I love that Anne and her stepdaughters were on good terms and that Anne and Elizabeth rode in a carriage directly behind Mary when she was crowned queen... and that it is thanks to Mary that Anne was accorded the honour of being buried at Westminster.

Although Anne Boleyn is my favorite of Henry's queens, I think I have the most respect for Anne of Cleves. She seems to have been so respectful and dignified given her treatment, I find her to be extremely interesting, she tried very hard to please Henry by learning to speak English and about his hobbies so they had things in common to share. She really was a dutiful wife and queen and I think it's obvious that Henry saw this in her indicated by the generous settlement he gave her. She was a truly fascinating Tudor figure.

Each of his wives is my favorite, for her own reasons, though I suspect Anne of Cleves is at the top of the list. Bessie Blount is probably at the bottom of the list, though a) she doesn't count as one of his wives and b) I know very little about her and I'm sure more knowledge would pique my interest in her.

She's my favourite of Henry's wives. She definitely knew how to play the game of "How to Handle Henry", and she thrived because of it. After their annulment, he referred to her as Our Beloved Sister, was one of Henry's most trusted advisors, was a frequent member of his court, and was richly rewarded financially for not making a fuss over the annulment. She was a smart woman, and she did very well for herself.

Anne of Cleves got to keep her head, lived the rest of her days in wealth and luxury, maintained a good relationship with Henry and his family and outlived Henry and his wives. Also she is the only wife to be buried at Westminster Abbey.

Next, William married Maria of Austria, niece of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V.

Well that certainly was a fascinating and informative fact video. 👍😍
I actually wasn't familiar with alot of these facts as like Jane Seymour, I assumed there wasn't much to know about her.
Abit surprising that the Flanders Mare/ Horse story isn't true as it's the main story attributed to Anne.
I had always assumed that Anne of Cleves was only wife not to have an English family connection.
The fact that Anne was a keen cook is certainly a new fact to me although there is a portrait of her with something like an orange..
Very sad that Anne never saw her family and homeland again and never remarried or had children. She evidently couldn't have it all sadly.

In fact, it is mainly a translation error. It must be the peaceful one. In Dutch-Flemish history and also in the Dutch version of Wikipedia it goes as follows: John III, Duke of Cleves and Count of Mark (John III, Duke of Cleves; John I, Duke of Jülich-Berg; German: Johann III der Friedfertige, Herzog von Jülich-Kleve-Berg; 10 November 1490 - 6 February 1538 or 1539), called John the Peaceful, was a son of John II, Duke of Cleves and Mathilde of Hesse, daughter of Henry III, Landgrave of Upper Hesse.[1]

Duke John had an instinct for balance as was shown when he married his eldest daughter Sybille to John Frederick of Saxony. John Frederick would go on to later head the Schmalkaldic League. In many ways John of Cleves' court was ideal for raising a Queen. It was fundamentally liberal, but serious-minded, theologically inclined, and profoundly Erasmian, as the court of Catherine of Aragon had once been. It was from this court that his daughter Anne would be raised. Anne would go on to marry King Henry VIII of England as his fourth wife. =

I was taken aside and questioned as to whether or not I was being coerced into marriage. I explained that I objected to the cold sterility of the courtroom. 7:26 =Chotto matte kudasai!!!! Wait a minute... But I remember Anne of Cleaves bequeathing her assets to her "Stepdaughters". If she can't marry, how TF did she get "stepdaughters" all of sudden? Are they Mary & Elizabeth?

Yes, she was referring to Elizabeth and Mary.

🇭🇲🦘 Oh, I loved this so very much. 💕 The beautiful Anne of Cleves being my 'favourite' of King Henry VIII's 6 wives. Loved hearing about her interest in cooking. Also ...
.. given todays 'shorts' topic, maybe if Anne had baked Henry a cake (and he enjoyed it) he may have liked her, instead of "liking her not"! .. I'm also ...
... so pleased that she was buried in Westminster Abbey. I believe this was arranged by Queen Mary I, as Anne had been quite liked by both Mary and Elizabeth (so I believe). ..
.. The two Anne's being my favourite wives of King Henry VIII - not that he deserved either of them. .. BOTH such lovely ladies who could have led wonderful lives if they hadn't been drawn into King Henry's life. Anne Boleyn to die so young and tragically, whilst Anne of Cleves never permited to re-marry but dying of natural causes. Thank you so much Claire ❤👑👍

☘️🍀 For once I actually didn't know many of the facts compared with Claire's other Fact videos. Like Jane Seymour, I assumed there wasn't much to know about Anne of Cleves.
A pleasant surprise that Anne wasn't actually called a Flanders Mare or a horse. It's the main story most attribute to Anne.
Very sad Anne never saw her family and homeland again and never remarried and had a family of her own. ☘️🍀

@@marionarnott750 from what I've read, she was not free to marry.. she was considered the kings royal sister and was at his service up until he died in 1547.. once he was dead, she could have asked Edward to marry but she never asked...

Anne would lose all her goodies to a new husband. She did right well as The King’s Sister! Probably better than his blood sisters.

@@warrengwonka2479 Apparently (from what experts like Claire have indicated) Anne of Cleves DID truly grow to love King Henry VIII (believe it or not) and when Henry then married his 6th and final wife (Catherine Parr) Anne was devastated as she had still hoped to remarry the king. cont...
You see, regardless of everything, Anne and the king had become real friends. He would often visit her to dine, talk and play cards. Anne was also always still invited to Court for festive events as 'family'. So, given that Anne loved him, I doubt she would have married another, even when she was free to do so. cont...
If she had 'fallen in love' with another, and her hand in marriage asked for (and permission granted by the crown, even when Edward was king) Anne may have married. However, this never eventuated. Anne remained single, and happy with her 'lot' in life and her life in England with many friends (including the kings three children) and led a busy life with her many charities until her death. cont...
Quite a remarkable woman. Coming from the continent to an unfamiliar England, but finding 'her place' in society and living her life (as well as she could) until her death. Mourned by many when she died having outlived ALL of Henry's wives, as she had Henry himself.

Henry likely exaggerated Anne being unattractive due to his own impotence and her lack of understanding of English customs. After all, by this time, he was far from the athletic handsome prince he’d been when he took the throne.

That is a lot of children to father. How many women did her grandfather have children with? How did he afford to take care of all of his children?
