fast if you know how to use him correctly and one move that always helps out is Spinning Needle Attack, it's literally the Boost but built more for combat and not bound to a Ring Energy Gauge.
I really enjoyed the werehog and all of Sonic Unleashed honestly. There were some moments when movement was awkward but I remember the fun moments being a lot more frequent than the moments of frustration.
1. Exp is shared between Sonic and the Werehog, so you want to spend your points on the Werehog in the beginning. 2. Leveling up combat gives you more combos, and leveling up strength and health makes the game easier. 3. You can cancel any attack by hitting the shield button. 4. You can use the "aerial spin" move to gain horizontal distance when in the air. This is useful for platforming sections Thanks for the video!
I really appreciate the work you put into this video, thank you for that. I personally grew up with this game and it was the game that got me into the Sonic franchise. I really think the game doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Another reason why I like the Werehog a lot is because you can truly take the time to appreciate the beautiful level design instead of just speeding through it in the daytime levels. There namely was so much detail in every corner of the game. Keep up the good work! :)
Sonic unleashed has to be my favorite sonic game ever it’s just so different, engaging and has amazing cutscenes and great music. I grew up with the some of the older sonic games like SA2 and sonic unleashed. Also I don’t know why but every time I play sonic unleashed I just find my self enjoying the werehogs combos so satisfying. Challenge yet rewarding game super underrated in my opinion should give a try.
Anyone else play the night stages solely because of the music (minus the monotonous enemy battle music that pierces your ears each time)? Nighttime Windmill Isle and Rooftop Run are so relaxing
There is one thing that a lot of people don't know. Unleashed mode allows the shield to block anything, making the titans earthquake attack way easier to deal with
I groan every time I know I have to play a werehog stage because he’s so clunky, the stages suck, and the enemies have janky hit boxes. Even knowing the move set doesn’t make it fun, it just makes it tolerable. The day stages are some of the best stages in franchise so it sucks that you have to slog through the night stages to get them.
I have completed sonic unleashed without upgrading the werehogs strength, it really made me scratch my head and allowed me to appriciate the game to an even bigger extent
Hey! this is a very nice video about the werehog! i really like how you went kinda in depth with his combat mechanics because this is the best combat in a sonic game i ever saw, yes is slow, yes is clunky, yes the aspect is totally bonkers and unnecessary but its a sonic game after all.
I always love the Werehog combos and gameplay. I only hate the Night Time stage in Empire City due to the balance the crumbling rails with spikes, that ruins it for me.
Having seen more hd gameplay, I would honestly say I think the wii version may be slightly better. It's just less frustrating in terms of progression. No medals or rather you get them based on rank. Linear upgrades which just streamlines the whole process. And each level has a more appropriate length. I want to get the ps3 version at some point to say I've played both.
People complain about the gimmicks from the so-called Dark Era. Which is ironic since the Sonic series has been about moving forward. And that includes experimenting with the format more. And that includes the examples you brought up.
i love watching your videos too and i like Sonic The Werehog a lot and i like his attacks a lot and i like Day Stages and Night Stages in Unleashed too.
I will admit: the duality of daytime stages where you have to be fast and furious and the nighttime stages where you have to be slow and precise makes for some pretty interesting gameplay once you adjust your mind to it.
I still can't believe that the way in which you cleanse the darkness out of people in that game is actually referred to as "exorcising them", not only is it metal and kind of spooky given the term's historical connotations, its also a really neat little pun to go along with how fast Sonic is.
If you unlock all the combos (the Chun-nan hub world glitch helps a lot in this) then it doesn’t matter what you press to attack, you’ll be using the combos anyway. If you don’t wanna be stuck doing the same combo despite unlocking all of them, I suggest randomising the two attack buttons (X and Y on Xbox) and how often you press them. This not only makes the werehog more enjoyable, it also saves time especially if you upgrade your strength as well. Instead of levelling up everything about the werehog like I did, I suggest focusing on levelling up combat, strength and life.
