22:04 oh that's Klonoa, he's got a few video games, somewhat famous mascot character for a while from Namco, he's got a lil pacman on his hat too
Thanks for the info, I learned something new today.
@@loganfromearth they did put out a collection of his first two games earlier this year, the Phantasy Reverie collection, they're really solid platformers, and the whole idea behind Klonoa as a character is that he's a Dream Warrior, travelling through people's dreams to help them work through their issues.
Klonoa was my childhood bro
5:06 - standard modern aircraft carriers have over 3000 crew, including everything from your bridge crew all the way down to the janitor who deals with the fact Jerry's stomach didn't sit well with the meal the culinary crew made last night. All things considered, I'd put this at around 2000, more akin to a WW2-era carrier.
The USS Gerald R. Ford has over 4,539 crewmates which is pretty crazy
i was gonna say "a small village" is an understatement if anything. its beyond village and into town territory
I love that in a situation where logan gets vored, he wouldn’t panic or anything, he’d just immediately judge your diet.
what an absolutely abhorrent train of thought.
cant say i disagree though
@@drunkchey9739 my train of thought is most equivalent to the polar express: it occasionally derails and starts doing sick drifts
@@ramblingturian Does it have tank steering and a human air horn tho?
This is the only comment mentioning vore that i could find, which is surprising because he out right says it in the video
@@DigitalFleshStudio dude heard “vore” and went frantically searching through the comments
27:40 - That whole area is taken one-for-one from Yume Nikki, a game about wandering through surreal dreamscapes. I'm surprised you're not familiar with it!
Only tangentially through my community. They seem to adore that game.
@@loganfromearth Well, given the sorts of things you've been interested in throughout this series, I'd strongly suggest checking it out. It can definitely be very obtuse and occasionally off-putting, but there's lots of little moments of beauty and serenity sprinkled throughout, too. It's sort of an originator for this 'genre' of games/maps/etc.
@@loganfromearth I really want to see some commentary and insight into what you think about Yume Nikki worlds , although it would be quite a big divergence from the games you normally play.
@@loganfromearth I think you would enjoy it. The game is an absolute masterpiece and is to me at least the game that has influenced me creatively the most in my life. It has no real concrete story or goal, just wander around and discover things. There is actually a decent bit of Yume Nikki stuff in this map besides the Docks level. Most notably that girl in the skirt and pink sweater with the checkerboard pattern on the chest that keeps appearing. That's the main character Madotsuki.
Tldr I geeked hard seeing that and was sad you didn't know the reference lol.
@@loganfromearth Definitely recommend you looking into it Logan, the series is niche but has a huge cult following with a ton of fan games that all pretty much encapsulate the idea of getting lost and exploring surreal landscapes. Considern' some of your other videos it might be somethin' you'd enjoy on your own time or even makin' a video about.
I respect the decision to not do a christmas themed episode, but we definitely need a generally winter themed one at some point, especially with how good snowy rock was (And sventove in this episode).
This video feels so personal, it’s like im on a vc with the TH-camr and he’s just showing some random maps he found on the workshop and shit
This is amazing
These maps and showcases are really fascinating. In my view this is one of the purest forms of artistic expression in the 21st century.
It's definitely an overlooked creative field, many people don't take it seriously as art but I think it is.
17:23 This is a reference to Arthur Schopenhauer, the World as Will and Representation. The actual meaning of it is sophisticated and cannot be fairly summarized, but is a reorientation of the metaphysics of how we interact with the world. That is, the world that we see is not a cluster of "billiard balls randomly arranged" like we are taught but rather a perception shaped by one's own Will.
That's freaky to think about. Thank you for sharing, I didn't know there was a connection.
Yo that's my oc Amelia at 22:04 the little "Amelia was here" I know the creator of the map, shrimp, absolutely amazing guy who I met through his other friend and they both help me with mapping so much
@@Mistpirit Hell yeah. That's so cool, I'm glad to hear they're a chill guy.
