Being in the DIY retail space myself, and imagining the amount of work it is for Jimy to meet the demand, outsourcing just makes sense. Especially since it appears the quality was retained if not improved. On the tang debate, I'm pro-full tang. I think it's just the more logical solution to the engineering problem. Does it matter in practice, as you pointed out? No. I'm just the type of person that appreciates when someone takes the engineering in their products seriously though. Jimy does, for sure
Love the old school stories. Keep them coming. Steve Arnold’s was an interesting catalog for sure. Of particular interest to me were the Pickmasters tools. Those sets were incredible and I wished I had bought them but that was a lot of money back then. I bought a pick gun from popular science classified ads in 1986. I broke the needle of course there were no replacements. Next I went to the library to find books on locksmithing. I found out about locksmith trade magazines so subscribed to both. Once I did that I started ordering all the catalogs for distributors of lockpicks and supplies. The distributors were more than happy to take money orders with a professionally typed letter and it opened the door to the real tools -HPC Rytan LAB Pro Lok as the most dominant ones with Rytan being the best back then. Still have those sets too.
I always look forward to your videos. I can't believe I just listened to this whole video even though I already intend to pick up a few more sets from Jimylongs! Oh well, thanks for sharing your stories. I look forward to hearing more. Abracadabra
Abra cadabra bro! When I saw this was an hour long, I said to myself, there's no way I'm gonna watch all this, but here I am.... enjoyed every minute, and the video just ended, as I'm typing this comment. Good stuff
Abracadabra sandman, glad to hear you're getting better and also great video as always. I love to watch these type of videos because they're kind of like a podcast but for locksport news lol and I'll always enjoy the locksport report videos as much as any other video you provide for us. I'm stoked for the new jimylongs picks and after seeing them in this video I'll definitely be picking up some sets when they drop because they look fantastic!
Hey, I hope you're doing well. As always, this video was fantastic. I’m really sorry you’re still dealing with health issues, and please never worry about your speech or anything during the videos - you’re doing an amazing job. I could honestly watch these all day. They're incredibly informative, and you put so much heart into everything you do. On a side note, I just wanted to thank you - I earned my purple belt last week, and I truly credit you for helping me get there! From your tool recommendations to the encouragement and guidance, you've really motivated me. Thank you for all you do. We all appreciate you not just for the help, but for the kind, genuine person you are. And here’s an abracadabra, not for free stuff, but because I don’t have a wife and kids to keep me busy, haha.
Great video! I've been wanting to order a set for a long time now and I just got my first set! Totally agree with the mentality on the full-tang vs part-tang with feedback. I prefer full-tang over the partial-tang though, they should hold up better and better distribute the stress from the pick head and neck thru the handle. One of the main reasons why I didn't get any Peterson's pick when I started locking (other than the cost) was that he used such a little tang. While partial tangs still distribute stress throughout the handle, it's not as consistent or even as a full tang. With experience that isn't much of a concern, but as a newbie picker that was definitely a factor in the decision on the sets that I got!
ABRA KADABRA!!! Like you, I've started to encounter issues with my nerves. Hands have a slight shake to em. I actually haven't been in that long. Approaching my 4 year mark. Was gonna get out but extended like a dummy. Gonna keep on keeping on for a bit more before I finally throw in the towel and promote to "Mr." I hope you get better man. I'll have to look into that meditation stuff myself and see if that helps me any. I'll also be checking out that Jimylongs restock. Take it easy.
@@KablamX find a Chinese acupuncturist. An actual Chinese Dr. tell him your symptoms. Mine discovered my parasympathetic nervous system is out of whack. Look into that. I go to acupuncture now every week and it is life changing. I come home and take a 3 hour nap after each time. I can now drive if my wife is with me and I’m walking again in public. The meditation helps for a couple hours but the acupuncture helps for several days. If you can do both you’ll feel a lot better

Abracadabra Appreciate the info. Not gonna lie I did listen to this video in 2x speed since it was so long. Also I think it’s funny that the day after you released this video sparrows announced a kickstarter set at $20 saying that you won’t find a better starter set for the money
@ I have a lot of the sparrows sets and I agree with this after getting my law lock tools and multiple CI sets. Also just purchased the news set of Jimy Longs.
Awesome video! I will definitely be picking some up today. There was a movie back in the 80’s that got me interested In lockpicking called The Double McGuffin I believe. Some kid with a modified Swiss Army knife that was all lock picks. Got my first pick set in the early 90’s when I was doing a security class for Law Enforcement. HPC junk. No clue where I ordered from. Southord Max set when I started school for Locksmithing and full Peterson set when I graduated in 2012. Honestly, my fave set is still my Swick with upgraded profiles and brass rotary tensioner. The CI Reaper set is also reached for a lot.
@ it gives me the most room and if it’s cold out my fingers go bone white due to trauma and I can’t feel anything. So at least I have visual markers how much tension is being applied.
Hey sandman! This video came out just in time, im starting up my own lock pick business and everything you said is so important for any manufacturer, i totally agree with your statements about quality and hearing out the community, id like to talk with you about the picks im about to manufacture, i want to ask you for feedback and overall opinions, if you see this, how could i reach out to you?
Abra kadabra Here are a few questions I have for you related to how you’d rank the brands as you were earlier So you said that moki multipick and jimmy longs would all be in the same subjective tier but the way that you regard jimmy longs makes me question if you’d put them a tier higher from the top 4 base line you set? Also what reasons do you have for ranking law lock slightly below the top 4 base line? Sorry for my bad syntax Have a good night.
I got my first lock picks from the magic shop with a "book" titled 'Lock Picking for Magicians' when I was about 12 years old in 1990. The picks were stamped out of spring steel and came with a short hook, a rake, and a bottom of key way single end tension wrench. Used those for years and had a lot of fun. Picked up a four pick set stamped out of spring steel from SouthOrd years later online. The site claimed you had to be a locksmith but required no verification for the order to process, even shipping to California. I'm glad to say that I no longer have to use those sub-par tools and have been eagerly awaiting Jimmy Long's and Covert Instruments. The video that LockpickingLawyer put out recently where he was using the Apex tools was awesome and I thought they would have released them before the Grav Pick. th-cam.com/video/52MZ8O_5r3E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nioBlYHxMB36e1Xt

I promised myself that I wasn't going to buy anything else until the Apex came out. Tomorrow will likely make me a liar. That "Jim Hook" set is calling my name, and I can actually justify buying it because I don't already own anything like that profile.
Some sets already sold out…in just a few hours. Glad I saw this video and jumped on the intermediate set when it became available.

Sold out very quickly. If he keeps changing the version numbers he will always sell inventory very fast.
Listened to this while I was working on picks. No plans to buy new Jimy Longs. I have a few of one of the earlier versions.
Everything sold out already! I grabbed 2 sets, but that’s nuts. Awesome there’s that much interest in lock sport though and for Jimy