I played the Wii version of Unleashed growing up, and younger me thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. And thanks to the Night stages in these games, they helped get me into games like Hyrule Warriors and the Bayonetta series. Also, I kind of like to think that younger me felt like he was playing Wii Sports boxing when it came to the Night Stages' combat, which I weirdly loved. 😅
If the Werehog gameplay and level stage took direct inspiration from Devil May Cry rather than God Of War, then I think it’d be more generally praised, especially when there’d otherwise be a pretty cool but surprisingly fitting contrast between the high-speed reaction-based action-platforming of the Daytime levels and the high-speed reaction-based hack-and-slash combat of the Nighttime levels.
Heck yeah!!! The Werehog is one of my favorites transformations. I just appreciated the long hours put on beating the nighttime levels more than the daytime
The first 3D sonic game I got and actually grew up on, as funny as it may seem that it was a gateway to how Sega wanted to take Sonic and his mechanics to the future. I agree to all the points mentioned about the werehog since, my first time playing (only had the ps2 version) I was more scared of Day time stages for how clumsy I am with fast pace gaming. But when the werehog stages came, I grew into it since I grew up with combat base games. Granted the first time playing I had horrible handle when finishing the game, but then I picked up the game again during quarantine, and massively improved in both day and night stages overall, because I took the time to explore around the maps and learning the movesets of both sides. The werehog is underrated, I love the fuzzball for a game that basically introduced a great story, friendship, and mechanic to the boost formula. Just don't trigger the *jazz music* haha
Basically, when playing the Werehog, you gotta think about playing as Nero instead of Sonic. Some people might ask why not Dante, well, it's because Sonic has grabs, no weapon switching, finishing moves and no SDT (but a normal DT in Unleash mode).
personally, i always liked the werehog missions they were a nice change of pace from the high-speed day sections, which usually were too fast for 8 year old me plus, despite the lack of speed, the whole combo system and the puzzles coupled with the night time atmosphere made it feel a tad relaxing
For me, I was literally sweating when fighting the enemies as the werehog. I was only annoyed at dragon road because of the stupid platforming is annoying in that level.
Unleasehed was my first 3D sonic game along with colors way back in 2011. When I learned people weren't so fond of Unleashed, I kinda got mad but was always too afraid to talk about it. I had the Wii version and still enjoyed the game so I knew without a doubt that other people could've enjoyed it. It's a swag game with swag gameplay, combat system wasn't the best but it was enjoyable
I've always loved the werehog's gameplay, on both versions. Unwiished, and Unleashed. I liked the gameplay the most from the levels. Also, the music in the night stages... Chef's kiss...
Great breakdown of the Werehog. Still weird how people complain about this unconventional gameplay when the Adventure era is filled with that. Two things though: 17:55 The bees aren't bugged, they just dodge a lot, that's the whole point of this enemy. To hit them you have to wait for an attack or use a move with a lot of coverage and hitboxes 18:00 Come on, you're literally running into the shockwaves. If you got to Eggmanland without figuring out that you have to shield or jump over them, that's on you
Frankly, I never had the problem with 30 minute Werehog stages since I played the Wii version, but it was my first true Sonic game and holds a special place in my heart.
Sonic unleashed is a masterpiece, it manages to be difficult but also a lil easy to fans, the story is a chef's kiss, and one of the most underrated characters ever, aka chip, i hate how chip was just there for one game and gone, unleashed has it's own way of being unique, everything about it is awesome.
With this games bad reputation from the backlash it has lost a feeling that makes the older games a joy for me which generations could never bring back. Thank you for giving my favourite game ever a chance for you to warm up to it.
I hated Eggmanland my first play through but I’ve actually grown to love it. The reason being Eggman has been trying to create Eggmanland or Robotnikland for years and he’s finally done it with the stakes the highest they’ve ever been (other than 06 but that technically never happened 👀). With the shift in tone and character afterwards, I actually consider Unleashed to be the grand finale of everything Sonic has done up to that point. So the difficulty of the game (the pinnacle of that being Eggmanland) is actually welcome to me. It’s a earned send off to the character I love
As someone who has never played Unleashed (or honestly most console Sonic games actually), I freaking LOVE the Werehog. My first introduction to him was in the "Night of the Werehog" when I was younger and I personally loved it a lot. I think it's a cool concept honestly, and if Sega were to bring him back for a future game, if done right, he would make a great addition y'know?