Well I wasn't expecting this comment at all. Still that's extra cool to know you're aware of the game, let alone had an oc of it.
Keep it up!
damn what i thought that was Klonoa
On the reverse aircraft carrier: it's likely that at least the lower beds actually have 2-3 people per bed, in space limited environments like ships hotbunking is relatively common, as it majorly reduces the sleeping space required for your crew.
We are so back
we never left
we are so black
@@loganfromearthnever leave
24:28 In tf2 at least, surf servers use altered physics settings to make surfing easier, as without it it's basically impossible to surf if your not an expert at non altered physics surfing. The only console command I can remember that servers use is sv_airaccelerate, I know there's a few others that are sometimes used but I can't remember what they are. And surfing is possible on any class not just scout, as the source engine bug that allows surfing to be possible isn't affected by player movement settings.
Good to know! Maybe I'll do that next time I find a surf track on a map.
Using half-life textures in mapping is like having brick & mortar with wooden beams...
sturdy, familiar, timeless.
Airplane hotel seems like a neat idea, but there's one thing that makes it less than ideal - food tastes worse when you're in the air. For some reason. Now I'm not saying nothing, but I'm sure some inventive person might make a fancy train hotel. All the swank, none of the blandness of food. :D
And the Reverse Aircraft Carrier was fantastic - maybe because I love me some surrealism, but this whole map had a bit of a Magritte vibe to it, which I appreciated for sure. :D
Thank you, Logan - this was an excellent gift! Have a great X-Mas and/or a happy New Year! :D
Always good to see you, Yornick. Yeah, I didn't know that about food tasting worse. That definitely hurts my chances of buying a ticket. Thanks for watching, happy holidays.
@@loganfromearthI think it’s because the drier air impacts your sense of smell, which affects how things taste.
It's also something to do with atmospheric pressure and local strength of gravity; up in the air it's not just drier, but also less weighty and, by extension, less pressurized, which affects the sense of taste directly in minute ways.
15:01 It kind of looks like the one spongebob episode where Sponge's body got shaved off so he's just the brain eyes and nose
You're totally right, it does!
i started watching your channel in 2020 i think when i was homeless and i just got kicked oiut again after experiecing it for the last ten years n today on christmas your channel is giving me that same familiar comfort expolring unknown n unlivable places. thankyou
I am.. Naturally preoccupied over seeing this comment. I wish I could do more beyond comfort and wishful support. Do please take care of yourself if possible
I don't comment often but I decided I might say something considering it's the last video of yours for 2024. I'm so glad I've discovered your channel and I hope it will grow a lot in the coming year, your videos are so relaxing and scratches an itch I've had for who knows how long. Your videos have a neat nostalgic feeling to it that I can't explain as of why it's there, it just is.
Love you, Logan many smooches and happy holidays and new year.
These gmod vids always gives me the serotonin boost I desperately need. Makes me want to download and mess around in some maps myself. Already cant wait for the next one
dude i need to say thank you! your videos made me buy Gmod a week ago and I’m having an absolute BLAST exploring all the amazing maps people have made so far! i love them so much that i even started working on my own map! which is heavily inspired by your "how deep does it go?" vidoes. right now i have a structure in the middle of a desert where there's going to be a hatch that leads somewhere *mysterious* (or just interesting lol) and it will only go deeper from there!!
Glad to hear it!
I'm so addicted to these videos! I really love the way you're narrating them. The mood is so good and I genuinely really appreciate the writing in them. I'm so glad to get into a new one! Thanks so much for the work you're putting in to these! Keep up the good work man.
Dude, the video was amazing, your commentary are great, your voice is soft and calming, almost felt asleep listening to you. Going to watch the whole playlist! Keep on the amazing work!
15:52
This map looks like a Rimworld Ice Sheets playthrough. It even has random stone chunks scattered about.
hey, yeah!
