I've read this somewhere on the internet once: "People don't want a re-imagining of things, they want to re-visit what they had back in all those years", which is the part PixelTail isn't getting to and why their new thing isn't as popular as GMod Tower

    • @klaykid117

The other issue is it was community made, they just used the same maps everyone else did. Now they are forced to create their own due to there stance on stealing content.
The maps are omega small and just aren't as good if you can even grab a lobby of uch it just isn't the same and the fact only 8 players can play it's strange that the people who made it just can't understand it wasn't about the community only

the argument he made about "imagine someone stealing most of a book you worked on and republishing it" seems like a false equivalency. it's more like imagine i wrote a book that everyone loved and i gave it away for free, and then i took everyone's copy away and burned them and burn any new copies because i wanted to write a new book and charge for it.

Yeah, I really love that. I can see Tower (hopefully) slowly growing bigger and bigger, heck, bigger maybe than Gmod Tower itself even. It will eventually offer VR support, things that were simply not in GMT, such as Horror Hill mode in years to come and a whole lot more. I really wish for Tower's success but I am kind of worried about it's future. I really do not want it to drop dead like GMT eventually did, even if GMT's death wasn't a slow, natural one.

The reason GMod Tower worked so well was because of all the flaws you could make out in it.
Source was by no means something that could uphold it, but that gave the work all the more charm and amazement. You could see the seams breaking in the code and it was a love to behold how well they were stitched up.
A lot of the content you also saw used in the Tower was content from other Source games. You had that nostalgic feeling seeing CSS Office walls in the lobby, TF2 maps in Chimera, or feeling like every weapon in Virus was just taken as a reskin from GameBanana.
GMod Tower had a "Community" feeling where as Tower Unite has a "Product" Feeling.
GMod was broken, and nostalgic. Each bit of the gamemode had to be written by exploiting every drop of the engine, and pouring love into every asset that would cost even one more entity in the BSP limits.
That feeling is ultimately lost in Tower Unite because it is too clean, too perfect, sterile, flawless. It lost the charm of a community sweat-and-tears project and instead it just got "produced".
I wouldn't say the port has lost any soul, but I'd say it lost a charm only the outdated 2012 Source engine could provide...

    • @ChocoRainbowCorn
      @ChocoRainbowCorn ปีที่แล้ว +9

I think this is pretty well said. It doesn't feel the same, far from it and it definitely has just it's own feel. But I disagree that a sense of community has had been lost. I can easily recall some more or less vague, but still memories of people coming in to my condos and rating them in Tower Unite and such and there's still many people creating content from scratch for Tower Unite such as unique player models as commissions.

    • @thatparkerkid368
      @thatparkerkid368 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

It's funny you say this because Tower Unite easily has 10x as much love and work put into it. They don't have to simply "make do" with source assets anymore they can actually create the game they wanted to make in the first place.

    • @ChocoRainbowCorn
      @ChocoRainbowCorn 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

.. Okay, you know what. Now that I think about it, I retract part of my previous statement from 2 months back. At first, I forgot what you meant but going back to old maps and stuff from Gmod Tower that some people still have and replaying those old maps and all that in regular Gmod sandbox mode, I can get what you feel now. To be completely honest, I have no idea why I lost the sense of that in the first place. I certainly, very much do miss Gmod Tower being broken af and limited with Source. Yes, Tower Unite is the peak dream of Pixeltail team developers, but at the same time, there's no denying that Gmod Tower had and still has that something that Tower Unite misses. I think back then, in that original comment of yours, you pointed it out very well. Even playing those days and having had played all the time even before for all those years, Tower Unite that is, it just feels.. Bad. It feels kind of empty, as much as I enjoy it and it's community. It's not even the lack of Source atmosphere, though that's ABSOLUTELY a huge part of it as well, it's primarily that, exactly as you have stated, that game, Tower Unite like.. I don't really understand WHY they can't or don't want to make it just a bit more silly. Less empty, give it more emotion. THAT'S the thing that drove me back to Gmod Tower all those years back. I so, so wish they would bring this back. I rarely play Tower Unite anymore because of the atmosphere but also the general repetitiveness of all the content, but yeah, the atmosphere is solidly missing, clean and just.. Wrong. I certainly wish Tower Unite continued success and I will keep playing it for long years to come for as long as it's alive with developers and community, but at the same time, I can not wait for the day when Gmod Tower is released into public after Tower Unite's final release. The moment people start hosting OFFICIAL and LEGAL rehosts with content now officially approved to be reused by developers, that's the day I'm so going back to the old days, even if only for a short while. While there is currently Gmod Tower Reunion, it's just not the same, the Lobby 1/original Lobby holds no nostalgic value for me nor do I share any memories with it, it's just also genuinely quite bad AND there is Tower Unite's absolutely abusively aggressive ads everywhere - It's not like they don't have the right to promote their game, they absolutely do but they definitely went too far on that one. Gmod Tower Reunion, simply doesn't feel like Gmod Tower to me - At all. Having said all that, there's also the issue of being unable to just have fun in Tower Unite's lobbies with stuff like fireworks which would have had been amazing - It was a thing you could do at one point but ultimately removed as not worth the time or something like that as far as I recall. Regardless, I just want them to give Tower Unite at least a bit more feeling and life - That's all I really wish for for this game and that alone will help bring me back into it at least a little bit more.