Honestly I enjoyed the Werehog A LOT it might be only me, but the way you fight feels really fun and satisfying. Yes, it does have a lot of flaws, but it's not as bad as lots of people think.
Sonic Unleashed was the first Sonic game i ever played, so all i can say is that i love the game. I played the game on the PS2 and i love everything about the game, the music, the levels, and the werehog gimmik
I played Unleashed when it came out. My brothers and I loved the game, even the Werehog since we love hack 'em slash and beat 'em up games. I never understand when dudes came saying that the Werehog gameplay is horrible and stuff, but most people played the Wii version at the time. They never played the HD version or not even cared, just rolled out with the meme of saying that is bad because it's Sonic and the critic said so. My only problem with the Werehog is the music, I think that some heavy metal would be cooler for his appearence, but that's just my taste.
The bit in this video where Chaomix played metal over the Werehog thrashing made me seriously wish they did some metal songs or at least something that went way harder for the Werehog's music instead of the spontaneous jazz band. Would have set the mood a bit better and would have been even more Sonic like.
I'm pretty sure the Wii Werehog combat is the same as the HD versions. If anything they're better since they're split up to smaller stages since the stage length are still a problem, and there's little to no lag compared to the HD versions
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks! Sonic Unleashed came out the same year as my birth year do I really want to love it. Shittily playing the werehog is an obstacle for adoring this game, but one I'll over come.
the thing that holds the werehog back the most is the leveling system being the main way to get new combos, not knowing about that a specific bar on the werehog is the way to get them always seemed like a massive oversight and i would have honestly preferred if they just gave them to you over time instead
you describing the werehog mechanics reminded me of sonic the fighters yea you can theoretically spam punches but thats just gonna be boring, take too long and be tedious knowing combos is how you have fun with it
Oops. Back to the drawing board for my debut Sonic video lmao. Happy to see some love for Werehog gameplay. I'm 100% sure everyone's first run of Unleashed rarely had any S Ranks, or fast runs in the stages. Replaying stages is always a big part of Sonic games. Getting better, and tearing it up is a constant for the series in my eyes, and the Werehog levels still pushes players to do the same. Would love a PC port tho fr...
I've always wanted a 2 Player mode where you play as Tails during the day (slower but can fly) and Knuckles at night (no stretch but can glide and slowly climb).

@@Yes-qj1kf I made my comment as a joke to another person, but he deleted his comment.
I 100% agree with you.
It's cursed yet awesome seeing the heccin werehog in that art style.
The werehog actually looks scary I like that
There's official Adventure style artwork of the Werehog so I don't how it's cursed but each to their own...
Chaomix is an amazing sonic the hedgechog TH-camr he is super honest about his opinions even if I don't agree
Happy to see some Werehog appreciation, great video!
what? stealth attacks?
@@itachisusanoo3689 Yep, if you get close to an enemy without getting noticed you can press the QTE button to perform the stealth attack, only the big ones tho, like Egg Fighters and Nightmares
@@dsjkk yooo I just tried it and its true!! Thanks a lot! Thats really cool!
Uh, a lot of people did, for 6 years. And you keep pretending that it's 2008. Or Unleashed is still hated.
@@ShockwaveFPSStudios When did I say Unleashed is still hated lmao, just enjoyed his video, chill out
*Me who's loved the werehog from day one*
Seeing the werehog in the adventure is really interesting, really like how you did him
HOLY CRAP I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT SO MANY OF THESE COMBOS!!!
Finally a Werehog appreciation video! Have been waiting for something like this for a long time now
I have only played the PS2 version of this game.
It was great working with you! I am happy to have sponsored the channel! And I am excited for Pumpkin Hill reveal!

This is just a guess but I think the reason Sonic has stretchy arms as the Werehog is due to the fact that he gained powers from the Dark Gaia energy.
For example in the night stages you can see the enemies stretching their limbs out to attack Sonic, he basically gains that power.
@TheNewPatoWaluigi Which is why he's part Minion.
Dude Truthfully I Literally Love This Video. Werehog has always been one of my favorite gameplay styles of any sonic game. So Well Done Bro!