2:20 this map is actually based on a work of art by the incredible artist Stan Mott, I highly recommend looking at his work since you are into giant vehicles, he did quite a few that would make amazing maps, my favorite being the "Super Tanker Chopper," literally a massive super tanker retrofitted into the worlds biggest motorcycle.
the lore for this one, if you are wondering, is that its owned by an eccentric Oil Sheik, who wanted a personal aircraft carrier (made out of cars) but gets seasick so he put the water ("how could it be a real aircraft carrier with no water?") on the deck, so it lands seaplanes. Also, it contains sharks as a security measure to protect from Russian Scuba diver sabotage.
edit: oh never mind guess I should have waited to the end of this section
Lmao, your explanation is appreciated regardless!
Merry Crimblo, Logan From Earth. I loved the quickfire map segment, great way to showcase some smaller maps between the really big ones. Here's to many more weird maps!
Hempy chrysler to you, too!
The "void boardwalk" beneath Sky Archive is a zone from Yume Nikki, a genre-defining exploration/"horror" game. The sprite characters are present in the original game, and I think the isolated/unreachable section of terrain might be as well.
This is my first video ive seen from your channel but i ALREADY LOVE this style of content. I love detailed and cool gmod maps, theres just something about them that are just so cool to explore (i love map design) i watched dialkos “cool and creepy gmod maps” video and ive been WANTING more content like it.
4:07 You're in luck. I have a "huge thing" that "moves" when I see you.
Your narration over these is so charming :D
Thank you :)
Hot damn, thinking of old TF2 community maps has got me reminiscing about the old days, where I used to frequent a couple |CY4G| servers and such. One of them ran Clocktown (from majora's mask) 24/7, while the other had a more custom made carnival themed map, with sections to basically idle in.
Man, I really do miss those times, as it was back when everything felt vaguely magical in source games (and other retro games), as it felt like they could stretch on for miles beyond the corners that our normal player visions were limited to.
TF2 was truly a gift to internet culture, so many people have been affected by it positively. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime game.
my genuine reaction to the gift of not having a christmas episode was "OMG DEAD SANTA IN THE POOLROOMS MY FAVORITE!!! HOW DID YOU KNOW???"
also btw does logan from earth say trans rights?
"i like _______ as much as the next guy but not if THIS is the next guy" is now immediately and irreversably entering my vocabulary.
Trans rights!
@@loganfromearth YAY! Sucks that we live in a world where i have to confirm that one of my favorite creators doesnt want me dead :::P
I found your channel yesterday and binged your videos. Really bummed that I'm all caught up and dont have any more to watch, but I can't wait for your next upload. Your videos have brought me a lot of peace. Love the calm, relaxed vibe you create and the little asides/observations you add. The maps you showcase are super interesting. It's all very engaging and takes my mind off of things. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how wonderful your videos are and show you some love since you're a smaller creator. Thank you for doing what you do. :)
@@kaylabivins Thank you. That means a lot. More on the way!
Hey, just wanted to say I’ve been really enjoying your videos! Genuinely some of the best relaxing stuff I’ve watched on platform, def one of my fav series. Keep up the great work! :D
Thank you for watching :)
Hey thank you so much for your vids. It's rare I feel this way about someone's content, but yours is just really genuinely cosy.
@@wooliamsheeper3839 thank you for watching! I'm glad my stuff can bring you comfort
I got to tell you Logan. This new video of yours is a real hoot. Merry Christmas you amazing man.
Merry Christmas!
I nearly choked on my food with that dead Santa reveal in the intro, that was hilarious
i've come to enjoy your videos so much that i now keep them in my Watch Later for a special moment where i really really need it. consider that my highest compliment
9:50 machine, turn back now, the layers of this palace are not for your kind
Turn back or you will be crossing the *will of God.*
thank you for existing, genuinly just knowing you exist makes me happy
i really enjoyed the “mixed bag” selection of maps in this one!