Honestly, I think they're missing a great opportunity to advertise their game to the Gmod community, but instead of an inviting preview of a game that would directly support the devs, they threw the desecrated husk of a once beloved game on a stage with a sign that says 'If you don't like the performance, go buy tickets to his son's show in the next theater.'

Gmod Tower was a fantastic gamemode, and was the main reason I got Gmod in the first place. I remember logging in and just being amazed by all the minor things, like the over 100 people in the same map, the decorative and cozy suites, and being able to play TH-cam videos on the screen. Lobby 1 was one of my favorites, it perfectly encompassed the feeling of Half Life 2/Gmod, which was a bit droll and dreary, but despite that, it felt like it had life with how sunny it felt at the same time. I spent most of the time playing Ball race and source karts. Lobby 2 had it's own charm to it, but it wasn't nearly as good or had as much personality as lobby 1, mostly due to how it felt like "everything was in one place, and not neatly sectioned off." I made some great friends on the server, and would play it nearly every day whenever I could.
When Tower Unite came out, I remember immediately buying it as soon as it came out, to some optimism and disappointment. A lot of the gamemodes that were in Gmod Tower were missing (the only available gamemodes were Virus, Ball race, Minigolf, and a new "Planet Panic", which has been completely unlisted). There was a pretty weak variety of items in comparison, the only major upgrade to the decoration was Canvases, allowing you to put whatever picture on the internet into the game, which was fun. While I had high hopes for the future, the beginning was bland. the Casino wasn't even there from the beginning. They have a Trello that promised things that were in Gmod Tower, like maps, gamemodes, and arcades, but had a lot of really big promises, like fishing, cooking, and even island exploration, but even today in 2024, a lot of their promised additions are in the backlog, or were released to not much hype.
Tower Unite today is still very much a fun game, with a bunch of workshop additions to recreate the infinite possibility, maps that very much encourages people to build literally whatever they want, and a dedicated fanbase that's still keeping the game fairly active even after almost a decade since it's release, but it simply can't hit it's old audience or any proper audience for that matter. The only time it really jumps up is when a new major update is added, creating a new gamemode or feature to the game, but it's around 80-100 people in the game as a whole most of the time. I really wish that one day it'd jump up the popularity it had when it first released, where plaza maps would be almost full constantly and you'd meet new faces almost every time, but you'll come across a couple familiar faces almost everytime you get to the most populated lobby.
Thanks for bringing back the memory that was Gmod Tower, it was a game I loved when I was 10 or so, and now that I'm 22, I still would love for a comeback to either Gmod Tower in an actual form, or Tower Unite to be much more active.

