I was lucky enough to spend a few hours in the hotel bar at the old Chicago Con in the late 80s with John Totleben, and he could not have been a nicer, friendlier guy.
Loved the cover discussion about this issue. I am SO fucking sick of modern comic covers NOT saying anything about the story. How many covers are just the main character standing there doing nothing, saying nothing..almost all of them!
Every time Lovecraft has come up over the last 18 months Ed gets more and Moore excited. This can only be leading up to episodes that put “Providence” under the microscope and I couldn’t be happier. -Thanks for the great content!
Lots of stippling in Alan Moore's own early art for music magazines and such; in fact, he belittles his work partly for that. But it's actually pretty rich stuff. Are you familiar with the color comic he made as an insert for Dodgem Logic about 10 years ago? "Astounding Weird Penises" has an intense, Robert Williams-style, stippled chrome giant sun god. Pretty awesome.
These issues of Miracleman stand in contrast to Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened To The Man of Steel". In the latter Superman abdicated his powers to become a normal man whereas in Miracleman he chooses to reshape the world in his image. In the Superman story Lex Luthor and Braniac's ideology is totally repudiated while Miracleman in some way fulfills Gargunza's idea of "The Superman" remaking the world and his desire for immortality.
this got me to reread swamp thing no. 53. totleben draws the best superheroes, even if they look like goobers sometimes. (probably because they look like goobers sometimes.)

After this and the last weekly shoot I’m curious what Ed keeps to the upper camera left... I’m guessing artist editions based on this context?