Stellar episode as always, thank you so much for introducing me to Sky Archive especially. I absolutely adore that sort of vibe in maps, seeing all these random references and inside jokes coupled with the genuinely impressive design and surreal atmosphere of it all... there's just something about the way it captures the vastness of the internet and perfectly distills it into a source map just to hang out and trade virtual hats that makes me so weirdly happy lol.
Actually reminds me a bit of another map I happened across recently, Restless Plaza by Ethosaur. Strongly recommend checking out it and some of his other maps at some point (not necessarily for a video or anything, I'd love to see you explore them but I'm sure you already have more than enough content to pick from and don't wanna come across like I'm trying to pile even more on lol), they have such a cool and strange and unique vibe to them that's hard to put into words.
No joke I think I did take a took at that map and filed it away for later ;)
I have spent so much time on Ethosaur’s maps, they’re really cool
Turning off my comment blocker to say this is genuinely one of my new favourite videos on youtube. Love the stuff showcased and the really interesting (and funny!) way you speculate about it all. Really awesome stuff.
New favorite channel honestly
With the reverse aircraft carrier, I can’t help but be reminded of the carrier from Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak lol. Though I’m pretty sure that properly scaled and put side by side, the reverse aircraft carrier would still be bigger haha
i adored this vid start to finish and now wanna check these maps out; enjoyed the artistic analysis of the maps too regardless of intent of the mapmaker cus there's value in what we take from something too
@@miraclewillow1 you should. They're awesome
17:22 I LOVE DREAM GAME!!!
Keep making these fire videos bro, your content is awesome.
this guy is so good at reviewing maps
You know its a good map when the creator has an un-healthy obsession of eevees as much as I do
I just discovered you, and god as someone with ADHD, I love how your commentary feels exactly like my thoughts while I play games
logan from earth..... my christmas hero......
Room at 22:34 really reminds me of the second level of Kirby 64: the Crystal Shards. The level where you’re in an autumn forest, the platforms especially look like something from that game
I think the reverse aircraft carrier is for transporting boats from one ocean across a desert to another ocean. The water is to let the boats sit in while they are moved.
great and simple maps. thanks for the video! 17:45 reminds me of 90s cgi aesthetic really cool
Ah new video, just when i needed it.
Man i love those videos.
hey, this probably wont be seen but ive played quite a bit of sky archive, its very frequently played on Samwiz's stupid server. theres a LOT of hidden rooms and easter eggs sprinkled around the map, including a huge array of docks below the elevator shaft, alongside a dev room even further below that.
@@frostburn2982 I found a lot of nifty stuff that I didn't show, including the dev room! Very cool place.
24:34 iirc in gmod you need to do some shenanigans with the sv_airaccelerate console command to make surfing work. The default value is like 10 and you have to set it to 100 or 1000 or something for proper surfing :D
happy new year and great video, you give these maps the perfect amount of coverage to get me to download them myself :)
@@locke_d thanks for watching and letting me know. Maybe next time I find a track, I'll have to fool around with these settings and get a proper surf on!
Sky Archive was so neat, I'm surprised trading is still a thing in TF2. Speaking of which, I think trade maps would make for a good theme in a future video!
I liked it, too. Yeah, hat trading. Amazingly, still around.
decarabria
Pretty sure the maps are still popular because I used to play that engineer focused one a lot, I stopped around a year ago because the server had too many players and I stopped playing TF2 much. Also, the reason you couldn't get up the ramp is because of something in TF2 called trimping.
A 30 minute video about gmod at 3 AM? Why yes TH-cam, with pleasure
Thanks for making this videos. You're one of the few channels that i have all notifications turned on, and when the new video is posted, I already know it's gonna be good
you're criminally underrated man, love all your vids!
Thanks Ross- I mean Logan, for an interesting showcase of these Garry's Mod maps.