As someone who has played the hell out of both the original GMTower (you can even see me waving in the screenshot at 3:18) and Tower Unite (according to steam I have just under 2k hours) I feel like I have a pretty good perspective of things from both sides of the table and I'd just like to throw my two cents out there for anyone who would like to listen.
Nearly 8 years ago, going directly from GMT to TU was rough, simply put I just wasn't on board. All the things you mention in your Tower Unite section, the movement, disconnected condos, TU just didn't have the same warm feeling as GMT. But, obviously, I stuck with it. Tower Unite has existed for nearly a decade and in that amount of time I've grown just as attached to TU as I did with GMT way back when. I've kept up with several people from the GMT days who still actively play TU and seeing both them and me in those old screenshots and clips is really heartwarming, so to say that there is a complete split between the GMT community and the TU community isn't entirely true. Yeah there’s some divide, but it isn't ALL us vs them.
My biggest gripe with TU at the beginning was the lack of interconnectivity, two servers vs an entire video game and people are obviously going to be spread out more on the latter. Take condos for example, I 100% agreed with you originally. Being able to just stroll into someone's apartment was a lot of the charm and it was a hard sell seeing that gone in TU.
BUT the difference is important, because TU's condo editor is far far more advanced than GMT's. Seriously go to the TU steam workshop page and search for top rated condos the stuff people make is mind blowing, like a fully functioning 3D all night recreation of the first FNAF game. Condos in TU are practically your own worlds with its own quasi coding language, being able to pull from any texture or model you want, and just have so much depth. The most fun I've had in TU have been just hanging out in people's condos, talking for hours and hours as they walk me through there personally crafted homes, which is something I never did in GMT. There wasn't a suite I can remember that was worth spending hours in exploring, they were far more temporary. Which again isn't a bad thing at all, but the merits of one system over the other is less conclusive for me.
Seeing you play TU for the first time reminds me of the hurdles I had just about 8 years ago with the game, but I had 8 years to get over them, and slowly come to cherish them in that same feeling any comforting familiar game has. I can speak from experience, the game has soul, depth, and I've most certainly enjoyed my time with it.
There are things you can do in TU that you just can't do in GMT, and vise versa, and more than anything else I don't want this to be comment to be condemnation of either of them or me just telling people off who disagree with me. But I can't help but feel like TU doesn't get a fair shake when compared to it's older brother and that's something that I wish wasn't the case. Going directly from GMT to TU is a shock, but I think those willing to stick with it can find a whole lot of fun to be had and I don't see the point in silently wishing for the failure of one or the other. I only really focused on one specific example here but both of these games have been a consistent part of my life for over a decade, which is not only wild just to think about but has gotten me reflecting on my time with the games with the recent increase in conversation surrounding the both of them. I want nothing more than to have these games breathing with life as they do mean a lot to me.
I hope you've enjoyed this admittedly long winded anecdote, I'd have more to say but I think I've just about taken up all the space I can get just about now. In conclusion I think TU is pretty is fun, and a pretty damn good game in its own right.

Gmod tower was a fine proof of concept, it sucks folks need to harass the devs because they can't let go.

lets be real. Tower Unite would be way more successful if they didn't take down fan servers. Community Goodwill is hard to earn, easy to lose. If they kept gmod tower up and running in a supported state, I think it'd frankly increase the traffic to tower unite from genuinely enthusiastic players who would wanna pay them back for their effort. Now that audience will forever be vehemently against them.

6:34 Sounds to me like their new product simply doesn't deliver for the original fan base. Doesn't matter how much work was put into the project. There's a reason Halo MCC has more players than Infinite. There's no way I would fork over money for a mediocre spiritual successor before I replay the original, no matter how it's available. As an old GMTower head I will say a few things because I also do really enjoy Tower Unite. You're right it is a beast of it's own and more catered to playing it with a friend group than random players who will become your friends over time, but also I feel like that's the reality of things nowadays. Also the player counts can hit high numbers post updates and especially on weekends. I spent admittedly too much time on GMTower and I think Tower Unite scratches a different new itch that I was still lacking from no game like Tower. MacDGuy is a genuinely nice person and I have gotten the chance to just randomly meet him in TU plazas, he and other devs would just pop in time to time to play, and hell Caboose even jumps in sometimes nowadays. Which I feel like is something that you don't really see devs do all that often with their own games, even in the indie scene. He is also a CEO of a company and is usually incredibly busy as a result, sadly. Their dev team is 7 people big, it's less than the estimated "11-50" shown haha, they also have a public Trello where you can see them actively develop and work on things. Also the gamemode thing is not common, I have 400 hours god knows how many are spent in condos watching shit on the media player with friends and how much is spent in the casino but a great deal was spent playing the mingames, and it's just a weird networking issue when joining via the plaza, it's better to just use the gameworlds option anyway, easier to find games that way or even start your own!
I also feel like, and I am not saying this as a fact, but knowing how Mac was treated by the GMT and FacePunch community, ESPECIALLY on the FP Forums, might sorta have a bitter resentment towards it and the idea of reviving this gamemode that he spent years working on and creating which got him a metric ton of backlash anytime there was an update that broke something or just GMT wasn't going how the community wanted. As much as there are fond memories there was also, in old internet fashion, a lot of just being a dick to people who really didn't deserve it. I am glad to see a video on this topic that doesn't turn around and just immediately dislike TU for "killing GMT" whether it's your speed or not is your decision and shit. I just remember liking TU and people just being vitriolic online about it. Hopefully someday we can see an open and supported GMT revival so I can drag a couple of my non-GMod friends on to force them to play and be like "this is how I wasted a weekend as a kid" I've already done it to them with Elevator: Source, Survival and DarkRP. As thanks for listening to me rambling like crazy about this junk lmao. I was gonna leave a dumb joke about old FP JailBreak servers but I feel like "Just don't join the lego maps" wouldn't make sense to alot of people who were even around at the time.