Okay but like, I've always loved playing as the Werehog
GREAT video! Love the callback to the debate with Matt at the end! I only wish Sonic team patched in a text box that reminded players to try out the different combos! Alternatively to make enemies later in the game immune take no damage from the basic combos (to encourage players to use the more advanced combos). (Would've been nice to remove the slow box-carrying/pushing sections, as well as cutting the level length in half for an "easy mode")
Also, huge missed opportunity to mention Prof. Pickle's tip of pressing the jump after a ledge-grab to carry momentum in the platforming!
I love the werehog it allows me to change pace the only thing I would change would to even out the game for more daytime stages and that’s it
Thank you for this video! I always talk among my real friends about those who praise Unleashed for the day stages but diss the night gameplay. Honestly I still say I would love the Werehog to return with Platinum Games to influence the idea.
I remember back in the day thinking werehog sonic looked scary and cool. But now I just find him freaking adorable. He looks so fluffy and petable.
I've only ever owned and played the Wii version, which I loved. This really makes me wanna try the HD version!
You broke it down better than ANYONE ever has on TH-cam. THANK YOU. Subscribed.
This is the best and most polished gimmick/alternative gameplay style/mechanic in the franchise
*Change my mind*
I refuse to change your mind. Your mind is Sane.
The werehog idea was an amazing way to freshen up the sonic games IMO. reminds me of Sonic and the Secret Rings when they went with a new super sonic idea (that was SPONTANEOUS for me as a sonic fan)
Also, you REALLY nailed the thumbnail art!!
Hehe, nailed the thumbnail….that was definitely unintentional, trust me
He can be fast if you know how to use him correctly and one move that always helps out is Spinning Needle Attack, it's literally the Boost but built more for combat and not bound to a Ring Energy Gauge.
This is useful for platforming sections
Thanks for the video!
The thing for PS2/Wii Version is Shield is unbreakable.
Honestly if the werehog had no combat and was just a collectathon platormer, it would be the best part of the game.
Why cant it be both. They just need to make the combat faster and Better.
I love the combat.
That wouldn’t work. Can’t just get rid of something like that.
@@kaidenwanna3209 what do you mean?
Or combat only for bosses
Unleashed mode allows the shield to block anything, making the titans earthquake attack way easier to deal with
how to werehog in a new save:
1. level up combat only until at least the spinning needle attack
2. then do the rest of the werehog stats
Finally someone else who appreciates the Werehog. It was my favorite part of the game
Tbh, if you hate the wherehog then that's a skill issue. Cos the werehog is ballin' and goated with the sauce.
15:30 I don't need to pause. Kingdom Hearts already made me memorize the dualshock buttons
Pro tip: throw boxes at enemies. It’s so satisfying, for real. Also it does more damage.
It’d be hated anyways tbh
Heck yeah!!! The Werehog is one of my favorites transformations. I just appreciated the long hours put on beating the nighttime levels more than the daytime
I always saw that the Werehog is like SSJ4 in terms of looks and brute strength.
Even though i was stuck with the wii version i still love this game
Some people might ask why not Dante, well, it's because Sonic has grabs, no weapon switching, finishing moves and no SDT (but a normal DT in Unleash mode).
personally, i always liked the werehog missions
they were a nice change of pace from the high-speed day sections, which usually were too fast for 8 year old me
plus, despite the lack of speed, the whole combo system and the puzzles coupled with the night time atmosphere made it feel a tad relaxing
I've always wanted to play the HD version of Sonic Unleashed. Never owned a 360 or PS3 and my computer can't emulate it.
Two things though:
17:55 The bees aren't bugged, they just dodge a lot, that's the whole point of this enemy. To hit them you have to wait for an attack or use a move with a lot of coverage and hitboxes
18:00 Come on, you're literally running into the shockwaves.
I loved playing the werehog a lot. It kinda aligns with Tomb Raider, Portal, or shadow the hedgehog (combat purposes).
Sheeeeeesh! This Is my FAVOURITE thumbnail for a Sonic video!!! Too good!
Honestly I enjoyed the Werehog A LOT
it might be only me, but the way you fight feels really fun and satisfying.
Yes, it does have a lot of flaws, but it's not as bad as lots of people think.
18:00 flashbacks of me never being able to clear Unleashed as a kid because of those titans constantly jumping and making me rage quit.