@@kiler1411 You're welcome
Two of the details I personally experienced on sky archive were a chamber that turned every playermodel that entered it into Niko from oneshot, and a rat poster that gave you a "plague" that constantly played flesh squelching noises
Also, lots of music played over an in-map jukebox
Thank you so much for continuing uploading these videos, they are really special for me❤❤❤
how have i dreamed about being on that exact “airplane hotel” before. it struck me almost immediately. the working corridors, the view of the wings from the cockpit… how did i dream of it
You're the chosen, obviously.
I'm afraid you may have a case of the Main character premonition. Expect someone important to you to die soon and kick off your adventure
I don't know when it happened but with stuff like Sky Archive, I cannot remember a time before where Yume Nikki fans we're ever eating this good.
So simple yet so well made. Charming too. Great Videos.
Thank you 😊
Please upload more where are we now!
This is the greatest gmod series to ever exist!
Big Deserts of Kharak energy off the Reverse Aircraft Carrier. My assumption from that map name, sight unseen, would have been a gigantic airplane that picks up boats.
This might be one of the most wholesome and funny videos I've seen in a while. Bravo sir!
@@standardparty9971 aw thank you 😊
viewer from jupiter here, thanks for introducing with a notice for folks like me who have no idea what a "christopher J mass" is. Twas rather helpful.
No problem.
The only thing I like about Christmas is getting drunk enough to forget that it's Christmas. Same thing with my birthday.
you can't just taunt me like that by casually mentioning the textures from the voidplace maps. I absultely love every map P'nkblack has mad and I desperately need to see you do a 3+ hour video on the entire series. Voidmall deserves an entire video in it's own right, Inno is best girl and her hit single is one of my all time favorite songs.
Heh, sorry about that!
3 new videos from You is the sign I gladly came across returning home from the military 😌
Awesome! What branch?
@loganfromearth Air force. But I aint a pilot. Just an engineer
wow this content is amazing; i was shocked when i discovered that this video had less viewers than the quality brings you to believe, if you want more suggestions to make another video like this i would reccomend the map Gm_jakku_wreck by Lord Trilobite, it gave me the same surreal feeling that this video brings.
our gift this christmas is the wonders of the human mind
The void boardwalk is from Yume Nikki, it’s a 2d dream exploration game, I think you’d like it.
Good old tf2 trade servers, its been years since I last visited those.. There's a lot of secrets in those maps for people to find by just messing around for a few hours, it was always a treat. There's also achievement servers-
The first character on the last map you pointed out is Klonoa, from a Namco series sharing the name! While a few of the anime characters actually originate from a Japanese shoot em up series called Touhou Project, which youve almost certainly seen characters from before, as they have almost as much of an impact on memes as tf2!
That is one of the most unique intros I’ve ever seen. Bravo!
Thank you!
21:32 That's a still from the anime "Squid Girl". It's great, dumb fun. Highly recommend
man i've only been recently introduced to your content but this series is just a jewel in the source youtube community. i like how your narration relates to how we're probably thinking when we explore these maps with you.
it's also surreal seeing that tf2 map on the list because i used to play a lot on lazypurple' silly servers and there was such a large menagerie of strange ass maps we got to explore. one of my favorites was a map consisting of multiple planets you could travel to, and i fondly remember letting everyone grapple on to me and just soaring to different planets like a goddamn space shuttle.
i usually just used gmod to fuck around with nextbots but now i've been trying to find maps to explore on my own (which isn't easy now because you've already highlighted a lot of the extraordinary ones, though the way you do it is just so damn entertaining)
i do have some highlights though:
gm_fever_dreams - like your average gmod liminal space map but a little smaller, though i wouldn't underestimate what it has to offer.
High Tech City - a cool city that's fun to drive in, i wish you could enter more buildings though
tldr another goated video by alan smiling friends
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with the wacky end of the TF2 map spectrum. I'm glad I could inspire you to explore. There are far more interesting maps on the workshop alone than I could ever cover, so don't worry about that, it just takes some digging.