However they are very much morally in the wrong because instead of just letting people have the old memories and fun they’d much rather kill it completely because (imo) they’re intimidated and pissed that the gmod version is more loved then their new version.

Back in 2013, I was playing a bit of Gmod, didn't really understand why the game was so popular, as I loaded up a sandbox singleplayer game in order to check it out. I had a friend at school, who got me into TTT and DarkRP, and one day mentioned the Gmod tower. He retold stories about his condos and the random players that would enter them, which was enough to get me onto the server. I do miss the old Gmod tower and was looking forward to the Source Kart game mode, but I entirely understand why they decided to go into a standalone game. I spent quite some time hosting my own servers and making code for said servers, so I know how limited the Source engine can be. They hit a snag with the engine, and could no longer push it further.
However, I do not like people trying to shutdown fan projects, especially since the majority of fan projects are trying to just have fun and not profit off the projects they make. Plus I doubt they could win a court case, as I'm pretty sure as soon as Nintendo sees their assets being claimed by another company, they would immediately go and sue that company.
I like Tower Unite, but it doesn't have that Source engine appeal to it, which makes it feel like a different entity entirely.

Gmod tower is a representation of what Gmod once was: a game.
The servers that currently represent gmod are gross and predatory, and only serve to damage the game's reputation and community every passing year. Very little of the game's current player base know the game was like back then, having a giant multitude of game modes to choose from. What makes role play servers so alluring is beyond me, consdiering how mind numbingly boring they are.

hey, just so yall know a new gmod tower server came up a few months back and its getting active updates. right now the player count is low, but its steadily growing, and the actual devs hop on a lot to answer questions and socialize with the community a lot... or fuck with you by telling you where the wondering merchant is than instantly tping him somewhere else lol. its a real fun time and right now you can actually get a suite since its not constantly crowded like it used to be.
and ima just come out and say it, but if pixeltail doesnt want people rehosting their game, then they need a proper replacement. tower unite is a game you go to play with the friends you already have, gmod tower is something you play to meet new people. they do not serve the same purpose, and the Gmod tower server they host is poorly maintained and half the time you cant even get in cuz they just dont have the right map in the content pack. they could get a huge PR win and possibly even more players by just endorsing the people who loved their game so much rather than shooting it down.
most people who play these servers also arent "potential customers", THEY ARE CUSTOMERS. ive yet to meet a single person on a rehost that didnt already own tower unite and was just disappointed. its not like people are playing this because they want to play free tower unite. most are playing cuz they already paid for tower unite and just want to play the game they thought they paid for.

I was a very active member of gmod tower circa 2013-2016. I spoke to MacDGuy and his wife along with prominent members of the community regularly. I don't regret backing Tower Unite, but the vibes will never ever match GMT.
That said, I have 2 big opinions:
    1. Tower Unite and GMT can absolutely co-exist, and I think it's not cool how GMT rehosts were treated after Tower Unite became the priority. Pixeltail has the legal right to do as they please, but they need to accept that some people just perfer GMT over Tower Unite. I understand thier strong feelings as creatives and as a business, but they gotta just let it be.
    2. In a way, Gmod Tower had to die. I perfer GMT over Tower Unite (even though I find Tower Unite just as fun in some respects), but if the devs just didnt want to develop GMT anymore, you can't be mad at them. I support the dev's decision to move on if GMT wasn't enjoyable to them. We can't force them to like working in the old Source Code
Anyway I have positive memories for both games, and would like for both Tower Unite and and Fan Rehosts to Flourish.

