I temember when this song first came out. I was in high school then. As a kid who was badly bullied by classmates and some family this song touched me deeply.
Written by Kelly and Stienberg. While she was working on this album, a very close friend of hers died from aids. So she arranged the song as a way to comfort and heal grieving people. That child like voice is very much intentional. The video is more complicated. The drumming symbolizes an ancient storyteller. Then there is the imagination of a child, and comming of age as a woman. The woman on the left in the boat is her mother. The man is her then boyfriend/manager Dave Wolf. You're barely scratching the surface here. She goes from Rockabilly to EDM to Broadway with stops at Blues and Country along the way. Check out 'Best Live Vocals' just as a sampler.

This song was the reason for the LGBT+ community rainbow song. She sang it because her friend died of AIDS and afterwards, the man who developed the idea for the flag said it was this song that inspired him to do it.

The evening I first heard this song on the radio (no visuals but my own) it later, once again, came to me that God speaks with us in many ways. In fact, I didn’t at first realize the radio was even on because God, thru the song, was speaking directly to me, to my heart. A beautiful warm hug. He loves your true colors too.

This #1 Hit from Cyndi Lauper, is a great beautiful song that decades after became a huge gay anthem. Another beautiful song from Cyndi is "Above The clouds" perhaps a reaction of the song in a near future. Agree Cyndi Lauper have a beautiful voice.