@@loganfromearth thanks alan from smiling friends
That character in the big painting you saw looks like Klonoa. I never played the game he's from, but there's a community of fans for his games of course.
I think he was supposed to be basically some other company's response to mario and sonic.
There were a lot of Mario and Sonic attempts, weren't there? One could argue that even Sonic was just Sega's answer to the wild popularity of Mario.
great gift indeed! always a great time watching, the brain worms just chill when i watch.
Thank you for watching :)
I AWAIT THE NEXT WAWN WITH GIDDINESS AND EMOTIONAL SINCERITY!
I'd love love LOVE if you were to explore more TF2 maps in the future. The TF2 community has a whole plethora of plain weird maps like achievement_turbo and trade_abstract (just to name a few) that are not too dissimilar to what you explored here and it'd be interesting to get your perspective from the outside looking in, as there's bound to be a ton of ancient tf2 culture that'll probably leave you scratching your head but at the same time It'd be awesome to hear what you'd parse from it. Your commentary and speculation as you explore these maps have always been a highlight for me I love hearing the creative ways you justify a map's oddities. Keep up the good work!!!!
9:30 "Have you seen the Magic School Bus before?"
Oh god! *SEAT BELTS EVERYONE!!!*
Also did the Sky Hotel map make anyone else thing about Studio Ghibli's movie Castle in the Sky?
i love the vibe of your videos.
merry christmas and happy new uears!
glad to know you not only are aware you probbaly have viewers into vore but welcome them in, you dobt see that kind of friendliness often, im sure they appreciate it
27:30 Gotta love those two specifically placed impact marks on the arcade guy lol
You know it's a good day when Logan uploads a new video. ^^
Also not super into anime but id recommend checking out DanDaDan that show is absolutely crazy in a good way
i forgot about this man long ago,i switched browsers but i should have probably not,i love these gmod exploration videos seeing the little dark corners of the gmod workshop to try and seek for some cool maps and tell it to the audience if they wanna explore it themselves
the boardwalk is a reference to an area from a game called yume nikki
yume nikki is an rpg maker game thats actually free on steam
its actually quite heavily linked to liminal spaces and a genre called "weirdcore", infact it arguably created the concept of a liminal space. and served as a big inspiration for the topic/genre
its also a huge inspiration for a much much bigger game... UNDERTALE
id heavily recommend you have a look at it, again it IS free and very small. you could maybe even get a video out of it if you wanted to.
the main character (madotsuki) is also featured on one of the screens in that map, its the line of anime girls scrolling, with some having cat ears.
another character, niko from oneshot (the purple and brown catboy with a hat and scarf) is also in one of the paintings, hes also from the same scene of games made in rpgmaker.
edit: I see this has already been mentioned now but i think its still good to have more extended information on it here incase people dont know
This is one of the most entertaining videos ive ever watched
Ah, I'm one of the early birds, huh?
Time to produce a rushed comment of no substance that will fade into obscurity.
;)
A surprise video to be sure but a welcome one:)
great video!! so glad yt showed me your content
Thanks for watching :)
i think, canonically, the person Ms. Frizzle's class goes inside of is Ralphie Tennelli on a day he was home sick from school. hes the stereotypical "fat kid" of the class
If I’m not mistaken the boardwalk below the last map is a big reference to an old really mysterious game called Yumi Nikki, it’s a real old rpg maker game with no real concrete themes or story with a super mysterious developer, the entire thing has a dream like vibe to it. Honestly think you would enjoy it a lot
Yeah, I can see that. I should have expected a Yume Nikki reference, to be honest.
6:28 That looks to be some kind of massive piston engine. Those run on regular ol' diesel. Usually the pistons are contained and are pushed by the diesel exploding. That turns a shaft that turns the wheels. 6:28 Typically, aircraft carriers that size are nuclear powered. Spicy metals boil water, and the steam spins a turbine to generate electricity to power massive electric motors, that turn a propeller. (Or in this case, tracks.)
Good ol' diesel