GMod Tower always looked so cool in the day. I always wanted to try it when I was younger but most of my prime GMod years happened when my dad had a pretty strict monthly data usage limit on his broadband, so I couldn't ever download all the stuff they had on there to actually try it myself outside of standalone Cinema, Elevator and a pressumably unlicensed standalone UCH server.
Shame Pixeltail seem like cockends. Elevator and Cinema are iconic, they've made some incredible stuff, but while it's one thing to try and make some money from your success spiting on or even outright going to war with your long time fans to do it is just a plain shitty thing to do.

Great recap! I only played on gmod tower servers every now and again just since they got laggy on my old pc, but I really enjoyed that sense of community and sleek designs. I played a ton of UCH even outside of gmod tower so it was cool to see that still working. The ability to just walk into a room with other players by exploring the same server, whether that be their suite, a cinema, a minigame or even just the hub was really special.

As someone who didn't grow up with a PC or having any ability to actually play stuff like GMod Tower, the early days of Team Fortress 2, or even the REALLY early days of the original Destiny, I get sad because I never got to have the amazing experiences that so many other people had and I'll never be able to have those feelings even if nowadays I do have TF2 and the original Destiny, it's not a time machine. I don't just get to have those experiences, because they're gone now. But as someone looking in, I feel for people who want them back, even if I never had those experiences myself. It's crazy how you can miss something you never had the opportunity to be able to miss it.

The GMT Reunion server was originally going to only be up for a month or so, but it appears they have kept it up since then, but the main problem with it is its being run on really bad hardware, so the servers are quite laggy even if you're the only player on. (Atleast when I last tried it, it may be different now since you didn't mention it)
I've personally also had the problem where I wasn't allowed to transfer my GMT stuff (money, items, etc) from my old steam account to my new steam account so I could get that stuff in Tower Unite
Basically the Official GMT server was a massive disappointment, the most concurrent players i've seen was 8, and it always felt like they only put the server up because people kept asking for it back aswell as all the rehosts so they could dmca and go "just play on the official server"

Honestly, I refuse to ever support people who corpo wash something that was once unbound and heartfelt.
If they wanted more prople to get unite, they should have allowed player created content like Gmod or VRchat allow, and even better they could have built it in source or source 2 so it could have felt like an evolution of GMtower, as opposed to a different game wearing its skin.
Edit: didn't know about the workshop update, its a bare minimum threshold I suppose.

In my humble opinion, I find it childish that a company that made a game mode for garry's mod that violated copyright laws basically all the time, is now hiding behind that same system actively stopping people from enjoying their old content.
I think if you don't actively plan to support a old piece of software, it should become public domain. If people would rather play a outdated, buggy version of your game, maybe you should look at your game and find out why.

I really like Tower Unite and I'm one of the few Tower Unite players that started off with GMod Tower. I backed the game on Kickstarter back when the big day came. I bought a $200 backer reward where they'd make a cosmetic or decorative item of the backer's request. My item was the mannequin bust wearing a tiger pelt jacket and the tiger tail cosmetic item. They split it into two items because of the switch from customizable playermodels to letting players use workshop playermodels.
I remember the first days of Tower Unite with its alpha rendition of Ball Race. It was a really rough launch and I applaud the Devs for sticking it out to this day. But, yeah, the switch from Gmod Tower to Tower Unite was palpable. Just the way you walked around in the world felt different from the original game, and during the launch the only customization options were the default playermodels with some clothing. Workshop playermodels wouldn't come for a long, long time. And that was one of the things I loved about GMod Tower, it was a big crossover with dozens of beloved characters all in Source. You could be walking around in Fallout 3 Tesla Armor hanging out with Niko Bellic and Yoshi, and we had to wait a long time to get that back.
I hope that fans of GMod Tower come around and at least give Tower Unite a fair try, It's a really good game that carries the original game's legacy forward. It's like GMod Tower 2, a sequel instead of a remake.
I do agree wholeheartedly that the people behind it have a really shitty attitude about their old project and their old fans. They could easily just set up some proper support for GMod Tower or even collaborate with the fan projects to make them as good as the original. Or at least give those guys the OK and let them sort things out on their own. It would cost them, what? Nothing? Do they honestly think that someone regularly playing GMod Tower is a lost sale for Tower Unite? If anything, people playing the old Source engine version of their game would increase their sales from the publicity. And the people who played GMod Tower and want to play it again would be more than happy to pay the server upkeep costs if that's what it takes.

Can't forget about how an old friend of mine and I worked on a Monkey Ball remake and he banned me from his forums, ended up going into a now defunct project where we set out to make our own unique experience that's inspired by Garry's Mod Tower and any talk about it was strictly forbidden in their Discord and on their forums despite not using any code or models from their experience.
Mac's own hubris will be his downfall, nothing like paying your devs garbage while you and your wife buy a new house, go on vacations and spend thousands of dollars on dolls and other expensive things!

  • @sill
    @sill ปีที่แล้ว +6

7:05 okay but the point is that the old version was **better.** Users don't care how much work you put into the newer version. They care about what they get out of it, be it nostalgia or just a better experience. Creating a relaunch of gmod tower and putting ads all over it ruins that. PixelTail has a lot to learn from what they did better in GMT and worse in TU.

Wow, this was a real trip down memory lane.
Gmod Tower was actually my first online multiplayer experience (back in 2011), and man what an introduction that was haha. I remember playing on those servers like it was yesterday! I was bummed when I first heard that Gmod Tower was getting shut down and despised Tower Unite because of it. Finally, I bought my copy of Tower Unite around late 2019 and while it isn't the Gmod Tower we all grew up with, I was very surprised with how good it was. I personally consider it to be a worthy successor. With all the new updates they've made, I've had just as much fun with friends. 😄
Still with that being said, I'll forever remember the memories and good times I had in Gmod Tower. 🙏
    RIP 2009-2016

Me and my brother always loved GMOD Tower. One of my favorite memories was placing all the furniture for my condo on the ceiling, including the TV and chairs. If you sit in the upside-down chair you could watch the TVs normally. We would leave the door open and die of laughter when someone entered and you could see their utter confusion!
We got into tower unite a few years ago, and a few times a year we play it for a bit. I was overjoyed in the beginning when we found out that you could still place the furniture upside-down on the ceiling, and that sitting on the upside down chairs would still rotate the camera as well! Sadly though its very rare for someone to stumble upon our shenanigans.

imo pixeltail should just open-source their old gmod tower code since they haven't touched it in forever OR people that host these revivals should start writing their own twist on it from scratch while keeping the core idea the same, that way pixeltail won't get angry about people stealing their 14 year old abandoned code that probably doesn't work very well with modern builds of gmod 13, plus it would look really bad for them if they decided to threaten a group of randoms with lawsuits because their gmod tower inspired clone that's written from scratch has few similar things that tower unite has.

im so quietly devastated to realize that gmod tower shut down around the time that i started playing gmod, if not genuinely really soon after i started, and i just never knew about it till now somehow?? it sounds like it was amazing.
i feel like, as someone who never played this gamemode but gmod in general, that an appeal of something like this is an appeal of gmod in general, that its all these different games wrapped up in one. while a game like this can work on its own, at its core its still a hangout game, and those... tend to be less than ideal imo. its a reason why vrchat gets so boring if you cant find any of the non-hangout games, idk. at least this has minigames and and the extra stuff like the suites/condos, which is a really cool idea for this type of game.
also gmod has so much odd charm to it that, at least from a glance, the remake didnt quite have.
i do wish the devs well, but it is pretty crappy for them to not let people have both versions of the game, to go out of their way to copyright strike people just feels gross to me. i get where theyre coming from as someone who likes to create things myself, but im also just as much of someone who enjoys nostalgia like any other person, and also online history like games and game servers like that. it seems a shame for it to be shoved into a garbage can just because they want to move on. also it literally sounds sooo fun and i wish i could play it, and i dont have the money to buy video games very often to buy tower unite.
